Jessamie Rattray sat down with Stewart Richardson, Captain of the 85.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor</a> motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Aquila</a>, to talk about changes to what charter clients want, crew shortages, and life on the sea.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322474/image/large-16962e145d6527bbf36c11a1e05b59fe.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322474">You have spent your life on the water. Can you tell me a bit about it?&nbsp;Sailing is where my journey first started. I began as a sailing instructor in the Solent, UK, before moving to Australia – I would mainly teach people how to sail and instruct yacht masters. Although I thoroughly enjoyed my time, in the early 2000s, it became apparent that the sailing and yachting market in Australia was pretty small and I believed if I wanted to make a solid career out of sailing, I needed to return to Europe.I made the move and began working with a company called Challenge Business. It was a yacht racing business that trained amateurs to sail big boats across oceans. It was brilliant and challenging all in one; you’re a sole captain, with a group of 18 amateurs racing massive distances.&nbsp;That experience, I believe, was the catalyst to where I am now. I then met my partner, who was very focussed on racing. We shared that passion and would eventually spend our time travelling whilst sailing and racing. It was a very transient and nomadic life, following sailing regattas. It’s not the most conventional way to live but we loved it.&nbsp;I remember I was racing from the United States to the UK when I got an email from a gentleman called Skip Novak who was hugely prominent in the sailboat game. He asked if we wanted to come and captain his boat in the Antarctic. We thought it sounded cool, so we did it.&nbsp;My partner and I spent nearly four years running what was basically a charter boat in Antarctica together. We supported a lot of ﬁlmmakers producing research documentaries about wildlife and nature, including National Geographic. We cruised all over the south Atlantic. It was real ‘Wild West kind-of-stuﬀ’, and I loved that. It was both incredibly interesting and incredibly hard, a completely diﬀerent end of the industry to where I am today. After that we spent some time in the Arctic – exploring Greenland and the east coast of Canada – on another boat, a 38-metre explorer motorboat, and that was the ﬁrst time that I thought beyond sailboats to the other side of this industry.&nbsp;When my partner was oﬀered the supreme last sailing hurrah — the opportunity to work on board the J Class <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1934">Endeavor</a>, a beautiful and iconic sailing yacht fresh out of her reﬁt in New Zealand — I was left with the opportunity to think about what I wanted to do. I went back to school, got my tickets and was lucky to join a 52-metre ketch as the mate. That got me into this side of the industry. In my case, I very much used my sailing background to cross over into the superyacht industry. I had a lot of experience captaining boats up until then, but I was now faced with a whole new side to things. It was no longer just pure sailing, now it was customer focused too.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322477/image/large-9ba42a83b20da144a5df823b2de11a82.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322477">And how did you end up as the Captain of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Aquila</a>?&nbsp;Having worked on my fair share of large sail boats, I am well aware of the conditions involved. While there are rules and regulations in place of course, there is always risk involved, particularly on sailboats. I came to a point in my career where I knew I had to ask the question, ‘What’s next?’.I started on a 56-metre motor yacht before getting involved in a new build. Sadly, a cancelled contract meant that the new build never materialised. Fortunately, I was in shipyard with the sistership of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Aquila</a>, undergoing her four-year paintwork, and I got to know some of the crew. I got in contact with the owner’s rep, who conveniently informed me that they were hiring. I started as a mate, and then became rotational captain in 2016. I was captain until 2021 when the family asked me to move across to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Aquila</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322476/image/large-70123287318222713761fc5fab0a9ff4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322476">What are your priorities as Captain?It is my responsibility to make sure we have a good team on board: that is paramount. I build trust with owners, reps, and with the management company. I am skill-focused; I make sure the crew is highly skilled and highly trained.&nbsp;The longevity we have is impressive, with multiple crew members who have been with us for over a decade. It’s a testament to how the boat is run, and it’s a testament to her owners. They are fantastic and so supportive.&nbsp;Why does <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Aquila</a> standout in the charter market?&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Aquila</a> has a strong reputation. She’s an older boat but has been at the receiving end of incredible investment from the owner, including investment in time, in crew and in training. Her reputation carries her, and that is seen with our repeat clients and strong interest. She’s a classic beauty and we have a very high end oﬀering. Our focus on training, reviewing, and building gives us a real quality feel that is evident when our guests step onboard.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322475/image/large-ca263127e3f4bf0c9eb5a8e8227d651d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322475">What is the status with the demand for crew?&nbsp;For a long time, we struggled as a growing industry to ﬁnd enough crew. It's not just a case of having enough crew, but of having the right crew. I think a lot of people, and potentially a lot of the right people, don’t know this industry exists. The market we’re in is a very private one, and one that seems far too unattainable for a lot of people to ever consider getting involved in.&nbsp;Certain media moments have spotlighted the industry and have in turn exposed more young people to yachting. Whether this is a good thing or not, what we need is numbers, and I think that this helps to encourage young people to get involved in the industry, or to show them it’s there at all.&nbsp;How have you seen charter, and what clients want, change?&nbsp;There’s deﬁnitely a big focus these days on equipping the yacht with as many oﬀerings as possible. For crew today, there’s more to it than just having the necessary skills and qualiﬁcations. You have to come with other selling points too, like being a divemaster, a yoga instructor, or a beauty therapist. Designing a superyacht that challenges industry norms requires not just creativity, but also a deep understanding of the market. This is precisely the approach taken by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a>, when they conceived the idea for the Velarca 135—a 41-metre yacht that merges the allure of motor yachts with the elegance and sustainability of sailing yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/326252/image/large-c00ed26e9e250bf40ef13dc2fe07429a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/326252">SuperYacht Times sat down with founder Sami Lehtonen and Jarkko Härmälä of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> to find out more about the inspiration behind the Velarca 135 sailing yacht concept and the future plans for the company.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216497/image/large-3d9dd95f0c4dd4f965ac0f5c0ea44a80.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216497">The Velarca 135 yacht was first unveiled in 2022 as a sailing yacht that combines luxury with style and most importantly, takes into account the growing demand for sustainable yachting. Reflecting on the origins of the Velarca 135 concept, Sami revealed that the idea emerged on a sunny day in August 2021 in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto Park. Accompanied by an advertising agency and several bottles of champagne, the team were spurred by a bold vision. