In the second phase, the focus will be on implementing this with a comprehensive materials database and user-friendly calculation tool.&nbsp;This will allow manufacturers to conduct eco-design and comprehensively reduce environmental impact, as well as communicate the environmental footprint to consumers, stakeholders and regulators. The project has already been presented to the EU Commission and has received strong support.The threshold of 24 metres was chosen to align with EU regulations, and will be based on a coherent Life Cycle Assessment approach, following the stringent EU Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules.“We need a proactive and pragmatic approach to sustainability and this project will develop the tools that industry needs,” concluded Robert Marx.

Said's investment protected the companies 140 employees jobs and has enabled the yard to continue its production, with the company also announcing the launch of the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent</a> 62 catamaran. A further seven of the model are due to launch this year. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent Yachts</a> has also confirmed that it will launch the first 23.95-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent</a> 80 model in 2025, the first of which were due for delivery this year.&nbsp;Iarrera added, "Our yacht owners are passionate about the brand and the yacht itself, as our very strong pipeline of orders shows. Effective April 8, Rossi has relinquished the powers previously granted to him by the board of directors on April 28 and June 22, 2022. As I could not find anyone who offered what I needed, I thought it was something the world needed! Turns out it did – phew! The tenders and toys had always been a specific area of interest for me as a previous captain and a yacht manager, and I believed I had a very specific skill set which others could use on their projects! Prior to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">SYTT</a> I was Chief Instructor of a yacht training school, so had a huge amount of experience in all manner of craft. I also had a job driving boats in films, followed by captaining various sailboats between the UK and NZ, followed by a few years working for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hill Robinson (Company)">Hill Robinson Yacht Management</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303864/image/large-056c07999a8a74c083bc6d9ac61fd644.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303864">Could you elaborate on some key milestones and challenges that have shaped the company's journey so far?&nbsp;Initially it was just my wife and I working from home but very quickly we grew with seemingly large steps such as getting offices, warehousing and growing our staff. In recent years with Brexit, covid and the Ukraine war this has certainly caused some additional challenges. Some of these are positive, such as us setting up a Monaco company and extending our warehousing to Nice to cater for EU clients.We were ahead of the market (first to market) in the offering we were doing as a business when we set up and that certainly helped us grow as a business. Typical tenders onboard yachts were a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Novurania (Company)">Novurania</a> or a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5361" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zodiac Maritime Ltd. (Company)">Zodiac</a> and toys were usually a Jet Ski and towable. As we know this has greatly changed, with tenders and toys being critical to the enjoyment and marketing of a yacht, with a typical 50 metre spending approximately €100k on a new-build toys setup and yachts having multiple, often custom yacht tenders, limousines and chase boats. In the very early days, many tender manufacturers were unknown and poorly marketed, and our experience made a huge difference in helping guide clients into the best craft for their needs.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303865/image/large-c67e542ebaca2327d33f9f53256808f2.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303865">In terms of milestones one significant one was where we won a Queen's Award and met the Royals at Buckingham Palace in 2017. We also won numerous other awards such as the British Marine Federation (BMF) Best Marine Business to work for, BMF Business of the Year and Sunday Times Fasttrack awards showing company growth. Other milestones are some large new-build orders which we got a lot of PR and marketing from. We have been lucky to work with some innovative owners and an example which instantly springs to mind is the original Ulysses U107 (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4946" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Andromeda107.4m (352'4&quot;)Kleven Maritime AS2016">Andromeda</a>) and U116 (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5796" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Multiverse116.0m (380'7&quot;)Kleven Maritime AS2018">Multiverse</a>) made by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2996" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kleven Maritime AS (Company)">Kleven</a>. On these we completed the full tenders and toy outfitting, showcasing what it is we do. We are now involved in a lot of large new-builds in a similar capacity. In truth, the larger the project the more value we add and are often considered an extension to a new-build team.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203481/image/large-f2ec189e8856bb169bf1f545e7f7c8b7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203481">How has the company evolved to meet the changing demands of the industry?&nbsp;There have been several changes over the years to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">SYTT</a> and we are now a Group of companies. This includes:&nbsp;• <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6281" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shipyard Supply co (Company)">Shipyard Supply Co</a>, setup in 2018, specifically aimed at manufacturing and selling our own deck equipment out of our Suffolk, UK HQ. This includes transom fenders, carbon pillar fenders, tender whips and more.• Incorporating <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">SYTT</a> MC in 2019, our Monaco business, required due to Brexit but also setup to increase our presence to operational yachts and toy rental in the Med.• Launching <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ROAM (Company)">ROAM</a> boats in 2021, our own brand of aluminium adventure yacht tenders.• Bringing to market our own Superyacht Inflatables, manufactured in the EU and made from a recyclable TPU instead of PVC.