It’s not every day that one has the opportunity to visit shipyards in the Far East, especially in China. In June, the inaugural SuperYacht Times <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/events/asia-pacific-summit-2024-2024" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Asia-Pacific Summit</a> in Hong Kong provided a perfect occasion to explore regional shipyards and marinas. Recently, the Asia-Pacific region has been increasing its share in the construction of yachts over 30-metres in length.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332002/image/large-fea235340d9ae4c2209734e97934a880.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332002">During the summit, SuperYacht Times' Head of Intelligence, Ralph Dazert, presented the <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/market-reports/asia-pacific-superyacht-market-report-2024" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Asia-Pacific Market Report 2024</a>, which outlined this trend. According to the report, as of the beginning of 2024, builders from the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 509 out of the 5,787 operating yachts over 30-metres worldwide, representing a share of 8.8%. This positions the region as the third-largest superyacht construction area globally, following Europe (including Turkey) and North America. Moreover, over the past decade, the share of builders from the Asia-Pacific region has increased to 9.9%, with these builders delivering 159 out of the 1,604 yachts completed between 2014 and 2023. As a result, the region now ranks second after Europe, as the influence of North America has declined.SuperYacht Times Features writer Enrico Chhibber recently visited <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> at their facilities in Zhuhai, China, just before the commencement of the Summit. After a pick up in Hong Kong, Enrico met with Fiona Li, the head of marketing at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>, and was driven across the border towards Zhuhai.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332001/image/large-5cd01e6d8d238d387a69cdc8691186e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332001">Cheoy Lee</a> is one of the oldest family-run shipyards in the Asia-Pacific region, with a storied history. Originally founded in 1870 by the Lo family in China, the company relocated to Hong Kong in the 1930s. While the company maintains its head office and a small repair yard in Kowloon, Hong Kong, it relocated its construction facilities from Penny’s Bay to Zhuhai, China, in 1996. Since then, the Penny’s Bay site has been transformed into what is now Hong Kong's Disneyland.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220646/image/large-5477a925a390ad705be09ae7d33a0b6e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220646"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> has constructed numerous innovative yachts and was one of the first shipyards in the region to use fibreglass, notably on the 39.78-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3836" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nataly39.78m (130'6&quot;)Cheoy Lee1978">Nataly</a> (formerly Shango II), which was the largest fibreglass yacht ever built at the time of her construction in 1978. However, the yard's expertise extends beyond fibreglass; it also works extensively with steel and aluminium. Among the well-known superyachts constructed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> are the 46-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Avalon46.0m (150'11&quot;)Cheoy Lee2011">Avalon</a> and the 45-metre explorer yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2307" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Limited Risks45.0m (147'8&quot;)Cheoy Lee2007">Limited Risks</a> (formerly Marco Polo).Upon our arrival at the shipyard, we were warmly greeted by Martin Lo, the Director, and his nephew, Hans Lo, the Deputy Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>. Hans represents the fifth generation of his family to work at the company. They escorted us to the main meeting room, where Martin shared his background in yachting. Born into a shipbuilding family, his career path seemed a natural progression. He emphasised the importance of a family-run shipyard to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>'s identity. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/247078/image/large-b55615fc33411404935e67ddb8b13459.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/247078">In late 2018, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> underwent a strategic restructuring. The company's luxury production arm was rebranded as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6398" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CL Yachts (Company)">CL Yachts</a>, while larger custom builds continued under the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> brand. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> shipyards are focused on the production of commercial vessels, including offshore supply vessels, tugs, and ferries.Regarding the production ratio between commercial and pleasure yachts, Lo stated that at present it stands at 85% commercial projects and 15% pleasure craft. As for the yachts currently under construction, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> has two explorer motor yachts in the pipeline: the 39.73-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10701" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer39.73m (130'4&quot;)Cheoy Lee2024">Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer</a> and the 32.76-metre Cheoy Lee 107. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332003/image/large-040340f503dfd284944242680f218609.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332003">Lo then explained that the city of Zhuhai and the surrounding area has developed into a hub for the production and refit of commercial vessels. Additionally, he mentioned that some local shipyards have recently started to venture into yacht construction.When asked about the state of the domestic yacht market, Lo explained that the majority of yachts built in China are intended for international markets. He specified that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>'s primary clientele has traditionally been in North America, with additional clients in Europe. She has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, and features exterior design and naval architecture by Overing Yacht Designs, while her interior was penned by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sylvia Bolton Design, Inc. (Company)">Sylvia Bolton Design</a>.&nbsp;During our tour onboard, it was evident to see Lo’s passion for yacht building and emphasis on quality. He shared that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> had formed a partnership with Genesis, an Italian furniture company based in Tuscany, to supply parts for the yacht interiors. Looking to the East: At the shipyard with Cheoy Lee

