A lot of people are always very surprised when I can recognise a superyacht from a distance or name superyachts in the marina and tell a story about each of them. Of course, this is not something that comes overnight. I didn’t grow up in the South of France amongst the superyachts and the internet was only in it’s very early stages with websites on superyachts being none existent.
More than 20 years ago, as a young and passionate yacht enthusiast, I started buying yachting magazines and most of them had a lot of brokerage listings in the back. Every evening I was going through the listings and tried to memorise the information on the yachts. The most exciting issues where the ones with the Top 100, it would feature rare photos of the world’s largest yachts.
Back in the day, it could take years to find a new photo of a superyacht, if you were fortunate to find a photo at all. My passion for superyachts and collecting information on them prompted me to create my own superyacht database more than 15 years ago. But just as important I started a digital archive of pictures of all the superyachts, which allowed me to identify the yachts and to learn more about them.
With a database of more than 6,000 superyachts and over 250,000 photos in stock, I am now pleased to say that we have launched our own knowledge and intelligence division, SuperYacht iQ. Our diverse iQ team consists of the incredible yacht historian Malcolm Wood, the talented photographer Tom van Oossanen, former crew member turned journalist Charl van Rooy and me heading the team. With all the different specialities in our team, I am convinced that we provide the best market intelligence there is available today.
As a testimony to our knowledge, I am proud to say that we are the official superyacht data & intelligence media partner of the Monaco Yacht Show and provide the Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) with market intelligence.
