After some months of bankruptcy speculation and concerns over the delays in yacht deliveries, the Italian shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent Yachts</a> announced that it would undergo a restructuring to “transition from a founder-funded entity to an investor-funded one.” This April that process came to a close and Michael Said, owner of an in-build <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent</a> 62 and retired lawyer, was reported as the yard’s new majority owner. Michael and his team have since initiated significant changes within the yard to both strategy and personnel. We sat down with him to find out more about his vision for the company going forward and to understand how he plans to rebuild trust in the name <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent Yachts</a>.&nbsp;Firstly, what encouraged you to make this acquisition and where did the journey begin for you?I'm a very, very strong believer in solar, electric boats. I think that's the future. Oil is a limited resource, it's going to get more and more expensive, whereas sailing will always be available to us. There has to be another alternative. So in a way it was very easy for me, when the opportunity came, to say okay I'll jump into the business. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308333/image/large-6e974e48db713ec1223b3e352e089d51.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308333">I also have a yacht in construction and when the issues with the yard began I didn't want to lose that project. I made the decision to fund them in liquidation because no one else did and that would have left all of the current owners without their yachts – in that sense it was an easy decision.Why did you buy a&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent</a>&nbsp;62 in the first place, why not another company such as&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>?This is my first yacht, though I have always been passionate about the sea. I did a lot of research before choosing the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent Yachts</a> and the main thing that swayed me is that they are the only fully solar powered yachts, whereas <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> are hybrid-electric. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> is an excellent company and they perform very well in their niche, but I do not see them as a direct competitor of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent Yachts</a>. We do, of course, have a small generator in case anything goes wrong, but the main energy source is solar and I was very impressed with that. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/312409/image/large-2a9201244771d261a3c55586bcc87134.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/312409">You acquired&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent Yachts</a>&nbsp;with Helios Yacht Investments, is this a new company and your first foray into yachting?Yes it is. &nbsp;I have an absolutely fantastic team around me. People who know what they're doing. Between the new CEO of the company, Fabrizio Iarrera and Steve Bell, the vice chairman of the board, who is looking after my investments, I feel very comfortable that I trust them. I also know everybody at the factory and have made the effort to be very hands-on at the shipyard. Overall I feel very comfortable with our decisions and I plan to be in this for the long term.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/312410/image/large-1771fd8422eb15b390d69bf915a24acc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/312410">The company's reputation has suffered in recent years, particularly with very few yachts in the water. What is your strategy to change this?&nbsp;Right now our entire focus is to get yachts delivered. We are committed to all of those owners who have already invested in us and a lot of them have signed LOI’s, and we are also receiving a lot of interest from new clients. The promise I made when I took over the company was ‘I am one of you, I am in the same boat as I have waited for my yacht and I understand your frustration, but we promise to turn this around.’&nbsp;We are implementing new production lines to increase the speed of production and with every launch, I believe, we will rebuild that trust. It is important to say that we see this as a new business, this is now a corporation not a founder run shipyard. Interview: A new leaf for Silent Yachts?

When it comes to yacht manufacturing, discussions have traditionally centred on the West, particularly in Northern and Southern Europe. Over recent years, the industry has begun to explore the potential of regions such as the Middle East and Asia, though despite this broader perspective, South America, and specifically Brazil, often remains underrepresented in this discourse.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>, located in Osasco, São Paulo, Brazil, originally specialised in manufacturing offshore vessels. However, when Gilberto Ramalho acquired the shipyard in 1985, he transformed it significantly. Described as a 'visionary,' Gilberto aimed to not only own a shipyard but also create and develop a new yachting market in Brazil.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315286/image/large-7c93cf8484c95b2e9a15a07eeaf16006.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315286">Initially, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> offered its own range of yachts and the shipyard invited designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/283" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luiz de Basto Designs (Company)">Luiz De Basto</a> to create their first concept, the Oceanic 53 open cruiser. Subsequently, Ramalho initiated a significant transition by introducing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> yachts to the Brazilian market. Over the next decade, noticing the demand for more expansive outdoor areas due to the tropical climate, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> tailored these yachts specifically for local preferences. Gilberto modified the designs to feature enlarged flybridges, extended sterns and bows, and upgraded air conditioning systems. In 2009, Gilberto Ramalho passed away, and his daughter, Roberta Ramalho, assumed the role of CEO at the young age of 18, becoming one of the youngest leaders in the yacht manufacturing industry at that time. <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht Times</a> writer Enrico Chhibber engaged in an extensive discussion with CEO Roberta Ramalho and Rafael Paiao, the Vice President of Growth and Marketing. The conversation delved into the history and evolution of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>, explored the nuances of the Brazilian yachting market in comparison to other global markets, and discussed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>'s strategic plans for the future.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315279/image/large-8fee710ea53639244f32b86e92b75190.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315279">Since 2010, Roberta has returned <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> back to its origins, refocusing on the development of the company's own line of yachts. Commenting on the evolution of yacht ownership in Brazil, Roberta highlighted the rapid growth of the domestic yachting market, noting significant increases in both the demand for larger yachts and the volume of units sold. She elaborated, “Today 80- foot yachts are more commonly found in Brazil”. However, despite Brazil's extensive coastline, which is ideally suited for sailing, the country's maritime infrastructure has not kept pace with the growing demand. Currently, there is a significant need for larger vessels, yet our marinas and facilities are struggling to accommodate these larger yachts”.As the conversation progressed, Roberta further detailed the differences between European and Brazilian preferences in yacht design. She noted that for Brazilians, the use of yachts is highly personal. “Each client has unique needs. This emphasis on individualisation is highly valued in our market. Brazilians particularly appreciate having tailor-made projects, especially with a focus on customising the exterior”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315296/image/large-3b10e9b313a41aa393396c5806450c4b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315296">Regarding features that are important for the domestic market, Roberta highlighted several key elements including a beach club, an ice maker machine on the exterior, and beer draughts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/228639/image/large-fdc6cfab8c6059ac7895411d7000877b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/228639"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315295/image/large-bd4c9c0edcdfed27064e10f88d05abb5.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315295"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315297/image/large-bf1dfa8deaf2ab3b389a1947edb35313.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315297">Rafael then showed me several images illustrating how the exterior and interior design details of their yachts are seamlessly integrated, aiming to provide clients with a strong connection to the outdoors. “The integration between the stern and the main deck creates a unified level, which gives the impression that the boat is one continuous space. This design makes the vessel feel much larger,” he recounted. Rafael then further emphasised that this design philosophy is particularly appealing to their Brazilian clientele, who have exclusively been <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>’s market.