Superyacht Christina G joins charter fleet of Edmiston

Early March, Jim Offield returned after two years of circumnavigating the globe onboard sailing yacht&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Legend34.14m (112'0&quot;)Alloy Yachts1999">Legend</a>, just in time for his 76th birthday. After a quick tour via FaceTime, Jim bought the yacht and had Bruno prepare it to set sail. Jim made his way to the yacht, where Gibraltar authorities granted him a sole 24 hours of entry before he and his yacht needed to leave.What followed was Jim’s very first Atlantic crossing on a sailing yacht. “We did the Atlantic crossing in August and I absolutely fell in love with offshore sailing. It was an absolute magical trip,” Jim shares. Crossing the Atlantic in the middle of hurricane season is quite a feat, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Legend34.14m (112'0&quot;)Alloy Yachts1999">Legend</a> showed what she was capable of and with Bruno captaining the vessel, Jim felt right at ease.After that, Jim, Bruno and the crew spent four years leisurely exploring New England and the Caribbean, sailing from island to island. Bruno shares how, as ”Jim goes to bed quite early, sometimes, when we sail at 10 or 12 knots through the night, he’ll come up in the morning and not have felt a thing!” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Legend34.14m (112'0&quot;)Alloy Yachts1999">Legend</a> was the right choice of vessel for the journey they took.One of the most exciting legs of the journey was sailing from Cairns to the Cape of Good Hope, through the Indian Ocean. “98 percent of this trip is going to be spectacular,” Captain Bruno had said to Jim, “but two to five percent of it, you're going to have to hold on to your shorts. And it didn't let us down.” The Indian Ocean is notorious for its strong, unexpected monsoon-like winds and heavy rains, accompanied by a chaotic sea with waves coming in from all directions. “In the middle of one of those days when it was full on, Jim looked at me and he goes, ‘it's worse than you said it would be!’”. As the duo tells the story, Bruno laughs, “I always said to Jim, ‘you haven’t crossed an ocean until you’ve sailed an ocean!”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397339/image/large-9ffd3d4bc8d1c964c524477a86d0a59e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397339">Harmonious sailingHaving known each other for 25 years, Jim and Bruno share a special bond. Something that, in turn, had a positive effect on the rest of the crew. ”We travelled with an amazing group of people and many friendships were born,” shares Jim. “Being alone in the ocean for so many days with such a great crew, it’s the experience of a lifetime. It was harmony in every sense of the word.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397343/image/large-317e67d451ee84abdd838a57bf53debb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397343">Captain Bruno points out how Jim is also very conscientious of the crew’s well-being. “One day, in Tonga, Jim and his family went diving with the humpback whales. But I know that, if I don’t also get a boat for the crew to go diving, Jim won’t be happy.” Everywhere <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Legend34.14m (112'0&quot;)Alloy Yachts1999">Legend</a> sailed, Jim shared his experiences with the crew. “We would go diving, hiking up a mountain, or skydiving, and leave to go sailing in the evening but no one would complain because we had the most terrific day,” Bruno notes. “They were &nbsp;just like, ‘okay, what's the next adventure?”To have such camaraderie onboard over the course of two years has made the journey even more valuable to Jim. “Being 75 years old, there are no words to describe how absolutely magnificent it was to be able to do this, as an owner; to be part of the crew, to enjoy such a journey. Yet a trip like this you can only do once for the first time: “I just don't think the repeat of it would ever compare to what we just did,” Jim says“I’m a big believer in not duplicating: there are other parts of the world and other adventures I want to do. I’m starting to feel the age a little bit, so I’m ready for a bit more comfort” Jim shares. Now, Jim is looking to explore on a more comfortable, slightly smaller yacht, “but I’ll never give up travelling the ocean!”“The boat was always there for us. She was amazing” shares Bruno. “Jim and I both feel that it's a pity we don't see more owners taking on these experiences.” The hope is that Jim’s experience will inspire not only the new owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Legend34.14m (112'0&quot;)Alloy Yachts1999">Legend</a>, but other owners to traverse around the world. Enrico Chhibber speaks with Japan-based yachting experts to explore recent regulatory reforms and infrastructure developments that are gradually positioning Japan as a more accessible and appealing destination for superyachts. When it comes to attractive superyacht destinations in Asia, Thailand has traditionally taken the spotlight. Japan, meanwhile, has remained a lesser-known cruising ground and has often been viewed as logistically challenging. Today, however, that narrative is changing, as Japan begins to reposition itself on the global yachting map. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370701/image/large-fccdf0ce93277bda47184d5f87855515.