SYT Synopsis January: Revolutionary rebuilds and radical designs

Strong headway has been made in Amsterdam with the forthcoming <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus (Company)">Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus</a>, as construction moves forward. The first phase of the quay is being built and the process of making 22 hectares of extra land is still ongoing but taking shape quickly.&nbsp;The team will enter phase two, building docks one, two and three next month, with completion expected by June 2023. In the coming weeks, work should also commence on the quays and floating pier.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263037/image/large-ecf82b72fcc7ec28f2bb7e5ce93b8313.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263037">The historic 53-hectare plot of land in the western port area of Amsterdam was acquired by the investment company Larendael in November 2022 and ground was broken last summer. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> has announced their new project Scuola dei Mestieri (School of Trades), a professional training course for 18 to 30-year-olds looking to build a career in boatbuilding.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263034/image/large-67848c46907f1bd04f21730f85a281ec.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263034">The course combines theory and experience in the yard, with the programme offering classroom sessions and workshops to on-the-job training in production department. The course aims to create real career opportunities for participants, such as naval carpentry, deck fitting, engine mechanics, the list goes on.The first edition of the three-month course officially launched in March, and will be held at the “Don Bosco” Professional Training Centre in Forlì. After this first stage in Forlì, the Scuola dei Mestieri will move to Mondolfo and Sarnico in September to involve more young people in the new project. As a world leader in the design, construction, and sales of luxury yachts, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> will share their expertise to the participants. After selling the firm to First Niagara Financial Group, Rob was appointed as the company’s Senior Vice President, where he guided the Insurance Division with over $600,000,000 in annual sales. He also founded Lama Commercial Real Estate, where he negotiated site acquisitions for a number of large American retailers, including Walmart, CVS, and Rite Aid. During this time, Lama owned a yacht in Miami for his entire family to enjoy.&nbsp;After moving to Miami, Lama combined his love of yachting with his business acumen, establishing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5135" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miami International Yacht Sales LLC. (Company)">Miami International Yacht Sale</a>. Lama’s business and negotiation experience enabled him to find his niche in the sale of vessels over 30-metres. After attempting to meet up during a very busy boot Dusseldorf, we finally had the chance to sit down with Nick Gelevert, Founder and CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> over Teams in early February. Nick comes from a long line of yacht brokers, his grandfather Hans Lengers founding the Netherlands’ first brokerage. Today Nick is both the CEO of the ‘first Dutch superyacht charter company’ <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> with seven international offices and an impressive portfolio of pedigree yachts, and the Sales Director of brokerage firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/359" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lengers Yachts (Company)">Lengers</a>. With expansion always on his mind, Nick has much in store for the boutique charter firm. SYT found out more. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262239/image/large-028247e85db04278e4d7d6c2adfec517.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262239">With a legacy of brokerage in your family, was it always your plan to become a broker?I was born and raised in the midst of the yachting industry, and of course it came to my mind from a young age that I might work in the industry as well. My grandfather started selling yachts in the 1970s and there was also a boat building business within the family, so yachting is truly part of my family heritage. When the time came for me to start my first business however, I decided to break from the family tradition and I founded a company within the real estate industry. I think it was partly a youthful rebellion – I was only 23 – but I quickly realised that I’d made a mistake not following my passion for the yachting industry.I had been an active and competitive sailor from the age of eight, racing every week, and of course having grown up within my family, yachting was truly where my heart lay. So I &nbsp;decided to pivot the concept I’d created within the real estate industry, and do something similar within yachting. The business became <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters</a>; the first AirBnB for boats. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/69988/image/large-e5de394c61cf3a6b29fbcc9408e9bf14.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/69988">So how did an AirBnB for boats transform into a superyacht charter brokerage house?In 2015 we launched the platform and were the first in the world to do so. There were some other early adopters but we grew very quickly, operating in 63 countries with 12,000 boats available for rent. It was a successful beginning but we quickly realised that in order to become a truly profitable business, we would need a huge operational network. Boats are nothing like houses; they need work, maintenance and expansive shoreside support.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/50182/image/large-00c42362b1bed144ada7b119cd9afc4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50182">Why do you think that the company has done so well – how do you stand out from the crowd?At the same time as I was having these thoughts, clients from Lengers were generating leads and asking questions about Boatsters and enquiring if I could assist them with yacht charter. From these leads came a very organic transition into <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a>, where we began to work with crewed yachts above 20-metres. Not long after this transition, we took Boatsters offline and I focused my energies on the development of the superyacht charter business. Since that decision we’ve opened international offices, are managing some very exciting yachts and expect to double our fleet in 2023. The company is positive and profitable and with the direction we’re currently going, we will be one of the top players in the charter industry within a few years.