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/228634/image/large-7693cff8464a1f28300ec016ed277e69.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/228634"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315298/image/large-f874a4b982d65d11975d784f71ddd7cd.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315298">Elucidating on the differences in yacht usage, Roberta affirmed that Brazilians typically use yachts for short trips. “They stay for about three or four days, but it’s not for long voyages. Brazilians prefer to cruise around the islands,” she noted.Regarding <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>’s current production capacity and strategy, the shipyard is situated in a former 50,000 square metre railcar factory in Osasco. As pointed out by Roberta, the strategy focus is not on mass-producing vessels; although capable of building up to 200 boats, the shipyard prefers to construct fewer but larger yachts, with an emphasis on luxurious features and customisation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315285/image/large-483a2d8f654a6e5c81115bc0c3215385.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315285">Three years ago, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> expanded its portfolio by launching the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> 24m model. To date, they have built and delivered ten of these yachts, with three more currently under construction. Aside from these and many smaller models, the shipyard has also constructed the largest yacht to date — the 28.9-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> 95 model, with only one built and delivered.Regarding the design of the yachts, Rafael further elaborated: “If you examine our 24-metre model, it features a flybridge comparable in size to that of a 30-metre yacht. Similarly, the stern and the bow of our 24-metre model mirror what you’d typically find on a 30-metre yacht. In Brazil, these expansive features are essential, they maximise the enjoyment of everything the outdoors has to offer”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315300/image/large-1d0c95ccb103985d7e57b05eab33d74c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315300">On how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> distinguishes itself from other Brazilian shipyards such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1180" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCP Yachts (Company)">MCP</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/513" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="INACE Yachts (Company)">Inace</a>, Roberta clarified that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> caters to a distinct clientele. “Their yachts are typically larger, designed for slower and longer voyages, attracting a very different type of customer,” she explained. Rafa further added, “Many of our clients own homes on islands or along the beach. They primarily use their yachts for social gatherings or family time but often return to their homes to sleep. The culture here does not favour long voyages. For example, while filming our 70-foot model in Paraty, I observed that someone with a house there might take a short cruise about 45 minutes to an hour away, simply to visit friends”.When discussing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>’s future plans, Roberta unveiled <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a>'s latest project, a 30-metre yacht, which is set to be their largest project to date, surpassing the previous <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2291" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine (Company)">Intermarine</a> 95 model. It is not unusual, when speaking with yacht owners, to find that very few spend more than a few weeks a year aboard their yacht, even now when superyachts are able to double as home offices and many have impressive autonomous capabilities. One couple that bucks that trend however, are the owners of the 40-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6994" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Happy Me40.24m (132'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Happy Me</a>, who enjoy, not a few weeks, but almost a week per month for the entire Mediterranean summer aboard their semi-custom <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>. We recently sat down with the owners to hear more about the customisations made to their yacht, including the embroidered panels made by a collective of Vietnamese women, their love of adventure and passion for cruising in Croatia. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181215/image/large-c194f92d6c46f8bb1d84ce81077ad125.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181215">Tell us about your history with yachts and how you came to build a superyacht?Husband: It all started with our love of being in nature. Being outside reminds us of our place in the world and being on the water is really the epitome of the outdoors experience – enjoying the day from sunrise to sunset, swimming in the sea and exploring hidden islands. That passion drove us to our first yacht charters more than 15 years ago aboard 55 foot motor yachts, but we were always disappointed that by 2pm captains and crew wanted to leave the anchorages and head into port.&nbsp;We didn't get into chartering to sit stern-to in marinas. We wanted to wake up in private bays and jump straight into the water, but the crew had other priorities – which we also understood. We realised that to really have that autonomy and to go where we wanted to go, we needed our own yacht, so in 2010 we bought a 26-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess</a> in Croatia, which was the moment we met Captain Boris and Chief stewardess Nicky, who are still with us today.Wife: Croatia became our second love and really offered us everything we could want in a yachting destination. By 2016 we were spending weeks at a time aboard and that experience really taught us what we loved (and didn’t love), eventually leading to the decision to build our own dream yacht. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/112577/image/large-c7aa374fb8078904f134f0fc0589f639.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/112577">So in 2017 you acquired an in-build semi-custom&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>&nbsp;Classic Supreme 132, later to become&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6994" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Happy Me40.24m (132'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Happy Me</a>, can you share some of those unique customisations?Husband: For us the sundeck is the best place to be throughout the year, with the great views and best sunshine. Most superyachts feature an open sundeck, but because we start using the yacht in April and continue through to October, it can get windy and chilly so we decided instead to close the central section to create a protected area which is unique for this series. It’s been such a success because it made that deck a lot more versatile and usable, and with heaters inside you have a great spot to sit whatever the weather. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181246/image/large-1cb99dcb8ba2dc6b9894edbe6fcd7007.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181246">The second thing is that most yachts have at least one dining table on every deck, as well as in the main saloon, but for us this just seemed like an unnecessary use of space. We decided instead to use the middle deck as a sporty, fun space where we could play games with friends and entertain. We had a self-levelling pool table and a foosball table made, added a bar with beer taps and this is the space that we use all the time when onboard – whether it's just the two of us or we have friends and it is also loved by our charter guests.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181233/image/large-10201c7c7d050b0f815cdfc433b1f15b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181233">Did you have charter guests in mind when you were designing the yacht, particularly as you designed the interiors yourselves?Wife: It was our dream to create an active boat where we could have fun, so these choices were really personal decisions for us, but it happens that they are also loved by charter guests, especially because she is quite unusual. The most important thing for us was to create a space that felt like home, whereas most boats are fairly neutral in their interior design but we wanted to add our spirit to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6994" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Happy Me40.24m (132'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Happy Me</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181236/image/large-911583c9ebfedd2ab95c636e65639637.