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370701">The Japanese archipelago, comprising more than 14,000 islands and stretching over 34,000 kilometres of coastline, spans approximately 3,000 kilometres from north to south. With climates ranging from the snowy winters of Hokkaido to the subtropical warmth of Okinawa, the country offers year-round cruising opportunities and a broad range of geographical and cultural experiences.Yet despite these natural advantages, Japan has not historically appealed to the international superyacht community. Regulatory complexities and limited marina infrastructure for larger vessels have, until recently, presented notable hurdles to its development as a cruising destination. This landscape is now beginning to evolve. Since 2021, a series of regulatory reforms have made it easier for privately registered, foreign-flagged yachts to enter and cruise Japanese waters.Further momentum followed in December 2024 with the announcement of Superyacht Base Kobe Marina, which is currently under construction, with a full yacht service opening in 2026 and a full opening with surrounding infrastructure taking place in 2027. The project is intended to help address longstanding infrastructural limitations and support Japan’s efforts to attract more superyacht tourism.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370696/image/large-5ef3ac54fac761e21641b06208086062.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370696"> Marina infrastructure development in JapanAlthough Japan’s general maritime infrastructure is well developed, facilities specifically designed for superyachts remain limited. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Person/935" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nigel Beatty, United Kingdom (Person)">Nigel Beatty,</a> yacht broker at YACHTZOO and Chairman of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7320" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association (Company)">Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association</a>, observed that while the country is well-equipped overall, it lacks dedicated infrastructure tailored to the operational needs of larger yachts. “Infrastructure is brilliant in Japan, but if you're talking about purely superyacht infrastructure, then we are lacking a little bit,” he said.In most cases, visiting yachts cruise along the coast, anchoring near beaches or making brief stops at town piers. According to Beatty, this pattern highlights the need for more structured superyacht hubs and ports where large yachts can access services such as mooring, refuelling, provisioning, and guest handling. “When you go cruising, you anchor or tie up at a town pier for a night, then move on,” he explained. “But you also need hubs, places where yachts can come in and operate with proper support.”Some capacity does exist. A marina in Fukuoka, for example, can currently host a small number of larger vessels. However, the most significant development is taking place in Kobe, where a new marina is under construction. Announced in late 2024, Superyacht Base Kobe Marina is being developed to accommodate yachts up to 80-metres in length for stern to dockage and any size for alongside dockage. Just in the last few weeks the facility has accommodated a 70-metre and a 117-metre. Beatty noted that the basin is roughly half the size of Port Hercule in Monaco.Yukio Shintani of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1132" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creation Marine (Company)">Creation Marine</a>, a lead investor who has played a role in coordinating stakeholders for the Kobe project, confirmed the marina is being established as a destination facility and is expected to open within two years. Once complete, it will serve as one of the first ports in Japan specifically designed to support visiting superyachts at scale.While Japan does not yet offer the density of dedicated infrastructure found in more established superyacht destinations, ongoing developments suggest a gradual shift toward greater accessibility and operational support.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/104219/image/large-c94403a78cad4fa52830c3e4d2898030.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/104219"> Before the Change: Superyacht regulations in Japan prior to 2021 Although foreign-flagged superyachts were technically permitted to enter and cruise in Japan before 2021, a combination of bureaucratic complexity and limited facilities made the country a difficult destination to navigate. As Nigel Beatty noted, “Whether commercially or privately registered, Japan never really drew a strong distinction between yacht types. Superyachts have technically been able to visit Japan for quite some time. The issue was the bureaucracy involved. While we used to manage it, the process was labour-intensive, and that translated into high costs for visiting yachts.”Japan did offer a relative advantage for crew from visa waiver countries. “There have always been positive aspects to cruising in Japan,” Beatty added. “For example, if you were from a visa waiver country, such as those in Europe or North America, you could enter Japan by yacht and remain for up to 90 days as a tourist, even as crew.”However, crew from non-waiver countries such as South Africa, India, and the Philippines, who represent a significant portion of the global yachting workforce, faced more complications. These individuals were required either to obtain a visa in advance or rely on a short-term crew pass valid for just 14 days. “Renewing it involved leaving the country and re-applying at an immigration office,” Beatty said. “Approval often depended on the discretion of the local immigration office, which made the process inconsistent and inefficient.