Yacht Solutions has just finished erecting and shrink wrap scaffolding over SY Douce France - a 42 metre catamaran in Bangkok. This is the first time to fully enclose a superyacht in shrink wrap in Thailand and this new service enables Yacht Solutions to create a climate-controlled environment to facilitate large yacht painting and refitting projects. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/143121/image/large-782ebb3350c5b3ee3e7b6c27aeb9f116.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/143121">Responding to the need for more international standard superyacht refit facilities in the Asian region - from owners of superyachts based in Asia but also visiting yachts from Europe -Yacht Solutions is now offering shrink wrap superyacht tenting. SY Douce France was brought from Phuket to Bangkok to have extensive paint work and mechanical repair work undertaken. In preparation for this project, the Yacht Solutions’ team was trained by Atlantic Shrink Wrapping Inc. from Washington DC, one of the top shrink wrapping installation companies in the US. Simon Twist the operations director for Yacht Solutions and project manager of the Douce France refit commented, “The only way to create the perfect environment for Douce France was to erect a 45m x 20m x 10m shrink wrapped tent around her. This offered exceptional protection against environmental factors including rain, sun and wind. Shrink wrap tents are now commonplace in the superyacht industry in America and Europe and so we are very happy to be pioneering superyacht shrink wrap tenting here in Thailand.” Shrink wrap is a polyethylene plastic that is formulated to shrink when heat is applied to it. It then forms a tight seal to whatever it is wrapped around or secured to. In this case it was the scaffolding. The shrinking process makes the plastic stronger, allowing it to withstand weather and other elements. Shrink wrapping provides many benefits to superyacht project managers, such as not being dictated by weather, added security from theft, protecting yachts from external contaminants and also because it can be made airtight it can be vented to provide a temperature-controlled work environment. <img src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/143122/image/large-0ee991aebd12da0f200d30bfe4c6b1ff.jpg" alt="" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/143122">Gareth Twist, the managing director of Yacht Solutions comments that “we have been in the marine refit and repair business in Thailand for 12 years and so now offering a superyacht shrink wrapping service seems a natural progression for Yacht Solutions. The superyacht industry in Asia is growing and recent trends show that there has been a year on year increase in the number of superyachts either in the region or transiting through and by offering this service to international standards we believe will attract more vessels to Thailand all year round for refits, conversions and paintwork.” Mr Twist adds that “with this shrink wrapping ability we are able to compete with the European yards but with the distinct advantage of a lower labour cost base. Our unique combination ensures international standards are maintained while owners receive exceptional value for money and service due to the efficiencies of operating out of Thailand.” The tent took 7 days to create. Once the scaffolding was erected, the plastic was placed and the pieces were welded together. The plastic was then meticulously cut around the masts and the cables supporting the masts. Each cut was then sealed back together and reinforced. The final step of the project was to put a skirt on the bottom of the structure to meet the ground. The shrink wrapped structure was then fitted with intake and exhaust fans and air conditioning. She features a spacious interior, able to accommodate as many as 12 guests in six staterooms, with a main deck master suite with a walk-in wardrobe, a private lounge, and office.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272106/image/large-5a76a5f8b8e6c445d80b11909753d147.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272106"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272104/image/large-e8159e04cc70695c38d88ab21087863d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272104">The additional staterooms are located on the lower deck, all featuring ensuite bathrooms. Top features of her interior are her spacious main saloon with a dining room, a bar, a hair dress room with a massage area, and gym area. Her decks feature two al fresco dining areas on both the bridge deck and the sun deck, various lounge seating areas, a jacuzzi, and a swim platform to her stern.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272101/image/large-1301d790bfd5e845dde1514efe9fea43.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272101">Performance-wise, Bash is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and powered by Wärtsilä Nohab 12V25 engines giving her top speeds of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 13 knots. Launched in 1923 under the name Wildfire, the 32-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Herreshoff</a> sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> is steeped in a century's worth of history. Celebrating 100 years on the water this year, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> has sailed the world and holds many secrets and stories beneath her decks.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271313/image/large-7264148a82ffefca5a6f7b315df86b4e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271313">The Herreshoff family heritage spans back over 150 years when blind boat builder John Brown Herreshoff went into partnership with his younger brother, Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, to start the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Herreshoff Manufacturing Company</a>.John dedicated his life to yacht carpentry in a workshop in the small town of Bristol, Rhode Island. With the help of their father, Charles Frederick, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Herreshoff (Company)">Herreshoff Manufacturing Co</a>. was created and added to the history of naval construction.