In their latest financial disclosure, the Board of Directors of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, presided over by Chairman Massimo Perotti, convened to evaluate and endorse the financial results for the period ending on 30 September 2024.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320979/image/large-649a94dae16898ab9df849136057ab5a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320979">Consolidated net revenues new yachts&nbsp;Net Revenues from new-build yachts (Net Revenue New Yachts) for the first nine months of 2024 reached €669 million, with €253.9 million generated in the third quarter alone. This marks a 6.9% increase from €626 million in the corresponding period of the previous year.&nbsp;For the first nine months of 2024, the Yacht Division reported Net Revenues New Yachts of €384.4 million. This figure is attributed to contributions from the initial sales of the SP92 and SL86-Asymmetric models, unveiled at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/210" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2024">2024 Cannes Yachting Festival,</a> as well as the pre-launch sales of the SD132 model.The Superyacht Division reported robust performance, recording Net Revenues New Yachts of €198 million for the first nine months of 2024. This marks a 15.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023, primarily driven by the continued success of the Steel line.The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluegame (Company)">Bluegame</a> Division reported Net Revenues New Yachts of €69 million for the first nine months of 2024, representing a 3.1% increase from the same period in 2023.An additional contribution of €17.6 million was recorded by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan Division</a>, which was consolidated starting from 1 August 2024. This figure represents revenues generated in just two months, August and September, of the nine-month reporting period.Furthermore, a geographical breakdown of net revenues shows a return to historical trends, with a more diversified mix than in 2023. The Americas experienced significant growth of 38.8%, while the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region saw robust development at 80%, and the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region had solid performance, increasing by 16.6%, though Mainland China was an exception. However, Europe experienced a 9%.&nbsp;Consolidated operating and net resultsEarnings before interest depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) reached €123.6 million, an increase of 8.6% compared to €113.8 million in the first nine months of 2023. The margin on Net Revenues New Yachts stood at 18.5%, rising by 30 basis points from the previous year and by 50 basis points when excluding the impact of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan</a>'s consolidation.EBIT reached €97.5 million, marking a 6.8% increase from €91.3 million in the first nine months of 2023. The margin on Net Revenues New Yachts stood at 14.6%, reflecting the dilutive effect of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan</a>'s consolidation. Excluding this impact, the margin would be 14.9%, a rise of 30 basis points from the previous year. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan</a>'s comparatively smaller scale contributes to a higher incidence of depreciation and amortisation on revenues than the group average.Pre-tax profit reached €101 million, marking a 7.3% increase from the €94.1 million recorded in the first nine months of 2023. Similarly, the group net profit rose to €72.9 million, up by 9% from €66.9 million during the same period last year. The margin on Net Revenues New Yachts was 10.9%, an improvement of 20 basis points over the previous year, enhanced by net financial income of €3.4 million.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/298552/image/large-7852cafec36587fb5fa33772c6d2e93d.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/298552">Consolidated balance sheet and financial resultsAs of 30 September 2024, net working capital stood at negative €4.2 million, marking a substantial improvement from negative €34.9 million as of 31 December 2023 and negative €59.5 million as of 30 September 2023. This shift indicates a normalisation of seasonality trends and order intakes in the post-COVID period, essentially neutralising the impact of net working capital on Net Revenues New Yachts .Inventories reached €153.6 million, reflecting increases of €68.2 million since 31 December 2023, and €79.5 million since 30 September 2023. These rises are primarily due to higher levels of raw materials and work-in-progress products, aimed at accelerating production to meet demand for the most sought-after models. Additionally, finished product inventories stood at €43.8 million, an increase of €21.8 million from the end of 2023.Organic net investments during 2024 amounted to €27.8 million, with 88% directed towards expanding industrial capacity and developing new models and product ranges. These investments represented 4.1% of Net Revenues New Yachts, reflecting a reduction driven by a growing revenue base, despite consistent investment levels required for new model development. Including the consolidation of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1011" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simpson Marine (Company)">Simpson