Moreover, sliding doors either divide or unite the suites, making the spaces ideal for families chartering with children in adjacent staterooms.&nbsp;Outside, the vessel’s multi-level aft terraces allow guests to take in the scenery, while a swimming pool, sun loungers, and alfresco dining area allow for outdoor activities. Furthermore, the e-FIN simplifies maintenance, reducing the complexities typically associated with hydraulic stabilisers and offering a user-friendly experience.First fully-electric stabilisation systemDesigned to enhance both operational efficiency and environmental impact, the e-FIN features a compact, robust gearbox and electrolytic capacitors that facilitate seamless power recovery and storage. This innovation reduces energy consumption and lowers emissions, while providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional hydraulic systems.A significant advantage of the e-FIN is its ability to recover and store energy through proprietary technologies, ensuring that excess energy generated during fin movement can be reused. “Depending on sea conditions, we can recover nearly 80 percent of the energy used to move the fin,” highlights John Allen. This not only boosts overall efficiency but also decreases the yacht’s power consumption, resulting in reduced operational costs and a smaller carbon footprint.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/330702/image/large-d3b307e8cbdb7e9b09e8bc5e97a8c893.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/330702">Developing the E-FinThe E-FIN is the product of a multidisciplinary collaboration among <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Quantum Marine Stabilizers (Company)">Quantum</a>’s team of 15 engineers from the United States and the Netherlands, spanning fields such as hydrodynamics, naval architecture, and electrical and mechanical engineering. Katie Ross, Business Development Manager, notes, “When I asked our Engineer Manager how our electric system differs from the competition, he responded, ‘We don’t know. We just decided to design the best electric stabiliser possible. That removed any boundaries for us.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Quantum Marine Stabilizers (Company)">Quantum</a> initially explored electric stabilisation a decade ago, but the available technology fell short of the company’s standards. “The components weren’t there. They needed to be lighter, smaller, cheaper, easier to install, and less likely to overheat. Energy storage and recovery were also not as advanced,” explains Andrew Corbin, Technical Sales Manager. At that time, the concept of an electric stabiliser seemed impractical due to these technological limitations.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/330701/image/large-1c1b9c467fdedf9dcbd7d29e1d684e02.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/330701">After pausing research into the e-FIN in 2014, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Quantum Marine Stabilizers (Company)">Quantum</a> shifted its focus to improving existing systems and developing new innovations, such as the F45, as shared by John Allen during the unveiling event. “In 2022, we revisited the electric stabiliser, and by then, the technology had advanced considerably. What wasn’t available to us in 2012 was now readily accessible,” Allen continued.“For us, the key to the e-FIN was the technology developed for the F45, our hybrid power unit used in larger stabilisers. Essential to this is energy storage and recovery. We realised that with an efficient design, we could recover energy from the stabiliser while it’s in motion, which is substantial,” elaborates Allen. “We used the F45 energy storage and recovery theory for the e-FIN, allowing us to smooth the power output, reduce overall energy consumption, and recover energy during operation for future use,” he adds.A unique gearboxA standout feature of the e-FIN is its proprietary gearbox, engineered to endure up to, at least 10 million cycles, ensuring durability in demanding marine environments. In addition, this robust system employs electrolytic capacitors for power storage, chosen for their capacity to withstand high temperatures and effectively manage power fluctuations.John Allen explains, “We approached the design of the e-FIN with an in-house designed gearbox. We didn’t outsource a drive or gearbox from a supplier; instead, we designed our own, that could accommodate unique movements, while meeting the structural noise requirements and longevity that were important to our requirements.&nbsp;To address the challenges of cyclical loading, Allen continues, “Cyclical loading, such as a jump from zero to 25 kilowatts every four seconds, can compromise the ship’s electrical grid, causing a major strain and potential failure. &nbsp;With the electric stabiliser, the unit becomes so efficient that we had to find a solution to smooth the power. So we did.”&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/330705/image/large-1dffb2853fc68f62b37802c96ff1d3e4.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/330705">Andrew Corbin, Technical Sales Manager, adds, “Every yard will tell you that stabilisers can be an issue for onboard power systems. Fluctuations are detrimental to the power grid, and power is more easily drained at anchor. Energy storage for power smoothing is inherently important for the operation of the system, and until now, no one could recapture the power.”&nbsp;Complementing the gearbox is the E6 controller, which enhances the system’s functionality by monitoring the motor’s torque. This allows for real-time adjustments, reducing maintenance needs. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> is making strides with its research and innovation in sustainability with not one but two major announcements made last week during <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2022">2022 Monaco Yacht Show</a>.&nbsp;The German shipbuilder announced that the team at its new Innovation Laboratory in Bremen has successfully simulated and tested the integration and operation of a Marine Hybrid Fuel Cell System on board a yacht powered by methanol. “Under real-life ambient conditions and with all required auxiliary systems this demonstration plant can be considered to be the final preparations to bring fuel cells on board a yacht successfully,” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> stated.&nbsp;The work has been completed thanks to a strategic partnership with Freudenberg, one of the leading experts for maritime fuel cells which employs around 50,000 people in 60 countries. Notably, Freudenberg recently received type approval from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1457" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RINA (Company)">RINA</a>, and the safety concept conforms to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4531" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="International Maritime Organization (Company)">IMO</a> Interim Guideline and is approved for use on all types of ships. But the fuel is liquid at normal ambient temperatures, so these challenges can be managed safely, as with other fuels.”Peter Lürssen added, “Our customers want to dedicate as little hull-space as possible to propulsion and fuel storage. Methanol has disadvantages here compared to diesel, but clear advantages over other alternatives to fossil fuels. We're now seeing that today's prospective buyers of tomorrow's yachts are increasingly thinking about how they can make running their vessels as environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly as possible. As the company explained, “Unlike the diesel engine, whose fuel self-ignites under high pressure, methanol – with its lower flash point – is ignited using a spark plug, in much the same way as a gasoline engine.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/76577/image/large-0b0ee5b20857068b69776b4a13536dc2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/76577">“Despite increasing climate awareness, we have to convince our customers of the benefits of methanol as a fuel, as engine power output will be lower than that of a diesel engine of the same weight and size,” Dr. Justus Reinke, Managing Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, added. “Because building large yachts – such as those produced by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> – involves a comparatively long lead-time, he wants to convince customers on land, so to speak, even before the first methanol yacht is launched.
