But they also do much more, such as training crews using kinematic motion machines that can be programmed to simulate virtually any kind of sea conditions and navigation scenarios. Or testing emerging fuels and power systems in a prototype engine room of the future to find the ideal balance between sustainability and efficiency.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263165/image/large-7434d1499f8ec2db97c34096042c4a81.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263165">And then there’s additive manufacturing. Since becoming more readily available and affordable 3D printing captures fewer headlines, but it’s swiftly being integrated into everyday industrial workflows – including the yachting sector – and it’s safe to say we will see much more of it in the future. We spoke with Justin Beard, Marketing and Sales Development Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Derecktor</a>, to find out a little more about this titan of American yachting. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251765/image/large-20e7c52020c060c2309484b9b543e89a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251765">What were the origins of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor Shipyards</a>&nbsp;and how has it continued after Bob Derecktor?When Bob was in high school, sometime during the 1930s, he designed a 26-foot sloop and built it in his family’s backyard in White Plains, New York – using oak for the frames, fir for the deck and pine for the mast. With the help of a friend, he sailed it to Nova Scotia for the summer.After a couple of years, Bob left college to focus on his passion. He built a 38-foot schooner and sailed it from New York to Baltimore, where he took a job at the Owens Boatyard, advancing quickly through the ranks to become foreman. Eventually returning to the New York area, he worked at the Edgar Johns Shipyard in Rye and Minnefords in City Island, building minesweepers designed to detonate underwater mines during World War II. Bob soon joined the effort himself, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in the early 1940s.&nbsp;During 1947, shortly after returning from the Navy, the young boatbuilder established Robert E. Derecktor, Inc. on Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck, New York. Surrounding himself with talented employees who would continue to grow along with the company, over the years he expanded the yard, following the ebbs and flows of the boatbuilding business — transitioning from wood to aluminium, from cruising boats to race boats, from sail to power, then to larger yachts and commercial boats.Today, four <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor</a>’s facilities span the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. from Maine to South Florida, offering vessel owners and operators everything from marina space to superyacht construction. Sanlorenzo acquires share capital of Sea Energy

Sanlorenzo has acquired share capital of Sea Energy, as it “continues to verticalise its strategic suppliers”. 

Sanlorenzo acquires 49% share capital of Sea Energy for €2.7m

Strong headway has been made in Amsterdam with the forthcoming <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus (Company)">Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus</a>, as construction moves forward. The first phase of the quay is being built and the process of making 22 hectares of extra land is still ongoing but taking shape quickly.&nbsp;The team will enter phase two, building docks one, two and three next month, with completion expected by June 2023. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> has announced their new project Scuola dei Mestieri (School of Trades), a professional training course for 18 to 30-year-olds looking to build a career in boatbuilding.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263034/image/large-67848c46907f1bd04f21730f85a281ec.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263034">The course combines theory and experience in the yard, with the programme offering classroom sessions and workshops to on-the-job training in production department. The course aims to create real career opportunities for participants, such as naval carpentry, deck fitting, engine mechanics, the list goes on.The first edition of the three-month course officially launched in March, and will be held at the “Don Bosco” Professional Training Centre in Forlì. After this first stage in Forlì, the Scuola dei Mestieri will move to Mondolfo and Sarnico in September to involve more young people in the new project. As a world leader in the design, construction, and sales of luxury yachts, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> will share their expertise to the participants. Robert Lama has joined the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> team as a Sales Consultant based out of the Fort Lauderdale office.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/49166/image/large-e22efe6e2a46f17cc0ded2f7ce0609ea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/49166"> Lama began his career in the commercial insurance industry, purchasing a small firm and transforming it into Lama Insurance, which became one of New York’s largest brokerages. After selling the firm to First Niagara Financial Group, Rob was appointed as the company’s Senior Vice President, where he guided the Insurance Division with over $600,000,000 in annual sales. He also founded Lama Commercial Real Estate, where he negotiated site acquisitions for a number of large American retailers, including Walmart, CVS, and Rite Aid. During this time, Lama owned a yacht in Miami for his entire family to enjoy.