It provides a safe storage space for the delicate helicopter, protecting it from seawater spray and the elements. The yacht is currently undergoing a major refit. I’m not normally a brave person when it comes to such life-changing decisions as this, but I knew I could still rely on the support of the people around me. I will continue to collaborate with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/65" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nuvolari Lenard (Company)">Nuvolari Lenard</a>, and we are currently engaged on some very exciting projects. But starting my own studio allows me to also branch out and work with other major designers as well. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/73477/image/large-c07b142a956e019b98afd0f162227290.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/73477">Can you share insights into your design philosophy and how it may have evolved over your career?I believe that design is an evolution and that it should be undertaken together with the client. I am a firm believer in the power of sketching and using my hands to tell my story, it is the purest and most immediate way of translating thoughts into visuals. When I first started there was no technology, so you had to create and build every one of your designs with your hands. All the advances in rendering technologies have unfortunately created the tendency to short-cut these essential steps, which is why it is so important to me to still be able to produce these hand-drawn sketches. By creating these sketches by hand, my vision first starts on a page before your eyes, and then it is replicated as a rendering. Our studio still provides the latest generation with renders, but in due time.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179965/image/large-52b83a5fbee5806dd85815f801d758d8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179965">How do you approach the balance between aesthetics and functionality in your yacht designs?The functionality of a yacht interior is a given, you can’t have a beautiful yacht without functionality. To be able to do this, you need to understand the way a yacht will be used, not just by the guests, but also by the crew. I like to sit down with the owners and share every moment of my creativity with them to discuss and make sure they are on this journey with you. &nbsp;I’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing people and create something that is both fabulous and functional. By sitting down and talking with the client to see what will work, you begin to understand the compromise that needs to be made and can become flexible with your design to build something beautiful. The interior is the primary touch-point for our clients, aesthetics plays a huge role, and together with a first-class interior outfitter, even the most intricate details can be 100 percent functional.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/56548/image/large-aa4ca76fe18c63473107ea7f2a9b36df.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/56548"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/51084/image/large-d5c2dc3ed6d2dd4b509917ee64c9bb24.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/51084">When collaborating with clients, how do you ensure their vision is translated into the final design while maintaining your creative input?As mentioned above, we like to create endless sketching sessions, in order to get closer and closer to the client’s vision. You have to understand that not all clients have owned a yacht before, and younger clients may have only chartered before and are not familiar with how the process works. When building a yacht, you have to go through a build process to not only make sure it moves and floats, but interacts with the technology and environment onboard. You have to be able to make the client's vision become a reality, so it's important that you all work together. My formation in architecture has taught me the principles of creating spaces, which can then be adapted to the client’s taste. It was my first time designing the interior of a yacht and although I was unsure, I knew that the owner’s suite, bathroom and saloon were the most important areas! Thankfully they gave me free reign and they still have pictures of my designs. I grew up in a creative background with the dream at first of wanting to be a ballerina! However, my brother and I were like sponges when it came to anything creative, and we absorbed everything we were taught. When I studied architecture I learnt a lot about understanding spaces and how you have to fill the space, and this has helped me with my designs. I get immense joy from the fact that I have followed my passion and made a good career out of it. I have made mistakes at times, and I have followed roads that have led to nowhere, but I have learnt from them. If I look at the big picture of myself as a designer, I have been very efficient in getting to where I am now – this is what makes me proud.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/257508/image/large-4ac20baaf7c90155b5ee3dc8506c0661.