The first of the two yachts is the slightly larger one, by length, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5107" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Cloud39.72m (130'4&quot;)Faenoe1990">Southern Cloud</a>, that was built by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3509" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Faenoe (Company)">Faenoe Yachtvaerft</a> at Skaerbaek in Denmark in 1990.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/236154/image/large-bf3e5d31845682090c710652a1c12043.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/236154">With a length overall of 39.70-metres, a waterline length of 26.85-metres, a beam of 7.70-metres and a draft of 3.95-metres, the yacht displaces 195 tonnes. Designed by Herward A. Oehlmann and constructed under the project name Animos, the yacht was completed in 1990 as the Butterfly McQueen for an owner based in the Far East.At the time she was being described as the "World's Most Advanced Sailing Yacht", a statement that was probably true owing to the vessel's highly automated control systems. Everything from sail handling and engine controls to weighing anchor are controlled by touch-sensitive screens from Touch'n Control Systems.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/22308/image/large-beb21a1565245a75fc286e76d9a0690d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/22308">Onboard she features luxurious accommodation for twelve guests in six cherry-panelled staterooms and cabins for seven crew are provided. Engines are twin Fiat]/<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1677" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Iveco (Company)">Iveco</a> V8 diesels of 400 horsepower each, providing a maximum speed of 12 knots and a cruising speed of 10 knots. Her fuel capacity is 21,000 litres.Originally built to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1479" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Det Norske Veritas (DNV) (Company)">Norske Veritas</a> class with a GRP hull and teak-laid decks, this motorsailer has sailed extensively in the Pacific and Australasian regions over the years, as well as to other world cruising regions. The yacht today sails under the name <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5107" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Cloud39.72m (130'4&quot;)Faenoe1990">Southern Cloud</a> and is still in the Southern Ocean.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/236155/image/large-1f26a8adb5d62d41ad4cbf9e3bdf46b5.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/236155">Now let's turn to the second unique schooner that was built as Vendredi Treize at the Tecimar yard at Sainte Nazaire. Initially designed by the Danish naval architect <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2403" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="J. Ring Andersen Skibsvaerft (Company)">Jim Andersen</a> to compete in the Ostar, the British single-handed race across the Atlantic. She was the largest and fastest boat on the starting line.She was also the world's largest fibreglass sailing yacht when she was completed in 1972. Length overall was 39.13-metres with a displacement of 88 tonnes. Light winds however eventually put paid to that dream.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/4377/image/large-a2ccc5add40d8ff76b30ca58fa36bfd2.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/4377">The opportunity to acquire the yacht arose in 1992 when Jean Michel Tissier of Stardust Marine bought her with the intention of restoring the yacht and converting her into a fast luxury cruiser. However, the yacht proved uneconomical to repair and a new hull had to be moulded from the original.This new yacht would be christened Friday Star-Vendredi 13 with a luxurious interior by Jacques Pierrejean. Completed in 1994 her new length is 42.10-metres with a beam of 5.76-metres and a draft of 4.20-metres, Displacement was now 95 tonnes. Guest accommodation was now for ten guests and five crew and a cordon-bleu chef to provide exceptional cuisine. Power is provided by a single 300 horsepower <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1483" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cummins Inc. 49m superyacht 007 refloated following salvage operation in Greece

The salvage of the 49m superyacht 007 which sank in Greece last month, has now begun.