&nbsp;After moving to Miami, Lama combined his love of yachting with his business acumen, establishing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5135" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miami International Yacht Sales LLC. (Company)">Miami International Yacht Sale</a>. Lama’s business and negotiation experience enabled him to find his niche in the sale of vessels over 30-metres. He now joins <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> in 2023 after many years of successfully running his own yacht brokerage firm. Lama takes pleasure in finding the perfect yacht for his clients, and supporting them throughout the process.&nbsp;

What gulets are to Turkey and Croatia, dhows are to the United Arab Emirates. Wrought with tradition with builds dating back aeons – the dhows are an integral part of UAE culture and heritage and are still widely used today. This tradition has spurred on a strange phenomenon: wooden dhow-inspired superyachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262478/image/large-608b9781f319d0cefba1295d8e9e0f70.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262478">The first dhows that danced across the Red Sea and Indian Ocean were much thinner than they are today. Over the years they’ve stretched and expanded to offer more volume and more stability, but originally they were incredibly slender, packed with goods, darting from port to port.Fisherman and pearl divers had different requirements and needed space to carry their equipment and daily catches. Importantly, they also needed space for more people. These beamier boats are a common sight across the UAE and many are so engorged, swallowing entire restaurants to offer fine dining experiences for hundreds of guests at any given cruise.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262477/image/large-c292da7f2fb1c4adcbbbe9af10bd0569.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262477">The wooden superyachts infuse the two traditions. “The DNA of these superyachts relate just as much to the original dhows as they do to the wide beam and voluminous modern ones,” Mahmoud Itani of IR Yachts told SuperYacht Times. “In this region, onboard space is really important as people want to go out with large groups of friends; usage is very different to Europe.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263196/image/large-96a02755f154b9edeb1b5b06b318e78d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263196">"These yachts are hard to trace as they’re custom-built for individual clients and rarely go on the market – or to any shows, for that matter. “I’ve been attending and organising the Dubai International Boat Show for more than 10 years now, and I can’t remember ever seeing a single superyacht on display that was built out of wood,” Itani reflected.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262487/image/large-807cf5d601fc605e401b8d6626a29e8a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262487"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262484/image/large-ab44a56f02225eb532c9637ba2f5eaf7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262484"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262485/image/large-675093ccd1a8dc465dee62fd80015b59.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262485">It makes sense too, as these yachts are rarely – if ever – put up for charter, kept in private use away from the public eye. Boat Shows aren’t relevant for the shipyard’s marketing purposes either, as these wooden dhow-inspired superyachts are invariably single units and quite often the only one built and delivered by that particular shipyard.“There are a few boat builders in the UAE that would build one of these yachts, but the design rarely comes from their in-house team. The unnamed 50-metre Full Custom wooden superyacht was delivered in 2020 and undertook a maintenance appointment last year, which included a complete repaint with a high gloss clear coat. She’s constructed with a teak hull and GRP superstructure, which has then been clad with teak for that traditional look and feel. Henderson Marine International designed and engineered her.With a beam of 10.56, she’s a metre and a half wider than the average 50-metre motor yacht built after 2018. And once onboard it’s the first thing you notice. She’s cavernous and has been styled with the more familiar trappings, all sourced from Italy at “no expense spared,” as central agent <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bush & Noble (Company)">Bush &amp; Noble</a> explain. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262479/image/large-3b074acd794dfdc3701713a1994606a3.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262479">The main saloon is home to many seating areas for socialising, a breakfast bar, two screening areas and a formal dining area. She can also host five crew in five cabins.When asked about the buying profile for this superyacht, Bret Noble of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bush & Noble (Company)">Bush &amp; Noble</a> anticipates the most attention from Qatar. "There are many well-built traditional dhows in the region," Noble explained. "Qatar is really the number one region for these boats. But they're also not an uncommon sight in and around the UAE. The 50-metre Full Custom superyacht is unique though and interesting for the Australasian market."