Reports of a boom in the yacht market have been circulating for more than a year, and with sales up to almost record highs, a new set of reports have started to trend – that of a shortage of yachts for sale. While a lot of comments have been made about the benefits to shipyards and brokers, what does this really mean for yacht owners? Is this the best time to sell your superyacht and if so, who is the best company to turn to in this aggressive market? <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219951/image/large-0568415979a9a16e42cd84e17e8e1647.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219951">We spoke to serial yacht owner Jim Glidewell, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/54756" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts’ 58m motor yacht Unbridled sold (2022-03-11 16:45:00 +0100)">who recently made a $25 million blind purchase</a> of the 58.22-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Unbridled58.22m (191'0&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2009">Unbridled</a>. We also spoke with his long-time broker of 30+ years, Kevin Merrigan of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a>, to find out how he and his colleagues ensure the best deal for their clients and to find out a little more about why now is the time to sell. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/169256/image/large-233ac08e38b985ac9c9d8e481429ed99.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/169256">The recent acquisition of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Unbridled58.22m (191'0&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2009">Unbridled</a>, which is now offered for charter, was made without Glidewell ever seeing the vessel; a unique story, even for a multiple yacht owner. “I have known Kevin Merrigan for many years, and he knows the way I think. We’d been looking for a quality yacht of this size for more than a year and I knew when Kevin called me to tell me about <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Unbridled58.22m (191'0&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2009">Unbridled</a> that she would be the right vessel for me – I trust him completely and know he will do well by me, so we went for it.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/169241/image/large-977c7fb5254637cb2f8abd3010f16431.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/169241">I met up with Jim onboard the vessel during the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palm Beach International Boat Show - 2022">Palm Beach International Boat Show</a> in March. He had stepped aboard the yacht for the first time the day before and by the time I saw him he’d already had an offer on the vessel for $4 million more than he’d paid for her. “I’m not looking to sell the vessel but this really is a bull market in terms of ownership and I feel very lucky to have secured a vessel of this caliber.”Of course, not all brokerage houses are the same and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnso</a>n is certainly one that stands out from the rest. I asked Kevin Merrigan what it is about <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> that ensures clients get the best price for their vessel; “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">Northrop</a> has been around since 1949 and as a result has seen thousands of deals; it is a big statement but I would say we have probably sold more vessels than any other company. We have an incredibly dedicated team, everyone is focused on doing the job right and doing right by our clients.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/116320/image/large-5dc804c22aaacfb633ee6f48b566b2fb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/116320">Looking at the numbers alone, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> reported that in 2021 it sold 41 percent more of its own listings than its next competitor, selling a yacht almost every 48 hours. In addition they secured a 20 percent reduction in the average number of days on the market. Kevin Merrigan commented, “We have state-of-the-art marketing, a proprietary intelligence system, but also partnerships with some of the biggest companies in the aviation industry which have an excellent crossover with yachting.” But what does this really mean for an owner?&nbsp;For Jim Glidewell, the answer lies in the experience. “For every vessel I've sold and purchased, I know that the team has got me the best deal and that my assets and I have been in safe hands.” So what makes a good broker? “You have to trust your broker. That is the person who needs to know everything about the yacht and about you as a buyer. Trust and credibility come into play. If Kevin tells me something is a good purchase and a good deal, I believe him – that is what makes a good yacht broker.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/116326/image/large-d309d2a93e09cd171889230baf9a1090.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/116326">So, why is now the right time to sell your yacht? The answer is multifaceted, and it goes beyond the current strength of the market, which is arguably the most important factor. “Merrigan commented, “In my opinion, there has never been a better time in 35 years to sell a boat than right now. If you are looking to take a break from ownership, move to a different vessel size, or interested in &nbsp;taking your money out of your assets, now is the time. Royal Balk Shipyard appoints Niels Lensen as Sales Director

Balk Shipyard has announced the appointment of Niels Lensen as Sales Director, effective 1 July 2026.

<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">The Italian Sea Group (TISG)</a> has released an updated market disclosure outlining its financial position as of 31 May 2026, providing further insight into the Italian superyacht builder's ongoing restructuring process.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/306419/image/large-23e9c0556425fdb09d6ac0efd3046cf3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/306419">The filing, published at the request of Italian financial regulator Consob, follows <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">TISG's</a> entry into Italy's Negotiated Crisis Settlement procedure in March after the company disclosed internal financial irregularities. The parent company, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">TISG S.p.A</a>, reported a net financial debt of over €179.6 million.The disclosure also details €266.8 million in overdue liabilities across the group. This comprises over €42.6 million in overdue financial liabilities, over €77.6 million in trade payables, around €98 million owed to factoring companies, over €29.3 million in tax liabilities and over €18.1 million in social security liabilities.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/278854/image/large-10473eb6d3fdc1c0fbd3a7cdaa4e5d83.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/278854">According to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">TISG</a>, although the missed repayment of certain loan instalments entitles its lending banks to declare all outstanding borrowings immediately due, they have not exercised this right while negotiations continue under the court-supervised restructuring process.The company also revealed that it has received 30 payment orders from creditors since entering the restructuring procedure on 16 March, representing claims totalling approximately €2 million. As a result of this, the judge did not dismiss the case because Boats Group lacks market power.However, the judge said that Brill Maritime had failed to show that Boats Group engaged in illegal anticompetitive conduct and under US antitrust law, being a monopoly is not illegal by itself.The court repeatedly emphasised that monopoly power is legal, but using that power through anticompetitive behaviour to exclude rivals is illegal.&nbsp;The judge found that Brill Maritime’s three main allegations were insufficient including that Boats Group became dominant by acquiring competitors such as YachtWorld.com, boats.com and YachtCloser.com.The judge said that acquiring competitors is not necessarily illegal and that Brill Maritime had not explained how these acquisitions had harmed competition. The complaint had described the acquisitions as “strategic” suggesting it was more of a successful business move than illegal conduct. The judge explained that Brill Maritime had shown that Boats Group bought competitors, but not that these acquisitions were unlawful. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355039/image/large-513a0ee840e10e5371f647093bba58d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355039">Brill Maritime also claimed that Boats Group's subscription agreements stoped brokers from listing boats elsewhere. The judge examined the contract language and concluded that the provision merely prevented brokers from implying that a YachtWorld or Boats Group listing originated somewhere else. He therefore concluded that you can advertise on YachtWorld and on other sites and the contract simply prevented you from pretending a Boats Group listing came from another platform, meaning the clause is not an exclusive dealing arrangement.Finally, Brill Maritime argued that Boats Group had dramatically increased its prices. The judge responded that high prices alone are not an antitrust violation. The court cited multiple precedents saying a legal monopolist is generally allowed to charge whatever prices it wants. To prove monopolisation, Brill Maritime needed to show that the higher prices resulted from illegal exclusionary conduct.In conclusion, the judge accepted that Boats Group may hold monopoly power in the US online boat-listing market, but ruled that the plaintiffs failed to show that Boats Group acquired or maintained that position through illegal anticompetitive conduct.United States District Judge, Roy K. Altman dismissed the complaint without prejudice, meaning the plaintiff is able to resubmit an amended complaint, with a deadline of 30 June 2026.&nbsp;The lawsuit also contained claims under Florida law, with the federal court declining to hear the state claims as the federal antitrust claims were dismissed.