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271315/image/large-2a764787faf7743f4dbb99080dab7a95.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271315">The company grew in size over the years, and alongside his brothers Nathanael and James Herreshoff, the family brought many boats to life, including the legendary 1903 schooner <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4977" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ingomar53.88m (176'9&quot;)GraafShip">Ingomar</a>. John passed away in 1915, and Nathanael Herreshoff took the helm, which led to the creation of the steel schooner Wildfire.Known as Project 891, Wildfire was constructed in 1922 and launched in 1923. Wildfire was commissioned by Charles Hardy, commodore of the New York Yacht Club for a cost of $76,000, which is around $1,348,280 in today’s valuation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271314/image/large-abf0aab29ca7e0c9a8efc56d89a48556.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271314">Wildfire was launched with a 20.5-feet beam, an almost 4-metre draft, and an overall length of 95 feet (29-metres). The impressive schooner won regattas and tournaments, including the Schooner Cup in 1924.In 1949, Wildfire entered the Brazilian waters after being purchased by Jorge Bhering de Matos in the United States. She was then sold to Dircea Fortouta, an industrial entrepreneur, who christened her <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a>– meaning a daring, bold woman who is ready for any challenge.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271318/image/large-5f0e71067010a50452c710779dfd7954.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271318"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> spent 45 years in Brazil, in the Guanabara Bay located in Southeast Brazil in the state of Rio de Janeiro were she welcomed royalty such as the now King Charles III of the United Kingdom, and celebrities such as Elvis Presley, Brazilian music artist Billy Blanco, actress Rita Hayworth and Former United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.&nbsp;Over the years, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> underwent renovations which affected her overall appearance and design, but thankfully not her charm. After the death of her owner, the yacht was taken to the city of Santos, Brazil to her new owner Auro Mourandrade.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271316/image/large-517766f904e987198966efa6270603ee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271316">In the 1990s, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1180" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCP Yachts (Company)">MCP Yachts</a> owned by naval engineer Manoel Chaves, were enlisted to begin her restoration. The 1922 schooner received a new teak deck and interior renovations and in 1999 she was sold to a group of Asian businessmen, where she returned to Rio de Janeiro.However, due to a lack of maintenance care, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> almost sank in Guanabara Bay and was neglected for almost two years, leading to holes and rust forming on her steel hull and superstructure. But in 2002, Auro Mourandrade and Gilberto Miranda bought Atrevida as scrap metal and enlisted Manoel Chaves to take care of her restoration. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271317/image/large-6badd5ce3106318f744a3a73c6877ad0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271317">The holes she had gained over the years were first closed before she was towed from Rio de Janeiro to Santos by a fishing boat for the start of her repairs. The shipyard she was shipped to specialised in aluminium trawlers and therefore could not use the same installations for the work in carbon steel.As a result of this, a yard was reserved at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1180" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCP Yachts (Company)">MCP Yachts</a> for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> and the shipyard was in touch with the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol to find the original construction plans for Wildfire. In March 2004, a skilled team of professionals embarked on her restoration work by installing modern equipment, while maintaining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a>’s character.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271319/image/large-fc60e6933c53a85be1b3c04b206e9af8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271319">During her extensive 14 month restoration, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> gained the most up-to-date amenities, such as air conditioning, onboard computers and electronics and a new navigation system, as well as wireless bow and stern thrusters and a remote controlled sail hoisting system. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271321/image/large-da87cbbec66f07f4a4f181b2b2b7204f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271321">In tradition with the era in which she was built, her chain shock absorbers, balustrade stays, rigging system and other stainless steel items were built and engraved with her name, Atrevida. The wooden bowsprit was rebuilt in mahogany to the original Nathanael Herreshoff design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271320/image/large-eb4eb9acd6a67c6551d179b9c05c24b8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271320">Her carbon steel davits had also been damaged over the years and were replaced with a new stainless steel set with handles and winches similar to her original design. Her structural work included the closing of the deck with overlapping steel plates placed and riveted as they would have been when she was originally built.