The owners of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7878" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ONE15 Brooklyn Marina (Company)">One°15 Brooklyn Marina</a>, situated in Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York City, have applied for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in response to overwhelming debt. This is reported by the specialised database ‘<a href="https://businessbankruptcies.com/cases/one-edge-marina-finance-company-llc" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Business Bankruptcies</a>’ which used data from United-States Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER). The application, filed on 26 September 2024, encompasses not only the marina but also its associated Estuary restaurant and sailing club, all under the ownership of the same holding entities.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331041/image/large-41069672ff930cbb2ceee0128653db8f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331041">Situated beside Pier 5 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, the marina serves as a vital hub for water access, accommodating a diverse array of vessels from superyachts up to 91-metres in length to historic boats and small sailboats. It also provides a variety of boating programs including a sailing school, children's activities, and kayaking lessons for the community. The marina is managed by the Singapore-based SUTL Group and owned by SUTL Investments Pte, according to <a href="https://businessbankruptcies.com/cases/one-edge-marina-finance-company-llc" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Business Bankruptcies</a>.&nbsp;This decision follows a prolonged period of financial difficulties, which originated from extended delays in construction, and ongoing operational challenges at the marina, reports <a href="https://businessbankruptcies.com/cases/one-edge-marina-finance-company-llc" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Business Bankruptcies</a>. Local media have attributed many of the marina’s structural issues to inherent challenges at its location. Situated at the strategic intersection of New York Bay, the East River, and tidal flows from the Hudson River, the site has consistently posed difficulties for marina operations. Even before the development of Brooklyn Bridge Park, this area was historically known as a problematic location, due to complications with pier construction and the need for effective wave abatement.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331042/image/large-36078af544beed36645b734d9c586078.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331042">By filing for Chapter 11, the owners aim to reorganise their debts while maintaining ongoing operations. <a href="https://businessbankruptcies.com/cases/one-edge-marina-finance-company-llc" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Business Bankruptcies</a> data shows that the court has sanctioned the joint administration of the bankruptcy cases for the marina, the restaurant, and the sailing club, allowing them to continue operating as separate entities. Led by principal Estelle Lau and represented by the law firm Kirby Aisner &amp; Curley, the ownership group seeks to negotiate with creditors and secure a buyer for the marina and its associated enterprises. Both of the yachts are 52-metres, under 500 GT, which I think is the current sweet spot for the market and we aim to begin metal cutting at the end of this year, with the first yacht exhibited at the Monaco Yacht Show 2027. Our portfolio has significantly increased over the last year, now including superyachts from renowned shipyards around the world, such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/955" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gulf Craft (Company)">Gulf Craft</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, and others. Initially focused on yacht management, the company has rapidly expanded into charter and sales. We are currently enlarging our Sales and Charter teams and are actively developing our New Build services. We are overseeing a major project and are in negotiations for a larger vessel, with additional plans to construct a large explorer catamaran.Additionally, there was a significant change in the organisational structure last year when I formed a partnership with Yousuf Al Hashimi during a yacht charter in the Caribbean. This unique and distinctly different experience makes it difficult to compare the two regions directly.However, in terms of the amount of yachts in the region, I believe we will soon be able to compete with the Caribbean. As a result of continued government investments in marine infrastructure, such as those in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7371" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="NEOM (Company)">NEOM</a> in Saudi Arabia and that ongoing in the UAE, it is expected that more yacht owners will choose to station their vessels in the region, thereby increasing demand for quality yacht management services in the region.Moreover, there is an increasing need for high-end maintenance facilities in the Middle East to support the anticipated rise in superyachts. While such facilities are currently limited, regional authorities are actively working to address this gap. Recent updates to yacht charter regulations in the UAE demonstrate a commitment to advancing the yachting industry. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix</a>, alongside other key local stakeholders, has been a leading advocate for these developments.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331235/image/large-19425dc3700cb1849fe75cd8bbf4e154.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331235">How many of your clients are Middle Easterners versus Europeans, and how do the preferences of your Middle Eastern clients differ from those of Western clients?As for the demographic of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix Yacht Management</a>'s clientele, our client base is currently evenly split between Middle Easterners and Europeans. However, we are increasingly focusing on the domestic UAE market.&nbsp;This dynamic is evolving as the Middle East is a booming region. Over the last 10 years, the region has completely transformed. You can see ultra luxury developments in the marinas, hotels, restaurants plus then the rich array of museums and large international events. This change is not limited to Dubai; there has been significant infrastructure development in the rest of UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. This of course affected the regional yacht market.