Nestled within the craggy coastline of the southwest of England are a number of leading shipyards, specialising in the design and build of both motor and sailing yachts. There’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a>, of course, a major player in all three areas – new build, rebuild and refit – which occupies a major corner of the idyllic Cornish town, Falmouth. On the other side of the Tamar, in Plymouth, is where another industry leader laid bricks and mortar, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a>. But the Devonshire port city was also home to a lesser-known builder, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/96" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Devonport (Company)">Devonport Yachts</a> – the shipyard which built and delivered the United Kingdom’s modern flagship superyacht, not once but twice. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/245064/image/large-a913e43e123b8d60013784148bc47964.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/245064">The 82-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/307" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarafsa82.0m (269'0&quot;)Devonport2008">Sarafsa</a> proudly claimed the plinth from 2008 - 2014, and her story has an unlikely origin: the Netherlands. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a>’ 54.5-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/852" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Faribana V54.5m (178'10&quot;)Amels1998">Faribana V</a> (ex. Sarafsa) was the seed that fertilised the road from concept to sea. Her owner enjoyed life on the water, the pleasures of superyachting and the excitement that comes with overseeing the construction of a major project. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/852" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Faribana V54.5m (178'10&quot;)Amels1998">Faribana V</a> was a great success and the fact that she’s only had two owners since 1998, and was sold after being on the market for less than three months, speaks volumes. But her commissioning owner wanted more volume – 2,347 GT more to be precise.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/245088/image/large-9826817d09344b39628501d6d0bec6a4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/245088"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/245085/image/large-c5d690c5519899fe6a0a632035dbb0eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/245085"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design</a>, headed by Andrew Winch, displayed deft craftsmanship with both the exterior and interior design of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/852" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Faribana V54.5m (178'10&quot;)Amels1998">Faribana V</a>, and the client wanted to emulate this success. After enjoying life on the water with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a>-built superyacht, the client knew exactly what they liked and what didn’t fit so well with his lifestyle; they re-approached the British studio with a fresh list of requisites and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Andrew Winch</a> was more than happy to stretch the dimensions and draw up a fresh design. The result was an 82-metre project.&nbsp;Even though <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/96" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Devonport (Company)">Devonport Yachts</a> had built and delivered just two superyachts prior to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/307" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarafsa82.0m (269'0&quot;)Devonport2008">Sarafsa</a>, it was the British shipyard’s weighty maritime history that won over the client. “The yacht had to be British through and through,” &nbsp;Matt Pinckney of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/159" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burgess (Company)">Burgess</a> explained. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/96" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Devonport (Company)">Devonport</a> was chosen because of a long shipping history – predominantly looking after the Royal Navy. And commissioning a 3,179 gross tonne project, it was essential that a yard with large vessel experience was selected.” With such prowess, commissioning <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/96" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Devonport (Company)">Devonport Yachts</a> for the project wasn’t as much of a vote of confidence as one might have thought. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/245063/image/large-c1d525edfa060f017e86c0a189b462c4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/245063">A major difference between the first and second project is the naval architecture, the former was engineered by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a> while the latter was the work of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/273" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burness Corlett - Three Quays Limited (Company)">Burness Corlett - Three Quays Limited</a>. But “there are many similarities between his previous yacht and the new one, not only due to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Andrew Winch</a> design, but in many influences that have been repeated,” Pinckney continued. She embodies a Middle Eastern sensibility that wouldn’t seem out of place framed in marble as the setting for political debate or as an abode fit for royalty. She’s a superyacht that spans six decks, with an elevator that services all levels. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/307" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarafsa82.0m (269'0&quot;)Devonport2008">Sarafsa</a> can accommodate as many as 14 guests across seven staterooms. Meanwhile, the bridge deck is a wealth of entertainment. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design</a> planned this deck to cater for large social gatherings, fitting her with a spacious informal lounge area and fully equipped bar, a formal dining room for up to 16 guests which leads seamlessly to the aft deck where a bar and buffet area can be found.