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271322/image/large-69bd93591d2b1da7d9bd618ff0342ced.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271322">The main deck houses and deck hatches of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> were rebuilt with mahogany wood that had been reclaimed from old demolished houses, as the cutting down of this wood is now forbidden. The yard also created a fibreglass auxiliary boat in the same dimensions as her original wood counterpart, with identical rudders, helm, controls and upholstery.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/270890/image/large-4d667d1fc2e366a14366fea44910e662.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/270890">Everything else onboard was repaired and rebuilt as close to her original design as possible, and her name was engraved across doors, tables and other items onboard. The historical importance of the project can be seen in the main living areas, with bevelled glass and curtains, which are the same style as she would have had when she was first built.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/270889/image/large-3b4dc602a33be0f3cd77229e3305e86a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/270889">Her interior has been finished with traditionally styled beams, crystal styled cabinets and classic upholstered seating, following her reclaimed designs. Her rigging has also been equipped with modern day technologies such as telephone and internet connections to keep guests onboard entertained and up-to-date. In April the SYT team headed to Palma, Mallorca, for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/170" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palma International Boat Show - 2023">Palma International Boat Show</a> and Superyacht Village. Originally owned by Neville Crichton, the famous businessman and motor and yacht racer from New Zealand, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miss Silver36.19m (118'9&quot;)Alloy Yachts1995">Miss Silver</a> was born from a collaboration between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/60" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alloy Yachts (Company)">Alloy</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/577" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dubois Yachts (Company)">Ed Dubois</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/61" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RWD (Company)">RWD</a>; a world-class yachting pedigree. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261798/image/large-249ab0f2b25fe4afad0e3e538abda970.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261798">Launched in 1995, the super sailing yacht has consistently validated <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/60" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alloy Yachts (Company)">Alloy</a>’s international reputation for building ferocious, regatta winner sailing yachts and was crowned with her most recent title at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/192" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="New Zealand Millennium Cup 2021">2021 Millenium Cup</a>. In 2019 the yacht changed hands for only the second time. Purchased by another Kiwi businessman, the yacht was cherished as a home-away-from-home during the pandemic, with her owners living aboard with family and cruising whenever possible.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271231/image/large-ea25d64178f2cee39dca61b4cb17ece7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271231">&nbsp;After a number of months sailing and exploring the Pacific islands, in 2021 her owner decided it was time to give the yacht a thorough makeover. While her original interior was well configured, it was also very much of its time, with panelled interiors, dark furnishings and leather sofas. She had begun to look her age and with her owner considering the sale of the yacht, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miss Silver36.19m (118'9&quot;)Alloy Yachts1995">Miss Silver</a> returned to Auckland where she was due to undergo the refit. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261800/image/large-340f0ca504cd5506f9513cc09228d35b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261800"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/60" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alloy Yachts (Company)">Alloy Yachts</a>, however, had closed its doors in 2016 due to a decreased demand for large sailing yachts and the team had been disbanded. While New Zealand has its fair share of yacht owners and certainly a very large number of sub-24-metre sailing and motor yachts, few big boat facilities survived and many of the shipwrights had pivoted careers into different sectors. Through friendships with a number of Alloy yacht owners, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miss Silver36.19m (118'9&quot;)Alloy Yachts1995">Miss Silve</a>r’s owner managed to connect with a number of the original team who’d built her back in the 1990s. He hired a shed in Auckland and brought the yacht ashore, working on the redesign with the old Alloy chief designer and unifying as many of the original team as could be found. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261793/image/large-e5912513e571bbc8d8e7a42513d07b98.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261793">“It was a brilliant experience, these guys stepping back onboard the yacht after 25 years who knew her inside and out and who had memories of working on her in their 20s and 30s,” explained the owner. “We stripped most of the original interior right out with the goal of creating a contemporary and bright aesthetic that gave her a new lease of life.