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242232/image/large-8fd4ddc1c0153b0949334960523201b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242232">“We knew that motor yachts dominate the superyacht market with over 90 percent market share, which also means they produce most of the greenhouse gas emissions. So, we decided there and then to start selling sailing yachts to the motor yacht clientele,” Sami explained. This marked not only the birth of Velarca 135 but also the formation of a business model that would allow <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> to enter the superyacht market, without a designer or shipyard already in place.One of the cornerstones of the Velarca 135 design is sustainability, a principle that Sami was determined to uphold without compromising on luxury. “Sustainability is a tricky word,” elaborated Sami. “Many luxury products have a longer lifespan because they are valuable, beautiful, and timeless. When asked about the design process, Sami recounted the strategic decisions that guided the yacht’s development. “We consulted well-known yacht brokers in the Mediterranean to understand what their customers prefer in terms of yacht size and amenities. We also prioritised safety and simplicity, ensuring that even a less experienced crew could manage the yacht with ease.” The design was then handed over to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>, who were given full artistic freedom. “In my opinion, the result was not only quite clever and practical, but also very pretty,” Sami added.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216494/image/large-d23ae9f9a161e73b660e7a5c5bafcac6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216494">The Isola Corvus vision and challengesAs a relatively new player in the superyacht industry, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> brings a fresh perspective, heavily influenced by Sami’s background in offshore racing. “We dared to do what we wanted without asking too many questions,” Sami explained, reflecting on the fearless approach that has driven the company forward. One significant innovation influenced by Sami’s racing experience was the rig design. “I was never a fan of the Chinese gybes, as the boom had the potential to cause damage or injury by slamming from side to side when jibing; so I wanted to eliminate the risks of this happening completely. The Velarca rig is simply a boomless, rope free, two masted solution, with two rolling and self-tacking jibs on each mast and a third jib in an inverted position between the two masts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216499/image/large-e6b6b2919ec59af2b44f6642ef4ec58f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216499">Despite their innovative spirit, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. “We didn’t have a designer or shipyard partner in the beginning, both of which are must-haves to even launch a design,” Sami admitted. However, a fortunate connection with Finnish superyacht hydraulics entrepreneur Nadine Proctor opened doors, leading to a partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>. “By January 2022, the design was ready to launch,” Sami recalled. The next challenge was finding a suitable shipyard, a process that ultimately led them to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5728" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Knierim Yachtbau (Company)">Knierim Yachtbau</a> in Germany, known for their expertise in building lightweight sailing yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216493/image/large-b5f0be620cd828b3d8d58c4e1938e36a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216493">“Velarca is structurally more challenging to build than a motor yacht, so the shipyard must have experience in building demanding lightweight sailing yacht designs,” Sami explained. He also highlighted Knierim’s involvement in the wind power industry as an added benefit that aligns with their sustainability goals.&nbsp;However, marketing a yacht that blurs the lines between motor yachts and sailing yachts presents its own set of challenges. Sami remains optimistic that the industry will eventually create a new category for such crossover yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216498/image/large-29b199b0e1cba3a4051ab412d7aadfa4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216498">The future of sailingLooking ahead, Sami sees potential for the superyacht industry to follow the commercial shipping sector’s lead in adopting sail-assisted designs and alternative fuels like methanol. “The commercial sector can’t afford to over-engineer but seeks straightforward solutions to bring down emissions. The superyacht sector, however, seems more willing to experiment with alternative fuels,” Sami observed. He believes that the industry will eventually recognise the value of sailing and sail-assisted designs as viable solutions for reducing emissions.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> is already planning its next project, though details remain tightly under wraps. “Offering something different is paramount to us because we are still far from being a household name in this industry. In 2007, I transitioned to a role within a family office, where I started working with superyachts. Since then, I've remained in the superyacht industry.My experience in fast ferry operations served as the best “school” for my career, offering many similarities to superyacht operations – technically to some extent, but most importantly in terms of working under pressure. The pressure of ensuring a vessel’s reliability from point A to point B, down to the minute, can have a lot of similarities in the mind set with working fast in the yachting industry.However, the most significant experience and expertise I bring to yachting stems from over 14 years in a family office. This experience is invaluable to our daily work with superyachts. It allows me not only to better understand our clients but also to align with their thinking, both in day-to-day operations and in long-term decision-making. This background has provided me with an essential perspective on what is expected from a yacht owner.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325341/image/large-4d47ba1b3ccddeaf6ae84fd0c879f429.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325341">What is the scope of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7337" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BSM Yachting (Company)">BSM</a>’s fleet and what services does it provide to its clients?&nbsp;We are part of the Schulte Group, one of the world's leading ship management companies. This includes not only recruitment but also ensuring proper qualifications and professionalism. As the industry has grown rapidly, the shortage of qualified crew has increased proportionally.With the level and types of accidents we witnessed this summer, in some cases, it clearly can be attributed to the current crew situation. As part of the Schulte Group, we have significant resources dedicated to crew recruitment and training. I often compare our operations to private aviation and we are now implementing mandatory training programs at all levels. For example, we use our in-house bridge simulator for regular training sessions with officers and engineers, mirroring the standards that owners expect in private aviation.&nbsp;The level of rules and regulations is increasing, and this trend will continue. This is both necessary and beneficial, as there is much room for improvement in applying stronger regulations to private vessels. Too often, the mindset between owners and crew is, "We don’t need to do this because we are private." However, a yacht of the same size and capacity could be either privately or commercially registered, yet the risks are identical.This is why we make no distinction in terms of operation and safety: the same rules and regulations apply, including voluntary ISM compliance.I could go on all day about the challenges we face. What I've noticed over the years is that even within the superyacht industry, there's often a lack of understanding about what true yacht management entails. It's frequently confused with yacht administration.As Yacht Manager, you are taking on continuous risks and liabilities: cyber fraud, legal compliance issues, employment liabilities, pollution concerns, financial expenditures, potential accidents, and so on....<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325338/image/large-a620a1c3e58257c54393ddf65dc17920.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325338">How does a company like&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7337" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BSM Yachting (Company)">BSM</a>&nbsp;guarantee world class service to clients within such a range of yacht sizes from 40 metres to over 100 metres?&nbsp;As mentioned above, having the resources of a large group behind the scenes is essential in today's environment. Patricia Viel added, "In line with the owners' preferences, we selected a very neutral colour palette, using refined natural materials without any added colour. We used materials such as leather, oak, natural raffia, and linen textiles. The colour comes from the natural tones of the materials themselves. The saloon’s furnishings, including a B&amp;B Italia Maxalto sofa and leather pouffe, are designed to blend seamlessly with the setting, enhancing both functionality and aesthetic appeal.