Josh Francis, charter broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TJB Super Yachts (Company)">TJB</a>, set the scene: “As a cruising destination, the Maldives offers an experience different to anywhere else on earth. Here, the sand is a dazzling shade of white, contrasting the rich greenery on land.&nbsp;“I would recommend anyone to get PADI certified before travelling, as scuba diving in the Maldives is some of the world’s best,” commented Josh Francis. The country’s various lagoons and Protected Marine Areas are famed for having some of the world’s best snorkelling sites overflowing with sea life. Debra Blackburn, charter broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser Yachts</a> told SYT “Visiting St. Barths feels as if you’ve stopped at the St. Tropez of the Caribbean. One of the most popular islands of the French West Indies, St Barths oozes a luxury feel that can be experienced in its lavish resorts and glistening bars and eateries. She continued, “Time spent here is filled with amazing dining, world-class shopping and nightlife to rival the best of the South of France.”Further west is the British Virgin Islands, comprising over 60 islands and cays waiting to be explored. Igniting visions of turquoise waters, desert islands and pirate legends, a visit to the BVI on a superyacht guarantees the ultimate tranquil escapism. A bounty of sand bars and point breaks make the BVI a fantastic surfing destination; the Northern Shores of Tortola is loved by surfers for its excellent waves at Josiah’s Bay and Capoons Bay.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280944/image/large-6aaa3789ac6f3d11ceba79bc852c7f79.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280944">GrenadaGrenada sits in the South of the Caribbean and is one of the most glorious cruising grounds in this part of the world. For Abigail Davies of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a>, “The beauty of Grenada is the abundance of unspoilt landscapes, diverse wildlife and vibrant Caribbean culture while remaining more low key in comparison to some of the more popular Caribbean destinations.” From visiting majestic waterfalls, such as the sheer and beautiful Concord Falls to the west of the island, to seeing Mona monkeys in their natural habitat, guests in Grenada feel transported to a tropical paradise.The country’s capital, St George, has a laid-back island pace and is regarded among many as the prettiest Caribbean capital. Guests can wander the narrow streets of this harbour town, framed by colourful frontages and palm trees.

Known as Neptune’s Bellows, the lake is actually a flooded caldera, a result of a volcanic eruption some 10,000 years ago.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/269871/image/large-fc8d1c1f5377091376dd4993bc5969ed.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/269871">Despite its fear mongering title, hiking around Deception Island is a popular activity among those on an Antarctic adventure. The glacial island is home to many hiking routes, each varying in intensity, but all sharing the same ethereal views of the fluorescent aqua interior caldera. Adding to the island’s menacing feel are the many abandoned sites and ruins that make up its intriguing history. Whalers Bay, once a bustling hub at the height of the whaling industry, is today the ruinous final resting place of some of Antarctica’s most significant whaling artefacts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/269870/image/large-a7e0370f505d2fa8b67abae0e2164450.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/269870">Though most of Antarctica is isolated, the Vernadsky Research Centre has a strong life force. There are also two types of captains: those who follow the conventions of yachting and those who push its boundaries. Captain Paolo Bozzo Costa, the man at the helm of the 54-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Overmarine Group SPA (Company)">Overmarine</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a>, is the latter type of captain and has been graced with working with the latter type of owner for the past 10 years. In the final stages of completing a massive two year world trip aboard the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Overmarine Group SPA (Company)">Overmarine</a>-built yacht to circumnavigate, Captain Paolo Bozzo Costa is living out his dream of being a superyacht captain, something that became very clear during our call between Thailand and Amsterdam. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/96383/image/large-97e2f1fca230ad5665ce7a7727f70cab.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96383">Living the dreamBut before he embarked on this once-in-a-lifetime journey, he’s been a captain for the past 16 years and started out on a smaller, 20-metre yacht. Step by step, he worked his way up to 30, 40 and, now, a 54-metre yacht. “My goal has always been to become a captain on an amazing yacht. That’s exactly what I am doing now and I couldn’t be happier about it!” he said with a prominent grin. As the first Mangusta yacht to complete an ocean crossing, Captain Paolo Bozzo Costa is helping to redefine the predetermined <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224035/image/large-7d0621b2df1ef727806e5bf1e4e734a8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224035">Before serving as the captain of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a>, Paolo was the captain of the owner’s previous yacht, the 39.65-metre Mangusta yacht Mo Mo, now named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2942" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Crazy39.65m (130'1&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2014">Crazy</a> by her new owner, which he worked closely with the owner and the shipyard to supervise the yacht’s construction. While Mo Mo was faster, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a>, who is also fast considering she reaches a top speed of 30 knots, can travel further and wider with a range of 4,200 nautical miles. With this, Captain Paolo Bozzo Costa and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a>’s owner were inspired to travel to further and more remote places than they had with Mo Mo.