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254872/image/large-38a0ef049454d04ed7f1a461b5e9a8c7.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254872">In the original design, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miss Silver36.19m (118'9&quot;)Alloy Yachts1995">Miss Silver</a> featured a lounge at the top of the companionway but its use was negligible and awkward. In the refit, the space was reconfigured and now features a small table with rounded seating area to the starboard side and a well appointed bar to the port, meaning that a chilled glass of wine is only a few feet away from the cockpit. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254874/image/large-ddc1e1795fa685e1165b1797745a4a39.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254874">The configuration of the saloon and dining area, which is situated on the lower deck amidships, has remained the same as the original, however the Asian-inspired panelling &nbsp;has been removed and replaced. They said it couldn’t be done, but Netherlands-based builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> proved everyone wrong in 1988 when they delivered <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Octopussy 43.58m (142'12&quot;)Heesen Yachts1988">Octopussy</a>, the 43.58-metre superyacht that topped the 50 knot plus barrier. Her exterior design and beach club extension have been entrusted to Miami-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/283" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luiz de Basto Designs (Company)">Luiz de Basto Designs</a> who are extending her original <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder</a> design. “We needed to work out how we could create a new hydraulic swim platform while adding weight and still meet the owner’s intended use,” stated Jake Stratmann. “This previously wasn’t possible due to the positioning of her triple 3,600 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> engines, so it was great that the owner was also keen on stability, rather than speed as our needs and expectations aligned very well.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/268503/image/large-157358b030515def750ef3489bd22533.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/268503">The refit process is underway at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6773" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Starboard Yacht Group (Company)">Starboard Yacht Group</a>, with the swim platform removed from her superstructure. Engineering has already begun to make way for all this new innovative technology and her twin 4,000 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> engines have already been ordered. For the most part, everything is going smoothly, and she is looking at a timeline of Summer 2024 for completion. The classic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> 26.60-metre sportfisher <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4664" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Catch26.54m (87'1&quot;)Feadship1984">Catch</a>&nbsp;has been relaunched after undergoing a winter refit at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> shipyard in Amsterdam which began in July 2022. The sportfisher is one of the only yachts of her kind to have been built by the Dutch shipyard, and was originally launched in 1984. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/268373/image/large-cb4831213d68878ef75118f4c18bf304.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/268373">Originally delivered as Gallant Lady, and then Patriot, the yacht underwent a major refit in Florida in 2005. During the 15 month refit, her hull was completely stripped back to bare metal, and then completely refurbished. The recent refit in Amsterdam was more modest, but her new owner spared no expense, even shipping the yacht back to her original yard.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/268371/image/large-00eb04c065fc46b3b28bf52bb9e26377.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/268371">“Acquired by a serial <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> owner last year, the yacht was in excellent condition at the time of sale, but he determined to bring her back to the Netherlands to ensure his <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> remains a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>,” says Pier Posthuma de Boer, director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> Refit and Services. “We were actually full when the owner contacted us, but we’re always proud when long-term clients bring their yachts back to us for refit work, so we adjusted our schedules and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4664" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Catch26.54m (87'1&quot;)Feadship1984">Catch</a> is now back in the water.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/268372/image/large-f1fb49f71e6bcd02ac37d2bec4e3f586.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/268372">When the yacht arrived last summer, the owner, who has long experience of refitting his other <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>s, visited the shipyard in person and a plan was developed so work could start immediately after the summer holidays under the guidance of his representative Peter Wilson of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> and designer Adam <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1974" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adam Voorhees (Company)">Voorhees</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/268369/image/large-c6b64f245afb59e589005915ae60efbc.