&nbsp;Chiara Massarani adds, "in the main saloon and the sky lounge, the storage units on the sides have been designed as freestanding customised units that are lifted from the floor to enhance the fluidity of natural light and the transparency of the internal space. The continuity between interior and exterior spaces is further emphasised by using the same materials both indoors and outdoors. In the upper deck sky lounge, the floor is teak with grey infill, matching the outdoor deck. Sedat Ergun is the founder and CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya Yachts</a> in Turkey. The site of the shipyard in Tuzla Bay, Istanbul, has been in his family since the 1950s and was originally the setting of their holiday home. Over the last decade <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a> has further established itself as a centre for complex refit projects, most notably the restoration of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4894" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cacouna36.2m (118'9&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1932">Cacouna</a>, the 1938 classic yacht by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/292807/image/large-41e55fa461c986c55408cba1a0578e73.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/292807">Sedat studied in the US and spent time as a project manager in the construction industry specialising in enterprise resource planning (he is also a champion skier and part of his office is devoted to a workshop for preparing his ski equipment). This experience gave him an international outlook and business-savvy approach that was rare among Turkish yacht builders when he set up <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya Yachts</a>. Although he generally prefers to keep a low profile, we sat for a candid discussion during a recent visit to the shipyard.Why did you decide to diversify into superyachts and set up&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya Yachts</a>&nbsp;in the first place?&nbsp;The family shipbuilding and repair business was successful, but I wanted to create a top-end facility to show how serious we were about building high-quality yachts. With the exception of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a> [then Proteksan Turquoise], 20 years ago Turkish shipyards building yachts were rough-and-ready places with none of the modern infrastructures you see today. Another issue was the lack of management skills. Working in the construction industry taught me that good project management is essential, which is why we’ve always had a strong planning department at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a>. The industry has matured and today we can compete with the best. Competition from brands like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin</a> is the kind of competition I like, because the more good they do, the better it is for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a> – as long as they price higher than me! <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/206943/image/large-915ce93daa513b3d4b707f949e1e9b4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/206943">Turkey is now rated the second-largest yacht building nation behind Italy and ahead of the Netherlands. How do you account for that growth?We know how to build boats, but Turkey also did well before the 2008 financial crisis from the overflow of enquiries in Europe, meaning when European yards hit capacity people start looking for alternatives and Turkey is ideal in terms of cost and location. The same thing is happening now. Back in 2005 you had more or less the same builders in Holland and Germany as you have today, but here the number of yards has exploded. You have guys renting a shed and trying to build 80 or 90-metre yachts, then 18 months down the road they’re out of business, which is not good for our reputation.&nbsp;That demand has also led to a shortage of skilled workers and subcontractors, which is pushing up prices. It’s easy to see why: If I’m making a decent wage and I’m happy with that wage but everyone is calling me offering me more, then I raise my prices, right? I had a fleet manager in here recently enquiring about a refit and he was amazed that it cost more than in the Mediterranean. Is that still the case?It’s true we don’t get the big budgets, but the price difference is less now than it used to be and the Italians can be very flexible with their pricing. Even when there is zero price difference between Italy and Turkey, 80 percent of clients will choose to build in Italy; not because of the quality, but because Made-in-Italy is a brand and Made-in-Turkey isn’t. By the same token, we can build to the same quality as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> or <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, but our production times are longer because we’re not as efficient as they are. You have class A, class B and class C subcontractors, materials and equipment. But if you go with class C in Turkey, you’re going to end up with a class D product. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a> we project manage the best designers and subcontractors and put it all together in a first-rate facility. That’s why for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2390" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Axioma72.0m (236'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2013">Axioma</a> I chose <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/19" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alberto Pinto (Company)">Pinto</a> for the interior and List for the outfitting, two of the most expensive contractors in the business. What does that say about production at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a>?That we’re custom builders and every yacht I build has to be different. It’s very difficult to sell boats on paper in Turkey, so I also have to build on spec. It can easily take a year from an initial meeting to a signed contract – and a lot can happen in Turkey in one year! If you have a yacht already in build the process moves much more quickly. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2390" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Axioma72.0m (236'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2013">Axioma</a> was built on spec and when I took her to the Monaco Yacht Show she was owned by the yard. The 90-metre project is a classic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. (Company)">Tim Heywood</a> design with broad appeal that I acquired from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ICON Yachts (Company)">Icon Yachts</a> and we’re finishing her with a bigger stern platform and a Sander <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design (Company)">Sinot</a> interior. We have the finances to take that project all the way if we have to. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/64454/image/large-da4aae10b3c7040a7fb6fb68659a31f2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/64454">The catamaran was started as a supply vessel that got cancelled. We’ve now transferred the ownership and it now belongs to me. My sales pitch is that it’s a sub-500GT vessel with the same carrying capacity as a 75-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen</a> that can carry 82 tons of toys and still do 21 knots. Further, I built the bow and stern of 80-metre Project Warrior by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øeino</a> at the same time as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2390" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Axioma72.0m (236'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2013">Axioma</a> and we now have a green light from Lloyds to start that up again – you need to have one big boy on the go all the time. We’re also talking to a client for a repeat of KB6 [<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a>] but over 500GT. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304087/image/large-99577c3684b4bb2ab491a3ec101ef0c8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304087">I want to prioritise quality over quantity and have three custom projects on the go at any one time with good budgets and decent margins. I also want to be closely involved in those projects because I love the project management side. That’s one thing I like about the smaller boats: you have direct contact with the client and If there’s an issue you sort it out face to face. Can you share some of the R&amp;D efforts and investments required to make these innovations a reality?The introduction of the asymmetric concept in the yacht market is the result of the successful collaboration between creative designers with diverse experiences and perspectives and was a true revolution, especially because it broke the traditional bilateral symmetry typical of most yachts. Our focus on asymmetrical design allowed for the optimal use of all available spaces on board, both external and internal, creating a direct connection with the sea: a feeling that our clients increasingly appreciate and want to experience. The development and realisation of the entire asymmetrical project, required an intense effort and an ongoing commitment. Something like this, able to permeate our yachts in their wholeness, had never been done before.