Marine Group</a> and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan Group</a>, total investments rose to €162.1 million.The net cash position stood at €27.2 million, down from €140.5 million on 31 December 2023. This change reflects temporary cash absorption driven by key factors, including dividend payments of €34.6 million, organic net investments of €27.8 million, and extraordinary disbursements totalling €82.9 million. These disbursements included €5.4 million for treasury share purchases in Q3 and investments in M&amp;A. Specifically, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan Group</a> acquisition impacted the net financial position by €53.6 million, comprising €32.4 million for a 60% stake purchase and €21.2 million for consolidating its financial position. The acquisition of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1011" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simpson Marine (Company)">Simpson Marine Group</a> added €23.9 million to the total. This increase of €45.8 million reflects the contribution of the acquisition during the reporting period.Net backlog reached €1,050.9 million, compared to €950 million as of 30 June 2024, representing a coverage level exceeding 1.1 times the annual revenues – a figure higher than pre-COVID levels. For fiscal year 2024, the backlog provides strong visibility on future revenues, with €875.9 million (94% of the mid-point of the 2024 Net Revenues New Yachts Guidance) allocated to the current year and €844 million for subsequent years.Order intake for the first nine months of 2024 totalled €582.7 million, reflecting a normalisation compared to €604.5 million in the same period of 2023. This adjustment is attributed to the return of typical seasonality following the extraordinary post-COVID demand and extended delivery times for superyachts due to a high volume of pre-existing orders.2024 Guidance<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> has reaffirmed its 2024 guidance for Net Revenues New Yachts, EBITDA, EBIT, Group Net Profit, and Investments. This outlook applies to both organic operations and a consolidated basis, incorporating the five-month contribution from the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan Group</a> between August and December.In addition, the reabsorption of net working capital, achieved faster than initially anticipated, has led to a revision of the Organic Guidance for the Net Financial Position as of 31 December 2024. The new range is set at €110 to 120 million, down from the previously projected €160 to 170 million. A new study commissioned by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2589" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) (Company)">Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss)</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6042" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Superyacht Life Foundation (Company)">The Superyacht Life Foundation (SYL)</a> has revealed that the global superyacht industry generated approximately €54 billion in total economic output in 2022.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394792/image/large-c868cea6a77bcff39975852d62a13272.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394792">Conducted by Deloitte and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Global Economic Impact of the Superyacht Industry study supports <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2589" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) (Company)">SYBAss</a>’s new Superyacht Builders Advocacy Campaign. The initiative is designed to increase awareness of the role yacht builders play through employment, industrial innovation and long-term economic activity across coastal regions.According to the study, the industry generated €22 billion in direct expenditure, which in turn created a further €32 billion in indirect economic activity through global supply chains and tourism, operations, hospitality and maritime services.The study identified the new-build segment as the most economically catalytic segment of the industry, generating a multiplier effect of 2.8. This means that every €1 invested in building a yacht creates an additional €1.8 in economic value across the wider economy through suppliers, subcontractors, logistics, engineering, services and long-term operational activities.While downstream sectors such as charter, brokerage, marinas, tourism and hospitality generate significant recurring annual revenue, the study demonstrated that these activities fundamentally depend on the continued construction and renewal of the global fleet by builders and yacht owners.According to the study, new vessel construction alone accounts for 37 percent of the industry’s total economic impact, which equates to approximately €20 billion globally. It also found that new-build activity equates to long-term growth, as every newly delivered yacht expands the downstream operational economy for decades to come.The report also highlighted the growing importance of the refit and maintenance sector, which contributes an estimated €5.6 billion to the global economy, representing around 11 percent of the industry’s total impact. As the worldwide fleet continues to age and modernise, the study identifies refit activity as one of the sector’s strongest long-term growth opportunities.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394795/image/large-e32a4e678897430977b68dfc646294fe.