Superyacht of the Week: Sanlorenzo’s stylish SX88

Written by Charl van Rooy

With their sexy new SX88 line of motor yachts, Sanlorenzo has managed to punch a new hole in a market that has been flooded with jam-packed weekender yachts and short-range cruisers. I’m not exactly a big fan of the ‘less is more’ cliché thrown around by marketing experts used to describe an improved or revised product or service, but with this new model Sanlorenzo really have succeeded in delivering a minimalist experience that, when you step on board, leaves you thinking “why has no one ever thought of this before?”. With an exterior that seems as if a rendering just came alive and an interior to match any Upper East Side penthouse, the SX88 is described by Sanlorenzo as a crossover yacht that offers the best of both the luxury living and hands-on adventure worlds. Not exactly a full superyacht but also not quite a day boat, the SX88 delivers space, comfort and practicality all wrapped up in a sleek and edgy Italian package with dynamic exterior lines by Officina Italiana Design. The exterior of this 27-metre motor yacht features a walk-around deck for easy access to the foredeck for guests and efficient port operations for crew. Bulwarks are recessed and align perfectly with those massive single-piece windows of the main saloon that makes the carbon fibre superstructure appear as if it is floating. A high freeboard and negative-angled forward-facing deckhouse window gives the SX88 her distinctive look and sporty demeanour. Sanlorenzo SX88 cruisingPhoto: Tomaso Sartori

The side decks lead you to a welcoming aft cockpit which connects to the sunken beach area via two grand staircases. This entire area is really where Sanlorenzo have outdone themselves and the ability to launch your water toys and tender in a matter of minutes revealing a true family-sized beach deck is a game changer. Forget about the obnoxious deck crane that is left behind once all the toys are launched, the SX88 design team thought of this too and managed to seamlessly incorporate this device in the port side arch at the stern.Sanlorenzo SX88 cruisingPhoto: Tomaso SartoriSanlorenzo SX88 cruising beach clubPhoto: Tomaso Sartori

Inside, the model is designed with two primary layout options depending on the client’s lifestyle. The first two units have been built with the main deck as a single open-plan living area for those tranquil Mediterranean days at anchor. Here guests can experience all the comforts of home in a chic loft-style environment and hang out with friends and family while enjoying near 360-degree views of the surroundings. A central family-style galley combines the lounge and dining area and creates and creates an inviting feeling despite the dark charcoal-themed décor designed by Piero Lissoni.Sanlorenzo SX88 saloonPhoto: Tomaso SartoriSanlorenzo SX88 saloonPhoto: Tomaso Sartori

Clients also have the option to convert the forward part of this deck into a grand master suite during construction if so desired, but in the case of the first two units all accommodation is located on the lower deck.Sanlorenzo SX Layout - Main DeckPhoto: SanlorenzoSanlorenzo SX Layout - Lower DeckPhoto: Sanlorenzo

Access to the flybridge is via a central staircase inside the main saloon. This area is enclosed with a thin strip of wrap-around glass panels which can be lowered to let the fresh summer breeze through when laying at anchor while a retractable canopy above lets in some extra sunlight when needed. In addition to the bridge, an open lounge and two stand-alone sun loungers are all that you will find on this deck. When navigating at night, the crew can completely shut off the bridge to the outside deck with a detachable canvas divider for safety and efficiently control the temperature in the cockpit.Sanlorenzo SX88 flybridgePhoto: Tomaso Sartori

Despite the tight dimensions down in the engine room, Sanlorenzo managed to get a decent top speed out of the SX88 by fitting three smaller 800 hp Volvo IPS engines that deliver 23 knots of boat speed.Sanlorenzo SX88 wheelhousePhoto: Tomaso Sartori