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/268369">“It was amazing working with Peter, Adam and the owner,” adds Patrick Dekker, Project Manager Refit. “The relationship worked so well because we already knew the owner’s team and they were able to take decisions on the spot. It was a pleasurable experience all round.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/268368/image/large-296798132bfe02621c1837b317f2b1aa.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/268368">The work list included a full repaint; new teak decking on the foredeck; new teak caprail aft; revarnishing of all the exterior teak; new veneer on the main deck aft; installation of a sun awning covering the foredeck to create a lounging area; numerous interior items; technical maintenance; and upgrading of the LED lighting system. Moreover, an additional crew cabin was created that can accommodate two more crew members for a total of four (previously there was only space for two crew members before the refit). Her new interior is said to be “a new and decidedly more modern style, as well as a new level of onboard comfort”, while remaining faithful to her original interior styling, as penned by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Terence Disdale Design (Company)">Terrance Disdale Design</a>.&nbsp;The largest changes were made to the owners’ and guest staterooms, as all marble and wood elements have been overhauled and given a complete makeover. She offers accommodation for 12 guests in total and can host a further 12 crew. But the crew quarters are just a little too small for what we were looking for.“The crew has to be well looked after on my boats, they need to feel comfortable. It’s important to us that spacious, well-lit and relaxing areas need to be found in both guest and crew areas. Not only are guests travelling with us, so also are the crew. I want them to feel at home.” With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valeria44.2m (145'0&quot;)Feadship1975">Valeria</a> a no-go, David was back scouring the market for a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> that met expectations. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/196039/image/large-6c1cf1727a767970cde689a72b0858bc.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/196039"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> built 74 superyachts 40-metres or larger before the turn of the millennium, and out of those 74, only 12 are currently on the market. When these yachts are under ownership, they often stay that way. It was in fact Daan Balk, CEO and owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/434" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Balk Shipyard (Company)">Balk Shipyard</a>, who informed the owner about a potential candidate: the 1990-delivered 48.83-metre MQ2, which was lying in Croatia at the time. Balk personally joined <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TWW Yachts (Company)">TWW</a> and the owners to inspect the yacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265814/image/large-ed3bd1e3447fc1d45e4f7c135b6a2cef.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265814"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265754/image/large-ebb517a81c02f593d1b13c100bf0f087.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265754"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265756/image/large-f1cc76efab2089fa67e828788cdc9d7c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265756"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265757/image/large-08fe49bcf5c99fbc1a7a5489e9c90c33.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265757">MQ2’s timeless exterior lines, penned by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/30" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Voogt Naval Architects (Company)">De Voogt</a>, and her voluminous interior won him over. The yacht was hauled out and surveyed in Trogir, Daan Balk was a guest throughout the study and provided the owner with sound reassurances. The deal was signed in May 2021, with the owner represented by James Hall and David Westwood of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TWW Yachts (Company)">TWW Yachts</a>, and the seller John Cohen of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/322" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Merle Wood & Associates, Inc. (Company)">Merle Wood &amp; Associates</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265818/image/large-200cb86197f8907e67c59768f906ad8f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265818">But it’s hard to believe that the 50.4-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> floating in the dock was the same one he bought nearly two years ago. At the time of sale, she was shorter, had less deck space and an old-fashioned stern with small, swing doors that led into the saloon. She was also fitted with twin two tonne cranes, port and starboard. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265764/image/large-f5ef92227d044089b7c4db39a14e7644.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265764">“My tender weighs three tonnes, so those cranes had to go,” her owner explained. “I wanted to restyle the stern section, so I thought why not extend and install a larger crane on the upper aft deck. Daan Balk had left a strong impression on me. I really appreciated his efforts during my visit to Valeria and thought ‘why not take MQ2 there for the refit’.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265781/image/large-1c80402a6a79af370032a66f2a42de19.