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181236">I worked hard on her design because it was important to create something visually beautiful, but that fit with our life. We spent a long time considering the material choices, to make sure she was robust enough to withstand quite a bit of use, but also so that the crew had an easy experience with the boat. We really didn’t want to come aboard and spend our time worrying about spilling things on the floor, so the balance between beauty and functionality was very important.Husband: The interior configuration is also very tailored to our lifestyle, with the formal main saloon and then the more informal and entertainment area above. We have also created a massage room on the middle deck and have two therapists within the crew.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181240/image/large-fc551d86e69603f996acf976f05f7b3c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181240">Can you tell us a bit about the embroidery panels that adorn many of the spaces?Wife: I am half Vietnamese and I travel there often for work on a foundation that I run, alongside my husband. This embroidery technique is deeply embedded in Vietnamese culture and over the years I have much admired the artistry of the work. During one trip some years ago I visited the women who created these panels and spent some days with them learning about their craft and I was deeply inspired by their commitment to their work. It takes around 10 years to qualify in this technique, but if they want to create a face, it is another five years of training. This is something truly unique and I wanted to share this heritage with our friends and the charter guests, so perhaps they can also be inspired by this incredible work. And actually even the embroidery materials have been specially selected for their resilience to salty air to protect them while onboard the yacht!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/314699/image/large-fb768483a6ea8a39b4ee22c94c5a53a4.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/314699">What does a normal day onboard&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6994" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Happy Me40.24m (132'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Happy Me</a>&nbsp;look like for you and your guests? Husband: We really use every part of this yacht, moving from deck to deck throughout the day and even sitting on the observation foredeck when cruising at night and taking in the stars. We love to listen to classical music in the main saloon, and rock music on the middle deck, while the sundeck is where we spend most of our time. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181247/image/large-2a725a2994f7c682a170ed38bc4de39a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181247">We also have the full spectrum of tenders and toys, including a 12-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Technohull (Company)">Technohull</a> Explorer 40 tender with two Yamaha 425 hp engines that we tow behind the yacht. We decided to go for a proper tender so that we can explore hidden bays during the day, pick up guests from beaches safely and easily and tow wakeboards and water skis. We also have two of everything you could need for fun on the water; Jet Skis, e-foils, kayaks and eight bikes (just to name a few). Despite being managed from the US, the yachts in our fleet cruise all over the world; we have yachts that spend time in the Bahamas, the Caribbean, up in New England, on the West Coast from Mexico up to Alaska and more.We even have a new Charter Manager who is based out of San Diego, California and the Baja California area of Mexico, and we are currently promoting that region for charter management and are attracting owners from there.A lot of our boats regularly come over to the Mediterranean in summer and cruise all over the region. We also have a yacht based in Greece that we manage out of our US office.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/312343/image/large-9830cfaa5d4a0e3abbc66b1ab6004b6f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/312343">What goes into the management process to make it seamless and successful?One of the core principles in our charter management process is matchmaking. We try to attract like-minded and commercially-minded owners who really want to give us a shot at chartering. It's important to us that our clients share our ambition and understand what it takes to run a successful charter programme.During the pandemic, there was an influx of yachts that entered the charter market due to the tremendous increase in demand for yacht charters as a safe vacation alternative. What we then experienced was a lot of owners who had quickly put their yachts into the charter market, but maybe without having the experience or education about what makes a charter boat successful, and an unawareness of some of the realities that come with chartering. &nbsp;A lot of owners today are more ambitious, and have certain ideas about revenue from charter in their minds, which applies a lot of pressure. &nbsp;But that's why it's equally as important for us to be able to manage their expectations, right from the get go. We have these conversations with them while we're getting to understand what it is that they're looking for in charter management. &nbsp;We are very thorough, even when we receive interest from owners who are looking to transition from another brokerage house over to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a>. A well-stocked fridge, perfected pantry and state-of-the-art appliances are the ingredients every kitchen onboard a yacht requires. Yet the galley kitchens onboard can, in some cases, be afterthoughts for yacht designers. Enter Brennan Dates, a sought-after superyacht chef with over two decades of experience working on superyachts he has accumulated a know-how when it comes to galley designs, including must-have essentials. I thrive and respect the work that goes into these charter seasons, each set of guests want a different type of service and food requirement which keeps things exciting. This is where I began to think about galley designs and amenities when catering for different clientele.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311009/image/large-5af8fa386560169e1ee4ab4fa98415a6.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311009">What inspired you to turn your experience onboard into a career in design?I’m not going to tell you it was some sort of epiphany moment by any means. It took a few ebbs and flows over the years into the top end of the industry where I realised that all of the service areas of 90% of new-builds are being designed and built by people that have never worked in the hospitality industry. Very few of the designers building galleys are ex-crew members. Once I recognised this issue and paired it with the poorly designed galleys I’ve worked in, I saw a gap in the market and founded <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7686" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Galley Designs (Company)">Superyacht Galley Designs</a>.In retrospect It isn’t just galleys suffering when it comes to design. There are also small and impractical pantries I’ve seen while listening to the service staff complain about bad layouts and not enough space. This is when I decided to start my own business. We’ll make sure service areas are protected and outfitted by professional crew during a build, while at the same time pushing a refit down the line by two to three years. This saves the yacht owner money in the long run while positively impacting the guest experience.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311011/image/large-0799295a4239acf90fc6505137c5557e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311011">Can you share some of the challenges you faced while working in superyacht galleys and how your designs work to overcome them?Problems in the galley design are often around space and lack of proximity. Ideally, wherever the guests eat the galley should realistically be on the same deck - this is great for temperature-controlled delicate food. Another challenge is the hours, ideally if you fit out the galley with the right equipment it can speed up certain tasks immensely.&nbsp;How does your involvement improve the build or refit process onboard?By building a galley from scratch you can install top end equipment that will require little maintenance, ensure less breakdowns, and push back a refit by 2 to 5 years. For example, a galley kitted out with Miele or other domestic appliances is not going to suffice for the constant high-quality food required onboard so ensuring to use industrial brands such as Rational ovens, EGO cook tops, Hobart dishwashers and Liebherr fridges and freezers this will save money in the long run and ultimately prevent any failures during guest trips. Domestic appliances were not designed to feed 30 people three times a day; they break down and negatively impact the guest experience. In my opinion, the busiest spaces on the boat deserve the highest quality equipment and should be designed by people with experience working within that environment.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311013/image/large-79d1021e142b49b976320353b47715cb.