&nbsp;A constant theme with our businesses has been the development to offer what the market is after and adjust what we offer to suit, constantly being in evolution. The requests we got back in 2011 are very different to what we now receive. An example of this is that we used to get asked to populate a tender garage and had a very loose brief. Nowadays people are more educated and know specifically what they want. One significant change for us as a business is that now, in 2023, an increasing number of clients are after a manufacturer direct relationship. This is partly due to price, to ensure the best value, service and communication. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/221830/image/large-dcfd9578fc59eae1b469069b3c099f14.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/221830">As the CEO, what strategies have you employed to foster a culture of innovation within the company?Innovation has been easy! Clients simply ask us to develop new things, whether that be products or services. In terms of personnel we are a very relaxed office and everyone mucks in at all levels. Office doors are always open and both Claire and I have always shared all information throughout the company. This is done face to face but we also share info internally on newsletters, days out and corporate events. Everyone is as important as each other, that is why we have things such as company wide bonuses, which are the same value if junior admin to senior management.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303862/image/large-e593931158c77696b4e0c14e5b233bca.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303862">Are there any strategic partnerships or collaborations that have played a significant role in the growth and success of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tender and Toys</a>?&nbsp;There are a number of ones here, and thinking about this they mostly rotate around who we like, are friends with and trust. Exceptional relationships on the tenders side have been <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5749" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ribeye Tenders (Company)">Ribeye</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4767" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Compass Tenders Ltd (Company)">Compass</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4611" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Argo Navis (Company)">Argo Navis</a>. On the toys side it is hard to look past JOBE, Watersports World and Flite.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tender and Toys</a>&nbsp;has expanded its scope beyond traditional yacht toys. Can you share insights into the diversification of the company's offerings and how this has contributed to its overall success?&nbsp;There are actually a few ways to answer this. We made our name back in 2011 being a one stop shop. Whether this be fenders, toys, tenders, ropes, gym equipment, procurement and much more. I remember us shipping bottled water around the world for one yacht! We have however had a mini reset in recent years and we now do not market ourselves like this. We no longer do procurement of anything other than tenders and toys. We are very good at what we do, often being seen as a management consultancy and having unique industry experience and do not want to compete with procurement companies selling toilet rolls, crockery, cushions and filters. This change was mainly due to a combination of seeing which products do well for us as a business. Procurement was the worst and one which no staff enjoyed. On the fun front we are working on plans to cycle across the channel on a hydrofoiling bike and skydive from a helicopter in Monaco!Finally, what advice would you give to prospective entrepreneurs in this sector?I would tell them it is terrible, you will never earn money and to look for a different sector! Go and sell crew uniforms or something! Delivered in 2006 by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, the motor yacht underwent a six-month refit last summer. Conducted by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/895" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lusben Shipyard (Company)">Lusben</a> in Livorno, the refit involved a structural extension of three-metres, with an enhancement of the beach club to offer more space for guest activities. The apartment style suite consists of two staterooms, twin bathrooms and dressing rooms, a gym, a pantry, two offices each with a fireplace, and a lounge area.&nbsp;There are twelve guest staterooms in total, making a total possible accommodation for thirty in the owner's party, although the eight guest staterooms on the main deck level combine into four exceptional VIPs. The overall design creates the feeling of a luxe coastal vibe, with details such as door trim and hallway railings repeating across each deck in various materials.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310519/image/large-d9acd8114706f2b79931e9c0f37038bf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310519">The exterior of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2024">Feadship 821</a> superyacht is characterised by a large beach club to the aft of the vessel with sweeping companionways leading down to her expansive swim platform.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310517/image/large-d646b3a8d949d2cc9bc8bca46407cbb1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310517">One of the biggest problems the team faced in building <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2024">Feadship 821</a> would be developing a reasonable way to store compressed liquid hydrogen below deck at -253°C. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> invested in technology to make the transition away from fossil fuels, as when hydrogen is processed in a fuel cell, the only by-products are electricity and water in the form of steam.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310514/image/large-7928e6e601c8c856e4d7a763693038b3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310514">To safely store hydrogen on a yacht, a vessel requires a double-walled cryogenic storage tank, which acts as a well-insulated cooling box in a dedicated room. Together, it takes eight to ten times more space to store hydrogen than the energy equivalent in diesel fuel.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310493/image/large-c5c672622c4ef9da478ddfa5b83a6e70.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310493">In total, the cryogenic fuel tank onboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2024">Feadship 821</a> is capable of holding 92 square-metres of hydrogen. Paired with their switchboard connection to the DC electrical grid, and the vent stacks for the escaping water vapour, this added an additional four-metres to the yacht’s original specifications.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310511/image/large-b0e5320ca135042f5d29eb260a8e9a32.