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/257508">With the superyacht industry constantly evolving, what trends or innovations do you foresee influencing the design landscape, and how do you plan to stay at the forefront of these developments?There is a lot of competition nowadays to create unique and innovative yachts, however, every project is different and every project is a new challenge. I was very lucky when I started out, that I worked for such a noble and prestigious brand, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/65" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nuvolari Lenard (Company)">Nuvolari Lenard</a>. There has been a rise in more people wanting open spaces onboard, with additions such as large windows and doors. I think it is important to merge the interior and exterior spaces onboard yachts, to bring back the connection between nature and the sea. Moving forward, yachts will be able to travel further in full safety, and living onboard for extended times is a concept that is embraced, especially by the younger generation. Clients are no longer looking for a holiday home that will be used several times a year, but instead a home to be lived in for longer periods of time. This means that we need to be looking for ways to extend their vision of wellbeing, with the use of open spaces and sustainable materials. They want to feel comfortable onboard and the image of living onboard a palace is something that is not always a priority now. My clients enjoy the same sensation when we spend time here together, which ends up in very fruitful design sessions. As I mentioned before, sustainability is important to me, so I am already implementing more sustainable materials into my designs. Being located in Venice also helps me to build a beautiful relationship with local artisans to source the best materials for the job. The interior design mirrors the customisation philosophy inherent in the yachts, notably through the utilisation of high-quality materials like fine leather, wood, and marble. Every area is uniquely tailored, with meticulous attention given to each detail, ranging from handrails to the presentation of model boat display cases.The Ancona shipyard, which covers a total surface area of over 80,000 square-metres, is designed for the construction of pleasure vessels up to 90-metres in length. These modern high-tech sheds all feature state-of-the-art air-extraction, compressed-air and centralised technical-gas systems, heating and power-generation systems, and two overhead cranes for handling and installing materials on board.&nbsp;The stretch of water that opens out in front is a unique space, a gateway to the Adriatic and a private tourist marina to full effect. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/159" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burgess (Company)">Burgess</a> recently refreshed its business strategy by setting up a dedicated new-build sales team under the guidance of Ed Beckett, naval architect and partner, and Peter Brown, senior partner and sales broker. We sat down with them at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2022">Monaco Yacht Show</a> to find out more and began by asking why they had felt the need to take a new approach.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/296014/image/large-70c2a0194fabacbb68867b02202b9a64.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/296014">Peter Brown: We’ve been involved – both by good fortune and design – in big and exciting new builds like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5967" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dilbar156.0m (511'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2016">Dilbar</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4638" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azzam180.61m (592'7&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2013">Azzam</a>, Lady S and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5963" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bravo Eugenia109.0m (357'7&quot;)Oceanco2018">Bravo Eugenia</a>, from a technical project management viewpoint, but also during the commercial discussions about build price, choosing a designer and the shipyard, and so on. Over the years it’s become increasingly obvious to us that the commercial and the technical side have to go hand in hand and that any technical decision you make almost always has an effect on the commercial side, and vice-versa. During Covid we had the opportunity to sit down and review our processes and we made the conscious decision to funnel all new-build enquiries through a dedicated sales team. It might seem an intangible shift, but for us it’s seismic. Increasingly our clients want us to guide them from cradle to grave, and this is just part of that journey.&nbsp;Can you give me a specific example of how that might make a difference?PB: We’re currently involved in a very big project now where the variations to the contract regarding the luxury interior are huge. I mean, were talking numbers that are the same as building a 70-metre, and that’s just the interior. That is a whole new negotiation in itself and the discussions about materials, suppliers and installation are so closely bound together that the technical and commercial decisions have to be made together. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/121449/image/large-c45a2711ee19059fce6fc3c41d23af64.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/121449">So you’re basically talking about a team that provides a closer connection between the sales and technical departments?Ed Beckett: Yes, it’s about working more effectively and collaboratively as a unit from the start to plot the best route through to contract. However good our engineers and technicians, they are not necessarily the best people to plan that route, or manage client expectations. And although we have some terrific brokers who know their clients inside out, they don’t know the technical details, or nuances of certain shipyards or designers so well.