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311013">Can you share some of the projects you have worked on during your design and consultancy career?The recently launched 84-metre Feadship, Obsidian has gotten a lot of good reviews from the build team, owner’s team and crew. I also design the galley for the 100-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonrise99.95m (327'11&quot;)Feadship2020">Moonrise</a>. I was proud that this design was replicated on the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6651" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ShadowCAT (Company)">Shadowcat</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nebula68.2m (223'9&quot;)Astilleros Armon2022">Nebula</a> and then again on Moonrise 2. My first design has been repeated twice since I initially drew it. I think that says a lot about having a chef design galleys versus companies with experience designing these very unique spaces. There is a new 140m in the water this year that I’m proud of and I’m in the initial design phase of another 140m+.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/205225/image/large-6dc826418d9254ba1d52f4a29faf6bdb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/205225">Do you find that owners/shipyards recognise the importance of crew areas and has this changed during your career?Yes. I believe when a yacht owner has owned multiple yachts they become very aware of the need for enhanced service areas. With spacious and efficient service spaces you will have quicker more efficient service times and a smaller turnover of staff, which ultimately keeps the owner happy. Strangely, shows like Below Deck have helped showcase the lack of space and amenities for crew onboard, which I think has had a positive impact when crafting crew spaces today. &nbsp;I’ve seen so many instances where the service areas get ignored until the last minute of a build.&nbsp;I also notice how guests are coming into the galley more and more. You, of course, have guests who are foodies who want to see, smell and interact with those of us making the food they are about to eat. Like all Greeks, Nikolas Pateras has an inherent love for the sea, but his passion for seafaring goes beyond that of even his most water loving countrymen. Born into a seventh generation shipping family, Nikolas has been raised on the water, surrounded by yachts and vessels of all sizes. At the age of only 33 he acquired his first yacht, the 31.5-metre classic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dama di Cuori31.5m (103'4&quot;)Benetti SpA1970">Moongoddess</a>, which sparked a lifetime's journey of yacht ownership that has seen him own eight yachts over the past twenty seven years. This January Francesca Webster sat down with Nikolas to hear the story of his life aboard boats.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309866/image/large-0aadf7bb4245a0a318e7159a4533b68d.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309866">Originating from the tiny island of Oinousses, Nikolas’ family earned their living in the 1700s by transporting goods from the Turkish coast to the island of Chios. By the late 1800s, the familial business had grown from small wooden vessels to clipper ships and by 1902 they purchased the first steamship.A legacy of perseverance and determination, the family business has been through good years and tough times, losing all their ships in both World Wars. Nikolas first joined the company Pateras Brother Ltd, in 1986 at the age of 23, and since joining has managed 150 vessels. In 2015 he moved into the container ship market with Contships Management Inc. While cargo ships are his business, it is in yachts that Nikolas and his family get the most pleasure. “My father and uncle had boats from the early 1970s, and my uncle built a trawler with accommodation in the bow. I used to spend all my time onboard, working as crew at the age of 14-15 during the summer holidays learning the ropes. It became my dream to buy my own when I was grown up.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/65838/image/large-cb8c108da5697c524fe824280859432c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/65838">“When I saw <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dama di Cuori31.5m (103'4&quot;)Benetti SpA1970">Moongoddess</a> in Monte Carlo I fell in love. I’d always wanted a canoe stern yacht and she was built like a pocket size mega yacht. White hull and traditional lines. The lady I acquired her from even gave me the Hermes cigar humidor that was originally onboard, which I still have to this day. ”She was the first Adamas, the Greek word for Diamond”. His daughter Anastasia was born in 1996, the year he acquired <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dama di Cuori31.5m (103'4&quot;)Benetti SpA1970">Moongoddess</a> but not long after Anastasia’s birth came a second child, and around the same time many of Nikolas’ friends were also building families and wanting to spend time onboard, so it was time to scale up.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/104517/image/large-37f5a4e07f2627b50397023f38d0d22f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/104517">Walking through Rotterdam airport one morning in 1998, Nikolas picked up an industry magazine and flicking through the pages, found a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/159" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burgess (Company)">Burgess</a> advert for Azzam, which later became his <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Itoto61.0m (200'2&quot;)Dauphin Yachts1987">Adamas II</a> on the market for $16 million. The 59-metre yacht had an interesting history having been owned and built by the Emir of Abu Dhabi as an almost exact copy of the 61-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1435" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanoo61.0m (200'2&quot;)Feadship1979">Sanoo</a>. “She was an interesting size and had nice <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>-esque lines, so I called the broker and offered $8 million. He said that it was never going to happen, and that they had two American clients offering $14. But not long after I got a call back because the Americans would only take the yacht if she was delivered to the Med, and the owner was refusing to send the yacht through the Suez Canal, so whoever took delivery would have to do so in Abu Dhabi. I sent a few guys down there, and they looked her over, said she was in great condition so we put the offer back on the table. The Emir accepted and even left all the furnishings and cutlery onboard, as well as two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Riva S.p.A. (Company)">Riva</a> tenders.’’<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57492/image/large-c2fbcfadd1c4cf04602a352bf9bfd44c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57492">Nikolas brought her back to the Piraeus, where all of his commercial work takes place, for a refit, and he kept the yacht for 10 years, cruising her through the Mediterranean and Aegean with his family. Today she is moored around the corner from the Nikolas’ office in Athens, renamed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Itoto61.0m (200'2&quot;)Dauphin Yachts1987">Itoto</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/13169/image/large-597991ee8fab55be7b4d01b45b5fdf49.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/13169">With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Itoto61.0m (200'2&quot;)Dauphin Yachts1987">Adamas II</a> sold in 2006, along came <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3971" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gloria38.4m (125'12&quot;)Jongert Yachts1986">Gloria</a>, a beautiful 38.4-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/104" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jongert Yachts (Company)">Jongert</a> ketch; “I’d wanted a sailing yacht for quite a few years and had owned smaller yachts in my youth. It was my dream that the children would grow up sailing as I had, but while they loved being onboard, neither took to sailing particularly. Then one day in 2010 my captain called me and said that there was a man sitting on the dock staring at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3971" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gloria38.4m (125'12&quot;)Jongert Yachts1986">Gloria</a>. I sent one of the crew to approach the guy, who turned out to be Peter De Savary, previously owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a>. Peter had fallen in love with the yacht and we came to an agreement for him to buy her.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/11021/image/large-64d186ab952f1e4c0420875fc39db076.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/11021">Famously the only yacht he’d ever made money from selling, after <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3971" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gloria38.4m (125'12&quot;)Jongert Yachts1986">Gloria</a>, Nikolas decided to take a sabbatical from both yacht ownership and shipping, selling his entire fleet of 50 ships in 2008. He became a shareholder of the Greek football team Panathinaikos F.C., in his own words, “the Chelsea of Greece,” but after winning the Super Cup and the Championship “and spending €20 million in the process” he decided it was time to return to &nbsp;shipping, and in turn yacht ownership.Deciding to go for something lighter than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Itoto61.0m (200'2&quot;)Dauphin Yachts1987">Adamas II</a>, Nikolas found the 39.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4408" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arionas39.7m (130'3&quot;)Clelands Shipbuilding Co Ltd1967">Survetta II</a>, described by his daughter Anastasia as “a very special yacht, with a blue hull and yellow funnel, we absolutely loved her, but she was in a very bad state when we bought her.” Previously owned by the Goulandris family, Nikolas renamed her Arionas, after one of the Greek muses, and spent over €4 million on her refit.