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394795">Builders remain at the core of the industryThe study also identified the industrial significance of the upstream sector, which comprises both new-build and refit activity. This serves as the industry’s industrial core with a total direct economic impact of approximately €9.5 billion. Within this figure, new-build operations account for 76 percent of total shipyard turnover, equivalent to €7.2 billion, while refit activities contribute the remaining €2.3 billion.Despite the luxury image often associated with the finished product, the study describes yacht construction as fundamentally a blue-collar manufacturing industry. Each vessel requires years of coordinated work involving welders, engineers, electricians, naval architects, carpenters, painters, metal workers and project managers, alongside extensive supplier networks.Much of the workforce is trained through apprenticeships and specialist vocational programmes to meet the technical demands of modern superyacht construction.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394794/image/large-56e78c18a3842227faecfb8072284cf3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394794">Long-term economic contribution of the global fleetAccording to the report, the global superyacht fleet now approaches 5,600 vessels, with each yacht contributing an average of €9 million annually to the economy. This figure is calculated through its operational lifetime with maintenance, crew employment, marina services, fuel supply, tourism expenditure and refit cycles all contributing towards the total.The study also noted that while numerous suppliers and contractors contribute to each project, long-term responsibility for the yacht ultimately remains with the shipyard whose name appears on the vessel throughout its lifespan. Therefore, builders carry disproportionate industrial, financial, operational and reputational responsibility relative to the broader ecosystem.“The global superyacht industry is not merely sustained by tourism, operations, and luxury services,” explained the study. “It is fundamentally made possible by the industrial capabilities, craftsmanship, investment and long-term commitment of yacht builders.”Over the next few months, the Superyacht Builders Advocacy Campaign will continue to share new insights, industry perspectives, and data-driven analysis. Their findings will be presented in the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Report 2026, which is set to launch during the summit. Between January and December 2025, a total of 586 superyachts over 30-metres were active in the region, up from 530 in 2024 and 445 in 2023. The report also notes that these figures reflect yacht presence across a 12-month period, including vessels based in, visiting or transiting through the region.The regional fleet also remains slightly larger than the global average. David Westwood, Managing Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TWW Yachts (Company)">TWW Yachts</a>, shares an insight into the realities behind the superyacht market’s much-discussed slowdown, how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TWW Yachts (Company)">TWW</a> is bucking the trend with a strategic digital focus and what to expect in the coming charter and show seasons.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/264905/image/large-ba114c596bb9a8f15ca87f6095e4c8f2.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/264905">There's been plenty of talk about a slowdown in the superyacht sector. How does that compare with what you're seeing on the ground?I had real concerns at the end of 2024 that the momentum post-pandemic couldn’t possibly continue. The industry was running hot; sales in brokerage and new build were high, shipyards were under immense pressure due to full order books and delivery slots and we faced shortages across the board for good product, along with operational constraints, especially in the crewing sector, especially in crewing. A slowdown wasn’t just inevitable, in some ways it was needed.There was global uncertainty too: the US election, the Ukraine war and, more recently, instability in the Middle East. Typically, in an American election year, clients pause on speculation and sit tight. But interestingly, after the election result, we saw a steep uptake from December through February in both brokerage and charter. The US, which historically makes up over half of most firms’ sales, came back strongly.And has that recovery held into 2025? Not entirely. From March onwards, instability globally – tariffs, wars, shifting policies in Asia and the Far East has caused the momentum to dip again. The Middle East, which is a key charter market for us, softened slightly, and Asia was hesitant too, particularly in areas like Hong Kong and Singapore.What’s been fascinating for us at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TWW Yachts (Company)">TWW</a> is that, while others are still talking about a slowdown, our figures are encouraging and have generally risen. We've seen a distinct rise in lead generation and, more importantly, a marked increase in conversions – particularly from our historical client database. Clients who’d previously stayed on the fence for two or three years are now engaging with intent. There’s also been real momentum in newer regions, with active conversations and transactions in markets such as Turkey, Uzbekistan, Mexico and Australia. We’ve seen a notable uplift in activity from those emerging territories, and a broader appetite for charter and brokerage alike.