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224032/image/large-034243d05a880cc56580c271511ff5b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224032">Bon Voyage“It wasn’t our original plan to do a worldwide tour, but after the winter season in the Caribbean in 2019, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a>’s owner asked me: ‘so, where can we go next?’ I told him that we could go anywhere, even Alaska. He said, ‘can we really go to Alaska?’ We then crossed the Panama Canal, went up to California for some maintenance and began to make our way up to Alaska,” Paolo recalled. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a>’s itinerary to Alaska began in British Columbia where they did 1,800 nautical miles of coastline, exploring each nook and cranny along the way. “We saw everything! Killer whales, bears on the shoreline, small icebergs floating in the sea and so much beautiful landscape. It was incredibly special to think that this is a place that so few people, and superyachts visit.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224027/image/large-782b97f316fa190fbbc7f4d127dc691a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224027">After experiencing the Alaskan cold – even during the summer – <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a> made her way back down south to Baja California in Mexico. When asked what one of the peak moments of this world tour has been thus far, Captain Paolo Bozzo Costa replied, “In Baja California, you can see probably the most beautiful sunset in the world. I’ve never seen one so beautiful.” Having sailed all around the world at this point, he can certainly be considered an authority on identifying the world’s best sunsets.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224038/image/large-80aebc769fcec0dbe148f9cb1ad407d6.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224038">Having explored the incredible coastlines of the Caribbean, Mexico, the United States and Canada, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a>’s owner once again asked Paolo, “Where can we go next?” It was at this point that crossing the Pacific, though a mighty feat, seemed like the natural next challenge. Though a Mangusta yacht had never done a Pacific ocean crossing, Captain Paolo Bozzo Costa knew that the vessel was more than capable so long as they managed the weather forecast. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224034/image/large-d95b2e97fcaa77ccf8a0599352c3f28b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224034">From here, they stopped in the Galapagos which due to its highly protective environmental regulations, required the extensive cleaning of the yacht and a close inspection of the vessel by local authorities to ensure she was cleared to cruise in these famously biodiverse islands. With more crystal clear waters on their minds, they crossed the Pacific to French Polynesia. With the world tour progressing swimmingly, March 2020 hit and the pandemic threw a bit of a wrench into these ambitious plans.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224037/image/large-528d7b589966893f4f46e36f2e01aac7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224037">“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a>’s owner was able to fly to French Polynesia and we began our itinerary. After 10 days, we were contacted by local authorities and instructed to drop anchor because French Polynesia was also going into lockdown. We stayed here for 45 days until the lockdown there was lifted and we were able to resume our travels there”. They then made their way to Bora Bora, which Captain Paolo Bozzo Costa described as “ominous” and a “strange experience” because of how trafficked it usually is by tourists. Van Ineveld &amp; Co will also work as the owner’s representative during her build.The 68m ketch has been commissioned by a highly experienced repeat client, who wanted increased accommodation and the ability to cross the Panama Canal. “The ketch rig provides the so-called Panamax mast height to allow the yacht to clear the Bridge of The Americas at the southern end of the waterway,” commented Andre Hoek.Key design features onboard the 68m ketch include three deck houses, with the owner and guest accommodation aft and the crew forward. A large, central guest cockpit will be the focal point of the deck layout and all the deck houses will be clad in wood.&nbsp;“Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) testing and velocity prediction programmes (VPP) have been developed in-house and used extensively to optimise her hull shape and appendages,” explained Andre Hoek.&nbsp;“The yacht’s fixed keel features a trim tab on the fin to reduce leeway and improve balance with the ketch rig, and she is designed with a single rudder with mechanical steering, which provides the helmsman with the ‘feel’ required to help sail the boat to her optimum performance.”The new yacht will be equipped with a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2447" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Spars (Company)">Southern Spars</a> rig package, providing her with an extensive collection of sails. She will also be powered by a low emissions diesel electric propulsion and charging system.&nbsp;A permanent magnet electric motor will provide charging for the battery bank and propulsion when leaving a harbour or anchorage, enabling the yacht to be run for a considerable ‘silent’ period, with all systems working off her battery bank.The yacht’s aluminium hull and deck will be fabricated in-house at their Zwartsluis premises, with the keel due to be laid in April 2024. “This is the eighth project we have worked on together with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/33" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hoek Design Naval Architects B.V. The Grand Explorer yacht has been conceptualised with the design of a patrol vessel in mind. Philippe has created a smooth design, retaining the silhouette of the patrol vessel, featuring a glazed area on the yacht, as well as a unique wheelhouse with 360 degree views.