Superyacht of the week: The Vicem Vulcan 46

In July of 2012, Istanbul-based shipyard Vicem launched the first member of their Vulcan line of superyachts, the 46 metre MY Vulcan. This line, marking the acclaimed yard's uncompromising transition from traditional mahogany construction to new territories of high-tech composite construction, was soon to be extended with 32 metre Bronko in November 2012 and it will be adding a third vessel somewhere in the first semester of 2013. With extending their technical horizons, Vicem are challenging themselves to continue delivering top quality superyachts while broadening their range of possibilities.

Vulcan is an undoubtedly sportive superyacht, which becomes apparent upon watching her sharp and sleek exterior features. Smooth, curved lines are combined with a strong silhouette and a bold colours, showing off a traditional navy blue hull and a contemporary silver superstructure. With sportiveness comes speed and the necessity for a strong, sleek and lightweight design. This resulted in the choice to take on an acclaimed naval architect with a knack for designing speedy superyachts, Frank Mulder, who designed a cored fibreglass construction for Vulcan.

Moving Vicem into the composite-material segment of superyacht construction, Vulcan is a superyacht that is lighter and faster than industry standards, reaching impressive speeds of up to 25 knots. At cruising speed, Vulcan remains highly efficient with 4,000 Nm at 12 knots.

With regards to design, Vulcan boasts an edgy yet familiar look. With her bold exterior colour scheme of blue and silver, and contemporary curves, she shows a confident personality. This uniqueness is also omnipresent in her interior spaces, starting with the main saloon. Here, one finds an open, light and breezy ambiance that seems to combine cinematic futurism, curvy minimalism and a hint of oriental style to form an interior design that is both uniquely charming and undeniably eloquent.

Main ingredients for the colour palette are the warm natural tones of sleek, lacquered mahogany with the clean, slightly creamy off whites found in carpeting, ceilings and furnishing, among others. The main saloon is divided into two separate areas, a cozy aft seating area, adjacent to the aft deck, and a spacious central area combining formal dining and panoramic lounging. Instant eye catchers are the large windows throughout, allowing natural light to flow in and emphasise the airy and dramatic qualities of the interior. The aft area consists of an intimate setup of two large opposite sofas, right next to the large sliding glass doors leading outside to the exterior lounge area, connecting interior and exterior areas. The aft space is light and cozy, boasting an intimate and inviting ambiance.

Moving fore into the starboard lounge and port side dining areas, two white curvy lounging chairs invite guests to sit back, relax and enjoy the spectacular views outside. It feels like the setting for a classic Hollywood movie, smoothly reclining into a modernistic piece of furniture while sipping on a cocktail and enjoying the otherworldly vistas, surrounded by a unique elegance. The main dining enjoys a similar view port side, with a large oval dining table surrounded by a cozy sofa and a set of white wicker dining chairs. Add to that the fore bar, and the main saloon turns into a day to night area for elegant entertaining, pleasantly familiar yet surprisingly different.

Leading upstairs, the upper deck offers an equally light and contemporary upper saloon, with large windows throughout framing the familiar dichromatic colour scheme, applied in a contemporary and light design. With a large, white leather U-shaped sofa accompanied by a set of armchairs as central arrangement for this room, a lounging-ambiance is emphasised here. The curved bar adds that cinematic quality, making the upper lounge a uniquely elegant and charismatic space for guests to spend time in lush ambiance.

Moving fore into the central lobby with the main staircase, one finds an intimate circular lounging nook embedded in the starboard outer wall. This allows guests to elegantly seclude themselves without having to retire to their suites. Clad in white leather, this lounge corner seems ideal for reading a book or daydreaming while taking in the vista views.

Fore of the main deck lobby, the master suite can be found. These quarters consist of a spacious full beam stateroom, including office and lounging areas on port and starboard sides respectively, walk-in wardrobes, lush curvy en suite with big tub, his and hers wash basins and large separate shower area, plus a private office and a separate gym room. The master suite extends Vulcan's design scheme into a private rendition, which is equally contemporary, light and dramatic.

Note the grainy, bronze, curved wall in the en suite, giving the space a luxurious “private grotto”-feel. From the lacquered wood in floors, ceilings, walls and cabinetry, to the plush white carpeting and upholstery, all framed by generous amounts of natural light, the master suite offers lush luxury and plenty of character.

Vulcan offers luxury accommodation for a company of up to 12 guests in 6 suites. All remaining guests suites, one VIP, two doubles and two twins, are located on the lower deck. All staterooms and en suites are designed in similar styles, with ample amounts of light, luxury amenities and a striking personality. The overall ambiance is warm and inviting, undeniably contemporary and luxurious. Due to the dichromatic colour scheme, all staterooms, in fact all interiors of the guests areas, have a soothing atmosphere that is both vibrant and calm. All guest suites offer luxury en suites with large shower areas, ample storage space, large amounts of natural light and modern style combined with subtle yet luxurious materials.

Obviously, Vulcan offers a great selection of exterior deck spaces for guests to enjoy. Starting with the main aft deck that, as mentioned, is situated close to the main saloon aft lounging area. The area is based on a large U-shaped sofa that perfectly sets the tone for many social occasions, from small intimate get-togethers to larger cocktail parties. Upstairs, a breezy and spacious lounge deck can be enjoyed, with large al fresco dining table as centrepiece.

Whether it be big comfy sun loungers, wicker lounge chairs or a cozy sofa, loose furniture can be easily placed around this spacious deck area to suit the needs for any occasion. Last but not least, the sun deck completes Vulcan's array of exterior amenities with a large aft Jacuzzi with adjacent set of sun pads and a lounging area with sofas and chairs fore. All framed with dramatic vista views, perfectly complimenting Vulcan's hospitable nature.