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/369119/image/large-bd5cdcfcfb6f166dbe4bcdfb56f35058.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/369119">Why do you think that is?&nbsp;I put it down to our digital-first approach. We made a conscious decision in the early 2020s to break from traditional formats and go all in on digital. We invested heavily in SEO &nbsp;and a large in-house marketing department, which has created a dynamic content strategy, delivered quickly. While others competed in the same space in the same way, we aimed to stand apart.Ultimately, while the market might be flattening in some segments, the demand is still there, it’s just a case of reaching clients the right way, with the right product, at the right moment.Which segment of the market do you think has been hit hardest?Although this isn’t my main area of expertise, it appears that the production segment has been hit fairly hard. A lot of shipyards pushed ahead post-COVID, expecting the momentum to continue, but sales didn’t match that optimism. There’s been a build-up of stock, especially in the US and dealers have struggled to shift it. It’s a riskier environment. However, we’re now seeing those inventories softening and the stock beginning to move, particularly with the US market picking back up.There’s also been a slight ‘factory reset’ on pricing and discounting, which more realistically reflects the reality of the market. And while we still operate in the production market, we’ve tightened our criteria. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TWW Yachts (Company)">TWW’s</a> sweet spot is really the 35 to 75-metre segment, where we continue to thrive.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/369118/image/large-82ab91d0f9e1ad6ecbc9b591991c44af.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/369118" style="background-color: initial; font-size: 0.85rem;">You also mentioned the charter market – how is 2025 shaping up?Strong overall. We had a significant wave of bookings between December and February and then another surge from May onwards. That cycle is fairly typical with spring holidays diverting attention, but overall, we’ve written a lot of charters this year and are happy with the results to date.Interestingly, it’s the newer boats that are being booked early. Yachts over five to ten years old are proving more difficult to fill in our core range, while the larger yachts, 75 metres and up, are facing leaner calendars than usual. That market has been slower to recover.That said, crew is everything. We have older yachts in our fleet with over 11 weeks of charter booked because of phenomenal crews. Repeat business plays a huge role, and loyalty to captains and heads of departments outweigh age in some cases.As we look ahead to the autumn show season, how are things shaping up?The shows are full – both Cannes and Monaco. I love Cannes: it’s interactive, relaxed and productive - a great place to showcase product. We’re bringing three yachts this year: the 55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1549" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="After You55.0m (180'5&quot;)Heesen Yachts2011">After You</a>, the 37-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1756" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tansu Yachts (Company)">Tansu</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Preference 1936.4m (119'5&quot;)Tansu Yachts2011">Preference</a> 19 and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9334" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="M Forever33.0m (108'3&quot;)Custom Line2021">M Forever</a> the 33-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/112" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Custom Line (Company)">Custom Line</a>.Monaco is busier and more intense, but also hugely exciting. David Westwood on the shifting superyacht market, digital strategy and emerging charter trends

As the superyacht brokerage market moves through the third quarter of 2025, our Head of Intelligence, Ralph Dazert, takes a closer look at the much-talked-about downturn of the market, focusing on the new-build segment while also taking a quick snapshot of the used yacht market. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/205866/image/large-9e77ac14b51b37bd7308b59535ec24a2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/205866">New-build sales: still behind but catching up &nbsp;The new-build market started 2025 in a jittery mood, with uncertainty about the US market and the Trump Administration’s policy of import tariffs, coupled with a downward trend in the European market, worrying brokers and shipyards alike. &nbsp;The market for GRP yachts built to a model (dominant up to about 45-metres) has definitely taken some hits, with some well-known manufacturers like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess</a> in particular announcing staff reductions. Meanwhile, as of early August 2025, the share prices of the Italian builders <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">The Italian Sea Group</a> had also taken hits over the past twelve months (-15% and -35% respectively year-on-year since early August 2024), as did the shares of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4696" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexander Marine USA (Company)">Alexander Marine</a>, the mother company of the Taiwanese builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1394" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Alexander (Company)">Ocean Alexander</a> (-30% ), while the US yachting giant <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a> (a large player in the sales of GRP-hulled boats and yachts up to 40-metres, among other activities) saw its share price decline by -22% since early August 2024. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/233014/image/large-859455f9fc8cd7009c71f9afe386ee4c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/233014">We noticed that the major builders of GRP yachts generally have more new-builds and dealer stock boats available than they did a year ago, meaning they have capital tied up in those boats for more extended periods of time. &nbsp;All that makes for pretty grim reading, but what do the numbers look like? They are definitely behind on the same period in 2024, about 10% down, from 111 sales for the year up to 31 July 2024, to 100 for the year up to 31 July 2025. &nbsp;But, those are just high-level numbers, so let’s take a closer look: &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/369732/image/large-05acb7e14007169a5ee0284f3ba49a83.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/369732">New superyacht sales are following two divergent paths: sales of yachts up to 50-metres are down by 12% in numbers of yachts sold, while sales over 50-metres are stable. Interestingly, the decline between 30 and 40-metres can be attributed entirely to sailing yachts, which are down by six units year-on-year after experiencing something of a boom in 2024, as explained in our market column in SuperYacht Times issue 53. &nbsp;With attractive build slots for new sailing yachts currently in short supply, that segment has slowed down again. Even though sales numbers for motor yachts in the 30 to 40-metre segment appear to be stable, something has definitely changed in that market, as the share of stock sales (yachts completed on speculation and sold afterwards) has almost doubled compared to a year ago, from seven to 12 sales. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232981/image/large-38c7f2ac13511369dc2615663dbd18d4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232981">Clearly, new yachts in this segment are taking longer to sell than they did before. Additionally, sales of projects started for the client have decreased by almost half compared to 2024, from 32 to 18 sales. Meanwhile, sales of projects started on speculation have increased slightly, from 12 to 16.The decline between 40 and 50-metres is mainly caused by lower sales of yachts up to 45-metres, which dropped by five units, while the number of sales above 45-metres (which are mainly steel-hulled yachts) has dropped by just one unit compared to the same period of 2024. &nbsp;Sales between 50 and 60-metres have held steady, while sales between 60 and 80-metres were up by one unit, as market activity in the larger segments is buzzing and appears to be largely unaffected by global economic and political turmoil. &nbsp;However, there is an important side note to be made here: we are hearing from several shipyards all over Europe that clients are taking longer and longer to sign on the dotted line and are actively playing out shipyards against each other more than before. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/235065/image/large-f66538822a46ab8fbc088b0df32647fe.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/235065">Reportedly, clients at the top end of the market are baulking at Northern European price levels, as they perceive the new-build market as having weakened in their favour, so they are playing it hard. Meanwhile, yards in the top segment have little room to manoeuvre on the price. The order backlogs at the different players on the top end also vary, ranging from fully booked to yards that could use some extra capacity and are prepared to negotiate on price. &nbsp;At the moment, sales of newbuilds over 80-metres are still behind by one project. Still, the rather significant amount of large new-build projects under negotiation that we are tracking suggests that this new-build segment might notch up quite a few extra sales before the end of the year, making it a better year than 2024, which in itself was already a big improvement on 2023.&nbsp;So what about used yachts? &nbsp;The used yacht market warrants its own extensive study due to its sheer size and importance to the brokerage market overall. Still, for lack of space, we will leave you with a summary for the moment: the demand for used yachts over 30-metres appears to be stable compared to 2024 in terms of numbers of yachts sold, with 200 used yachts sold as of 31 July 2025, compared to 199 for the same period of the preceding year. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/233018/image/large-e530854b2f7981037879fc171adcbd1c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/233018">The total gross tonnage (GT) sold is actually up by 8% to 93,500 GT, indicating that the average used yacht sold so far in 2025 is larger than in 2024. The total value of yachts sold so far in 2025 is hard to estimate, as we have already counted no less than 17 off-market deals so far in 2025 (including some huge yachts). Still, it is well over 3 billion euros, which is not dissimilar to our estimate for the same period for 2024. &nbsp;On paper, that is not all bad, but we are only in early August at the time of writing. As a final note, sales of used yachts appear to be following a slightly different pattern compared to those of new yachts, with the number of yachts sold between 30 and 40-metres down compared to last year, while sales between 40 and 50-metres slid after two positive years in 2023 and 2024. Sales over 50-metres are up, entirely due to a strong increase between 50 and 60-metres. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/369733/image/large-87ed2000a90cf58ad228f52c52bb381d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/369733">ConclusionWhile the new-build market up to about 45-metres is very challenging at the moment, the larger segment is trending upward. In contrast, the used yacht market appears to be holding steady and exhibits similar divergent paths in sales numbers to the new yacht market, with total sales of yachts up to 50-metres down compared to last year, while sales of the larger superyachts over 50-metres are up. Having spent most of his life around the water, it seems only natural for Luke to have moved into the world of boating. Over time, Luke exchanged sailing for wakeboarding and eventually game-fishing, depending his passion for being out at sea. This passion has remained a constant factor in Luke’s life, deepening even further once he could share it with his own kids.A few years ago, Luke sold his business and decided to step into boating in a more deliberate way by acquiring the 35-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>, built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/554" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyds Ships (Company)">Lloyd Ships</a> in Australia in 1986. Purchasing her in 2024, the yacht allowed for Luke and his family to explore the Australian coast with more comfort, as well as for them to get to share their passion for the sea. “My two boys are especially big on game fishing, and my daughter is very passionate about snorkelling and marine life”, says Luke. The refit has been phased and purposeful, with 2024 seeing the first of the three phases. The yacht spent September to November at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3255" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (Company)">Gold Coast City Marina &amp; Shipyard</a> where the bridge was upgraded, soft furnishings replaced and extensive paintwork completed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388209/image/large-c74eb7958e3e321e611bea0e2d9fee9c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388209">The second phase was centred around remodelling the saloon, with new flooring, carpeting and ceilings, as well as mechanical enhancements. Other upgrades included a beach club installation, complete with an inflatable pool, protective netting and a shaded cabana, which has proved particularly popular with charter guests. Possibly the most meaningful addition during this refit have been the zero-speed stabilisers, “my wife suffers from really severe seasickness, the stabilisers are essential in making the yacht comfortable for my family,” Luke shares.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388210/image/large-06ec6524534531dc1f3ac942dd743803.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388210"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>’s third and final refit will take place in 2027 and will see an upgrade of the crew quarters. Originally, Luke had hoped to finalise the refit this year, but the yacht’s agenda, both in charter and personal use, is almost fully booked for the calendar year, and Luke wants to ensure there is enough time for the refit: “Our crew is so amazing, I'm super lucky to have what I believe is the best crew.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388187/image/large-fde4622fb25e3e416358ace496ed0104.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388187"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>&nbsp;juniorYet the 35-metre motor yacht is only half the story. Six months after acquiring the mothership, Luke secured what he describes as Australia’s leading game fishing platform: a custom-built 17.7-metre (58’0”) Assegai sportfisher. Designed specifically for marlin fishing along the country’s east coast, the yacht is equipped with a gyro stabiliser and, more recently, a Furuno Omni Sonar System capable of scanning 360 degrees around the vessel to significant depths, providing a technological edge in a pursuit that still relies on instinct and patience.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396954/image/large-96857bf8151cfcd655d86dc3d061d704.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396954">The reason for acquiring the fishing vessel to cruise alongside the mothership are his sons. Luke shares that “my sons and I have been game fishing together for the last five years or so,” and have even partaken in various competitions in- and around Sydney. “We’ve won a couple of state titles and other competitions,” a hint of pride sits in Luke’s voice. “My children in particular, have a passion for fishing, and I've just shared that passion, and supported it”, he adds.Lukes really enjoys fishing with his family and friends, on a recent trip to the Great Barrier Reef, the Shore Thing 58' landed a 1,223 pound Black Marlin. Yet Luke is quick to note that they’re conscious about the way they fish. “We only catch what we eat; everything else goes right back in the ocean. We’re not hunters, we just fish for the joy of it.