&nbsp;As for the Reformer Fuel Cell system, we have been evaluating this technology since 2018, and then invested from 2021 in the development of the methanol Fuel Cell technology thanks to an exclusive partnership signed with Siemens Energy and an EU funded project. The result is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Almax49.99m (164'0&quot;)Sanlorenzo2024">Almax</a>, the first superyacht to use a green methanol Fuel Cell system, completely carbon neutral, which allows generating up to a maximum of 100kW to power all the hotel services on board, covering about 90% of the typical usage time of a superyacht. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/264791/image/large-203d57a7f2c50f8d96cf0536912508c3.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/264791">What future sustainable technologies do you foresee in yacht design?Sustainability will become an increasingly crucial driver of growth in the yachting sector in the near future, because it is the new generations of yacht owners who are demanding it. Although yachting accounts for only 0.22% of the total GHG emissions of the entire shipping sector, with our strategic plan "Road to 2030," <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> has made it its mission to pave the way towards carbon neutrality, making sustainability one of the pillars of its business development. Again, the 50Steel project is a first concrete expression of this commitment.Based on our vision and direct experience, in the next five years we will witness a significant shift; companies producing marine engines are investing more and more in the development of dual fuel solutions, with methanol replacing the traditional diesel propulsion. In the next 8 years, considering the significant acceleration of technological innovation in our sector, it is likely that propulsion powered 100% by methanol will be adopted. The key goal of all shipyards will be to reduce the overall CO2 emissions of their yachts, considering the life cycle of the materials and products used, and engaging the supply chain in a conversion process, which we are already supporting and promoting.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/264793/image/large-7b388e4e8e0f857aea196f197db4c275.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/264793">How does <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> balance the demand for luxury and performance with the imperative to reduce environmental impact?&nbsp;Our ongoing commitment towards sustainable solutions is, of course, intertwined with the indistinguishable identity of the brand, symbolised by elegance and timeless design. One of the most effective examples of how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> manages to combine luxury, performance, and sustainability is the 50Steel, an advanced model not only from a technological standpoint, but also in terms of exterior and interior design. Another extraordinary example is our SP110: an advanced, evolved, and revolutionary proposal that combines green sensitivity with unparalleled comfort and performance. It features a fractional propulsion system composed of three significantly smaller engines, which allow for great flexibility and reduced consumption. SP110 has recently been awarded the prestigious Compasso d'Oro by the ADI Design Museum in Milan, which celebrates virtuous projects that combine quality, innovation, and cultural impact.Can you provide insights into any ongoing or upcoming projects at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>&nbsp;aimed at further enhancing sustainability in your yacht designs?We have several projects currently under development or implementation aimed at further enhancing sustainability. Indeed, we have already signed a second agreement with Siemens Energy for developing even further the Reformer Fuel Cell system, to be completed by 2026, with the goal of expanding the application range of Fuel Cells and thus further reducing size, weight, and costs.&nbsp;As further evidence of our commitment to reducing the environmental impact of our activities, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> has recently signed a €91.5 million agreement with the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT). This agreement aims to implement an ambitious industrial investment program focused on maximum sustainability and technological innovation, particularly regarding green fuels and materials applied to product development, as well as the digitalization of services and processes.&nbsp;All these investments and efforts are aligned towards one ambitious goal: to deliver the first carbon-neutral powered ship by 2030.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/319401/image/large-309bbab7a30e3a2a1bb5cb643b84c888.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/319401">How do you integrate art into your yacht designs, and why do you believe this connection is essential for the brand?Here, too, we have been pioneers for the entire industry, embracing the world of design and architecture, and entrusting the interior projects of our yachts to authoritative international names such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1937" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dordoni Architetti (Company)">Dordoni Architetti</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5082" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel (Company)">Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/78" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lissoni & Partners (Company)">Piero Lissoni</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5082" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel (Company)">Patricia Urquiola</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5705" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Michele Bonan (Company)">Michele Bonan</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/331" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Liaigre (Company)">Studio Christian Liaigre</a>, among many others. This insight allowed for the introduction of new languages and stylistic elements on board, profoundly transforming the classical interpretation of the interior space of a top-class yacht. &nbsp;This fervent contamination with the world of design and architecture has progressively led our shipyard to explore the art world more broadly and deeply. Eventually, we decided to become a true producer of culture and design, inspired by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>'s principle of “exploring the present by continuously surpassing its boundaries'': the crowning achievement of this journey, in 2025, will be the opening of Sanlorenzo Arts Venice, the Group’s hub located in Venice which aims to be a vital cultural institution. The constant dialogue with the protagonists of art and design represents a continuous source of cultural enrichment for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, generating new ideas that are then reinterpreted on board our yachts. Our close relationship with the art world is a key element in continuing to fuel the creative vein that makes our shipyard a recognised leader in the sector of design, elegance, and luxury style made in Italy.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280998/image/large-fd12ba31df7fd056815438b645967d03.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280998">What have been some of the most significant challenges you've faced in your journey of innovation and risk-taking and how have you overcome them?One of the biggest challenges we faced in the recent past was the realisation of the second unit of the line 57Steel, a superyacht which features 5 decks and a tonnage of 1,050 GT conceived as an ambitious project to combine technological development, passion, design vision, comfort, and a sensitivity to sustainability. We have had fantastic success with this model, with two yachts delivered and another two under construction.&nbsp;In detail, the realisation of this unit presented significant challenges from an engineering and technical perspective, such as the relocation of the wheelhouse to an additional deck, the Bridge Deck, allowing the Upper Deck to be entirely dedicated to the owner. Another element that defines the uniqueness of this yacht is the resin floor, a new material for yacht construction, the realisation of which required modifications to the traditional production process. Moreover, one of the features most appreciated is the extraordinary 110 metres–squared beach area, created by opening hatches on three sides which become small beaches on the water's edge.