Superyacht of the Week: The classic Feadship White Cloud

It’s often interesting to see how superyachts stand the test of time. Not only with regards to the quality of their maintenance but also in the style of their design. As is the case with White Cloud, the 67 metre Feadship built by acclaimed Dutch shipyard in 1983. She has an instantly pleasing charm in her silhouette and elegance in her lines, on the one hand clearly reflecting the aesthetic of a different era, yet on the other hand effortlessly able to stand her ground in today’s market. In short: a superyacht that is still strikingly unique and eloquently stylish.

White Cloud’s history is at least equally intriguing as the context of her design. Formerly known as New Horizon L., she was built for the late Dutch businessman Bram van Leeuwen, also known as the Prince the Lignac. This hospitable owner used to employ her as his main residenence, embarking with her on extended travels at least once every season.

With a team of acclaimed professionals responsible for her design and naval architecture, White Cloud’s story was bound to be a successful one. Legendary creators Jon Bannenberg, Frits de Voogt and Luigi Sturcchio joined forces to create the most wonderful superyacht that had ever existed to date.

At the time, Mr. Bannenberg was well on his way making a remarkable career as a creator of inventive vessels, ahead of his time in setting new standards with regards to superyacht design. With Mr. De Voogt on board as part of this remarkable team, preservation of centuries-old shipbuilding traditions was assured with his extensive experience as a designer of classic vessels. Last but not least, Mr. Sturcchio had just finished a remarkable interior design project on Nabila and was very eager to continue pushing boundaries with regards to designing luxury superyacht interiors.

After New Horizon L’s owner passed away, the yacht was sold to her current owners, who had her rebuilt in Germany. She was lengthed in her stern, and a new top deck was added.

White Cloud is, as her name might suggest, crisp white and immersed in a sense of luxurious lightness. Not only her exterior look, but also her interiors are aimed at allowing ample amounts of natural light, perfectly brightening up the onboard atmosphere. It proves that White Cloud boasts a successfully classic design, a pleasantly and delicately designed vessel with plenty of personality.

The ambiance of light and space immediately welcomes guests upon boarding, with the main aft deck boasting a remarkably spacious area with vista views and one surprising feature, in the form of a sizable Jacuzzi right at the aft deck area. This turns this whole aft deck into an extremely attractive area for guests to spend time while anchored, or during sailing, enjoying a refreshing dip in the Jacuzzi, enjoying the lee and supplied with plenty of privacy. Also close to the swimming platform, it is a convenient way of locating most of water-related pastimes in this section of the vessel. This might seem an uncommon choice, but it absolutely makes sense when one thinks about when it would be most attractive for guests to actually use a Jacuzzi: when sailing, or anchored in a nice private bay, and not while docked at a marina. In any case, it surely offers guests an attractively different experience.

Aside from the Jacuzzi, large enough to comfortably fit a company of at least 8, plenty of space is available on the main aft deck. With various seating arrangements, consisting of classic and light Hampton-style furnishing and a large al fresco dining table, this area is as an intimate, informal and undoubtedly pleasing area for guests to spend ample of their time onboard.

From here, a starboard corridor leads fore towards the fore located, spacious master’s suite and the staircase to the upper deck, where the main saloon can be found. Here, the light and classic style is continued with a spacious area, elegantly designed in a colour palette based on ample white and blue detailing. Smoothly curved furnishings, perfectly suitable for both formal and informal entertaining, the room is centered round a central sitting arrangement with comfortable sofa, lush armchairs and a selection of ottomans around a classic hardwood table. With the adjacent, fully equipped bar and game table, this saloon is truly elegant and stylish, with a distinct warm and inviting ambiance that would undoubtedly appeal to all guests.

From here, the lush and spacious upper aft deck is merely a few steps away, fitted with an additional al fresco dining table and no less than four lounging sofas located aft. The aft sunpads, perfectly located for enjoying the panorama views, more than complete this deck’s broad range of possibilities. It’s easy to imagine this deck a perfect setting for cocktail parties, dinner parties and any other social engagement requiring a spacious, classic and stylish ambiance. With the observation deck, including an aft helicopter pad, located above, main and upper decks are spacious areas perfect for day-to-day living and glamorous entertaining alike.

The large, completely off-white bathroom is a perfect example of White Cloud’s aim for lightness, luxury and finesse. In the yacht’s original design, the open bathroom was integrated in the bedroom, with a large freestanding Jacuzzi made of a single block of gold plated Lapis Lazuli. The yacht’s current owners made several changes, and moved the bathroom forward, to an area previously used as an officer’s mess.

All located on the lower deck, these suites offer luxuriously spacious en suite bathrooms, notably all fitted with bathtubs, and are all designed in a different design with a different theme in mind. The twin suites are designed in a Japanese, Chinese and modern theme respectively, and the VIP is a soothing and light variation to White Cloud’s design style, with subtle red and gold details.