&nbsp;The second largest known wooden superyacht is the 47.55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4428" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tiger47.55m (156'0&quot;)Unknown2009">Tiger</a>, delivered in 2009 and currently berthed in Abu Dhabi. While the largest superyachts tend to capture the headlines, it is the smaller yachts that are often more intriguing. This is largely because innovation is a key driver of brand awareness in the sub-500 GT sector, the biggest and most competitive portion of the superyacht market. There’s also the option of retractable terraces for the aft suites and master stateroom and the crew circulation is completely separate from the guest areas. Opposite the gym is a double captain’s cabin, although there is a smaller but perhaps more convenient single cabin behind the bridge that could alternatively serve as a ship’s office. In addition to a large galley (with a dumb waiter up to the sun deck) and dedicated laundry, there is even space for extra cold storage.There are more options available on the bridge deck. The aft deck lounge has side glazing but the stern can be left open to create an informal veranda-style space, or enclosed with glass sliding doors as aboard the first hull. It can also be used as the master stateroom with a private aft deck. The beauty of this configuration is that it provides a much bigger garage than usual, frees up space in the transom for a beach club with a sauna, and still keeps the tenders out of sight. The bulwarks fold down during tender operations and as a semi-open space the garage is not included in the GT calculation.As well as the division of the interior volumes, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> also looked closely at how best to move between them. Guests arriving by passerelle when moored stern-to take a short flight of steps up to the upper deck lounge, which becomes the main lounge area with a forward dining room. The robust exterior lines are by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/254" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Stefano Righini Design (Company)">Stefano Righini</a>, a long-term design partner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a>. The four decks sit high in the water in relation to her overall length, but there is something reassuringly purposeful about her profile nonetheless.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203460/image/large-5d2754539ee124b6ec1864f36d58b1bd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203460"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a> president Paolo Vitelli has been closely involved in the B.YOND project from the beginning. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> was one of the first shipyards to build yachts over 30 metres in fibreglass and in a way the B.YOND’s metal construction marks a return to more traditional boatbuilding methods. But in almost every other sense it represents a break with convention, including a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system for reducing NOx emissions and the option of a hybrid propulsion package by Siemens.“Eco-friendliness is a vital consideration and will only become more important,” said Vitelli in a 2018 interview for SuperYacht Times. “I cruise the Med each summer and I must say that some of our beautiful coastline is not as pristine as it should be. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut|Benetti Group</a> has reported that their order book has tripled compared to the previous season, now with a production value of 850 million euros. Its intake over the last 90 days sits at 508 million euros with the demand concentrated in their superyacht sector.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/202038/image/large-77e884acfa18c0569339596b286ecdbc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/202038">This year the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">group</a> has delivered 245 boats in their entire range between the two companies. The 37-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> Motopanfilio, which is currently on exhibition at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2021">Cannes Festival of Yachting</a>, is one of the latest yachts and one of the most innovative vessels delivered by the brand to date.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197082/image/large-03be079a842662d211732616a81c21f6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197082"> The stand-outs are <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut Yachts</a>’ new flagship, the Trideck, of which 10 units had already been sold before the official debut at <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2021">Cannes</a> 2021, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>’s Oasis 40M, which to date has sold 14 units in the 2020-21 season. It is also notable that more than half the value of production (about €570m of the total 850) refers to boats over 80 feet in length.<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NmxutNo0Gqw?&amp;wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe>At geographical level, while there is confirmation that sales are balanced across the three main continents, the APAC region has leapt forward, rising to 15% of total sales and proving to be a particularly promising market.