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388186/image/large-a98a34adf0095495d9e5f32f36eb458e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388186">The joy of cruisingSome of Luke’s most cherished moments onboard are those with friends and family. “We hosted my 50th birthday onboard,” Luke shares, having chartered the yacht to Whitehaven Beach, located in the Whitsundays, “there were about 40 guests, all friends and family.”&nbsp;Possibly Luke’s favourite memory is the recent Christmas holiday onboard. “Spending time with our family and another family, sitting around and just having deep belly laughs over some beautifully cooked meals by our chef onboard.” Luke describes this as delightful and quite possibly one of the most memorable times onboard. “Your kids grow up so quick, getting to share such a beautiful time together and feeling like, as your kids become young adults, that you can really share laughs and stories. A look inside Luke Geelan's charter fleet: his 35m Shore Thing and the 58' sport fisher chartering around Sydney.

"The joy of owning Shore Thing is getting to share it with others"

<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom Yacht Equipment</a>&nbsp;has earned a prominent position in the superyacht supply chain for its bespoke boarding equipment, platforms, cranes, watertight doors and integrated control systems. Yet the engineering philosophy behind its custom-designed solutions is based on a resolutely modular approach.When Mervyn van der Ploeg was appointed managing director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom Yacht Equipment</a> in 2015, the company was going through a bad patch. It routinely redesigned everything from scratch for each new yacht project, leading to prototype-level inefficiencies and financial strain. A small but telling example is that it used to produce 32 different types of locking pins. Today, through a process of standardisation and modularisation, that number has been reduced to just two sizes.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396743/image/large-c20dda6c39f046eea94eaa71057b9e2c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396743">“Previously, when designing a platform for a yacht, four different locking pins might have been specified, requiring multiple suppliers,” explains van der Ploeg. “Now, we buy 200 locking pins per year in two sizes from a single supplier at half the cost.”The process began by redesigning a prototype passerelle from scratch using a fully modular approach, which then became a template for other equipment. While remaining a supplier of custom equipment, modular components are now reused across <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s product range, reducing design complexity and streamlining production.“A key technical insight came from looking outside the yachting industry,” continues van der Ploeg. “For example, swivel joints originally designed for excavators have been incorporated into our gangways. These components are proven, industrial-grade and standardised, which means we can build highly reliable systems without reinventing core mechanisms.”In the ten years since van der Ploeg joined the company, turnover has more than doubled from €12 million to €25 million, driven by increased efficiency along with larger yachts and a rising demand for integrated equipment.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396739/image/large-d48d0f06ceeb5a00cfda9bafe1c96878.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396739">Make it modularThe spin-off from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s modular way of thinking are innovations designed to maximise open space while eliminating visual clutter. Many of these solutions revolve around relocating drive systems into hinge lines and the platform structures themselves. In one recent project, a large side platform was initially conceived as two separate elements with a manually installed infill piece. While technically feasible, it was operationally awkward. Instead, by introducing an internal hinge drive already proven elsewhere, the entire system was re-engineered as a single monolithic platform. The infill was eliminated, deployment became faster, crew workload was reduced, and the geometry became cleaner.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396744/image/large-4feaec6057dc57f70fe27a2f2a88296b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396744">The Sliding Stairs Access Hatch is another example. Developed in response to a request to optimise the passage from the main deck to the beach platform on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship’s</a> 79.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11677" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valor79.5m (260'10&quot;)Feadship2025">Valor</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s engineers merged door, hatch and boarding equipment components to create a completely new solution. Essentially, the staircases on each side of the pool form the hatch itself, with half of each staircase retracting into the deckhead like a gangway to provide access to the beach club.