Dutch shipyard Royal Van Lent very recently launched their fifth F45, the stunning and sophisticated Helix. Just shy of 45 metres LOA, this Feadship was designed by De Voogt Naval Architects and Sinot Yacht Design and shows an extraordinarily high level of finish combined with the finest technologies. This is obviously what we have come to expect from any addition to the Feadship fleet. With such an enticing pedigree, curiosity is obviously sparked as to find out what Helix is all about. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137378/image/large-db2f67bab083a39cc7acd0d7ac84426d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137378">Helix made her public debut at this years Monaco Yacht Show, showing off many of her unique features, one of which is a lay-out that places all cabins on the main deck, assuring gorgeous views for all guests on board from the large windows that make up a recognizable element in her hull design. Her exterior is based upon clean lines, sportive and contemporary yet sleek and highly elegant. Helix is not about being flashy or in-your-face, but all the more about visually pleasing the superyacht connoisseur; she stands out by being her confident self. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137379/image/large-07d984b7dff58b1e502d0942dbf27eb9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137379"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137380/image/large-9fa5ca27359ca8d2771aa4e5a8d4636c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137380">By setting a challenge like redesigning the commonly known layout structure, one inevitably makes a decision to try and set new standards or at least show a different perspective. In Helix' case, with all guest cabins located on the main deck, the first logical result is that guests will not be using the lower deck at all. This solves the problem of separating crew and guest areas rather quickly, with the main deck pantry giving access to the lower deck. With a total of five staterooms plus a convertible private office, Helix facilitates a company of up to twelve guests. Including the owner's cabin, three doubles and three twins can be found onboard. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137381/image/large-24f043164f32cdca8b75179a4b18fd9a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137381">A second notably intelligent aspect of the vessel's design, has to do with the classification of Helix as being under 500 gross tonnage. This is the result of the upper deck saloon being designed in such a manner that this entire area is classified as outside space, mainly because of glass doors on three sides being able to fully open. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137382/image/large-f1812cb81cfd9edcf33794bbb45f1dc6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137382">As for her interior design, Helix sports a more warm and intimate look that nicely compliments her exterior design. Also without any excess in abundance but rather with exceptionally high levels of finish and attention to detail, her interior sports an atmosphere that is cozy, warm, contemporary and clean. What instantly comes to mind when boarding this superyacht, is that there are seemingly no fixed furnishings on her outside deck areas. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137383/image/large-391c266226fcd08542c3b76f37b012f6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137383"> <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137384/image/large-e870422f7416438d8bd64ba8160bef61.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137384">The main and upper aft decks for instance, both show loose furniture that greatly increase the multi-purpose usage of these areas and increases a pleasant sense of luxurious homeliness. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137385/image/large-cff29db3b388ad7aa21329e862212a5b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137385">The interiors are based on a palette of white and off-whites, combined with warm dark brown tints. Overall, the atmosphere onboard has a pleasantly gentle feel to it, a sense of nurturing in a sophisticatedly calm style. Aside from the balanced colour palette and a variety of high quality materials (that have notably been applied in an elegant and delicate manner), luxurious amounts of natural light are a main ingredient for Helix. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137386/image/large-aeffbe9d9b0fb524c59c01ebdebf6e73.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137386">Exemplary for this is the full beam Owner's stateroom, located on the fore main deck, that had light flowing in through the side windows and a massive skylight covering considerable parts of the (lusciously high) bed- and bathroom ceilings. All this gives the Owner's quarters a feeling of refined grandness. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/137387/image/large-7337ad2dbaea241d4011f99e77a721a0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/137387">Because of the aforementioned main deck location of all guest cabins, ample amounts of daylight are basic ingredients for each of these rooms, perfectly framing the warm and intimate design that can be found, in various degrees, in all areas onboard. Measuring 67.85 metres, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a> was responsible for her design this time in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, marking a departure from the French shipyard Horten had previously favoured for his Carinthias. SYT found out more. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262239/image/large-028247e85db04278e4d7d6c2adfec517.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262239">With a legacy of brokerage in your family, was it always your plan to become a broker?I was born and raised in the midst of the yachting industry, and of course it came to my mind from a young age that I might work in the industry as well. My grandfather started selling yachts in the 1970s and there was also a boat building business within the family, so yachting is truly part of my family heritage. When the time came for me to start my first business however, I decided to break from the family tradition and I founded a company within the real estate industry. I think it was partly a youthful rebellion – I was only 23 – but I quickly realised that I’d made a mistake not following my passion for the yachting industry.I had been an active and competitive sailor from the age of eight, racing every week, and of course having grown up within my family, yachting was truly where my heart lay. So I &nbsp;decided to pivot the concept I’d created within the real estate industry, and do something similar within yachting. The business became <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters</a>; the first AirBnB for boats. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/69988/image/large-e5de394c61cf3a6b29fbcc9408e9bf14.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/69988">So how did an AirBnB for boats transform into a superyacht charter brokerage house?In 2015 we launched the platform and were the first in the world to do so. There were some other early adopters but we grew very quickly, operating in 63 countries with 12,000 boats available for rent. It was a successful beginning but we quickly realised that in order to become a truly profitable business, we would need a huge operational network. Boats are nothing like houses; they need work, maintenance and expansive shoreside support.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/50182/image/large-00c42362b1bed144ada7b119cd9afc4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50182">Why do you think that the company has done so well – how do you stand out from the crowd?At the same time as I was having these thoughts, clients from Lengers were generating leads and asking questions about Boatsters and enquiring if I could assist them with yacht charter. From these leads came a very organic transition into <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a>, where we began to work with crewed yachts above 20-metres. Not long after this transition, we took Boatsters offline and I focused my energies on the development of the superyacht charter business. Since that decision we’ve opened international offices, are managing some very exciting yachts and expect to double our fleet in 2023. The company is positive and profitable and with the direction we’re currently going, we will be one of the top players in the charter industry within a few years.&nbsp;I believe that our approach is what makes us stand out. We are a boutique charter company, and we don't have aspirations to be the biggest, we want to provide the best service to a limited number of clients. We have regular contact with owners, we offer a personal concierge service for onshore support, we are incredibly active and make our clients really feel how much we value them. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216778/image/large-e3b74dc8cf7cf04994e4b19dd6e7c678.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216778">What has it been like breaking into an industry that has been dominated by long standing and large companies, such as&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a>?When we set out we knew it would be like David and Goliath, but I have always enjoyed a challenge. My aspiration when we set out was to establish <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> as the industry’s first Dutch charter house, just as my grandfather was the first Dutch broker. I am happy to say we’ve achieved that goal and now we are looking to the next challenge.&nbsp;The yachting industry has an obsession with being the biggest, with companies claiming ‘the biggest charter fleet’ or the most charters completed, but what does that actually mean for the client? Very likely it means an impersonal approach, with yachts being managed by a conglomerate rather than a person &nbsp;– we do not aspire to become that kind of business!&nbsp;What are your plans for the future for the business?The next stage is expansion. We’ve built a base from which the company can grow exponentially and my attention first will be to make sure that our services are the best they can be. We aren’t going to be accepting any and all boats to the fleet, but really making sure that the yacht is able to offer clients the best services, with a stable crew and good knowledge base.&nbsp;In 2022 we had a revenue of over €12 million and with an expansion into the full spectrum of services including crewing and management, I expect that to see a stable increase this year. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216755/image/large-6c1f9a59bba24e5170d83edfc3039cf0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216755">Finally, what advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?Firstly, focus on an aspect of this industry and be the best at that aspect. There are so many generalists within yachting and what there needs to be is more specialists. Building the first Dutch superyacht charter brokerage: Nick Gelevert of Boatsters Black

Built in 2010 by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1732" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Freire Shipyard (Company)">Freire Shipyard</a>, she started life as Volstad Surveyor and spent two years – between 2018 and 2020 – being transformed into a sophisticated research vessel by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (Company)">Damen Shiprepair &amp; Conversion</a>. She is now the world’s most advanced research vessel.“The ship <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="OceanXplorer 187.1m (285'9&quot;)Freire Shipyard2010">OceanXplorer 1</a> will take ocean explorers to never-before-seen undersea worlds and allow them to beam back what they encounter via social media, digital experiences, and a TV show,” Ray Dalio, co-Founder of OceanX and President of Dalio Philanthropies, previously sald. This is made possible thanks to the vessel’s two custom <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton</a> manned submarines, which are capabile to dive over 1,000 metres. She also features an ROV and Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) that can be operated at 6,000 metres below sea level. She has four suites on the lower deck, which can easily be converted into two family rooms if required. She also has a large tender garage that can stow a 37-foot tender which is launched via a hydraulic “stinger” system.