There was a dealer in New York who I knew from racing and he told me I had to check out the Sunseeker brand. At the time I was building a race boat with Cougar in the UK and went to the Sunseeker yard and loved what I saw. The Camargue was a great boat and I kept it for a year-and-a-half, then sold it for more than I had paid for it! From there I moved up to a 64 flybridge motor yacht, then an 80-foot Baia, and then a 110 Horizon. I must say I learned something from owning all of them. Then came the 40-metre Oasis. You know, you get that 5-foot-a-year disease… It doesn’t always happen on an annual basis, but sometimes you save it up and 5-feet becomes 20!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/183760/image/large-a757ed4706474fa9b3147730eb8de7af.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/183760">Being the first to invest in a new model is a calculated risk. What convinced you to take the plunge?I’ve always been a bit of a pioneer and I say you can always spot the pioneers in life because they’re the ones with the arrows in their back! But seriously, I knew that mine and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>’s values were aligned and those values are integrity, passion and accountability. Benetti had all three in spades, which was more important than being the first customer for the Oasis 40. If you have those values then the product is likely to be outstanding. As a car dealer, I know that boat companies are not always known for their customer service, so when you see a boat company like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> espousing those values I knew it was a marriage made in heaven.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180747/image/large-0595bc0ddaaafa5e79c64640dbd8f48c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180747">At what stage did you get involved in the Oasis project?We had already seen the concept renders, but then they showed us the scale model when we were on our previous boat in Palm Beach. I must have spent 3 or 4 hours just looking at that model from every angle, and it was gorgeous. Italians are known for their styling, right? But this was a radical departure for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>, as it would be for any boat company for that matter. You know, they all say that they blur the boundaries between inside and outside, but all they really do is put in bigger windows. This was a completely clean sheet of paper and we realised that the onboard lifestyle the Oasis 40 could offer us was exactly what we wanted. So it was an easy choice: this is a no-compromise boat.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180078/image/large-ca5f94859a21ab6d1b2414279acb4646.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180078">Why the decision to switch to a displacement hull? &nbsp; &nbsp;Remember I said I learned a lot from my previous boats? Well, I would take a bunch of friends out for a blast off the coast of Connecticut and we’d get back to the dock and go below deck and the doors would be open, plates all over the place, and it would take a day just to put it all back to rights. I crossed one time from Fort Lauderdale to the Abacos and even the fridge was turned over. The fact is: going fast and having a nice yacht that you can enjoy with friends are mutually exclusive. But I have both because we tow a 43-foot, carbon fibre Midnight Express with five 450hp outboards that goes 100 miles an hour. So I can take friends out and scare the hell of them and then go back to the mothership and relax in comfort.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180707/image/large-f80dd50f0e979cf0e0b5bdb593889eb1.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180707"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180076/image/large-6e51fc4121e78fdc4eaa27a79253c8a3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180076">You have Italian heritage; was that a factor in deciding to buy an Italian yacht or just a coincidence?Probably a little more than coincidence. My wife and I have owned a home in Italy since 2015 and we plan on spending a lot of our time – once I stop working full-time – in Italy because we love it. As Americans, we put in 80-hour weeks and run around like headless chickens and we miss the important things in life like spending time with family, breaking bread, enjoying a glass of wine or an aperitivo with friends. That’s the Dolce Vita and the life we love. Did you have any special requests?&nbsp;What I liked about <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5263" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bonetti / Kozerski architecture DPC (Company)">Bonetti/Kozerski</a> was that hadn’t designed a boat interior before, so they had no preconceived notions. It was a fresh start. Enrico had some design criteria from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> and part of what he wanted was to get rid of all the clutter and make the spaces very light and airy and easy to move around. For example, on previous boats it was sometimes hard for the crew to move around the dining table, but on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7198" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rebeca41.14m (134'12&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Rebeca</a> the space planning is great. My wife suggested opportunities to introduce more storage into the design with the rosewood cabinets because you can never have too much storage space on a boat. In the saloon there is also a round ceiling that represents the wheel in my business. I get up and put my bare feet on the teak floor and immediately feel like I’m outside. Depending on where we are we will anchor offshore or stay in port. We love to explore new places and we really enjoyed discovering the Italian coast and places like the Cinque Terre last summer. We also did some entertaining and with 20 or so people on board that wonderful open aft deck really comes into its own, especially when the side platforms are deployed.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180742/image/large-9e0a79de7acef2ee367d3c2d82edf1f8.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180742"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180731/image/large-d0577102c3116cb9085b57b27e596b94.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180731">American owners tend to drive their own boats more than Europeans. Is that the case with you?I’m also a pilot and you find that there comes a point when you’re uninsurable, which is probably a good thing because you just don’t do it enough. It’s fine on a sunny day, but all the training comes in when it’s not a sunny day. I’m very happy to let the captain run the ship – he has the judgement and experience with big boats. You do become a student of the weather on yachts, and also race boats for that matter. They want me to enjoy the whole ownership experience. That’s a pretty profound outlook, especially in the yachting industry, and they’re looking to keep me as a customer for life.