&nbsp;But one of the most interesting challenges was meeting the clients' request for a "masterpiece" within the boat: we identified the central staircase as the key element around which to pivot the surprise effect. The project thus features an imposing central custom-made staircase defined by soft curves, that connects all the decks of the vessel. It was a stimulating challenge not only from a formal and stylistic perspective but also from an engineering and craftsmanship standpoint, due to the complexities arising from placing such a sculptural staircase in such a compact space. The final result is an incredible yacht, one of the most astonishing the market has even seen. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280981/image/large-a35c93330efb741458c3ed65920509e3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280981">Finally, what is your vision for the future of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, and what new frontiers do you aim to explore in yacht design and technology in the coming years?First of all, it is essential to recognise that the future of yachting belongs to the new generations of yacht owners who use their yachts up to 120 days a year, to spend time with their friends and families as well as to work and stay in contact with their colleagues and clients. Vessels, as a consequence, are becoming an increasingly significant part of their owners' lives, who will continue to demand more and more sustainable solutions in terms of materials, energy generation, emission reduction, and consumption optimisation.&nbsp;For this reason, the continuous innovation that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> will bring to the market will have to go along with the development of more sustainable solutions, as already said. Our constant approach to finding cutting-edge solutions in design, technology and sustainability, and our revolutionary spirit, so to speak, that leads us to think outside the box and achieve the unthinkable, have inspired other players to follow in our footsteps. Established in 2007 in Viareggio, Italy, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> originated from Cantiere Fratelli Rossi, a shipyard founded in the 1980s. Initially serving as a subcontractor, specialising in crafting steel and aluminium hulls and superstructures for other yacht builders. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> has since focused on constructing fully custom superyachts using these materials. Notable projects include the 70-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2550" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="High Power III70.0m (229'8&quot;)Rossinavi2011">High Power III</a> (formerly Numptia) and the 63-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5696" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Utopia IV63.0m (206'8&quot;)Rossinavi2018">Utopia IV</a>.Earlier this year, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> expanded its portfolio by introducing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7552" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nolimits (Company)">Nolimits</a>, a new brand that marks a significant shift into the semi-custom market. This line offers five models, each ranging from 30 to 45-metres in length, designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/585" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design (Company)">Fulvio De Simoni</a>.<a href="http://superyachttimes.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Superyacht Times</a> Features Writer Enrico Chhibber met with Federico Rossi, Chief Operating Officer, and Cristian Meriggi, Head of Marketing at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a>, to discuss the company's strategic decision to enter the semi-custom yacht production market, the impact on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a>'s capacity to build fully custom yachts, and future plans.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302251/image/large-e64f4a62ba36eca8ff6666a5a12184c4.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302251">Rossi attributed the strategic decision to establish the semi-custom brand <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7552" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nolimits (Company)">Nolimits</a> to thorough market analysis. He noted,”We realised that this segment lacked high-performance yachts with true marine capability and metal construction, akin to fully custom yachts.”&nbsp;Moreover, he elaborated that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> had received numerous inquiries from potential clients. “The full-custom superyacht is a type of product that generally appeals to experienced owners who are familiar with the sea and have already owned other yachts. These owners know exactly what they want from their customised vessels. To cater to this clientele, we design vessels with a high aptitude for the sea, summarising all the needs identified over decades in the industry.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/80766/image/large-e6913114a360c0b91f052161ffb76309.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80766">When recounting the decision to launch <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7552" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nolimits (Company)">Nolimits</a> as a new brand rather than a line, Rossi clarified that the vision behind <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7552" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nolimits (Company)">Nolimits</a> targets a new market segment. “This brand provides a fleet with a high marine attitude, positioned midway between explorer and superyacht styles, categorising <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7552" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nolimits (Company)">Nolimits</a> in the crossover segment.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302254/image/large-83b607f510a1020af72f732f94dd83fd.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302254">Regarding the origin of the name <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7552" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nolimits (Company)">Nolimits</a>, Rossi explained that it was chosen based on two main factors. First, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> was already accustomed to building fully custom superyachts, and the concept of a semi-custom line meant doing so without limitations, even in the replicable models. Second, these yachts are designed without optional features; everything is integrated, reflecting their commitment to seamless navigation. “The name <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7552" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nolimits (Company)">Nolimits</a> encapsulates this philosophy of unrestricted navigation." They can construct up to four units simultaneously in both Viareggio and Pisa, with the first model already under construction in Viareggio.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311874/image/large-e5727a5f4b325cf4fb707906bac8f66e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311874"> Earlier this year <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> built and launched their first multi-hull superyacht, the 42.75-metre<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12135" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seawolf X42.75m (140'3&quot;)Rossinavi2024">&nbsp;Seawolf X</a>. When asked if the yard aims to continue constructing catamarans, Rossi noted that the shipyard intends to pursue this direction, with a focus on envisioning and developing new propulsion systems. Rossi added that the catamaran concept stems from a vision of more sustainable luxury. He emphasised that catamarans are the ideal platform to integrate technologies involving power management and artificial intelligence with machine learning, to identify potential savings in electrical consumption and diesel fuel use. Given its suitability for this purpose, Rossi sees the catamaran as a cautious but growing trend. As a result, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> has decided to invest in various solutions based on the same Seawolf platform.The conversation then progressed to the adoption of new technologies, such as AI onboard, an area in which <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> has been actively involved. Rossi explained that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a>’s R&amp;D department is located at their facility in Viareggio, where they have established partnerships with leading companies in this field. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304348/image/large-2df9ff142fc9a4b8beb9c731583a8aad.