&nbsp;I believe that our approach is what makes us stand out. We are a boutique charter company, and we don't have aspirations to be the biggest, we want to provide the best service to a limited number of clients. We have regular contact with owners, we offer a personal concierge service for onshore support, we are incredibly active and make our clients really feel how much we value them. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216778/image/large-e3b74dc8cf7cf04994e4b19dd6e7c678.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216778">What has it been like breaking into an industry that has been dominated by long standing and large companies, such as&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a>?When we set out we knew it would be like David and Goliath, but I have always enjoyed a challenge. My aspiration when we set out was to establish <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> as the industry’s first Dutch charter house, just as my grandfather was the first Dutch broker. I am happy to say we’ve achieved that goal and now we are looking to the next challenge.&nbsp;The yachting industry has an obsession with being the biggest, with companies claiming ‘the biggest charter fleet’ or the most charters completed, but what does that actually mean for the client? Very likely it means an impersonal approach, with yachts being managed by a conglomerate rather than a person &nbsp;– we do not aspire to become that kind of business!&nbsp;What are your plans for the future for the business?The next stage is expansion. We’ve built a base from which the company can grow exponentially and my attention first will be to make sure that our services are the best they can be. We aren’t going to be accepting any and all boats to the fleet, but really making sure that the yacht is able to offer clients the best services, with a stable crew and good knowledge base.&nbsp;In 2022 we had a revenue of over €12 million and with an expansion into the full spectrum of services including crewing and management, I expect that to see a stable increase this year. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216755/image/large-6c1f9a59bba24e5170d83edfc3039cf0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216755">Finally, what advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?Firstly, focus on an aspect of this industry and be the best at that aspect. There are so many generalists within yachting and what there needs to be is more specialists. According to Ferruccio Rossi, Executive Director &amp; General Manager of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1011" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simpson Marine (Company)">Simpson Marine</a> currently generates around €90-100 million annually, with “growing potential” for more sales in the region. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/186547/image/large-027506dd02607cf9f9f97c2bd2ae425b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/186547">Read:&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/54941" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="How Hong Kong could ignite a yachting boom in China (2022-04-12 14:00:00 +0200)">How Hong Kong could ignite a yachting boom in China</a>Outside of Asia and looking at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> more generally, the builder confirmed outstanding financial health with a backlog (as of 31 December 2022) cleared from Net Revenue New Yachts amounting to €1,069.6 million, compared to €915.6 million as of 31 December 2021. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> confirmed record-breaking orders for €452.2 million beyond 2023.&nbsp;An interesting phenomenon cited in the conference was a decrease in the average <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> client. Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> buyers were, on average, 56 yet post-lockdown years, this age now stands at 48 – a significant decrease that brings a “new mindset to the yachting industry”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/178254/image/large-41061535f69fe7ca1d2c1b710787f63e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/178254"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> has found that their average buyer is not only younger but is now spending twice as much time on board, with estimates as high as 120 days per year. A new industry initiative has been launched by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) that focuses on the impact the yachting industry has on the world’s forests. The initiative encourages clear sustainability goals and open dialogues for more responsible solutions. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263032/image/large-9840fc3a207fde264c781f549845604d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263032">“Yachts are an extreme luxury product, but the industry is also an important sector in the innovation of new and greener solutions for the shipbuilding industry in general,” Kristian Jørgensen, technical advisor at FSC Denmark, stated. “We often see innovation in the areas of engine technology, energy efficiency, synthetic fibres, and the direct impact of different materials on the marine environment. But the time has come to pay more attention to the timber that is used.”Timber is a staple resource for the industry, whether that’s teak decking, masts and booms, or interior outfitting – you’ll be hard-pressed to find a yacht that doesn’t make use of the material in some form. The pact set out by the FSC is committed to set standards for the origin of the timber used, to help mitigate risks against negatively impacting endangered forests and the people that live there. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263015/image/large-b70e3c64fd22b16b99acf0958fc9cea6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263015">“This initiative encourages businesses to set targets which FSC, with its wide-ranging experience, supports by providing guidance and expert advice. Delivered by the Dutch shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> in 2005, she was launched under her maiden name, Lady Christina. In 2014 the yacht underwent a refit that took place at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92</a> in Barcelona. The project involved extending the main aft deck and adding a new Jacuzzi to the sundeck. Onboard, the 1,166 GT superyacht can accommodate as many as 12 guests across six staterooms. She also has nine cabins that can host a total of 15 crew. The generation of the power needed to sail at maximum speed will therefore no longer be tied to diesel engines, but rather will be based on a combination of fuel cells and internal combustion engines powered by green methanol. The Dutch superyacht designer Cor D. Rover was quite literally born on the water. “I was born aboard an inland barge like one of those you can see in this marina,” he casually told me waving to the run of traditional Dutch boats lined up outside his floating office on the Nieuw Maass river in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254388/image/large-1bd9fdd1f9d322a2e45dfe712159c47b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254388">With the lights gently swaying above our heads as his floating office rode the undulating waves, he continued his story. “I’m one of six and all of us have a strong connection with the water. In the warmer months we were always swimming, sailing, or enjoying all types of water sports,” he said with deep nostalgia.As a Dutchman, Cor and his siblings lived a life not out of the ordinary; for anyone that’s visited the country or knows its inhabitants well, the waterways are much more than a picturesque backdrop. But not every Dutchman makes a career out of this lifestyle – in that regard, Cor is one of the few exceptions. “It nearly wasn’t to be though,” Cor chuckled. “I have always been interested in technology – everything that moves, in fact – and the plan was originally to become an aeroplane designer.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254402/image/large-9767d9531d56e118710729bee89861f3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254402">But he couldn’t shake the itch for ships and shipbuilding; living amongst the great yards just outside Rotterdam in Hardinxveld-Giessendam inspired him to stick to his roots. “I was born on a boat, lived close to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen Yachting</a> and, really, ships have always been a major staple of my life,” Cor said. “It just made sense to pursue mechanical engineering and shipbuilding at university.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/118269/image/large-3fb2b240d2a5cdafb9a85edecc52836e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/118269">After graduating in 1986, Cor’s began to fill his notepads with yacht designs, working under the patronage of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Frank Mulder</a> for 11 years. In the small studio just outside of Amsterdam, Cor developed an apt penmanship for aesthetics and the clean exterior styling he’s known and praised for today.“Prior to joining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Frank Mulder Design</a> my work was purely technical,” Cor confessed. “It was a steep learning curve getting a grasp on how to execute strong theoretical designs with clean aesthetics.” His work at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Frank Mulder Design</a> laid the foundations for his success, and after building a strong reputation within the industry Cor set out on his own, founding his eponymously named studio in 1997. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/15755/image/large-076fab1ff808b285a7f1c4d31162ea20.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15755"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/15710/image/large-6a33de09be0a97c15d8b308069510a96.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15710">To date, under his own insignia, Cor has designed 75 yachts 24-metres in length or longer and an astonishing number of smaller yachts. Out of those 75 larger yachts, 66 are currently in operation, the largest being the 67-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5659" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seasense67.0m (219'10&quot;)Benetti SpA2017">Seasense</a> built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> and delivered in 2017. But this superyacht will soon be superseded by an all-new 60-metre Ice Class explorer with 1,700 GT of interior volume – 525 GT more than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5659" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seasense67.0m (219'10&quot;)Benetti SpA2017">Seasense</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254401/image/large-0ca6a11c0a5e7737148da28154bb431f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254401"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254399/image/large-037dcbb36984575a2047fa2846cc734d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254399">Cor was pretty guarded about this latest project but did confirm that the design had been finalised and approved by the client and will be built in the Netherlands. Another forthcoming project that Cor teased but was just as discreet about was a new full-custom 33-metre motor yacht that will also be built locally.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254386/image/large-22d7079e18cb37f60772e620532cb09e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254386">Working out of such a traditional enclave of the Netherlands, you’d expect his walls to be adorned with classic vessels – but this couldn’t be further from the truth. His 1930s office, originally used by the local police force before the Second World War, is a harbinger of the past.Yet the artistic black and white prints of his diverse fleet that fight for your attention, are anything but. The print that really steals the limelight, though, is an aerial top-down photograph of the radical 2021-delivered superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> anchored alongside her 36-metre superyacht vessel <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8874" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi Phantom36.0m (118'1&quot;)Alia Yachts2021">Phi Phantom</a>. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254390/image/large-61b304738131294fae91604c3a23212c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254390">The story of the 58.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> is a devastating story – and a tale that most of us know. Before she could embark on her maiden voyage and bask in the Mediterranean heat she visited London. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> was quickly pounced upon by the British authorities, as a consequence of Putin’s actions in Ukraine. Despite not being on the sanction list, the owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> had his brand-new superyacht arrested – and, to this day, the legal battle persists. But the story that many of us don’t know is how she came to be.