Northern Star has been delivered in October 2009 and has a length of 75,40 metres. She is designed for extensive and extended cruising in Arctic or tropical waters and allows for a wide range requiring only few stops in ports.
The very experienced owner, who has many years behind him as an ocean racing and cruising sailor, required top notch design and engineering as well as seagoing comfort for his guests and crew.
The owner’s captain, Craig Franks and the team around yacht broker Robert Moran of Moran Yacht and Ship supervised the project and brought in their huge spectrum of experience and consolidated knowledge.
Espen Oeino gave Northern Star a very traditional appearance, reflecting the owner's ideas and she is built to the highest technical standards combined with an abundance of practical and useful features. Capacious outdoor spaces aft, forward and on the sundeck provide ample seating for open air dining or lounging. Her six decks offer her 12 guests enormous space for both entertainment and relaxation.
The interior, designed by Pauline Nunns, can best be described as a grand country home, which is executed in every single detail. The owner's brief called for light airy and comfortable traditional interiors with lots of wall space and good lighting to hang the owner's large art collection and enough of shelf space for books. Nearly the whole of the interior is panelled with raised- and fielded limed oak, either painted in pastel shades to blend with the fabrics or just with a natural finish.
When entering Northern Star through the main entrance into the marble floored hallway you instantly get the feeling of a classic rather than a flashy yacht. The hallway provides a very impressive cylindrical glass elevator which accesses all decks and is encircled by the main staircase.
Aft of the hallway, guests enter the main salon through a lobby with day head. Comfortable couches and chairs in a warm red tone are placed around a real working fireplace. A self-playing Steinway piano offers musical entertainment and an adjacent coffee table opens up to reveal a roulette wheel.
The formal dining area for 14 guests is unusually placed, aft of the salon. The table is made to dismantle completely and can be stowed away so that the open space can be used as party space or dance floor. Parts of the ceiling are recessed where trompe l'oeuil depicting a sky with cherubic characters have been applied in situ by a British artist. The overall feeling in the main salon is a very warm and comfortable one as you really feel at home.
Forward of the hallway two doors lead into the guest area. One leads to an office dedicated to the guests and the second one leads to the guest deck with 5 guest suites as well as to the beauty salon. Two of the five guest cabins are VIPs which have a connecting door and can be turned into a family suite with exceptionally large bathrooms. The other three guest cabins offer one double and two twins which can also be converted into queen-size beds. Another highlight of Northern Star is surely the beauty and massage room which is also on the guest deck.
Most of the upper deck is dedicated to the owner's suite. Forward of the lobby one first gets into the library, a very cosy lounge with red leather couches, a bar and extensive spaces for books. From the library one door leads into a private study and the other one into the bedroom which offers most spectacular panoramic views. Two side doors offer the possibility to walk outside to a cosy seating area. The light blue décor underlines the very light overall look and makes one feel totally comfortable. Adjacent to the bedrooms are two identical bathrooms.
Repeating the layout of the main deck a small lobby with day head leads aft from the main lobby into the skylounge, which is a masterpiece in its own right. The point of focus is a large glass table, hand-crafted by German artist Mary Baumeister that creates the impression of looking down through water into a seascape of pebbles and shells. A Delft-tiled fire place is surrounded by large cosy sofas and chairs, coloured in white and light blue suiting the china and the overhead trompe l'oeuil which is identical to the one in the main salon.
The outside aft deck offers extra large spaces and different areas. On the one hand it is the favourite dining place; an adjacent pantry with food lift takes care for an efficient service flow. Both sides of the deck can be covered with glass panels for wind protection and a heater in the overhead ensures a comfortable dinner also in colder climates or in more chilly weather conditions. On the other hand, this aft deck invites with two large seating areas and a nice bar for relaxation. For sun protection triangular awnings fixed at carbon-fibre poles are laid out in a perfect manner.
In addition to the state-of-the-art wheelhouse, the bridge deck houses a radio room, a captain's office and accommodation as well as a generous owner's gym with an adjacent pool. The outside aft deck is the heli deck. A comfortable feature is that the elevator runs up to this deck.
Aft of the lower deck is the enormous tender garage which hosts two of the three tenders: a 29ft Hinkley and a 10 m Zodiac Hurricane RIB which both can be launched sideways through the hull doors. In addition there is plenty space for any other kind of water sport equipment including a dedicated dive equipment room. A watertight door leads to the aft platform, providing not only a bathing area but also a pick-up point for guests.
The elevator also leads down to the tank deck where guests can enjoy the very comfortable cinema, which is painted in dark mauve, where they can select from over a thousand films. A crew gym is also situated on the tank deck as well as a suitably sized laundry.
The engine room is the heart of the yacht and a masterpiece of German engineering with polished stainless steel applications. Powered by 2 CAT engines of 2.000 kW each, she reaches a top speed of 17 knots and has a range of 7.000 nm. Advanced sound and vibration features guarantee an extremely quiet running of the yacht and zero speed fin-stabilizers are reducing wave generated motions when at anchor.
For low emissions the auxiliary engine exhaust system is equipped with HUG particle filters and soot burners are fully compliant with the IMO air pollution requirements. The system provides excellent fuel efficiency as heat is not generated electrically but directly by burning spare fuel thus demanding less generator capacity.
Northern Star is a yacht built for pleasure, but above all other considerations, she is a yacht intended to be self-sufficient during extended voyages on the high seas and well equipped for whatever she may face.