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304348">For Rossi, the issue with artificial intelligence in the nautical world arises when importing software. The problem is ensuring that a yacht equipped with an AI system can guarantee compatibility and upgrades for the next 15 to 20 years with all other devices. “You can't just rely on any software house to promise this unless it's a trusted name like Microsoft or Apple. There's no equivalent level of trust for others in this field. Therefore, we designed our AI system to be 70 percent hardware,” stated Rossi. He further added, “We built the system so that the software component operates on an open circuit, integrating all devices. There is also machine learning software, which can be swapped out with another one without losing compatibility, though it may lose some memory of previous operations. Ensuring data compatibility is essential, but the electronic brain will still function. This was a challenge we had to address immediately.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302256/image/large-c180dfb40be0829b195dd36ae1774bfa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302256">Regarding future plans and developments, Rossi revealed: "We have built new sheds at our facilities in Pisa, not for significant production expansion, but to work more efficiently. Production expansion is very complex. It is an appetite that comes easily, especially in good market conditions, but then you have to meet the commitments made." He elaborated, "Therefore, a supposed upgrade has been more about managing one extra delivery per year. However, this isn't always the case. For example, there might be a year where we deliver four boats instead of three, but the following year, we might not deliver any."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302253/image/large-cf8eeee88a50cd5c92a78d37b73a7ae6.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302253">Rossi further highlighted: “We've had to address the need for space to handle potential increases in deliveries within a year. Sometimes, this happens due to overlapping orders. We have a plan to manage all our deadlines to fill the slots, but since not all projects are the same, you might end up delivering three, four, or five boats in a given year. When production flexibility is required, you might end up with four deliveries at once, necessitating four sheds to store them.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304363/image/large-152f32251fc60bdfd6592882cef55ac9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304363">Concerning the potential expansion of building superyachts over 80-metres, Rossi noted that it is beyond <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a>'s current capabilities. "I believe that up to around 2500 GT in tonnage is a limit that we cannot support with our current infrastructure. However, with our know-how, it might still be possible.""As absurd as it may seem, it's difficult for me to build both a 16-metre and a 130-metre yacht. Everyone has their own target. Superyacht Times met with Federico Rossi  to discuss the strategic decision to enter the semi-custom yacht production market.

For our latest instalment, Francesca Webster sits down with Michael di Luca, founder of superyacht crew recruitment agency <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="mycrewagency. (Company)">mycrewagency</a>.&nbsp;From tradesmen, to trader, to superyacht recruiter. Since founding <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="mycrewagency. (Company)">mycrewagency</a>. in 2017, the company has flourished into one of the best known names in the sector, with a new 30 person office in the UK and the largest social media presence in the superyacht recruitment industry. We sat down with founder Michael di Luca to find out about his career, his perspective on the superyacht recruitment and his plans for the future of the business. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302798/image/large-bac26e89288c464c1544d87ada1a5b7a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302798">Please share your journey to entering the yachting industry and what sparked the idea of opening a crew recruitment firmI started my career as a plasterer, believe it or not. I come from a small area of London and for many people, the path of a tradesman is the expected one, but I realised that working as a builder wasn’t what I wanted to do. I didn’t want to be someone that looked back and regretted their path and because I had that fear from early on, I knew I had to make a change.&nbsp;I decided that finance would be a great career, and I pursued it, getting the relevant qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments and eventually started work as a commodities broker and loved it. I loved the pace of the role, the competitive nature of trading and being pushed to work hard and close accounts.&nbsp;Over the years I worked up the ladder, eventually deciding to make the move into offshore investment banking. A lot of my clients had superyachts and over the years of managing their portfolios, they’d talk to me about their yachts and the struggle they faced with crew recruitment and management.&nbsp;I started to look into the available recruitment agencies in the hope of giving my clients recommendations, but I was specifically looking for regulated agencies who had professional recruitment qualifications, and I couldn’t find any. That is where the spark was ignited, to fill that gap in the market and establish a crew recruitment agency that demanded high qualifications and regulated standards.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302799/image/large-62a9ef5163ae10c6e7c1a25cd2738899.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302799">With no prior yachting experience, how did you get those first clients?The first thing back in 2017 was to get the qualifications through the Recruitment Employment Confederation, and of course learn about recruitment. I spent some time understanding the business of yachting before approaching any potential clients. In the first year I reached directly out to captains, and then gradually built a reputation, getting referred from captain to captain, after which time I reached out to my previous clients with my portfolio.&nbsp;It was important to me not to start with my previous clients from banking, because I wanted to know I was able to provide them the service they had been missing, and I was worried they would just tell me what I wanted to hear without being truly critical of the business – which would have created a weak foundation for the company.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/319130/image/large-d3fcf4b1351d55f81ad65d9f7d9e54e6.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/319130">Could you elaborate on some key milestones and challenges that have shaped the company's journey so far?One of the biggest challenges we faced is that we had limited resources when we started off, so we hired remote contractors. We had people in France, the US, New Zealand, Spain etc, and because I was aggressive in my mentality to both growth and the standards we upheld, it became really difficult to manage. Over time it became apparent that many of those people weren’t looking for a career per se, and so it was challenging to get them onboard when it came to the qualifications, which have always been very important to me.&nbsp;Then trying to generate a company culture within a remote working environment was almost impossible, especially as we had nearly 30 remote contractors at one point.&nbsp;I definitely got carried away in that respect because I ended up fighting fires all the time, eventually we brought in a compliance officer to ensure that everyone was working to our established standards, and it highlighted a lot of leaks that needed to be plugged.&nbsp;I decided to scrap the remote working structure with a view to hiring office based employees who we could invest into with a view to creating a unique and meaningful company culture of which to use as a foundation to grow from, and gradually things began to change.&nbsp;We also decided to flip our own recruitment process on its head; instead of teaching ex. superyacht crew about recruitment, we then hired professional recruiters or individuals from a corporate background and taught them about yachting. The entire experience was a major learning curve for me, especially when it comes to managing a team at the highest level, and in a way it humbled me. It wouldn’t be the company it is today if we hadn’t faced those challenges.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302797/image/large-d6aeb1ae4678657e5dcae5b34b69b520.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302797">Do you think it's to your advantage or disadvantage that you came from outside yachting?I really see it as a superpower, because it allowed me to view the industry through a completely different lens. There are absolutely benefits to coming from inside yachting, but I can hire those experts with that nuanced experience and learn from them. However, when it comes to understanding the corporate structure and commercial viability of a company, my background puts us in a fantastic position which I believe is a key factor to our success and one of many reasons why we stand out from the other recruitment agencies in our sector.