SuperYacht of the Week: Philippe Briand's first Perini; P2

On June 14th, the first Perini Navi to be designed by Philippe Briand, P2, a 38m fast sloop, was launched at the Cantieri Navali Beconcini (a Perini Navi Group company) in La Spezia – Italy. The combination of Perini Navi’s philosophy and Briand’s vision has led to this new class of fast sailing yachts for owners who seek high performance allied with Perini Navi’s legendary comfort and unmatched quality.

The designer, Philippe Briand says: ”While designing the new Perini 125’ line we had the image of a high performance gentleman’s yacht in mind. A performance sailing yacht needs to be sensitive in light air and powerful and stiff in heavy winds and that is what we have created. The other characteristics of a special sailing yacht are the elegance of its look and the sensation of performance and acceleration when under sail. If you add to that a refined and comfortable interior, the yacht becomes a real dream”.

The hull is constructed in Sealium, an aluminium alloy which provides greater mechanical strength and improved corrosion characteristics, while reducing weight. In racing trim, S/Y P2 displaces approximately 138tonnes. Twenty nine tonnes of this is in her fin-and-bulb lifting keel whose draft reduces from a maximum of 5.50m to a minimum of 3.50m – ideal for allowing entrance to smaller harbours and shallow anchorages.

Upwind sailing performance is enhanced with 7 tons of salt water ballast. The yacht is rigged with a 50m-tall mast made from hybrid modulus carbon-fibre - a carefully designed blend of standard and high modulus materials - and sets about 734sqm of upwind sail area. The same hybrid modulus material is used for the Park Avenue boom. Huge weight savings have been achieved with the use of PBO for the standing rigging, resulting in a particularly low weight of 310 kg, including its titanium fittings.

To fit a conventional rig with its stainless steel rod would have required a crane, while the PBO was easily fitted using the muscle power of our rigger!

P2 is the first of a line of racing yachts. The project is proposed with 4 possible lay outs. One with 2 guest cabins and an extra large owner suite, or the layout may include 4 guest cabins. In the Perini tradition, the 38m series has a pleasing and comfortable lay-out. While creating her interior the Perini Navi Interior Design Department was inspired by the lightness of the hull and rig and this resulted in a design in which the furniture appears to be weightlessly suspended in the air.

The owner of P2 previously owned a Perini 53 metre yacht and was looking for the following very precise qualities: Speed, acceleration, comfort and superior quality. Philippe Briand chose the 38-metre length because maneuvering remains on a human scale and is also still very swift. Further more 38 meters it is also the maximum length for the use of drum winches (reel winches are available on option).and Manual steering gear enables the helm to receive feedback through the wheel.

The vast cockpit and brightly lit deck-saloon create a welcoming living area. The cockpit can be fully protected with an awning when necessary and can also be converted into a sun bathing area. The deck saloon faces the dual purpose dining/sitting area, where the coffee table can be transformed into a comfortable dining table seating up to 8 guests. To starboard the guests can relax in a corner sofa.

The lower deck can accommodate between 6 and 8 guests. The Owner’s suite, which fills the full beam, is located aft and is adjoined by a private bathroom with a shower, and wardrobe. To port is a comfortable private sitting area. One guest cabin is located to port and can accommodate up to 4 guests with 2 additional pullman berths, while the second which can accommodate 2 guests, or 3 if the additional pullman berth is used, is also located to port just forward, beyond the central engine room. Both have en-suite bathrooms.

One of the yacht’s 2 tenders (Zodiac 3.20m) is stored in a garage sunk into the fore-deck in, while the second (Castoldi 4.80m) is in a spacious lazarette, which opens aft to a swimming platform built into the transom.