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Person/4301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kenta Inaba, Japan (Person)"></a><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Person/4301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kenta Inaba, Japan (Person)">Kenta Inaba</a>, President and Partner at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6572" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Super Yacht Logistics Japan (Company)">Super Yacht Logistics</a>, described how procedural rigidity once defined the experience for visiting yachts. “In the past, every time a yacht entered Japan, we had to process customs, immigration and quarantine, not just on arrival but again at each subsequent port,” he explained. “When I started in this business, I had to submit a full list of every port the yacht was planning to visit. But yachts don’t follow fixed routes like commercial vessels. Their movements are often dictated by weather and anchorage conditions, which makes rigid planning difficult.”Even minor navigational changes could create problems. “If a yacht was anchored and the wind shifted, they might need to move to another part of the bay. But if that area wasn’t listed in the original plan, it became an issue,” Inaba said. “Even bringing something as simple as a bottle of beer back onboard required paperwork.” The system, he added, was not designed with yachts in mind. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/298475/image/large-124d7d95e2299e38d8fd95f9b6b90929.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/298475">Turning Point: The 2021 regulatory reformsRegulatory changes introduced in 2021 significantly altered how Japan manages visiting superyachts. Previously constrained by complex procedures, foreign-flagged vessels now benefit from a more streamlined regulatory environment. “Much of that red tape has now been removed,” Beatty said.One of the most significant adjustments was the introduction of the Naikosen (similar to a cruising permit). After completing initial customs, immigration and quarantine procedures, yachts can apply for the permit, which, along with a blanket Closed Port Permit, removes the requirement to file repeated clearances at each domestic port. “Yachts used to be required to declare every intended stop in advance, which was completely impractical,” Inaba said. “Now, they have the flexibility to change course depending on conditions.”One of the more favourable regulations that was always in place in Japan is that foreign registered vessels remain indefinitely in Japan allowing for longer and more adaptable cruising schedules and possibly basing themselves in the country long term. Changes to crew entry procedures have addressed previous constraints. The introduction of the Multiple Landing Permit, or “Crew Pass,” allows foreign crew to remain in Japan for the duration of the yacht’s stay; and even up to one year. This replaces the former 14-day restriction that often-required multiple renewals and placed a disproportionate burden on those from non-waiver countries. The Crew Pass allows crew ashore in the local areas that the yacht will be for yacht business, shopping or sightseeing.Crew from countries covered by Japan’s visa waiver programme continue to benefit from 90-day tourist access, allowing for greater flexibility to travel ashore or explore the length while the vessel is in port.Together, these updates have reduced many of the operational constraints that previously discouraged superyacht visits. Japan is now better aligned with international practices and more accessible to a global yachting audience; and in some areas have more favourable regulations than well-established yachting countrie<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/298430/image/large-ae231a89fb0e19e109ca66eda85be1ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/298430">Looking AheadJapan’s regulatory progress in recent years has laid important groundwork, but further improvements will be necessary to support charter activity. In particular, foreign-flagged, commercially registered yachts still face regulatory hurdles when seeking to operate charters in Japanese waters. Shintani acknowledged this ongoing challenge. “I want to try to create everything for the foreign-flagged yacht to charter. This is our mission.”While Japanese-flagged yachts can operate commercially, the charter process for foreign-flagged vessels remains undecided, however moves are afoot to make a rule for foreign charter yachts with a charter contract already developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3581" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hill Dickinson Llp (Company)">Hill Dickinson</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7320" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association (Company)">Asia Pacific Superyacht Association</a>, which navigates specific Japanese regulations. A new chapter for Asia: Japan’s rise as a cruising destination

Japan is emerging as Asia’s newest superyacht destination, driven by regulatory reform and new marina infrastructure including Superyacht Base Kobe. 

A new streamlined administrative process has been launched to allow foreign yachts to sail freely between Abu Dhabi and Dubai from January 2026. The new protocol is designed to streamline yacht movement and elevate the UAE’s yachting experience. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/381143/image/large-5a93b42afa19898a8603a00bee753194.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/381143">The streamlined system removes duplicate clearance procedures, allowing foreign-flagged yachts to move between the two emirates with a single recognised sailing permit. For the first time, sailing permits issued by either Abu Dhabi or Dubai will be honoured across both emirates, eliminating the need for repeated approvals or local entry and exit processing, which will reduce waiting times, documentation requests, and administrative costs as a mutually recognised permit issued by either emirate will grant seamless passage between the two cruising hubs.Central to the change is a new digital information bridge powered by the Early Inquiry System. Building on its growth as a global yachting hub, Dubai is adopting a more strategic and business-oriented approach to developing its maritime sector as part of its wider economic objectives. Through regulatory reform, targeted infrastructure investment and large-scale environmental initiatives, the city sees yachting not only as a lifestyle draw, but also as a catalyst for long-term business growth, innovation and inward investment.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/371503/image/large-62250e7ac28e232f2c5e8db6051ee892.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/371503">Positioning Dubai for investmentDubai’s transformation from a modest trading port to a global hub for trade, tourism and maritime activity reflects its success in combining clear policy direction with strong public-private collaboration.&nbsp;Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit in May 2025, Issam Kazim, CEO of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6865" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dubai Tourism (Company)">Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM)</a>, part of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), explained how the city has &nbsp;focused on building its infrastructure and attracting tourists from around the world. He detailed how the implementation of its diversification strategy had helped Dubai open the market quickly in the post-Covid era. More importantly, Dubai has become not just a repeat destination for many, it is now becoming home for people relocating family offices and headquarters.At the core of this proposition are Dubai’s favourable business climate and coordinated approach to development. In 2024, the emirate ranked as the world’s leading destination for Greenfield foreign direct investment (FDI) for the fourth consecutive year, according to Financial Times Ltd.’s fDi Markets, attracting 52.3 billion dirhams ($14.25 billion) in estimated FDI capital alone. This momentum aligns with the long-term goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, which aims to double the size of Dubai’s economy by 2033 and further consolidate its position as a leading global destination for business and leisure.Close cooperation between government and industry has been key to this progress. Regular consultation ensures infrastructure, regulations and sustainability measures align with investor expectations. As Kazim noted, truly understanding the industry and maintaining strong private-public sector partnerships have been “the backbone of Dubai’s success and will continue to be so going forward”.Public investment in major assets, such as the expansion of Nakheel Marinas and the redevelopment of Mina Rashid, is matched by private sector services ranging from maintenance and refit to technical support.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/371506/image/large-e25bec56d4382b9c999e4cae8b373e50.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/371506">Dubai’s appeal for yacht owners and marine businesses is also shaped by ease of access and strong connectivity. Flagship airlines and private aviation links connect the city to major markets, an advantage for high-net-worth individuals in Asia. With more than 5,000 berths across 22 marinas, Dubai offers capacity and technical services that rival long-established yachting centres. Kazim noted that this growth is clear in the increasing number of yachts and superyachts relocating to Dubai, if not permanently then for part of the year, to benefit from Dubai’s winter climate and supporting infrastructure.Visa policies and streamlined regulations further strengthen Dubai’s competitive position. Programmes such as the Golden Visa, multi-entry visas and simplified superyacht registration make it easier for owners and operators to establish a long-term base. Foreign-flagged yachts are exempt from VAT and customs duties under certain permits, while the proposed GCC Unified Visa could expand regional cruising opportunities.Complementing its business environment is a diverse destination offering. Luxury hotels, fine dining, cultural attractions and outdoor activities add to Dubai’s appeal for owners and family offices. A record 18.72 million international visitors in 2024, up nine per cent year-on-year, underlines Dubai’s position as a resilient tourism leader and an increasingly credible base for maritime investment and wealth.