&nbsp;Previously, the largest superyachts (over 90-metres) were predominantly owned by Middle Eastern clients, while those ranging from 40 to 80-metres were more commonly chartered. Now, with regional developments and changes in marine law, more Middle Eastern clients are purchasing yachts in this size range. Moreover, two additional guest staterooms are situated on the lower deck starboard side.&nbsp;“We split the lower deck into two areas,” Bart Bouwhuis, co-creative director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a>, explains. “Both sections have separate access and stairways allowing service to continue unimpeded across all decks, and guests to enjoy their time together in privacy. The Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) now intends to self-fund its planned marina, according to local media sources. This newly announced plan moves away from the earlier proposal, to build on land through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/301383/image/large-60a90e3bd064fe7a4c5f69f5dc3ef4ea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/301383">Initially, MPA sought to develop and manage the marina at the port's Princess Dock via a PPP for 45 years. Despite two tender processes, with adjusted bid terms, the efforts failed to attract bidders. In the local press, Rajiv Jalota, chairman of Mumbai Port Authority, stated: "We are not developing it on land; we are developing it in the sea. Studies are at a very advanced stage and clearances should come through." As a stakeholder, we hope that the Mumbai Port Authority provides a sufficient land parcel alongside the marina for the development of world-class facilities and amenities. It is also essential that the marina maintains a 5-metre all-time draft to accommodate yachts over 30-metres in length."Unique geography and history&nbsp;The proposed site lies within the historic confines of Princess Dock and Victoria Dock, established in the 18th century during British rule. Facing limitations in expanding its cargo handling due to the typical evacuation challenges of a city-based port, MPA has opted to repurpose the waterfront for leisure and urban uses. This aligns with broader plans to regenerate Mumbai's waterfront.South Mumbai, where most of the port's land is situated, is one of the nation's most valuable locales. The planned marina is set to cater to a significant influx of luxury yachts. Currently, despite India's extensive coastline exceeding 7,500 kilometres, there are very few facilities for mooring luxury yachts. The existing infrastructure forces yacht owners to use inconvenient and inadequate makeshift arrangements near iconic sites like the Gateway of India.Attracting more yachts to the Mumbai areaJitendra Rami, Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1372" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="West Coast Marine (Sea Waif) (Company)">West Coast Marine Yacht Services Pvt Ltd</a> and M2M Ferries, stated that the Mumbai Port Authority has already conducted the first round of stakeholder consultations, which I attended, for the marina. Planned for a location outside the Princess and Victoria Docks, this marina will be situated adjacent to Cross Island, directly in front of the docks. The MPA is expected to conduct another round of stakeholder consultations soon. The establishment of a marina in Mumbai has been a longstanding demand of the industry, and we hope that this project will soon come to fruition.The development aims to transform the local economy by enhancing the area's appeal to tourists and yacht owners. With around 200 leisure boats typically moored near the Gateway of India due to the lack of dedicated marina facilities, the new marina aims to provide a world-class berthing option, equipped with comprehensive marina services. They also have a net profit of €60.5 million, which amounts to a growth margin of 6.1 percent from last year. The first phase of the quay is being built and the process of making 22 hectares of extra land is still ongoing but taking shape quickly.&nbsp;The team will enter phase two, building docks one, two and three next month, with completion expected by June 2023. Despite being founded in 1945 in Limite sull’Arno to build and repair smaller yachts, by 1956 the yard was moved to Darsena Pisana as it had started signing projects too large for its facility.&nbsp;The shipyard has had an illustrious history, delivering more than 700 yachts &nbsp;– the largest of which being the 43.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1655" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cap de Quers43.6m (143'1&quot;)Cantieri di Pisa2006">Cap de Quers</a>. I love boats and have professionally sailed for many years, competing from the Optimist to the Maxi yacht regattas – I’ve had a long collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/758" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="North Sails (Company)">North Sails</a>.&nbsp;In 1992 I met Luca Bassani, founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a>, and worked alongside him for 20 years. The brand was missing a refit yard in Italy, so I bought and founded one (WS Shipyard) in Savona. It's been very successful. I then moved into consultancy around 2010, working with clients both in yachting and shipping.&nbsp;I was working with some major players – it was a nice life. But around a year and a half ago, Enrico Gennasio (president and owner of the Alfagomma group) told me he was going to buy <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>, asking if I wanted to work with him.&nbsp;A great opportunity. I immediately got to work, spending time with naval architects and exterior designers, dreaming up the best yachts we can bring to market. The shipyard had great energy, and a number of great international designers came to visit us. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259110/image/large-dc2f2a0d48808d14b563a945716e4215.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259110"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>&nbsp;is back building yachts. Do these new models reflect a new vision?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> is an iconic brand. We’re not here to change the rules, we want to rewrite them. The yachts that we’ve started to build are different from what <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> traditionally did. But we also want to be different from our competitors.&nbsp;Rather than starting from aesthetics, our primary interest is weight. We want to save as much weight as possible, to build and deliver some of the lightest yachts on the market. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> yachts are fast, agile, and incredibly sleek and all have shallow drafts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/258737/image/large-8913f6c24d1edd5383a600b3c775dbbb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/258737">The 25m 80 Veloce – the first&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>&nbsp;yacht since 2012 – is scheduled for delivery this year. Can you say a few words about her?&nbsp;The 80 Veloce is our first yacht. We wanted to build something that embodies our new philosophy – and she’s crazy fast! She’ll be equipped with three 2,000 horsepower V12 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1441" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MAN (Company)">MAN</a> engines that deliver a top speed in excess of 60 knots. The series has been well received and we already have clients signed for the second and third hull.&nbsp;She’s not for everyone though – which is why we’re about to present a Gran Turismo edition to the market. The 80 GT is based on the same lightweight hull yet with a more family-focused design. She’ll also be equipped with two engines, not three. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/258738/image/large-72d27a22a4c507d152fcab6398958f5e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/258738"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>&nbsp;also presented the new Akhir series. Has this model line been well received and are you considering building on speculation?&nbsp;The Akhir series is a new design for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> which is offered in three sizes: a 31-metre, a 37-metre and a 42-metre flagship. Much like the 80 Veloce the idea is to keep the weight down as much as possible. The series has a contemporary design and we’re in talks about whether to build the first unit on speculation – it might happen, but I can’t confirm either way at this moment in time. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259105/image/large-50b2769c2995a007591094d39d092014.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259105">Why is weight such an important topic for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>?Any sailor will tell you the importance of weight – they just will. I’ve personally sailed around the world on some of the world’s most important and fastest boats, and every time their core attribute was weight. However, shipyards and designers rarely consider weight early on when they’re planning a new project. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> does things differently, it’s my absolute credo. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259106/image/large-848f31e2855eb67f5df5c8156f48eba3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259106">Choosing to build light implies a commitment to delivering yachts with shallow drafts. How else are you trying to maximise this across all your series?&nbsp;We’ll equip both the 80 Veloce and Gran Turismo series with waterjets. Waterjets are the safest way to arrive at high speeds and they can go in really shallow waters. And to overcome issues of sucking up sand (a particular issue in Miami), we’ve added a special sea chest. It's a simple, not crazy innovation.&nbsp;Coming from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a>, I of course have taken inspiration from their model lines and I especially like what they’ve done with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> 118 Power – the James Bond yacht. But I’ve also listened closely to my friend and naval architect, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Marco Arnaboldi (Company)">Marco Arnaboldi</a>, who designed many fast boats, including the CDP80 veloce. He’s one of the best in the world when it comes to waterjet technology. We decided to follow him on our design – there isn’t anyone better! <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259100/image/large-e738a900d681e7e9b00f4677cfafd4fd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259100">An automotive designer and America’s Cup engineer collaborating on your designs. How did this come about?It’s simple. We want speed and performance, so why not bring in the best? A typical motor yacht goes around 18 to 20 knots, yet a high-performance America’s Cup sailing yacht reaches speeds of up to 40 knots – it’s a big difference, even if you factor out the foils. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> we want to use this knowledge to study the possibilities of reducing as much drag as possible with our yachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260834/image/large-1241be498043c5a2ee330d299e207c7c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260834">For the past 18 months,&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>&nbsp;has focused exclusively on refits. Why?&nbsp;We weren’t ready for new builds until now, we needed to establish ourselves. When we took over <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>, it hadn’t been operating for 10 years. We invested around €1.5 million to renovate the facilities and in the past 18 months, we have worked on 27 yachts, which brings a good level of return for the business: building capital and our reputation.&nbsp;Working as a refit yard has also put us in direct communication with many captains, which is great for our Research &amp; Development. For the past 18 months, we’ve been learning the trouble points and how to build a perfect yacht, designed for the captain.&nbsp;We’ve continued to invest and we’ll soon announce a new facility.&nbsp;

The 114.2-metre superyacht Project Cosmos has been technically launched from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>’s facility in Rendsburg, Germany. This is the first time we’ve seen the superyacht, otherwise known as Project 13759. The technicians working there spend a lot of time messing about with yellow models in towing tanks. But they also do much more, such as training crews using kinematic motion machines that can be programmed to simulate virtually any kind of sea conditions and navigation scenarios. Or testing emerging fuels and power systems in a prototype engine room of the future to find the ideal balance between sustainability and efficiency.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263165/image/large-7434d1499f8ec2db97c34096042c4a81.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263165">And then there’s additive manufacturing. Since becoming more readily available and affordable 3D printing captures fewer headlines, but it’s swiftly being integrated into everyday industrial workflows – including the yachting sector – and it’s safe to say we will see much more of it in the future.
