As 2022 comes to its close, there is plenty to celebrate at the Polish shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a>. Just some of the year’s highlights for the forward-thinking builder include unveiling its brand new “green supercat”, the 100 Sunreef Power Eco in the summer, as well as announcing plans to expand into the Middle East with a new shipyard in Ras Al-Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates.&nbsp;This was all topped off by the sales of the first Sunreef 100 Eco catamaran and the Sunreef 43M Eco catamaran this autumn. Here, we catch a few minutes with company founder and CEO Francis Lapp to find out what is on the horizon for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>, both in Europe and beyond. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242997/image/large-2bdd9d4728d9b04eb78544d6170b2365.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242997">How has 2022 been for you, and what do you anticipate for the next few years?All in all, 2022 has been a very good year for us, even despite the impacts of both the COVID-19 pandemic and the war, which can, for example, affect the lead times of supplies. That said, I do not see it affecting the expected delivery times of our ongoing projects – I think 2023 is going to be a great year for us too, and we have deliveries booked in until 2025. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217056/image/large-818b018abf3330c110e0d573f93bcbe7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217056">You unveiled the ‘green supercat’, the 100 Sunreef Power Eco this year. How has the industry responded?We are pleased with the response to this model, which has been overwhelmingly positive. It proves to us that the expectations in terms of size have also changed – some time ago, a 70-footer (21-metre) was considered a big catamaran, but nowadays it is more towards the 80 or 100 size range.&nbsp;For us, it is important to convince superyacht owners through our new models that they don’t necessarily have to go for the huge, fuel-guzzling motor yachts – there are alternatives available. We can offer a different kind of vessel – a much more efficient superyacht. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/247267/image/large-86ac48e75aa0e9714528bfb98116acf1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/247267">What are the three main benefits of choosing a catamaran as your superyacht?First off, the fact that the boats are fairly large enables a different kind of lifestyle on board, as this provides a lot of space to enjoy, meaning that it is a very family-friendly kind of yacht.&nbsp;Secondly, there is also the inherent stability of the vessel. Stability is built into the construction of the catamaran, so they are stable by definition.&nbsp;Finally, catamarans are just inherently more sustainable for many reasons. The drag that catamarans generate is much less than that of a motor yacht, meaning that it is much easier to push them forward using less energy. Plus, thanks to the electric engines, they have plenty of space for solar panels on board and we have the technology to cover our boats with solar panels, so that is very sustainable!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/247264/image/large-23d56592692d1e15e7e84816f5f0d244.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/247264">Last time I<a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/catamaran-boat-sunreef-yachts-ceo" target="_blank">&nbsp;interviewed you,</a> Mr Lapp, you were spending a lot of time personally at the shipyard, ‘on the shop floor’. How involved have you been this year?&nbsp;I am still very involved personally, but I am around a little less in Poland at the moment as I am very focused on our developments in the Emirates, so that is where I spend most of my time these days. I am now 64, and at this age, a lot of people will consider retiring. Instead, I have decided to build a shipyard which is going to be the equivalent of what we have here in Poland.&nbsp;20 years ago, we when started <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> in Poland, Poland was not known for manufacturing luxury goods, and it took us a lot of hard work and effort to convince people that it can be a hotspot for this – now they know that, and the quality of our products proves it.&nbsp;The same thing is going to happen in Ras Al-Khaimah in the Emirates, which is why we still have to spend a lot of time there to develop the facility and ensure that the quality level meets the standards that we have in Poland. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224742/image/large-0d3a4514a83af69b6d9512b7a6104838.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224742">Finally, what should we look forward to seeing from&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>&nbsp;over the next decade?&nbsp;We are pleased to have recently introduced our new models to the industry. This includes our <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> Supreme 70 and 80 Power yachts, as well as the 55 Open Sunreef Power. We are also very busy in talks at the moment about a second 43-metre sailing catamaran and are also making efforts to sign an 80-foot (24-metre) explorer catamaran, but this is still under negotiation, so watch this space!&nbsp;In terms of the next 10 years, we are looking to grow slowly and steadily over the decade to come. Finally, we want to focus very much on the Eco range of catamarans and introduce models that will only be available in Eco versions.&nbsp;

We sat down with Francis Lapp of Sunreef Yachts for an exclusive interview.