&nbsp;The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/416" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocea (Company)">Ocea</a> Grand Explorer has been designed with privacy in mind, featuring an entirely enclosed stern. Vincent Guilbault, head of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/416" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocea (Company)">Ocea</a> R&amp;D department commented on the design process of the new project stating, “We’re demanding that these boats be fast, seaworthy in any weather, and comfortable for long missions. They also need to be stable so that they can easily deploy resources: tenders, helicopters, etc. The problem is the same for a yacht.”&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/416" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocea (Company)">Ocea</a> prides itself on being both a yacht builder and a specialist in the construction of aluminium workboats, transport boats and maritime surveillance vessels, boasting four production sites along the French Atlantic coast.Regarding performance, the Grand Explorer superyacht can be powered by conventional, electric or hybrid propulsion systems, and is available in lengths from 58 to 84-metres. “Admiral Lord Nelson’s old adage that ‘Ships and men rot in port’ is just as true now as it was in his era,” muses Michael White, Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TWW Yachts (Company)">TWW Yachts</a>, when asked about the benefits for an owner considering charter when building their yacht.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/286824/image/large-4bea38b04840ca950b771c3aec26be6c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/286824">“Building with charter in mind is sensible for three key reasons,” White continues. “The first, and most obvious reason, is financial: depending on how much time an owner will give us, he is likely to see a substantial contribution towards operating costs or even in some instances making a capital return on their investment. Keeping a focused and busy crew that keeps the vessel running properly is the second. While the third, and often overlooked reason is tax breaks: certain countries offer tax advantages for commercial vessels operating as a business.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/286817/image/large-4d5d7e2099c4d79ec3a0da637f57878c.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/286817">&nbsp;Commercially classifying a new build should also be seen as a long-term investment; regardless of whether an owner decides to charter their yacht, building to international standards and classifications will be beneficial when the time comes to sell. Most second time owners will wish to have the yacht working in charter, and as such it’s a sensible investment to build to meet charter requirements. “As a prerequisite for being commercially classified, yachts are built to very high safety standards. Durability and upkeep are also major considerations for the build team – all crucial considerations for a future buyer” says White. “And if that buyer is looking to make an enterprise from their investment – which most are! – then they’re far more likely to consider a yacht that was built to charter requirements. Otherwise, a seller might be left with two choices: sell below market value or invest time and money in refitting to meet these standards.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/273081/image/large-77753f90a22e13a82f4037a13dc92ca6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/273081">The ideal charter yacht? There really isn’t a one-size-fits-all, and the common idea of a ‘perfect charter yacht’ is probably a misnomer. There are, of course, good traits and makeup of a good charter yacht, but the complete DNA is thankfully subjective – otherwise, we’d have the same yacht built time and time again. Everyone has his own ideas and the type and size of the yacht will depend on so many aspects – where the vessel is to be chartered, budget, and individual choice.&nbsp;“If an owner wants to maximise charter revenue, a displacement yacht capable of crossing the Atlantic to operate in both seasons might be a sensible choice,” White explains. “But if you want to exclusively charter in the Bahamas, for instance, you’d likely look for a faster boat with a shallow draft. The style and type of yacht are just as directed by needs; however, market demands should also be considered. It’s important to understand how and why a yacht should be used, as well as insights into current and future trends.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/273123/image/large-7c7177a824af184bae282cd2c4cb8500.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/273123"> Before starting a new build project it’s always sensible to appoint a good project management team. Not only invaluable throughout construction, but also a thorough specification review will highlight any shortfalls that can be put right and budgeted for before the build begins. This expertise will ensure success in both the short and long term. There might be times when the original specifications look great on paper but are flawed in reality – a keen, experienced eye should identify and rectify any problems early which will mitigate hurdles post-delivery. Regular reporting and a presence in the shipyard will ensure that the vessel when delivered will meet and hopefully exceed all expectations. Thereafter it will transfer seamlessly into the operational management side and charter.“We’re a small, boutique company that prides itself on its expertise. As a rule of thumb, around eight to 10 weeks of charter should cover the direct operating costs with anything more than that contributing to capital costs and thereafter profit.”&nbsp;Using the services of a broker to contract a new build at a yard is highly beneficial for a buyer. As a company we will probably build many yachts at the yard, whereas a private buyer might only build one. So, a yard will often offer preferential terms to a buyer using a well-respected broker.
