Superyacht of the Week: The 45 metre superyacht Big Fish

In 2010 McMullen & Wing launched their most recent project, Big Fish, a 45 metre bold and edgy long range expedition superyacht and the biggest new construction vessel for the yard to date. Designed by Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architects design, Big Fish is built to Germanischer Lloyd Classification rules and Marshall Island Flag State rules for commercial vessels.

Big Fish features strong lines and streamlined surfaces which, coupled with her plum bow and expansive foredeck give this vessel a very masculine ‘no-nonsense’ persona.

Significant technical design allows the aft bulwarks to be folded out to combine with the swim platform creating a 46ft wide ‘beach’ around the aft deck. Infused stone replaces traditional teak over much of the deck area, and extendable platforms amidships provide unprecedented floor to ceiling views from inside the dining salon.

While the large sundeck displays obvious opportunities for alfresco dining and sun-bathing, the angular radar mast with control pod seems very much to be the dorsal fin of this Big Fish. The crows nest provides superb sightseeing or navigation advantage within the Pacific island reefs, or more recently Antarctica.

The unfurnished foredeck hides something a little different; hydraulic rams lift the deck vertically to reveal a 27ft aluminium diesel jet tender safely stowed for trans-ocean passage making. This tender provides superb transport to dive sites and for exploration trips while Big Fish is moored at one of her remote anchorages.

Big Fish is a five-stateroom vessel and she carries a crew of 10. She features floor-to-ceiling windows in her large and open salon and dining area, opening bulwarks port and starboard for an infinity view dining experience, and opening port and starboard stern bulwarks that create the widest swim platform of any yacht under 65 meters.

The owner’s cabin is located aft on the bridge deck, offering 360 degree uninterrupted views from the aft facing king sized bed. A private aft deck features sun pads that can be raised or lowered, or be converted into an al-fresco dining area.

With distinctive and unique styling high on the priority list, Big Fish sports a three level atrium and main stairway with a full height video screen.

With a 10,000 mile range at 9-10 knots and extensive long term storage onboard Big Fish is a unique class of vessel capable of sustaining extended trips for up to three months away from refueling facilities. As well as having massive fuel storage capacity, fuel efficiency is a key element of her cruising capability.

Quantified through extensive water-tank testing her hull shape and plum bow make her super-efficient at moving around the ocean and this integral efficiency is complimented by concepts such as reduced power consumption by extensive use of LED lighting throughout the vessel, saving on power generation requirements.