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396742/image/large-bd76338bca2c0e5436acede35e416f93.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396742">“This marked a next step in modular engineering for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>,” says van der Ploeg. “Our approach not only accelerated the development process, but also showed how modularity enables flexible, cross-disciplinary solutions without compromising quality.”As both staircases form part of the watertight boundary of the vessel certified by Class, one of the main challenges was ensuring watertight integrity, given the angle at which the stair hatches are installed, as well as aligning the treads between the hatches and the fixed structures. In fact, sealing has become a central issue as stern structures grow more complex – folding, rotating and closing at compound angles. While inflatable seals are often the go-to solution and offer excellent theoretical performance, they also represent a single point of failure. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> typically prefers D-profile rubber seals, which wear gradually, remain locally manageable, and allow temporary mitigation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396741/image/large-cf52ffb86158af5f4ac7a5922058d9b5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396741">“This approach is especially critical for Lloyd’s-certified watertight items such as split transom doors closing at different angles, where corners and junctions between curved surfaces become critical failure points,” van der Ploeg points out.Such solutions highlight how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> has evolved beyond developing hardware to innovating the onboard experience, a strategy that has resulted in multiple patented solutions, from pop-up gangways embedded in the stern platform to protective cabrio covers engineered to fold, stack or nest completely out of sight when not in use. At the last edition of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Metstrade (Company)">Metstrade</a>, the company presented five interactive aft deck models through immersive 3D visualisations showcasing how engineering, design and user experience increasingly converge in the early phases of yacht development.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396745/image/large-b406b1bef2a73b0811b05344a273be7e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396745">Under controlAnother defining feature of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s approach is that its control systems and programming are all developed in-house. Precise timing between electronic commands, hydraulic oil flow and mechanical motion is critical, as are programmed delays that account for inertia and mass. Most systems employ frequency-driven power packs rather than simple on/off hydraulics, resulting in smoother movement, lower noise levels and the elimination of hydraulic ‘hammer’ effects. Automated operating cycles manage sequencing, speed and end-of-stroke deceleration automatically, reducing the risk of impact damage and operator error. Before delivery, full functional testing is carried out in-house, often with owner representatives present.Enclosed helicopter lifts represent some of the most complex control systems <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> has delivered. To address this, its latest systems incorporate data logging that records each operating cycle, sequence order, timing, load condition and fault event with precise timestamps.“When an issue arises, engineers can trace it back to the exact operating condition that caused it,” explains van der Ploeg. “While still being rolled out primarily on new-build projects, data logging represents a shift towards evidence-based rather than purely scheduled maintenance.”Across <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s predominantly hydraulic product range, failures rarely originate in the actuators themselves. Instead, the most vulnerable areas are where forces converge – locations where multiple loads are transferred into a single structural interface. Designing these interfaces requires careful attention to geometry, material thickness and fatigue behaviour.Marine-grade aluminium remains the primary structural material, selected for its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. Steel is used selectively in high-load interfaces where stiffness and wear resistance are critical. Carbon fibre has also been deployed strategically, particularly in the outermost sections of passerelles. Reducing mass at the extremity lowers bending moments throughout the structure, enabling greater reach without adding reinforcements.&nbsp;A more recent addition to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s fabrication methodology is the introduction of structural adhesive bonding. In lightweight aluminium constructions, particularly passerelles, welding thin sections sometimes caused unacceptable deformation due to heat input. In this configuration, the bolts act purely as locators and the adhesive carries the load.Another key evolution is the move towards bolt-in housings for boarding equipment such as passerelles and swim ladders. Historically, these housings were built directly into the hull, placing installation and testing squarely on the shipyard’s critical path.