Fair winds ahead: Quick Q&A with Sunreef Yachts CEO Francis Lapp

When it comes to disruptive superyacht brands there aren’t many that have caused as much of a riot as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a>. As the Polish shipbuilder pops the cork for its 20th anniversary, it has much to celebrate, having overcome some serious challenges since its inception, all of which have made it stronger. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> is not only disruptive – it’s punk rock and extremely cool.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224720/image/large-baafe4c2e7762ae9ff47bf2640404830.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224720">At the turn of the millennium the superyacht industry was one saturated with monohulls. Those looking for something different, something beamier and something just as luxurious were pressed to find one. Francis Lapp, founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>, was one of those unsatisfied minorities who enjoyed what catamarans had to offer, but was dissatisfied with the quality of finish and the lack of glamour that was available on the market.&nbsp;“I was operating a successful catamaran charter business in Madagascar in the late 1990s, which had a fully booked calendar season after season. But even though I had some of the best catamarans on the market, they were still plastic yachts that didn’t stand up to the level of quality of monohulls from the same category. This had to change,” Lapp explained. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242999/image/large-8b5d75aa5004b21a679f125367d4f355.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242999">Lapp was on a mission and he knew that to achieve the high-standard that catamarans deserved he had to build one himself. During this initial journey he came across the historic Gdansk shipyard in Poland and started to gather a team of experts to help him actualise his vision. In 2003 Lapp’s vision hit the water, as the world’s first-ever ocean going luxury catamaran, the 22.5-metre Sunreef 74 was launched in Gdansk. Not only was this the first catamaran to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with monohulls in terms of quality, it was the first catamaran with a flybridge. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242998/image/large-03c54f83baafdc88927fabbe28a4238f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242998">The company’s success stems from Francis Lapp being an outsider to the world of yacht, he grew up far away from the water of boating and as a result brought a completely new approach to yacht design. But while the launch of the first luxury catamaran was heralded a great success in Gdansk, its initial reception wasn’t well received when it made its debut at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show (Company)">Monaco Yacht Show</a>. Lapp had his hopes high for the event, but he barely had any visitors onboard. It was just too different, too radical: first it was a catamaran and second it was built in Poland. There was somewhat of a lack of trust, as Lapp was presenting an innovative world of firsts that the industry just wasn’t ready for.Luckily for the superyacht sector, Lapp wasn’t deterred. He just had to contend with a larger PR drive and that was for Poland itself. Not only was Lapp pushing a cultural change within the industry, peddling luxury multihulls in a world exclusively reserved for monohulls, but he also had to showcase the breadth of talent that Poland had to offer. Poland is that place in Europe where luxury brands thrive and there’s some serious manufacturing here, and to prove it Lapp started hosting a series of lifestyle events, inviting guests from all over the world. They were a success and helped put Poland back on the map as a provider of outstanding luxury products.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232891/image/large-fe9c83430a584635ed02186db5935c84.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232891"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232896/image/large-541b59c1b11243b60fc558e441da3a4c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232896"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>’s operations in Gdansk were also championing this as Lapp and his team weren’t content with redefining the very definition of catamaran only once, they championed the platform year in and year out with a revolutionary overthrow of what’s possible. In 2008 it launched the world’s first double decked power catamaran, and then two years later it delivered not one but two catamaran superyachts: the 31.1-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 102, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1917" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ipharra31.1m (102'0&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Ipharra</a> and the 34.72-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 114, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/74201/image/large-9329a2f27feb7248e67e94dac5e08628.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/74201"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/74340/image/large-e4f2bbef9e2ce16ebf6b4e296bec3756.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/74340">In just 10 years <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> had cornered the catamaran segment and redefined the very meaning of luxury catamarans. The Poland-based builder had confirmed its prowess and created a new awareness of the virtues catamarans had to offer. Its reception was far from that at its inaugurating Monaco Yacht Show, as in 2011 both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1917" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ipharra31.1m (102'0&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Ipharra</a> were finalists in two coveted ceremonies, the World Superyacht Awards and the Showboat Design Awards.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> had become a formidable force and was rapidly growing in stature. But was soon stopped dead when a fire broke out at its facilities and completely burnt down the production centre, including a number of in-build projects.&nbsp;Lapp was travelling to Turkey at the time for a meeting in Istanbul when he received a call from Gdansk with the news. He jumped straight on a plane back to Poland where his team of around 70 and everyone was looking at him, asking what next? Lapp made the decision to resume operation pretty much immediately. He had so much support from the team, and our clients. Everyone trusted him – and their trust was well placed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/187271/image/large-0f5c4b7b67b6b504a54bd421faf44ba2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/187271">Like a phoenix from the ashes, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> came back with even more vigour. In 2013, just one year after the event, S<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">unreef Yachts</a> presented two new superyacht concepts – a 64m trimaran concept and the Sunreef 165 Ultimate, the first from the popular series. Francis Lapp was also awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year award at the Cannes Yachting Festival. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/215502/image/large-e407475158ad31fec8f78a4c87d25d0a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/215502"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> continued to ramp up production, delivering fresh novel designs year after year. The industry had not only cottoned onto the strength of the Polish builder, but to the value of catamarans more generally. Conversations were rolling and more designers were adding multihulls to their portfolios. Catamarans weren’t synonymous with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>, they were in vogue. And this trend has only continued upwards, especially given the positive advances they offer on the ecological front. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217057/image/large-cdb33dec87739692a755aa801b46f5e5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217057">The Polish shipyard has stayed ahead of the curve and launched the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> Eco brand in 2020, with Nico Rosberg the German-Finish Formula One driver championing the series as ambassador. The series was well received and in 2021 its composite-integrated solar power system won the UIM Environmental Award, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 60 “E” was touted Best Electric Sailboat at the Gustave Trouvé Awards, and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> Eco range won the Eco Green Catamaran category at the World Yachts Trophies. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> continues to capitalise on this success and this year it launched its first-ever yacht to feature a solar skin. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224742/image/large-0d3a4514a83af69b6d9512b7a6104838.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224742">With its line of catamarans in such high demand, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> has outgrown its shipyards in Poland and is now expanding into the Middle East with a new shipyard in Ras Al-Khaimah, which will begin production next year. It also has a number of sales offices around the world; one in Fort Lauderdale, the United States, and another in Istanbul, Turkey.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243000/image/large-fa9ca39c0b2027abbe71c0b0a232e0a1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243000">The decision to concentrate its efforts in the east was driven by a growing yacht culture in the regions, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> want to be strategically positioned to benefit from these blossoming markets. Much like the global stage, both regions are also suggesting a vested interest in what catamarans have to offer.&nbsp;Turkey and the UAE are becoming major markets and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> wants to be closer to its clients in both of these regions. On top, it is a strategic choice to be located in Dubai, the city of the future.