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/186798/image/large-39898d07ac2b544ef18b7a3b8171ae53.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/186798"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/33705/image/large-418bcf056381e09181447a8d73a7aa5f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/33705">Eventually deciding in 2014 to go for a faster boat, the 38-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> yacht Multiple, later renamed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2134" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Möbius38.0m (124'8&quot;)Cantieri di Pisa1996">Adamas III</a>, he sold <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4408" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arionas39.7m (130'3&quot;)Clelands Shipbuilding Co Ltd1967">Arionas</a> to the opera singer Cecilia Bartoli. Nikolas explains, “Cecilia was in Mykonos with her husband and saw the boat and asked to come onboard. They loved the yacht and asked to buy her. I told them I was considering a faster yacht, but selling her was a big mistake. Despite acquiring two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> yachts over the course of eight years, the style of vessel wasn’t really for him. In 2017 while cruising <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2134" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Möbius38.0m (124'8&quot;)Cantieri di Pisa1996">Adamas III</a> in Corfu, Nikolas saw the 32.72-metre, black-hulled <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally B</a> for the first time. Belonging then to Mr Nathaniel Rothschild and on the market for €4.5 million, Nikolas reached out to the broker to enquire if she could be bought for €2.5 million - the answer was a resounding no.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/118627/image/large-e4568cc43f0bc9b48a65b553238d11e3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/118627">A large beam for a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally</a> at nearly 8 metres and a large central cockpit, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally B</a> is a high performance carbon yacht that also caters to liveaboard periods and the type of entertaining that Nikolas and his family enjoy aboard their yachts. A year after his first inquiry, Nikolas received a call from Mr Rothschild, who was about to launch the 73.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1596" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Planet Nine73.2m (240'2&quot;)Admiral2018">Planet Nine</a>, and was looking to sell <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally B</a>. A deal was made and eventually Nikolas took ownership of the yacht, which at the time was in bad shape having been mostly unused for over a year. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/42647/image/large-94351e4d5ae88a2de2e992836f00685e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/42647">“We brought the boat to Piraeus, did a huge amount of work on her, including painting her hull white replacing the sails and my children and wife fell in love with her. I even tried to sell her once or twice, but my wife threatened to shoot me if I sell the boat – in fact she is a wonderful yacht and we enjoy her a huge amount. Low maintenance, lovely lines that were futuristic at the time, but are now completely contemporary, and very seaworthy, we all enjoy cruising the Greek islands with her.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20360/image/large-6dc60a5d7e95e64bcd393c4c5e4da2d6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20360">Nikolas’ most recent acquisition in 2023 is the 65.25-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adamas V65.25m (214'1&quot;)Cantieri Navali Nicolini Srl1987">Adamas V</a>, previously Yaakun, originally built for &nbsp;the Emir of Qatar as&nbsp;Al Menwar. An unusual yacht in regards to her configuration with all guest staterooms on the sundeck and a huge engine room and crew quarters Nikolas explains that part of his reason for this acquisition was that she was, at the time, the only reasonably priced 60 plus metre yacht on the market. She has since undergone a significant refit of over €5 million to bring her up to European standards under the supervision of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/76" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Vafiadis (Company)">Giorgio Vafiadis</a>. “A very solid, large fast displacement yacht able to cruise at 21 knots, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adamas V65.25m (214'1&quot;)Cantieri Navali Nicolini Srl1987">Adamas V</a> had an unusual appeal to me and I knew after inspection that she had the potential to become a fantastic superyacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20361/image/large-88e6ae6154a3cc3b615ae7dc234a4011.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20361">While Nikolas enjoyed the yacht over the past summer, his eyes are once again set on the horizon and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adamas V65.25m (214'1&quot;)Cantieri Navali Nicolini Srl1987">Adamas V</a> may be soon placed in the market, freshly refitted and looking better than ever. With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally B</a> the family favourite, Nikolas would like to build a 30-metre displacement yacht to cruise between the Greek islands and entertain friends, as he said, “Adamas VI will be the boat they bury me in!”&nbsp;Despite this assurance, it's hard to believe that after an extraordinary repertoire of eight superyachts behind him, Nikolas will be one to throw in the towel, so who knows how many Adamas we may see in the future. Francesca Webster sits down with serial yacht owner Nikolas Pateras, to find more about a lifelong love affair with yachts. 



“When I saw Moongoddess in Monte Carlo I fell in love”—serial yacht owner Nikolas Pateras

While the London-based design firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2 Yacht Design</a> may be best known for its work within the Turkish superyacht sector, having designed more than 30 yachts in the region, the company’s canon is varied in both design style and yacht type. Led by the inimitable Jonny Horsfield, whose frank, straight talking attitude has led to many close relationships with builders and clients, the studio is home to a deep level of expertise, with a team that specialise in some of the most detailed work found in the global fleet. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308201/image/large-7f656666f3ac42ed60e82c2ef71ff971.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308201">A automotive designer by training, Jonny found his place in yacht design in the late 80s somewhat by chance, cutting his teeth under Martin Francis – designer of the highly recognisable superyachts <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A 119.0m (390'5&quot;)Blohm & Voss GmbH2008">Motor Yacht A</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5626" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Odyssey123.2m (404'2&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2015">Golden Odyssey</a>&nbsp;and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/901" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zeus74.5m (244'5&quot;)Blohm & Voss GmbH1991">ECO&nbsp;</a>(to name a few). Returning to London in the early-90s, he joined the team at Donald Starkey, alongside Pascale Reymond and Andy Langton, future founders of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/56" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Reymond Langton Design Ltd. (Company)">Reymond Langton Design</a>. Under Starkey, Jonny specialised in interior design, and he describes those years as “the best years of learning for my career.”When Starkey let the team go during the 1993 recession, Jonny and Steve Howard, another of Starkey’s team, decided to go it alone, utilising their experience and contacts gained under Don to pick up work within the Turkish refit market. Officially coining the company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2 Yacht Design</a> (Horsfield and Howard being the two Hs), <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">Yachting Partners International</a> became a major advocate for the brand’s early success and the refit work was considerable. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/77954/image/large-842bee5b9290948276598155fd15d277.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77954">“It was a different refit market back then, quick and somewhat dirty, but we learned a lot about costs, budgeting and about how to keep the client happy. The issue was that we really weren’t building a reputation in the new-build sector so changing that perspective took a lot of work.” By 2006 however, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> landed its first new-build with the interior of Talisman C, now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/373" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Talisman Maiton54.2m (177'10&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2006">Talisman Maiton</a>, at Proteksan, the shipyard that went on to become <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a>. That first build set the ball rolling for new-builds and also forged a hugely successful relationship with the shipyard. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> has now launched 10 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a> yachts, with two more currently in-build.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280772/image/large-6a60d2ad84d85ed0a07b797a98158dc2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280772">While Turkish yachts are only part of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> story, they do make up nearly half of the studio’s portfolio and in some ways Jonny has taken some negative heat over the years for the interior styling of a number of the yachts. The recent launch of the 80-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a>, which made it onto the cover of a number of publications and garnered millions of views on social media, is an example of one yacht that, while divisive, demonstrates <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2’</a>s capabilities when it comes to bespoke superyacht interiors.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280861/image/large-4fdcc27bcbf5b4f9f516e9fde5e7b11d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280861"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280792/image/large-6a058140153c6376373dfa183966f71c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280792">“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a>’s interior is not my style, it's not representative necessarily of the studio’s style, but it also isn’t the role of a yacht designer to force their own style on a client. We never expected <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a> to be for sale and certainly didn’t expect her to attend a yacht show. For everyone that likes the boat, there is someone that hates it, but it was made for a client who had a very clear vision and it is that vision that we succeeded in creating, which I am proud of.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308206/image/large-38f1f816e359a30c413d3090aca6893e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308206">While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a>, and somewhat the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a> yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6437" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jewels53.0m (173'11&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2023">Jewels</a> launched in 2022, are at one end of the spectrum, other Turkish yachts have also raised the bar for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> and its global positioning. One example of this is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6653" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leona80.0m (262'6&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2023">Leona</a>’s sistership <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana33.3m (109'3&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2006">Tatiana</a> launched in 2020, for which Jonny received a number of plaudits. A contemporary, modern and fresh style, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana33.3m (109'3&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2006">Tatiana</a>’s interiors have been widely acclaimed, with many new and international clients coming to the studio on the back of her success. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vento87.0m (285'5&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2024">Vento</a>, the 87-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a> due to launch later this year, is set to exhibit yet another of the studio’s capabilities, and will be an interesting yacht to see. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308209/image/large-ec49ff618eec8cfda55c4124a2a08c77.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308209">When it comes to his favourite yachts in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> portfolio, the stand out for Jonny today is the 74.98-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a>, launched in 2020 and hailed as the yacht to see at last year’s boat show in Palm Beach. “If you’d asked me a few years ago I would have said the 123-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5968" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Lusail123.0m (403'7&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2017">Al Lusail&nbsp;</a>(exterior by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>), but seeing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a> at Palm Beach, I was really blown away. I’d not seen the yacht outside of the yard, and while she has a fairly standard profile in terms of lines, the detailing in her proportions are lovely and something I am really proud of.” &nbsp;A knock-out at the show, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a> sold during the event, with allegedly as many as 25 millionaires stepping onboard during the course of the week, which is a testament to her design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261070/image/large-877f2ec3b1bec6c03a535c35842aad10.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261070"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5968" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Al Lusail123.0m (403'7&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2017">Al Lusail</a>, one of the largest in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>’s canon, is far more radical in her exterior lines, with interconnecting arches throughout her superstructure. Comparing the two boats Jonny explains, “when you look at her you think, that is a spaceship, but in a way her exterior was easier to design, because the brief was ‘do whatever you want, go wild’. Whereas for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a> the brief was very particular and fairly conservative and that restriction can be challenging. In a way I am more proud of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6415" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arrow74.98m (245'12&quot;)Feadship2020">Arrow</a> and the way we created this ultra-modern and sleek yacht within more traditional proportions.”&nbsp;While talking about large yachts, it's impossible to not to mention <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5306" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean (Company)">REV Ocean</a>, which is due to be the largest yacht in the world when launched in 2026. Now expected to be around 195-metres, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5306" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean (Company)">REV</a> has been through some highly publicised delays and developments, but despite the broad exposure, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>’s has gone somewhat unmentioned. Involved in the project from a very early point, the owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5306" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean (Company)">REV</a>, the Norwegian businessman Kjell Inge Røkke, first saw <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a>’s work onboard the 107.4-metre Ulysses (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4946" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Andromeda107.4m (352'4&quot;)Kleven Maritime AS2016">Andromeda</a>) at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/13" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2018">Monaco Yacht Show 2018</a>. “He didn’t necessarily like the interior of Ulysses, but Kjell admired what we had done at a commercial shipyard, using cruise ship technology and a tight budget, to create a superyacht finish and so we were commissioned to create the interiors of REV.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308208/image/large-f0eaa1a977e141fe4c590f8d017fa765.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308208"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308207/image/large-9548aa44296343ae53a771e521687c0c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308207">With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5306" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean (Company)">REV</a>’s construction now back underway, Jonny and the team have kicked back into gear, digging out the drawings and revising the interiors, where possible, to align with the new exterior. Kept tightly under wraps, Jonny describes her interiors as “minimal and quite industrial, almost like an apartment in regards to the architecture and aesthetic, with features such as perforated metal doors. It was a really enjoyable project to work on and I’m looking forward to getting stuck back into it over the coming months.”&nbsp;While its portfolio is broad, and Jonny remains firm on the stance that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2</a> does not have a house style, when pushed he does infer that the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana33.3m (109'3&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2006">Tatiana</a> is most closely aligned with his own stylistic taste. “I would say that ‘house style’ changes over time and develops with the market. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana33.3m (109'3&quot;)Bilgin Yachts2006">Tatiana</a> has been a really great project for us and we have seen a lot of demand for the modern and neutral aesthetic – you will recognise it to an extent in Al Reem which is due for launch this year. Who is Big Blue Expeditions, the new CA of the 126m M/Y Octopus?

