The countdown has begun for the second <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/193" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IMA Maxi European Championship - 2nd">IMA Maxi European Championship</a>. The six-day event is organised by the Naples-based Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia (CRVI) in conjunction with the IMA and is held in Naples' Castel dell’Ovo.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266955/image/large-d71be2638dba48e425e2fc6927468809.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266955">Taking place from 12 to 18 May, and supported by Rolex and Loro Piana, the event is open to maxi yachts and is raced under the IRC rating system with all entries required to have IRC Endorsed certificates.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266957/image/large-68e72c56014648160ef71b9675c0c934.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266957">The race comprises offshore and inshore components, with the offshore event starting near CRVI’s clubhouse within the Santa Lucia Marina. The 150 mile course heads past Procida, west-northwest to Ponza before competitors return to the southern side of the Sorrento peninsula. From here they wil round the Li Galli islands off the Amalfi coast, before returning to the Bay of Naples and the finishing off Sorrento.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266959/image/large-d0818a319d9ecefefe4a465a13a8837c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266959">This year’s event sees 28 maxi yachts from 18.29-metres to 30.5-metres, with the longest being Furio Benussi’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11572" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arca SGR 30.48m (100'0&quot;)The Yard Brisbane2003">Arca SGR</a>. The Trieste-based maxi yacht won last year’s Regata dei Tre Golfi in a time of 22 hours 25 minutes and 30 seconds, despite suffering hydraulic issues with her canting keel.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266958/image/large-17bf4cd2892b67c9fb116e1f14cfc8c6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266958">“Before we couldn’t use the winches and the canting keel at the same time,” admitted Furio Benussi. “When we tacked we had to wait for the keel and only then could we pull in the headsail. Now we can do both at the same time.”Last year’s event saw the first Maxi 72 arrive less than half an hour after Benussi’s crew, but this year promises some strong competition. “There are some really competitive boats like the ClubSwan 80 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10728" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Song24.7m (81'0&quot;)Nautor Swan2022">My Song</a> and Cannonball, which have done a lot of mods - now it is 75ft and they have changed the keel. She features a high volume normally found on larger yachts, with her interior design penned by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Overmarine Group SPA (Company)">Overmarine</a>'s technical department, alongside her owner.The first hull in the Mangusta Oceano 39 yacht series boasts floor-to-ceiling windows of her main and upper decks, which can be opened to seamlessly blend her interior and exterior spaces.&nbsp;Her aft area includes foldable terraces to provide direct access with the water, as well as providing guests with total relaxation in utmost privacy.