&nbsp;PB: I think the industry had opened itself up for criticism because there has been a perception that for a commission a broker will take a client to a shipyard and they might know the market, the operational costs, the charter revenue or the importance of resale value, but they have less understanding of the intricacies of the build process, the decisions that have to be made and the additional costs on top of the contract price: the risks, basically. We have all that knowledge in-house and we have to make it work better for our clients and for us. As a company we need to be more adept at putting our best foot forward in every single new construction enquiry.&nbsp;We hear about the projects that go through but not about those that fall by the wayside. What is the most common reason why a new-build project does not proceed?EB: There are plenty of reasons, some of them quite intangible. Success might be a question of having the right people in the room at the right time having the right conversation, but you’re trying to change it from luck and good fortune to skill and knowledge. It’s a very specialist thing to build a superyacht and there’s no substitute for experience and expertise.PB: Mismanagement of expectations probably, and the level of risk – commercial and technical. At the end of the day, our job is to mitigate those risks and make sure the client is paying the right price for the right product, and that it does what he or she wants it to do.&nbsp;EB: And provide opportunity. Because we hear about a boat that might be coming to the market mid-build, or a new-build slot might suddenly become available. And as soon as that happens we can move on that information, whereas before our focus was less targeted and calculated.&nbsp;PB: For example, I had a client last year who loved the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> Oasis, but wasn’t prepared to wait three or four years for it. I happened to know there was one in construction for sale and he took delivery last July. Ed and his team took over and tweaked the specs to suit the client; it was a perfect example of how the team can work together. &nbsp; <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/52533/image/large-9d70623f408cb401d48970c47b55cbb1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/52533">Does this mean the pair of you are now only focused on new-build sales?Ed: I’m looking to pull out of the day-to-day running of new-builds that may take 3-4 years in order to follow new projects from the initial enquiry and developing the concept up to the point of contract, then while providing a degree of support to contracts post contract predominantly circling round and starting again. During that pre-contract phase the Burgess project manager will become more and more integrated.so he can then carry it through to completion. The pre-contract phase is critical, because if you get the fundamentals wrong the project is not going to work.&nbsp;PB: I wear two hats because I have to keep my knowledge of the market up to date. Clients invariably want to know what their options are, which also means considering how the asset might depreciate and what it will be worth in five years. So I’m driving new-build sales together with the rest of the team –&nbsp;Ed, Sean Bianchi and Eleonora Pitasso –&nbsp;but I like to keep a foot in the pre-owned yacht market as well.Some builders offer brokerage houses Central Agency rights for new-builds. Would you consider that?PB: I think with new-build CAs there’s a danger of being seen as more of a dealer and we want to preserve our independence. Strong relationships with a yard is one thing; an exclusive agreement is another and that doesn’t reflect our ethos. It can become a slippery slope because other shipyards are then much more reticent about giving out information you might need to service your clients. I think if the industry is open to criticism it’s where commissions are being paid and value not being added, and that’s what we want to avoid. Everyone has to be clear about their responsibilities and our loyalty is to the success of the project.

In 2020, the family-run engineering firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Iacomelli (Company)">Iacomelli</a> changed hands for the first time in its 60-year history when American businessman Chris Bizzio took over the helm. Based in Pistoia, Tuscany, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Iacomelli (Company)">Iacomelli</a> is a key supplier of steel carpentry and engineering to the yachting industry. We caught up with Chris to find out how he has navigated taking over a well-respected Italian firm, tripled the company’s turnover and reinvigorated production workflow.&nbsp;What motivated you to take over&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Iacomelli (Company)">Iacomelli</a>&nbsp;in 2020 in your first experience of the superyacht sector?I worked for over 25 years in both the consulting and fashion business, but always as a director or CEO. Other than having been on a yacht, I knew very little about the superyacht sector. At around 50 years old I told myself I should try the entrepreneurial side of working as both my grandparents were entrepreneurs and my father had his own business. A lawyer friend of mine told me that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Iacomelli (Company)">Iacomelli</a> was looking to sell. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Iacomelli (Company)">Iacomelli</a> had a generational issue as the children already had their own career paths and none of them wanted to work in the company, so it was destined to be shut down. Fortunately, I was able to step in. I found a company rich in craftsmanship, know-how, and much goodwill in the industry. I was able to use my experience acquired in areas such as supply chain and business development. Since I joined the company our sales have grown three-fold. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295945/image/large-2c6001f6c4ae804b12aa122692b22fe1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295945">How have you navigated the changing landscape in the sector, particularly with Italian shipyards buying up key suppliers?Our strategy is to focus more towards handmade custom products. The expertise we have in matching metal carpentry with electronics or hydraulics and giving the customer a turnkey solution is almost unmatched in the industry. We strive to develop unique solutions that best answer our customers’ needs. I see that shipyards are taking over key suppliers, but after a while these suppliers stop innovating because they are absorbed by the “system”. We are free to explore different aspects of our business and to find out-of-the-box solutions. Some may think the share of the pie is getting smaller, but when you’re able to find bespoke solutions for your customers, you have a new market open to you.&nbsp;How have you adapted to the cultural and business differences as an American owner taking over an Italian company?Well, let’s say it’s like “rigour meets creativity”. Obviously, my background brings to the table rigour, processes, budgets, P&amp;L, cost controls etc. but then I must match this with Italian design, creativity, craftsmanship, unstoppable searching for solutions, and the ability to develop different paths to the same result. As an American I view things as the glass being “half full”, while some Italians often take the “glass half empty” perspective. I try to navigate between these two assessments. It’s not always easy and certainly challenging. To change a company culture like that of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Iacomelli (Company)">Iacomelli</a>, which has been around for over 60 years, is not something you do overnight, in fact my approach is to demonstrate with facts that sometimes there are better ways of doing things. Italians are not afraid to express their emotions, even at work. And meetings can sometimes appear to turn into heated debates. It’s important to consider this as constructive conflict that will help everyone work more effectively and build stronger relationships of trust.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295944/image/large-275eaad79fbf191b1124a30c290ac7b2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295944">Are there any specific strategies you want to implement to ensure the company's survival and growth?I think for us the path is to give the customer custom turnkey solutions. Our products are made by hand unlike our competitors, most of whom use machines. This way of working adds to production times, but the result is a higher quality and higher functioning products. Today’s shipyards are pushing the development and innovation to their suppliers, and we need to meet that challenge. In <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Iacomelli (Company)">Iacomelli</a> since I took over, we have invested over €900,000 in innovation, but we also have to offer shipyards new or pioneering products that can involve a mix of materials to solve, for instance, an issue of weight. My plan is to grow – in sales, in efficiency and in the goodwill our customers have towards us.&nbsp;Are there any steps you have taken to strengthen and secure the supply chain for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Iacomelli (Company)">Iacomeli</a>'s operations?One area we are working on is to give our suppliers access to immediate payments, so by working with us we can address immediately the issue of giving the supplier the necessary working capital to fulfill our orders. &nbsp;In essence we work as a bank for our suppliers. &nbsp;Another area is visibility. We try to give our suppliers visibility in the mid-term, the so-called “demand forecasting”, so that they see and understand what is ahead for them in the future. The third area is lifetime value. If you are a supplier and work with us, over time your lifetime value will grow as our relationship continues as we like to build on our relationships over a long period. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295946/image/large-5fbd2c3349d9f4d1ab09904a50efd24d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295946">Are there any plans to diversify&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Iacomelli (Company)">Iacomeli</a>'s client base or expand into new markets?&nbsp;I would love to grow internationally, especially in northern Europe, but unfortunately Italian companies don’t have a great reputation in an international field. Sure, there are some great Italian companies, and our design and creativity are outstanding, but if you dig a little deeper, issues such as reliability, deliveries, willingness to serve the customer, language, all come into play, so I get a lot of push-back from international customers as they are reluctant to partner with us. It's difficult to change this mindset but I won’t give up trying. &nbsp;Regarding our expansion strategy I would love to branch out in the superyacht sector.