&nbsp;Social media has been a big tool employed by the company. Can you tell me a bit about your strategy and why you think social media has such value in today’s market?First and foremost, I’ve always been aware that consumer culture changes and in order to succeed as a new business and beyond, you need to be at the forefront of those changes. I set out from the start with the audacious belief that we needed to be number one on social media, because I believed that it is the best way to show people what you do in a scalable way.Consistency was clearly a major factor of growth and so that is what we did, we have been consistent since the start, sharing a clear message and the growth has demonstrated that we’ve done it right. We are very proud to have created the largest and most meaningful social media following in the superyacht recruitment space, globally.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/319132/image/large-12786a58b41977e8d415b5a954b1e7d8.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/319132">What are some of the biggest challenges that recruiters and captains face in the current climate - we have seen a shortage of crew over recent years for example?There have absolutely been shortages in terms of crew, and particularly in well qualified and experienced crew who are looking for a longer career onboard. As a result we are seeing poaching of the good crew and yachts fighting for committed crew members. On the other hand, salaries are better than ever and while not all yachts are equal, there is generally a lot more awareness today about the importance of quality crew living areas and rotation.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302795/image/large-34a000e86bdc5a8aed92dfe7857cde15.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302795">In January you announced a new Recruitment Retainment Fee, how has the response been?Overwhelmingly good from captains and management teams, to the point that we are going to have to put a cap on new business in the coming weeks, which is an amazing problem to have and tells me we are going in the right direction. Unsurprisingly, there has been significant &nbsp;pushback from the crew recruitment sector itself, with a number of companies commenting across our socials to tell us how bad the new structure is. However, that only validates my founding opinion that we have a different approach to these businesses who believe that there are other ways of doing things. I am not dissuaded from the path we are on and I believe that our approach to researching the market and speaking with stakeholders was and is the correct path. &nbsp;Time, and the market will ultimately tell but so far, things could not be more positive and demand has outpaced even my own aggressive targets. &nbsp;Finally, what advice would you give to prospective entrepreneurs in the yachting industry?Have the right intentions. Especially in the crew recruitment sector where businesses appear and disappear every year. Entrepreneur in Yachting: Michael di Luca of mycrewagency

For our latest instalment, Francesca Webster sits down with Michael di Luca, founder of superyacht crew recruitment agency mycrewagency. 

Founded in the mid-2000s by three partners Peder Eidsgaard, Ewa Eidsgaard and Ben Harrison, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/168" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Harrison Eidsgaard (Company)">Harrison Eidsgaard</a> has evolved into one of the foremost design studios in the superyacht industry. Having bought their own studio and completely redesigned the space during an 18 month renovation, the 16 strong design team is now spread across four open-plan floors, within a bright and contemporary building featuring industrial elements that embodies the collaborative and open source mentality of the team. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/314726/image/large-d1b41c33aa533907165816dd791caccf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/314726">This year is full of milestones for the studio, with the launch or delivery of six superyachts between 80 and 45 metres and the development of its first semi-custom series projects with both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen Yachting</a>. The studio is also finalising the dramatic two-year refit of the 72.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4814" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Albatross72.2m (236'11&quot;)Delta Marine2016">Albatross</a> at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a>, another exciting project that reflects the breadth of the firm's capabilities.&nbsp;We took a tour of their new studio this Spring and sat down with the founders, as well as Senior Design Director Richard Whitehouse, to find out more about how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/168" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Harrison Eidsgaard (Company)">Harrison Eidsgaard</a> has developed over the past twenty years, to get an insight into the upcoming projects and to hear a bit more about the culture that sits at the heart of every project the studio creates.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/314729/image/large-2bfc1b544a3cbbfbc709b267440bd9d6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/314729">Space to reflect ethosUnlike many of its contemporaries, the studio was formed as a collaboration from its very beginning, and as a result there is no one leader that represents all of its projects. With project management split between the four senior team members, the studio is nimble, able to take on a number of significant projects despite its small size in terms of employees. Peder explains, “When we founded the company we always intended to remain small because we believe that the hands-on approach of the senior designers is extremely important. That belief has remained and we are all very active, particularly in the early stages of the design process, which is vital for the development of all team members.”Ewa adds, “Over the years we have grown conservatively, and we are advocates for slow growth. We have worked hard to maintain the ethos of a small firm, and as a result we are very careful when it comes to selecting new team members because our passion is for younger team members to learn all the time from the senior designers.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/314728/image/large-9b8715a217759f40312831080de5b769.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/314728">The design of the studio itself deeply reflects that ethos of collaboration, and though the building is split over four floors, an entirely open and interconnecting stairwell at the heart unites the two design floors in both proximity and sound. While the three founders are above sharing their space with the samples area, their airspace is intrinsically linked with the team on the floor below and as a result their creative discussions are shared with the entire team, allowing them to learn from each other. When discussing the new space with their clients, all shared the same desire to “see where the magic happens”, and to get an insight into the workings of the studio from its surroundings.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/314732/image/large-975307acebacff133b502924b39a8c19.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/314732">Interior DesignThe sample area is a perfect example of those inner workings. The space over with Ewa reigns is open plan with a series of large storage tables, each bursting with fabrics swatches, marble slabs and intricate wall samples, where material choices can be arranged and examined. Like the inner workings of a designer's mind, the team is able to pick over thousands of the world’s best samples and pull together their clients wishes – often with the client in collaboration, working alongside them at the studio to realise their ideas. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/306169/image/large-83e2dd0d9a1b94d7f768948b67ee85d3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/306169">When asked to describe Ewa’s technique and style, Ben and Richard agreed that it is Ewa, who leads the interior team, that is bravest among them, “she is boldest and bravest, always researching, always seeking out the newest techniques, the most interesting materials to incorporate the fashions of the day and to push us into exciting territory.” Inquisitive and palpably excited by design and its ever changing trends, Ewa is passionate about contemporary design, a passion that all founders share.