The 76.4-metre research vessel, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8372" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Petrel76.45m (250'10&quot;)Brattvaag Skipsverft AS2003">Petrel</a>, formerly owned by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has fallen on a 45-degree angle on her starboard side in a dry dock in Leith, Edinburgh. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262728/image/large-32f62e2fc0de714fc149566c8f6785ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262728">In the early morning on 22 March, emergency services were called to help assist with the casualty. The cause of the incident is still under investigation, but it is believed that strong winds played a significant role. The coastguard sent teams to the scene and the public has been asked to avoid the area of Imperial Dock. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262729/image/large-2b5c5c009a48ea0f2296f688c99d05cf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262729">The unexpected accident resulted in many people being injured, with 15 of them being taken to the hospital. We spoke with Justin Beard, Marketing and Sales Development Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Derecktor</a>, to find out a little more about this titan of American yachting. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251765/image/large-20e7c52020c060c2309484b9b543e89a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251765">What were the origins of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor Shipyards</a>&nbsp;and how has it continued after Bob Derecktor?When Bob was in high school, sometime during the 1930s, he designed a 26-foot sloop and built it in his family’s backyard in White Plains, New York – using oak for the frames, fir for the deck and pine for the mast. With the help of a friend, he sailed it to Nova Scotia for the summer.After a couple of years, Bob left college to focus on his passion. He built a 38-foot schooner and sailed it from New York to Baltimore, where he took a job at the Owens Boatyard, advancing quickly through the ranks to become foreman. Eventually returning to the New York area, he worked at the Edgar Johns Shipyard in Rye and Minnefords in City Island, building minesweepers designed to detonate underwater mines during World War II. Bob soon joined the effort himself, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in the early 1940s.&nbsp;During 1947, shortly after returning from the Navy, the young boatbuilder established Robert E. Derecktor, Inc. on Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck, New York. Surrounding himself with talented employees who would continue to grow along with the company, over the years he expanded the yard, following the ebbs and flows of the boatbuilding business — transitioning from wood to aluminium, from cruising boats to race boats, from sail to power, then to larger yachts and commercial boats.Today, four <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor</a>’s facilities span the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. from Maine to South Florida, offering vessel owners and operators everything from marina space to superyacht construction. Originally from the UK, he settled in Newport, USA, in the late 1980s and set up <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> with business partner Nigel Ingram. Outside of work, Peter enjoys cycling, sailing, motorbiking, photography and tending to his beehives.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261482/image/large-8f42f4d17c286aa23635d9c9afd0624b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261482">How did you and Nigel meet and what sparked your decision to set up a company together?&nbsp;We met in Antigua in the ‘70s and became fast friends. In 1988 I was wrapping up an America’s Cup challenge and Nigel was finishing the build of a new yacht. We started chatting about what was next. As yachts were getting larger and more complicated, we felt clients needed an advocate to represent their best interests. We also believed there should be more discipline in terms of fiscal and time-related control imposed on the build process. And after 35 years it appears there was indeed a need!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/171475/image/large-def9b7fbcd7516e5756f79bc7fc282d0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/171475"> You’re a sailor and in the past&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a>&nbsp;was best known for its sailing yacht projects, but you’re now taking on more motor yachts with brands like&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>. Was this a straightforward transition and how does your role change between sail and power?&nbsp;When one considers today’s sailing superyachts and their relative systems, they have more complications than the equivalent motor yachts. For example, both types of vessels have engines, generators, HVAC, AV/IT systems, cooking and domestic appliances, desalination and sewage treatment plants, and so on. But on a sailing yacht there are also masts, rigging, captive winches, booms, hydraulic furling and tensioning systems and appendages like lifting keels – all in a hull that is usually less voluminous than a motor yacht. So the transition from a technical standpoint is quite straightforward, although it should be noted that we have been doing motor yacht projects for many years and so they are not new territory for us.&nbsp;In terms of role differences, in the sailing yacht world there is more focus on the nuances of sailing performance, whereas on motor yachts the performance is well defined and based on engine kilowatts, propeller designs and, of course, the hull shape. The interiors, outfitting, finish and quality are equally important on every superyacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180780/image/large-1604c001b0dc9b9c1caaa60d0e99d298.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180780">What kind of decisions can you make on your own and which require the owner’s approval?&nbsp;This depends largely on the involvement and experience of the client. In many cases, we have clients that are knowledgeable and have had a string of yachts before. In those cases, the client is often closely involved and brings that experience to bear, and it can be a very collaborative affair. Where a client is perhaps building for the first time, they may need more guidance. In either case, we present them with the options available in a clear and concise manner when a decision is required and recommend the one we feel is the right choice. This gives the client the benefit of our experience and the requisite information on which to base an informed decision.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/92787/image/large-25fbaa062214a0955512eecbe552c80e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/92787">Do ‘involved’ owners make your job easier or more difficult?&nbsp;Having a client closely participate in the project typically makes it more memorable for them as they are really creating their vision. In turn, this makes it more enjoyable for the entire team. Designing and building a yacht is a terrific endeavour and may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so we strive to make it a rewarding experience for the client. We have developed great friendships with many of our clients that outlast the build process. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/68864/image/large-d01918c154c9386a1eba29b93edea26b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68864"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a>&nbsp;offers yacht construction and management services. Does it make more sense if the same agency does both?