For our latest edition of Entrepreneur in Yachting for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/issue-48-superyacht-times-newspaper" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Issue 48</a> of the SuperYacht Times newspaper, Francesca Webster sat down with Josh Richardson, Founder and CEO of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tenders &amp; Toys</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303861/image/large-4aed28d1595ca94dd8dbe8c2f1ee84d4.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303861">Can you share the inspiration and vision behind the founding of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tender and Toys</a> (SYTT)?&nbsp;Essentially it was due to a need for a go-to company offering management consultancy and procurement for tenders and toys on a new-build project I was working on as a yacht manager. As I could not find anyone who offered what I needed, I thought it was something the world needed! Turns out it did – phew! The tenders and toys had always been a specific area of interest for me as a previous captain and a yacht manager, and I believed I had a very specific skill set which others could use on their projects! Prior to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">SYTT</a> I was Chief Instructor of a yacht training school, so had a huge amount of experience in all manner of craft. I also had a job driving boats in films, followed by captaining various sailboats between the UK and NZ, followed by a few years working for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hill Robinson (Company)">Hill Robinson Yacht Management</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303864/image/large-056c07999a8a74c083bc6d9ac61fd644.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303864">Could you elaborate on some key milestones and challenges that have shaped the company's journey so far?&nbsp;Initially it was just my wife and I working from home but very quickly we grew with seemingly large steps such as getting offices, warehousing and growing our staff. In recent years with Brexit, covid and the Ukraine war this has certainly caused some additional challenges. Some of these are positive, such as us setting up a Monaco company and extending our warehousing to Nice to cater for EU clients.We were ahead of the market (first to market) in the offering we were doing as a business when we set up and that certainly helped us grow as a business. Typical tenders onboard yachts were a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Novurania (Company)">Novurania</a> or a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5361" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zodiac Maritime Ltd. (Company)">Zodiac</a> and toys were usually a Jet Ski and towable. As we know this has greatly changed, with tenders and toys being critical to the enjoyment and marketing of a yacht, with a typical 50 metre spending approximately €100k on a new-build toys setup and yachts having multiple, often custom yacht tenders, limousines and chase boats. In the very early days, many tender manufacturers were unknown and poorly marketed, and our experience made a huge difference in helping guide clients into the best craft for their needs.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303865/image/large-c67e542ebaca2327d33f9f53256808f2.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303865">In terms of milestones one significant one was where we won a Queen's Award and met the Royals at Buckingham Palace in 2017. We also won numerous other awards such as the British Marine Federation (BMF) Best Marine Business to work for, BMF Business of the Year and Sunday Times Fasttrack awards showing company growth. Other milestones are some large new-build orders which we got a lot of PR and marketing from. We have been lucky to work with some innovative owners and an example which instantly springs to mind is the original Ulysses U107 (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4946" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Andromeda107.4m (352'4&quot;)Kleven Maritime AS2016">Andromeda</a>) and U116 (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5796" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Multiverse116.0m (380'7&quot;)Kleven Maritime AS2018">Multiverse</a>) made by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2996" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kleven Maritime AS (Company)">Kleven</a>. On these we completed the full tenders and toy outfitting, showcasing what it is we do. We are now involved in a lot of large new-builds in a similar capacity. In truth, the larger the project the more value we add and are often considered an extension to a new-build team.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203481/image/large-f2ec189e8856bb169bf1f545e7f7c8b7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203481">How has the company evolved to meet the changing demands of the industry?&nbsp;There have been several changes over the years to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">SYTT</a> and we are now a Group of companies. This includes:&nbsp;• <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6281" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shipyard Supply co (Company)">Shipyard Supply Co</a>, setup in 2018, specifically aimed at manufacturing and selling our own deck equipment out of our Suffolk, UK HQ. This includes transom fenders, carbon pillar fenders, tender whips and more.• Incorporating <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">SYTT</a> MC in 2019, our Monaco business, required due to Brexit but also setup to increase our presence to operational yachts and toy rental in the Med.• Launching <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ROAM (Company)">ROAM</a> boats in 2021, our own brand of aluminium adventure yacht tenders.• Bringing to market our own Superyacht Inflatables, manufactured in the EU and made from a recyclable TPU instead of PVC.&nbsp;A constant theme with our businesses has been the development to offer what the market is after and adjust what we offer to suit, constantly being in evolution. The requests we got back in 2011 are very different to what we now receive. An example of this is that we used to get asked to populate a tender garage and had a very loose brief. Nowadays people are more educated and know specifically what they want. One significant change for us as a business is that now, in 2023, an increasing number of clients are after a manufacturer direct relationship. This is partly due to price, to ensure the best value, service and communication. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/221830/image/large-dcfd9578fc59eae1b469069b3c099f14.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/221830">As the CEO, what strategies have you employed to foster a culture of innovation within the company?Innovation has been easy! Clients simply ask us to develop new things, whether that be products or services. In terms of personnel we are a very relaxed office and everyone mucks in at all levels. Office doors are always open and both Claire and I have always shared all information throughout the company. This is done face to face but we also share info internally on newsletters, days out and corporate events. Everyone is as important as each other, that is why we have things such as company wide bonuses, which are the same value if junior admin to senior management.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303862/image/large-e593931158c77696b4e0c14e5b233bca.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303862">Are there any strategic partnerships or collaborations that have played a significant role in the growth and success of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tender and Toys</a>?&nbsp;There are a number of ones here, and thinking about this they mostly rotate around who we like, are friends with and trust. Exceptional relationships on the tenders side have been <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5749" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ribeye Tenders (Company)">Ribeye</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4767" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Compass Tenders Ltd (Company)">Compass</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4611" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Argo Navis (Company)">Argo Navis</a>. On the toys side it is hard to look past JOBE, Watersports World and Flite.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tender and Toys</a>&nbsp;has expanded its scope beyond traditional yacht toys. Can you share insights into the diversification of the company's offerings and how this has contributed to its overall success?&nbsp;There are actually a few ways to answer this. We made our name back in 2011 being a one stop shop. Whether this be fenders, toys, tenders, ropes, gym equipment, procurement and much more. I remember us shipping bottled water around the world for one yacht! We have however had a mini reset in recent years and we now do not market ourselves like this. We no longer do procurement of anything other than tenders and toys. We are very good at what we do, often being seen as a management consultancy and having unique industry experience and do not want to compete with procurement companies selling toilet rolls, crockery, cushions and filters. This change was mainly due to a combination of seeing which products do well for us as a business. Procurement was the worst and one which no staff enjoyed. Since making this change, which felt quite brave at the time, profits have more than doubled in three years and clients are respecting us as the authority on all things tenders and toys.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303867/image/large-189d771c72cd6c82c98a9ecb6a4cbdef.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303867">What exciting developments and innovations can we expect from&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tender and Toys</a>&nbsp;in the near future?