Southern Wind unveils new 30m SW100X sailing yacht concept

South Africa-based yacht builder Southern Wind has unveiled the first renderings for its 30.48-metre sailing yacht concept SW100X. The new yacht is described by the shipyard as “an iconic fast cruiser, reimagined with experience.”SW100X yacht exterior renderingThe semi-custom SW100X yacht has been designed in collaboration by Nauta Design, which were responsible for her interior and exterior design, while Farr Yacht Design penned her naval architecture. SW100X yacht exterior renderingThe brand new design incorporates the latest technology in naval architecture, aerofoil and hydrodynamic design. She features a modern coachroof which provides 270 degree panoramic views from her saloon.SW100X yacht exterior rendering“The aft cockpit coamings, where steering stations and winches are placed, have been moved maximum outboard to optimise the visibility and line of sight from the helm positions. The position of the winches further outboard also improves the angles of sheets and lines,” explained Massimo Gino of Nauta Design.SW100X yacht exterior renderingPhoto: Southern WindThe SW100X is characterised by a narrower waterline beam and relatively narrower aft sections. Southern Wind have discussed various options for propulsion systems, and keels have been envisioned and accommodated from the first stages of the design process.SW100X yacht exterior renderingThe SW100X features a four stateroom configuration, with the owner’s suite situated at the bow. Her remaining accommodation includes a VIP suite, a convertible double/twin stateroom and twin with the option of extra-long fixed berths.SW100X yacht exterior renderingThe optional aft deck of the SW100X converts into a ‘seaside lounge’ area, with a spacious swim platform for easy access to the water. This is the first time this design has been seen at Southern Wind, in response to a demand for larger swim platforms and more versatile use of the aft deck.SW100X yacht exterior renderingThe lounge can be configured in a variety of ways, with either large sunbeds, L-shaped settees or transformable coffee tables. And not only does this solution create a multi-purpose lounge area, but beneath the lounge, a Williams 435 SportJet tender can be stored.SW100X yacht exterior renderingThe new Southern Wind SW100X yacht features a 4-metre fixed keel with a telescopic keel spanning 3.65 to 5.6-metres. She will also be equipped with a single 305 horsepower Cummins engine with the option for hybrid-propulsion also considered.SW100X yacht exterior renderingThe SW100X yacht is expected to have low emissions by taking power from the battery bank for manoeuvring operations such as anchoring, movements in harbour and pilotage. Her propeller will also act as a hydro generator while sailing to generate power.SW100X yacht exterior renderingSouthern Wind is in conversation with a number of owners who have expressed interest in the model and plan to start building the first mould at the end of April. The first SW100X is expected to be launched as early as 2025.