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/306171/image/large-721d0fe8afd7bad49091972345dae8eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/306171">During an interview with SYT in 2018, Ben Harrison commented that it was that very passion that united the founders in the first place. He adds, “We all share that love for modern contemporary design, but our work is not limited to that alone and our projects reflect our adaptability – which is a vital ability when it comes to custom superyacht design.” While the studio has created an array of interior projects, their fingerprints can be seen within a collective purity, spotlighting a limited selection of materials and creating focal points of design within each space.Representative of the studio’s principles, their touch can be seen within the designs of the new Xplorer 80 from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen Yachting</a>. Unveiled in March during the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palm Beach International Boat Show - 2024">Palm Beach Boat Show</a>, the Xplorer 80 is a prime example of the studio’s interior work. Encapsulating the vessels intended use as a go anywhere explorer superyacht, the spaces are balanced between functionality and aesthetic design and the overall result is a serene and luxurious concept.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/104137/image/large-89e38f5e9a14871220366ade1dbe0c83.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/104137">Exterior&nbsp;While all design at the studio is a collaborative effort, Peder Eidsgaard leads the charge when it comes to exterior design. With his appointment as the new President of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2717" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MYBA - The Worldwide Yachting Association (Company)">MYBA association</a> announced in April, SuperYacht Times’ Jessamie Rattray and Francesca Webster sat down with Raphael Sauleau to find out how he intends to bring a fresh approach to the association that has just celebrated its 40th anniversary.&nbsp;What is your vision for your tenure as President of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2717" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MYBA - The Worldwide Yachting Association (Company)">MYBA</a>, particularly in respect of Yachtfolio and its development?As an association, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2717" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MYBA - The Worldwide Yachting Association (Company)">MYBA</a> is run by panels and committees and so it is not the case of changing things as one individual, but our vision as the board is to review our processes and to become faster at developing projects and products for our members. Yachtfolio, which we have been working hard on for the past two years, is going to be a major focus of mine. The platform was quite obsolete in its original format, but we have bought in a company to rebuild the platform and now we will be implementing the ads, because the platform has been missing elements that help brokers to perform.&nbsp;We are also going to have a thorough review of our existing processes, including the yacht show which has been successful this year, but which we can still improve. The location of the future shows are still up for discussion between Genoa and San Remo and we will soon decide which one. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/245836/image/large-83bd41ab5d0f12028e30ada83d3a867d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/245836">So Yachtfolio is now functional and being used by brokers?It absolutely is. Of course as we have rebuilt the platform there are elements that are new and which brokers are not used to yet – so there are some teething issues – but we are going to continue to develop it and iron out any bugs over the coming months with the developers.&nbsp;How does <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2717" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MYBA - The Worldwide Yachting Association (Company)">MYBA</a> feel about other companies coming into the Yachtfolio space, namely Ankor who launched a charter calendar software last year?My take is very simple, we are the one and only tool which has been utilised by brokers worldwide. Obviously it went through some bumpy times with lack of improvement, but we have worked through these and are receiving very positive feedback from the brokers.&nbsp;It is also important to note that we undergo a lot of due diligence for brokers to become <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2717" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MYBA - The Worldwide Yachting Association (Company)">MYBA</a> members. We are diligent with all of the yachts that are given access to the platforms because we want to ensure a certain level of charter boat. This does however mean that some smaller yachts and brokers are not given access to the systems, which is something that we are looking into for the future, perhaps creating a Yachtfolio for smaller boats. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/276439/image/large-5d0e96dd70316d12074110f8ae4542ca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/276439">The Association has historically received some criticism, as you have outlined, what are the main advantages for brokers becoming <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2717" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MYBA - The Worldwide Yachting Association (Company)">MYBA</a> members?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2717" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MYBA - The Worldwide Yachting Association (Company)">MYBA</a> is the pillar of our industry. The association has gone through highs and lows, but the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2717" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MYBA - The Worldwide Yachting Association (Company)">MYBA</a> contract is the contract used by our industry and though it needs refreshment, it is the most recognised and respected out there. Its wide utilisation recognises its importance to the sector. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2717" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MYBA - The Worldwide Yachting Association (Company)">MYBA</a> was founded 40 years ago, and I believe it has been proven as a reliable institution for our industry, irrespective of the bumpy time it may have gone through, I see it as a very strong association going forward. And obviously I'm here to make it stronger and stronger with the board and the members.&nbsp;If you look at the amount of companies applying for membership, and the waitlist for the shows alone, you can see that it has a solid reputation.&nbsp;Is there any conflict of interest as both the CEO of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a>&nbsp;and the President of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2717" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MYBA - The Worldwide Yachting Association (Company)">MYBA</a>?Not at all. Each committee is run by people from each member company. The goal is to have perspectives from each company. Of course that also poses challenges, because we are all working pro bono which means it is harder to be very reactive - but this is one of the things we will be working to improve.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310580/image/large-e83336851740caf22cb3a488a36d7ff7.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310580">For the upcoming conference with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6362" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYBA (Company)">IYBA</a>, do you already have topics on the table?The industry is getting bigger and bigger with more members, and while <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2717" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MYBA - The Worldwide Yachting Association (Company)">MYBA</a> is super strong in Europe, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6362" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYBA (Company)">IYBA</a> is extremely strong in America. So it's a very good thing that both Associations are coming together once or twice a year, and come up with initiatives such as at the, the panel, the conference, which will take place in June. The idea is to discuss the challenges our sector faces, such as the Class Action that is currently taking place in the US, which is of course also impacting European companies with American offices.&nbsp;I believe that this kind of collaboration will make us as an Association stronger so I look forward to our discussions next month.&nbsp;Finally, looking to&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a>&nbsp;in Greece and Fraser’s recent acquisition of Atalanta Golden Yachts, how is the team feeling about another house in this region?As ex-Fraser CEO, of course I knew that part of their strategy was to expand into Greece and it definitely increases the sense of competition having such a strong house making this kind of move. However, I would say that as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> we are very strong in what we can do, we are here at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/203" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mediterranean Yacht Show - 2024">MEDYS</a> with more than 20 excellent yachts and we are regularly signing more vessels onto our charter management, so I am not concerned about the competition – it is always healthy.