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265781"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265790/image/large-ede5c877168aec88ce91085c99c4eec2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265790"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265795/image/large-20511eb863d128051c77551f603f4fb6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265795"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265785/image/large-835f076c9e2297ee73ec09d16c4a71bd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265785">&nbsp;“There was a lot of interest in this refit from many shipyards,” Daan Balk explained. “We ended up in a neck-and-neck race against <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/86" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amico & Co. s.r.l. (Company)">Amico &amp; Co</a> The final two contenders. In the end though, we were granted the order and we signed the project right after the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2021">2021 Monaco Yacht Show</a>.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265752/image/large-2b0599b6320a23dd3d157cff20a027d2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265752">It turned out to be an extensive 16-month refit in total, with her original interiors by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/435" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Robert Knack International (Company)">Robert Knack International</a>stripped bare and everything down to general arrangement entirely redesigned. Her stern wasn’t only restyled, it was also extended by more than a metre and she now features an impressive aft cockpit, complete with a hydraulic swim platform.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265776/image/large-c7e8853bf9fc6a98904d8c2e6d43252c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265776"> “The platform is fantastic; it can be lowered below the waterline. Just think, any charter guest can get in and out of the water with it, regardless of age. It also goes the other way, and my son who’s 17 was asking how high it can go, as he wants to use the platform as a diving board – it’s possible,” he laughed.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265778/image/large-7db59ce967387b1532637f16f594ca62.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265778"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/853" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Emerald50.4m (165'4&quot;)Feadship1990">Emerald’s</a>&nbsp;naval architecture was re-engineered by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder Design</a>, and the team eked out as much as possible with this redesign. “We wanted the maximum we could, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder Design</a> drew up the plans and made it possible.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265770/image/large-09d0a99ab59be11639ea4aba37fab7cf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265770"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265765/image/large-ec6b9c7bf2d0735ca7a317536602df90.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265765">Glass sliding doors have been installed between the skylounge and upper aft deck, replacing the swingset that really was not to the family’s taste. “Look at this space,” he said, swinging his arm around the upper lounge. “Can you imagine being sat here watching Formula One? Taking pride of place forward of the sundeck is a very large Jacuzzi.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265806/image/large-e4ab38a2b432f8f5359257f7a579ec53.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265806">The owner’s wife took charge of the project, working very closely with the UK-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a> to map out and curate the perfect vessel. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a> was incredible to work with. The team is perfect and they knew exactly what we wanted, how we wanted it. They sat down with my wife and in a day they had the whole project mapped out. An amazing experience,” he said.“We wanted a yacht that was built around family use; plenty of space, lots of character and areas where we can relax to enjoy each other’s company,” her owner explained. Quite uncommon, especially for a yacht of this size, forward of the main deck is not one but two VIP suites. “When we have friends and family onboard, having a second VIP suite next to the master suite gives us more flexibility and the freedom to have our family all together, each with private space yet all on the same deck.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265816/image/large-462a9f714a58748a84e772b49ef02937.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265816"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/853" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Emerald50.4m (165'4&quot;)Feadship1990">Emerald</a> offers accommodation for as many as 12 guests: four can sleep on the main deck in the two VIP suites, and the remaining eight will find accommodation on the lower deck. Each stateroom is finished with rich dark timbers that are sophisticated and lend the spaces a calming ambiance. There is a strict harmony across the staterooms, with only the ensuites differing in style.&nbsp;“Look at this detail,” the owner proudly said, running his hand over the veined marble bathroom wall. “This one my son picked out.” The portside lower deck double stateroom features vibrant stonework, unlike anything else on the yacht. “We each picked different natural stones for the bathrooms, so each suite has a distinctive character,” he explained. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265817/image/large-ebacdecc9e7bee9249a803d7bab6394d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265817">As we walked through <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/853" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Emerald50.4m (165'4&quot;)Feadship1990">Emerald</a> the owner was most animated detailing the crew areas. “This wasn’t here before,” the owner said, pointing to a window in the galley. “My wife redesigned the galley and fitted this window. It cost me a fortune, mind.