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310511">Importantly, the fuel cells developed for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2024">Project 821</a> can also use easier-to-store methanol, a liquid fuel in ambient conditions. Steam reforms methanol into hydrogen before the electrochemical reaction in the fuel cell."We have now shown that cryogenic storage of liquified hydrogen in the interior of a superyacht is a viable solution. Future innovations on fuel cells and onboard reforming of methanol to hydrogen are on the near horizon,” added &nbsp;Jan-Bart Verkuyl.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310502/image/large-9823c6953ee01488b6c998c778fa97cd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310502">“For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, the bottom line is that the decarbonisation of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>'s upstream process, such as our extensive use of aluminium produced in a more environmentally sensitive way and the production of net-zero carbon-free fuels or hydrogen carriers deserves utmost priority."According to the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI), 70-78 percent of a yacht's total energy use per year is to supply its hotel load, with heating and air conditioning making the largest demands. Although Project 821 cannot carry enough liquid hydrogen to power a crossing, it can generate enough electricity to serve her hotel load.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310497/image/large-a70bb9735da9eb1288b389d185e448e5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310497">For longer travels or when pure hydrogen is not available, the electricity powering the 3,200 kW ABB pod drives comes from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> generators combusting HVO (Hydro-treated vegetable oil). The validity of powering the yacht's generators with HVO was tested and proven on the 2023 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10316" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Obsidian84.2m (276'3&quot;)Feadship2023">Obsidian</a>.&nbsp;In terms of storing energy, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2024">Project 821</a> stores a mere 543 kW hours, as her fuel cell technology can provide an entire week's worth of silent operation at anchor or navigating emission-free at 10 knots.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310500/image/large-002417c095946baf0a990ed9a7c51799.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310500">She features <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>’s most efficient waste heat recovery system, which is capable of heating her pool, Jacuzzi and steam room, as well as the air temperature, towel bars and floors in the guest bathrooms. Further savings in the hotel load will come from a Smart AC system linking sensors to an energy management system that automatically reduces air conditioning or heating in unoccupied guest spaces. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310505/image/large-ed3f8ce69019dd3f46812ece8704b66c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310505">"The brief was to build the greenest and most environmentally advanced yacht ever built, without compromise,” commented Jamie Edmiston, Chief Executive of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>. “It was a huge challenge, but one that the team has embraced and delivered on. How can engineering free us from the evolutionary constraints in superyacht design? This was a question asked by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral Naval Architects</a> when they unveiled a concept in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/25" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Michael Leach Design Ltd. (Company)">Michael Leach Design</a> at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2022">2022 Monaco Yacht Show</a>. Coined Free From Bulkheads (FFB), the proposal stripped down the technical backbone of a conventional yacht by removing restrictive watertight bulkheads. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/283" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luiz de Basto Designs (Company)">Luiz de Basto</a>’s Project Med, presented at last year’s show, takes inspiration from this open architectural concept.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/288121/image/large-808baff3b58ad59e2fbad287108918a6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/288121">Seeing the FFB was a lightbulb moment for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/283" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luiz de Basto Designs (Company)">Luiz de Basto</a>, who has been experimenting with ‘floating’ decks since the 1990s and saw the FFB as the technical solution. Starting with a 60-foot, planing speed boat, the original concept evolved into the 45-metre Yara first published in 2000, which featured an enclosed flybridge floating over an open foredeck.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308862/image/large-706800b85bae9009ab61691d141b7f6f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308862">Yara was never built, but the idea of an open-plan deck with a floating superstructure stayed with de Basto and over the years he sketched variations of the concept. The latest is 92-metre Project Med, which features an almost entirely open-air, open-plan main deck dedicated exclusively to convivial entertainment.“The concept draws inspiration from the traditional towns across the Italian, French and Spanish coastlines, where piazzas are the centre of life,” says de Basto. “I wanted to create an environment for guests to relax together out in the open, and provide a variety of locations for dining, entertainment and socialising.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/288134/image/large-07568ba3e0570bdf15ad2948ec8cfb83.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/288134">A single open deck with a floating, reflective glass superstructure, the concept presented a number of challenges from an engineering perspective, notably the superstructure with its four structural pillars and a central stairwell. The overhanging structure had to be light, but also have a high level of structural integrity to withstand the dynamic loads of a seagoing vessel. It also needed to be able to support the huge glass surface that wraps around the superstructure. As in the design of bridges and buildings, de Basto incorporated lattice-truss engineering into the superstructure design.“I considered buildings like Heathrow Airport with its huge lattice structure,” he explains. “The glass is floating above the frame, but it is quiet inside the building, despite planes roaring overhead. I imagined adapting this for the marine world and realised that the structure itself could become an interesting architectural motif of its own.”Andy Douglas, chief structural engineer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a>, took up the proposal and began researching potential avenues to incorporate such a structure into a yacht. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/288123/image/large-56bd394f1e6a1e940e6f08756bbeaf93.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/288123">“We began by looking at existing examples of architecture and bridges and came up with the solution of having transverse frames with diagonals across it alongside some longitudinal supports,” says Andy. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/283" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luiz de Basto Designs (Company)">De Basto</a> liked the solution, so we created an initial CAD model of the superstructure, before creating an FEA model for analysing the strength and stiffness of the structure and proving it would be able to withstand the loads at sea.”&nbsp;By reducing the large foredeck overhang and adding additional supports to prevent potential drooping, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> was able to demonstrate that the overall concept was viable and the resulting steel lattice-truss arrangement provided the necessary strength, as well as maximising the space between the lattice framework providing large unobstructed windows.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/288136/image/large-1761e06099477cfa0fac2ada3586b96c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/288136">Why the FFB platform?Bulkheads have always been the main engineering limitation for defining a superyacht’s interior configuration. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a>’s FFB platform limits the bulkheads to the decks at waterline level, thereby creating a new, unconstrained deck adjacent to the waterline, which opened up the potential for more layout innovations and, ultimately, an elevated user experience. It also allowed de Basto to create his open-plan main deck and to utilise the whole of the lower deck for guest accommodations. Unlike traditional yacht designs and drawing again on the architecture of Mediterranean coastal towns and villages, the resulting corridors are angular and irregular.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/288132/image/large-7ba594ff80b86a95b6d3fd0227c7e4fb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/288132">Project Med validates the FFB platform by demonstrating that there is demand for a new approach to general arrangements on yachts, but also that a seemingly radical concept can be structurally feasible.“We’ve had a lot of clients interested in something different,” says <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a>’s chief mechanical engineer, Simon Brealey. “These are clients who question the status quo and want to live without constraints near the water. We’re also constantly having to redesign and redevelop platforms to suit different designers' ideas. Sometimes this process of aligning designers and owners &nbsp;to technical &nbsp;requirements can create friction and delay projects &nbsp;so the FFB process removes many of these problems. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/288135/image/large-d135693430e42666401765cfd14aadcd.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/288135">The Skateboard TheoryIn developing the FFB platform <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> first analysed the existing fleet. The majority of yachts had the same double-deck engine room, crew cabins forward, a beach club or garage to aft, and guest accommodations in the middle. Taking an 85-metre yacht of 2,500GT as its baseline, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a>’s goal was to create a new design that opened up these spaces, offering designers more creative potential and more fluid environments for guests to enjoy.Adrien Thoumazeau, Principal naval architect and research &amp; development coordinator at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a>, was the main driver behind the concept. His initial concept, dubbed the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> Skateboard, was a reimagining of the desired result – a clean and empty deck unhindered by technical mechanisms. To execute this goal, Adrien created a parametric model to test the platform with different engineering arrangements.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308863/image/large-d9b7e9924c3efc4a436f7491e5c1d020.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308863">“We played with the parameters of the beam and freeboard to see at which point you can remove the watertight bulkheads from the lower deck, but still be compliant with the stability requirements,” he explains. “We quickly realised that increasing the yacht’s beam was not the way forward, but that increasing the freeboard and raising the deck height was the way we could solve the problem and still be compliant.”Typically a yacht’s lower deck is 0.5 metres above the waterline, whereas the FFB platform has the lower deck at 1.5 metres, at which point the watertight bulkheads can be limited to the technical deck, leaving the lower deck almost entirely free. “The beauty of that,” continues Thoumazeau, “is that in combination with an e-hybrid propulsion system, we’re able to put the engine room fully below the lower deck as well, creating a 70-metre unrestricted lower deck.”&nbsp;An additional advantage of the increased freeboard is that shell door platforms can be opened on the lower deck in the beach club or alongside guest staterooms, and because they are higher above the waterline they are no longer susceptible to wave-slapping. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/288133/image/large-605ecc9ae3df82117a205346acd5b918.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/288133">To remain within the 2,500GT envelope, however, the additional deck height had to be taken from elsewhere and so the superstructure has been reduced, which is the compromise when working with the FFB platform. The result is a more streamlined profile, which is not necessarily a bad thing:“You’re shifting the living and luxury onto the lower deck, allowing the focus of the main and upper deck to be purely for guest experience,” says Brealey. “It’s not a sacrifice, just a different approach, with all guest areas closer to the waterline.”&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> have identified a sweet spot of 75 to 85 metres as the ideal length before running into potential damage stability issues. Naturally, such a dramatic adjustment comes with regulatory challenges, but these are not insurmountable.“Bending the rules in the superyacht world is very difficult, and we’ve definitely faced questions about how the FFB will increase costs and whether it poses extra risks, but we see no potential issues when it comes to regulatory approval,” says Brealey. “We’ve done nothing radical. We’ve worked within the letter of the rules, only looking at them in a slightly different way.”