&nbsp;“A client approached me around five years ago who wanted a superyacht that was at once unusual and outstanding,” Cor explained. “The client loved technology and wanted only the best features onboard. I had only recently patented my ‘dump tank eliminating pool floor’ that makes use of an inflatable rubber seal to turn the pool into a ballast when not in use. Typically the pool water needs to be drained when the yacht’s cruising, but with our system a client can ‘lock the water’ in and move freely, saving both time and energy.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254394/image/large-31b8a0e91d96a1fe33e654940bd337eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254394">Radical designs call for radical measures – and the client was all for it. “Let’s build a boat around the pool,” he exclaimed after Cor pitched the idea. But the rest of the design didn’t materialise until later that year.“One evening during a boat show in Beijing, Perry van Oossanen (founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen Naval Architects</a>) and I were sitting on the top floor of the hotel burning some hours, discussing projects. When I brought up this latest design we started to draw it out and landed on the idea of designing the world’s longest sub-500 GT superyacht – it was perfect for the project.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/211064/image/large-05f4888722b47787984d0074b815a890.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/211064">Perry van Oossanen incorporated his world-renowned Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) and oversaw the engineering of the project, while Cor D. Rover took charge of the styling. “Together we created an intriguing design that pushes boundaries,” Cor reflected.“It’s a record-breaking yacht that comes with compromises, as it has an extremely narrow bow. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> has all the characteristics of a sailing yacht, and we needed a builder with this expertise. A sailboat builder that’s used to optimising every cubic inch.” It then comes as no surprise that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> was approached for the project.&nbsp;“You don’t go to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> and ask to make the best deal in terms of costs, you go to Royal Huisman to build the best,” Cor said. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has an incredible pedigree and they were very happy to sign a major motor yacht contract, especially as sailing yachts are strangely a diminishing market.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254392/image/large-b7ea46706da7262c5c622dcaed61adef.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254392">With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> being such a slender design, it was paramount to optimise living space. The London-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4998" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lawson Robb (Company)">Lawson Robb</a> took charge of her interior styling and created “a tranquil atmosphere that has an incredibly family-friendly general arrangement,” as Cor describes it. However, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> only carries a single rescue tender on the foredeck: all the paraphernalia is carried by the Alia-built support yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8874" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi Phantom36.0m (118'1&quot;)Alia Yachts2021">Phi Phantom</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/211063/image/large-a93164b8b90f4b30892b6f9b92fb000e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/211063">“Perry and I also worked together on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8874" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi Phantom36.0m (118'1&quot;)Alia Yachts2021">Phi Phantom</a> which we designed with a pure focus on practicality. While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> has all the onboard entertainment, the sub-300 GT <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8874" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi Phantom36.0m (118'1&quot;)Alia Yachts2021">Phi Phantom</a> has all the tenders, toys and additional fuel.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/212581/image/large-780bbfaeab36c973bac71affa43b8750.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/212581">Full-custom projects are only half of the operations at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D. Rover Design</a> though, and the studio is perhaps best known for its work with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon Yachts</a>: a prolific builder that launches one FD Series yacht most months – and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D. Rover</a> can be accredited to each of these builds. Currently, a total of 62 are built or in-build. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/212589/image/large-b91362d551b9c2a26c2952e5e6ce01eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/212589">“We approached Horizon at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show - 2023">Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show</a> in 2012 with a design that we believed perfect for a production series. Our design maximised the amount of real estate possible onboard a 24-metre platform, incorporating a five-stateroom layout that’s typically found on much larger yachts. John Lu, CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon</a>, saw the plans and immediately saw the potential: ‘Let’s build it!’ he declared there and then.” And the rest is history. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254395/image/large-b8325ba0aa8151d2b88130a53c9545ce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254395">A major focus for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon Yachts</a> was to be family-friendly and a safe place to be on the water. “We created SUVs for the sea,” Cor reflected. “Aesthetically an SUV looks safe, sturdy and practical; clients feel protected when they’re onboard.” It wasn’t long until a number of other designers and builders were adopting style cues from the popular series; imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/199549/image/large-d39010f9f0382e7c46327c85016a8ce4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/199549"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. It’s a small yet mighty team operating from a quaint traditional corner of the Netherlands, championing innovation and ground-breaking design.