&nbsp;We have some great new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ROAM (Company)">ROAM</a> tenders soon to hit the water in 2024. These include a 11 metre owners landing craft, a 9.3 metre and 7.5 metre beachlander, some inflatable landing crafts and an electric RIB. Other than that we are involved in almost all large yacht builds delivered from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> and others. On the fun front we are working on plans to cycle across the channel on a hydrofoiling bike and skydive from a helicopter in Monaco!Finally, what advice would you give to prospective entrepreneurs in this sector?I would tell them it is terrible, you will never earn money and to look for a different sector! Go and sell crew uniforms or something! Thunderball, the 69.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta</a> designed superyacht began construction in mid-2023 and is set to be a very exciting yacht with classic lines and a low profile. Lastly we are working on the 67.6-metre Project 146, which is our latest project signed at the Fort Lauderdale boat show at the end of October last year.&nbsp;The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> Ancona yard is the main <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> construction facility for yachts over 40 metres. Alongside the four <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> superyachts we are simultaneously working on two 42.98-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. (Company)">Pershing</a> 140 yachts, a 50-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/112" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Custom Line (Company)">Custom Line</a> in aluminium and the inaugural 54-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Riva S.p.A. (Company)">Riva</a> 54M.Can you provide us with more details about the collaboration between CRN,&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta Design</a>, and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a>&nbsp;in designing and building Project Thunderball?We are collaborating with an owner who, like myself, has a passion for the sea and a background in sailing yachts. His vision is particularly captivating: he seeks to create a superyacht that melds beauty with functionality. His aim is not just luxury for its own sake, but to conceive a vessel that is both aesthetically appealing and practical, capable of navigating in a variety of global locations.During our initial discussions on Project Thunderball, an all-steel construction was considered. However, after comprehensive assessments and detailed calculations with Vripack, we determined that a blend of steel and aluminium would yield superior stability, improved weight management, and cost efficiency. This approach highlights the owner's commitment to exhaustively exploring all options, to ensure a design that is both purposeful and well-defined.The interior design process involved a significant collaboration between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. This visit played a pivotal role in grasping the owner’s envisioned style for the yacht, aiming for an ambiance akin to a luxurious, transportable villa, suitable for destinations as varied as the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, South America, and Northern Europe.How has the&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a>&nbsp;brand evolved during your tenure, and do you have any future plans or developments in mind for the brand?When I joined <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> nine and a half years ago, I became a part of a brand with a history spanning over 50 years. My initial strategy, perhaps atypical for a new manager in an established company, was to focus on strengthening and reorganising the management team. Turkey-based designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5954" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baran Akalin Design (Company)">Baran Akalın Design</a> has unveiled the renderings for a new 67-metre yacht series. The series includes three different models, Silencieux, Silenzio and Silencieuse, with an explorer and expedition version of each model, with two of the models due to begin construction soon. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266506/image/large-f9a97d1c84aaa87df1990e70af75bdac.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266506">According to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5954" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baran Akalin Design (Company)">Baran Akalın</a> each of the yachts in the series is “fuel-free” and electric, making them zero-emission. “The vessels have been designed to take advantage of base earth technology as an integral part of the yacht's contribution,” explained designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5954" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baran Akalin Design (Company)">Baran Akalın</a>.&nbsp;“In doing away with fossil fuel dependency, we can affirm a positive step in non-fossil fuel initiatives and pure energy production for onboard operations and propulsion.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266507/image/large-7025371db8d6c2055b1a8916fffb5654.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266507">The Silencieux, Silenzio and Silencieuse all feature a sleek and modern exterior design, characterised by clean lines and a contemporary aesthetic. Defined by a streamlined silhouette, they are designed to showcase a bold yet pure profile. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266505/image/large-4802551cbfea0c6e74af7596c88ae125.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266505">Silenzio is described as the electric explorer yacht and features a sharp bow and a slightly raised foredeck. She will begin construction soon with a new Italian brand, under the name NYB220A.&nbsp;She can accommodate up to 12 guests across a six stateroom configuration, with an impressive 70 square-metre owners suite, complete with an 87 square-metre private lounge, dressing room and ensuite bathroom. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266508/image/large-72de4a6246769e586fee711fad0be649.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266508">Her main saloon boasts 150 square-metres of space, with other key features such as a large galley, a fitness centre and sauna. The flybridge of Silenzio includes a Jacuzzi at the bow, alongside a bar, alfresco dining area and sunbeds to cater for every occasion.&nbsp;Silenzio is also equipped with a 300 square-metre beach club and a 170 square-metre garage, which can accommodate a 12-metre boat, submarine, Jet Ski and many other toys. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266516/image/large-b8940ff90a236dc58d841d60b2a3b41e.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266516">Known as the electric ice class expedition model, Silencieux boasts a robust and innovative design tailored for both luxury and adventure in the most challenging environments. She will also begin construction soon under the name NYB220B. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266517/image/large-2b0c9022fd032669bdf850b78e9c658b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266517">Silencieux features a sharp and angular bow, optimised for cutting through ice, while her stern is wide and robust. She shares a lot of the same internal characteristics as her sistership Silenzio, with accommodation for 12 and a spacious owner’s stateroom, lounge, dressing room and ensuite.Her main saloon spans slightly larger at 200 square-metres, but her amenities remain the same with a 170 square-metre garage and a capacious beach club with folding balconies. Her flybridge is equipped with a Jacuzzi and offers 360-degree views.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266511/image/large-1523812ab539dbae0869928159fed925.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266511">Silencieuse is currently under development, but once completed she will be the third model in the 67-metre electric series. “These projects started with the discovery of the lowest deck, called the 'tank deck' by the Reanimer Yacht Works,” explained <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5954" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baran Akalin Design (Company)">Baran Akalın</a>.&nbsp;“Most of the engineering of the boats is undertaken by the RYW, with part of the electrical project carried out by the Turkish company Alke Marine.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266512/image/large-9342f4e638a56c1424fee93185d69777.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266512">In terms of propulsion, the 67-metre electric series uses a non-fossil fuel power technology, which fits into a similar size space as a diesel electric system on a vessel of a similar size. This means that very little change has been made to the bulkhead allocation, as there are no fuel tanks or large batteries.“The non-fossil fuel technology is currently beginning its certification process and is to be made avaialble late in 2024, after a five year period of research and design by Reanimer Yacht Works,” added <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5954" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baran Akalin Design (Company)">Baran Akalın</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/266513/image/large-915b012c1a5d368fe9c878a644adcaf0.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/266513">Both the Silenzio and Silencieux yachts are equipped with 11.4 MW of battery power, which is rechargeable underway, thanks to her H2 generators. As a result of this, they have a 14,000 nautical mile range and can stay up to three weeks at anchor in electric mode.&nbsp;“Since the boat owner wants to order the first boat, they want to see the system working, so a one-on-one demo with real products is currently being prepared. When the system works completely, the first order will be received,” concluded <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5954" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baran Akalin Design (Company)">Baran Akalın</a>.