&nbsp;When we started <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> in 1988, we didn’t have a yacht management division. However, once we had a few yachts ‘under our belts’ it became abundantly clear that there was a requirement for post-construction support the and formalising that support in the form of a yacht management division was a service that yacht owners needed. As the vessel progresses from the build phase to the operational phase, having one company providing both services makes for a seamless transition. Not least because by that stage we have a long-standing relationship with the client, we know the vessel inside and out, we have all the data, drawings and manuals, and we know which design decisions were made and why.The rules and regulations surrounding vessel navigation and operation have also increased exponentially and the burden is such that captains and crew require shore-based support. Furthermore, the client benefits from the continuity <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> offers; crew inevitably come and go, but we are the common thread and institutional knowledge about the yacht and the programme. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/75757/image/large-814590a2342fc3180dd4d70ca59bd2d7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/75757">Do you bring in your own preferred suppliers and/or subcontractors for new-build projects, or is that always up to the shipyard?&nbsp;To ensure there is no perceived conflict of interest, we remain fiercely independent. However, over many years of operation we’ve developed strong relationships with quality suppliers, manufacturers and vendors and can recommend those to the shipyard. We also have real-world experience as to how the equipment performs at sea. However, it is the shipyard that has overall responsibility for the construction process and provides the warranty, so they ultimately decide which suppliers and subcontractors are the best fit and those they prefer to work with. &nbsp;What would you change about the way we work in the superyacht industry?&nbsp;The elapsed time from the first conversation to the yacht being handed over can be many years. As an industry, we are always seeking ways to be more efficient and shorten the time required to build one of these masterpieces &nbsp;while maintaining the high quality standards expected. The other challenge is how to build yachts that can operate in an environmentally friendly way. Emissions are being lowered. We need to continue that trend to protect the marine environment we all so enjoy.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217714/image/large-e37cd890a97c5e166adce7d9d371918b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217714">Beyond the technical qualifications, what are the personal attributes needed to be a successful owner’s rep?&nbsp;On the personal side, attributes such as honesty, integrity, patience and respect. Being a good listener is also profoundly important. Other key qualities include staying focused, open-minded, nimble and the ability to adapt. Managing expectations is the most challenging aspect of the job. As these projects become larger and costlier, there are many facets to consider and with sometimes differing agendas, so the ability to develop a team with members sharing a common goal, is fundamental.&nbsp;Lastly, the experience of having been to sea in a multitude of yachts in wide-ranging conditions is enormously helpful. Turkey-based builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6581" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="FDC Yachts (Company)">FDC Yachts</a> has unveiled the second model in the Aluna series, the 39-metre Aluna 127. The full displacement yacht has been developed in cooperation with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a> and can be used as a support yacht or as an expedition vessel.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263177/image/large-01bab3d60667f5d893ab6fd6e6283a79.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263177">Aluna 127 features a steel hull and aluminium superstructure with her hull and detail engineering handled by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6581" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="FDC Yachts (Company)">FDC Yachts</a>. One of her standout features is her forward-located superstructure that enables guests to enjoy an exceptionally spacious aft deck.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263179/image/large-f45fcab8e5794a86477e7f5039193406.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263179">Aluna 127 can comfortably accommodate up to 12 guests with her owners suite located on the upper deck at the bow, with a large terrace and his-and-hers ensuite bathrooms. I have had the privilege of going through them, progressively tackling different themes, from the serial production of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/560" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Canados (Company)">Canados</a> and Aprea yachts to building <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1514" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Foners41.5m (136'2&quot;)Izar2000">Foners</a>, the fastest yacht in the world built for the King of Spain without forgetting the world of superyachts for many affectionate clients, for whom in some cases I have also designed several boats.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254144/image/large-f745df6f4f0984c08ef4c436e33b4736.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254144">With the release of three superyacht concepts in as many months, can we expect any more designs this year?&nbsp;In fact, perhaps also as a reaction to the difficult Covid period we have just gone through, I am in a rich design moment and I do not rule out presenting other design solutions soon.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/24753/image/large-0fae192ab2f8d9eb43ba046a7e505dc9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/24753">Can we expect the 90m superyacht or 48m concept to be taken to build?&nbsp;For both the 90 and the 48 I worked with the requirements of a shipowner in mind; both feasibility projects are in the evaluation phase, waiting to activate the shipyard selection.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263102/image/large-080cd09835ad3d3ae6d7f8b33c703058.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263102">What led you to reimagine the lines of superyachts for the&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a>&nbsp;Jet, incorporating designs from the aviation sector?&nbsp;The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> Jet 2020 is the brainchild of Fulvio Codecasa, who called me to collaborate on his futuristic project. This remarkable three mastered schooner underwent a complete refit in 2005 and CMN Yachts have fitted her out for some serious and fast cruising. CMN are renowned for their strong composite hulls, used by the military, demonstrating her longevity and quality build.&nbsp;Yamakay's interior refit by Couëdel Hugon Design and exterior by Mark Lambard took 2 years to complete, undergoing a complete transformation into a luxury, high-performance vessel of the very best pedigree.&nbsp;Couëdel Hugon designed the interior fittings and deck space to restore her strong sailboat identity by creating a contemporary, sober and pure design.&nbsp;Yamakay sleeps 8-10 guests in 4 rooms, with two pullman beds and includes a movie server and audio throughout the yacht. