The team behind <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10627" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Special One52.0m (170'7&quot;)Royal Huisman2024">Special One</a>, the world's largest sportfisher built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>, have just unveiled that the superyacht has been hiding a significant innovation; she has been designed to run on the fossil-free fuel, HVO100. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/314893/image/large-707de4b535f7f7a651f91755f918dd81.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/314893">From the very beginning of the project, the owners in collaboration with Dutch design studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a>, who are responsible for exterior, interior and naval architecture, have worked with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1441" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MAN (Company)">MAN</a> to ensure that the yacht could run in the most sustainable way possible.“We applied our most radical naval architecture ever on this hull, resulting in dramatic lower resistance and, consequently, reduced fuel consumption.” says Bart Bouwhuis, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> co-creative director. “However we were also very aware that no matter what, the twin V20 MAN 4500kW drive train, which propels this yacht &nbsp;to over 32 knots and her twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4758" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zenoro (Company)">Zenoro</a> 180 kW generators will always burn a substantial amount of fuel. It is produced from food industry waste and left overs and, is 100 percent renewable and traceable from well to wake. “With such a significant reduction in harmful emissions, &nbsp;it also means that engine components, such as filters and injectors, stay cleaner and require less maintenance.”“As a team, we wanted to go beyond just scratching the surface. Collaboration, dialogue, and, most importantly, action is what is required today. The &nbsp;carbon-neutral system can generate up to 100kW of electricity. This allows the vessel to operate its propulsion engines and diesel generator inactively, thus significantly extending the duration it can spend at anchor without relying on diesel fuel.The second major development has come from another <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2024">Monaco Yacht Show</a> exhibitor, the Dutch shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, which launched the 118.8-metre Feadship 821 earlier this year. Project 821 distinguishes itself as the first ever superyacht powered entirely by hydrogen, aligning with Feadship's commitment to developing "net zero" yachts by 2030. To achieve this, the company has heavily invested in adapting the required technology to the spatial constraints of a superyacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310514/image/large-7928e6e601c8c856e4d7a763693038b3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310514">According to the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI), approximately 70-78% of a yacht’s annual energy consumption is attributed to its hotel load, with heating and air conditioning as the primary energy consumers. The project's contributions to hydrogenation, routing, and sail-related technologies will be shared openly with the aim of accelerating innovation across the industry. It creates an effect of expanded onboard spaces that communicate with each other with minimal steps. This generates a naturalness in movement onboard, continually revealing new perspectives of the surrounding waters. Incredibly, the redistribution of interior spaces has no impact on the yacht’s exterior design, which remains sleek and elegant. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321817/image/large-64190d04e9019af259cc3088cdf4f831.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321817">The DecksFrom the aft, the superyacht’s guests are welcomed by the Ocean Lounge, which features three terraces, opening when at anchor to create a 135 square-metre beach on the water. This huge deck is home to a large swimming pool, to the aft of which is the swim platform, giving guests the closest possible connection to the ocean.&nbsp;This impressive terrace leads through to a large full-beam saloon called the Beach House, with steps leading up to the dining area. The stairs connecting the internal spaces are flanked in glass, allowing light to flood from the large floor to ceiling windows, throughout the decks. This feature also helps to connect the unique areas, such as the gym and spa on the lower deck, to the second saloon on the main deck.In addition to the Beach House and spa area, the lower deck is home to two VIP and two double staterooms, which can be configured as either doubles or singles, both with Pullman beds. The entire lower deck, both in the lounge and stateroom areas, is characterised by a uniform colour palette &nbsp;and material consistency, with dark wood for ceilings and panelling contrasting with the light-coloured flooring. However, in the sleeping area, the vertical cladding is treated with light wood to enhance the light coming through the vertical portholes.From the lower deck, guests are led up the stairs to the main onboard living areas, with the saloon and dining room. Like the Beach House, the main deck saloon is surrounded by ocean views, with glass doors leading out to the aft deck, enhancing the connection to the yacht’s environment. Looking to the fore from the main saloon, the view through the yacht meets the dining room, located on the lower level on the main deck. The dining area is exceptionally designed, with a 3.7 metre ceiling height and visual perspectives to both the Beach House on the deck below, and the main deck saloon, out to the sea beyond.&nbsp;The main deck is also home to the full-beam owner’s suite, which has been decorated in a unique aesthetic with Japanese-style screens, dark wood walls and wallpaper. The master suite features two dressing rooms at its entrance, as well as a large ensuite bathroom. To the fore of the master suite is the yacht’s garage, housing a 7-metre tender, two jet skis, and the water toys. In this section of the deck, the Fuel Cells, the innovative technology powering the yacht’s hotel services with green energy, are also housed.The upper deck, which is accessed via an internal staircase, is home to both the yacht’s wheelhouse and a spacious deck to aft with an al fresco dining area and lounge. This deck has been designed with glass windbreak panels, which will allow the deck to be closed off in cooler climates, allowing guests to enjoy the outside no matter the weather.&nbsp;The final space aboard the yacht is the sun deck, featuring 360-degree panoramic views. Design studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6603" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="STURGE & TOTH (Company)">Sturge &amp; Toth</a> has shared the details of a new 52-metre superyacht concept, the Gladius 52 Crossover Performance yacht. The full reveal of the design will be showcased at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2024">Monaco Yacht Show</a> in Port Hercule this week.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/329161/image/large-3c94413ea8e36b015f5a4eda8ba6fca9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/329161">“We’ve drawn inspiration from &nbsp;automotive design philosophies and engaged in extensive discussions with naval architects to push boundaries while ensuring a highly functional vessel, with top ocean-going capabilities and maximum safety onboard,” explained Ben Julian Toth, head of exterior design at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6603" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="STURGE & TOTH (Company)">Sturge &amp; Toth</a>.&nbsp;With a beam of 8.7-metres and a volume of 499 GT, the yacht is capable of hosting as many as 12 guests across her four VIP staterooms with Pullman berths and master suite. With versatility at the forefront of her design, the Gladius 52 yacht offers a variety of configurations within her adaptable interior layout.&nbsp;Furthermore, Gladius 52 is composed of a full displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure. Aesthetically, the Gladius 52 is defined by her harmonious collection of curves, sculpted surfaces, and balanced proportions, along with her exploration-oriented traits. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/329162/image/large-b54637ea3a9ce46b3db1e46abeb0fb86.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/329162">She features an alfresco sky lounge located on her bridge deck, which allows for access to the sundeck above, where a bar, Jacuzzi, dining and lounge area provide further outdoor entertainment.Additionally, an extra level leads guests to the eagle’s nest situated near the yacht’s mast, and contains a sunbed with panoramic views 11-metres above sea level. Meanwhile, Gladius 52’s main deck boasts an aft exterior lounge or alternatively, a storage space for tenders and toys, slightly elevated from a saloon with flush-deck glazing.&nbsp;The main deck also offers a spacious master suite with forward views through the forward open hideout area, which is decked out in a stargazing snug, raised ceiling height, a Jacuzzi, a skylight, a sideway dive board, and a breakfast area. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/329160/image/large-5bc91b5a2935ed6a1b10045cf8316262.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/329160">Moreover, the yacht’s platform allows for a touch-and-go helipad, roomy storage for tenders and toys, as well as a multi-purpose interior arrangement. Gladius 52’s transom extends to the exterior deck areas, fitted with a three-metre swim platform, and a shaded outdoor beach club featuring a wet bar, sauna, gym, and large fold-down balconies.“The yacht’s bow exudes power and grace, while the overall design focuses on efficiently balancing sharp contours, playful reflections, and a highly practical layout. This synergy of protective areas and panoramic inside-outside living spaces significantly enhances the overall onboard experience,” Toth added.&nbsp;Regarding her performance, the Gladius 52 has a speed of 16 knots, and when cruising at a speed of 10 knots, she has a range of 5,800 nautical miles. She is also equipped with stabilisers for a smooth journey onboard.&nbsp;