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/371505/image/large-c6d0508d08cf93d811d8059f0c1a106c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/371505">Dock &amp; Dine: Linking yachting and waterfront hospitalityAs part of wider efforts to encourage short-stay yachting and strengthen Dubai’s role as a maritime hub, the city has introduced the Dock &amp; Dine initiative. Developed by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) in collaboration with the Dubai Maritime Authority (DMA), the programme spans 20 marinas and marina stations across the city. It is described as the region’s most extensive marina dining concept and supports the objectives of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33.Designed for yacht owners, crews and guests seeking short-term berthing, Dock &amp; Dine provides convenient access to a curated selection of restaurants, luxury hotels, cultural attractions and waterfront entertainment. Visitors can sail easily between different docks and dining venues, enjoying a diverse range of cuisines within a 45-minute to one-hour cruising radius.Key features include complimentary moorage at participating marinas, quick booking response times, direct coordination with restaurants for reservations, and dedicated dock tenders for smooth drop-offs and pick-ups. A unified regulatory framework ensures a consistent, straightforward experience across the city’s marinas.By harmonising marina regulations and enhancing operational processes, the city is making it easier for foreign-flagged vessels to arrive and ensuring guests enjoy streamlined access and world-class service.Making waterfront dining more accessible, the initiative supports Dubai’s appeal as a year-round destination, especially during the peak winter season when favourable weather and a vibrant events calendar attract a growing number of international visitors. Spanning 600 square kilometres of Dubai’s waters, the multi-faceted sustainability initiative is designed to enhance biodiversity, increase ecosystem resilience, and strengthen socio-economic prosperity and eco-tourism through its three main pillars: Marine Habitat Restoration, Marine Life Rehabilitation, and Marine Conservation Research.The first pillar, the Marine Habitat Restoration programme, will see a total of 20,000 purpose-built reef modules of various sizes and shapes deployed across the project area by 2027. The reef modules will help restore marine habitat, boost fish populations, and increase ecosystem resilience. Pillar two, Marine Life Rehabilitation, supports the growth of indigenous marine species and will focus on coral restoration in its pilot phase. Over three centuries ago, Maurepas, a French frigate sent by King Louis XIV, sank off the coast of Panama. Its location has remained a secret, closely guarded by the indigenous Guna Yala people of the San Blas islands. No explorer has been allowed to search the sacred waters. The water surrounding the islands is considered sacred by the Guna people, making it impossible to legally search for the lost treasure. Now, the Guna Yala have decided to share this secret with the DBE-team.To understand why, we have to travel back to 2011 and 10,000 kilometres East. The Ocean X team discovered what is now known as the ‘Baltic Sea Anomaly’, a strange object sitting at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. To this day, no one knows exactly what it is or why it's there. That is, no one besides the Guna Yala. Although its thousands of kilometres away, the Guna Yala believe that the 'Baltic Sea Anomaly' is the interstellar vessel in which their ancestors descended from space. In 2012, a legal representative of the Guna Yala contacted Ocean X to get in touch about not just the anomaly, but also to explore the lost treasure of Maurepas.Besides the hindrance of the pandemic, the long timeline highlights how careful the Guna Yala people are in sharing the details of the lost treasure. The UK's tax authority, HM Revenue &amp; Customs (HMRC), has issued new guidance clarifying how fuel supplied to superyachts should be treated for duty purposes.Issued June 2026, the guidance does not introduce new legislation, but instead reinforces HMRC’s position that most superyachts, including many operating in the charter market, should be regarded as private pleasure craft, rather than commercial vessels when purchasing fuel in the UK.SuperYacht Times breaks down exactly what this new guidance means for superyacht fuel supply in the UK. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/375442/image/large-54e7aee42496cdefed23d149da2e9f5e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/375442">What has HMRC said?The new guidance provides fuel suppliers with greater clarity on how to determine whether a vessel qualifies as a private pleasure craft (PPC), or a commercial vessel. According to HMRC, a vessel is considered a private pleasure craft when it is used for private or recreational purposes by its owner, charterer or any guests permitted to use it. This includes leisure cruising, holidays and private charters undertaken for recreational purposes.The guidance emphasises that a yacht's ownership structure, commercial registration status or crew arrangements do not automatically make it a commercial vessel for fuel-duty purposes.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/395931/image/large-1b97bd788627c1a902a84bcaf7f1e970.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/395931">Why are superyachts specifically mentioned?HMRC explains that although many superyachts and support vessels are commercially owned and available for charter, this alone does not mean they should be treated as commercial vessels when fuel is supplied.A superyacht should be considered a PPC if either the owner or charterer determines how the vessel is used and enjoys it for their own or guests’ leisure purposes. This applies even when a yacht is professionally crewed or operating under a charter arrangement.Therefore superyachts and support vessels should only be considered commercial in exceptional circumstances, such as when they are contracted by a government authority or industrial customer to supply non-recreational services. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/378222/image/large-9dabe457a6a0c831b4f7d237793820d3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/378222">Why does this matter for superyachts?The distinction between a private pleasure craft and a commercial vessel is important because different fuel-duty treatments apply. There are two types of fuel in the UK relating to superyachts are white diesel and red diesel.&nbsp;White diesel is the standard diesel which is sold at the full rate of fuel duty. This means that VAT is applied at standard rates and no relief is available. White diesel is often used for road transport and any fuel use that does not qualify for a rebate.&nbsp;Red diesel is the same standard diesel, but it has been dyed red to indicate that it should be sold at a reduced rate of fuel duty. This is often referred to as “marked gas oil” and is intended for specific exempt or lower tax purposes such as, non-propulsion use on vessels like generators or heating, or for some agricultural, construction and industrial application on land.PPC’s are not eligible to receive red diesel duty-free under Marine Voyages Relief, or to use it for propulsion at the lower, rebated duty rate. Under the new HMRC guidance, superyachts and support vessels should be considered as PPC’s.&nbsp;However, HMRC has also stated that you can supply red diesel to a PPC in Great Britain, but the customer must declare the split between propulsion and non-propulsion use and the full rate of VAT applies to all red diesel supplies of 2,300 litres or more. The fuel supplier is also responsible for paying the additional amount due for propulsion. This leads to a 46.47 pence per litre difference in duty to be paid to HMRC on fuel for PPC propulsion.While the exact financial impact will vary depending on a yacht's fuel consumption and operating profile, the amount could be significantly higher for larger vessels. For example, a superyacht taking on 50,000 litres of propulsion fuel could face an additional duty liability of approximately £23,235. For a vessel bunkering 100,000 litres, that figure rises to around £46,470 before VAT is applied.As a result, the classification of a vessel can have a significant impact on the total cost of fuel purchased in the UK, particularly for larger superyachts taking on substantial quantities of fuel.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/377386/image/large-be7ad0f93133f1194f69440d38ecd477.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/377386">What should owners and operators take away from the guidance?The guidance does not create new legislation, but it does provide a clearer indication of how HMRC expects fuel suppliers to assess superyachts and their support vessels.For owners, charterers, yacht managers and fuel suppliers, the document reinforces the importance of understanding how a vessel's use, rather than its ownership structure or registration status, may affect its fuel-duty treatment when operating in the UK.You must first confirm if the vessel is a PPC or is operating commercially, but pleasure vessels such as superyachts should be treated at PPC’s, unless clear evidence of commercial use is provided.&nbsp;A declaration between propulsion and non-propulsion use should be obtained and the additional duty for propulsion should be paid to HMRC.
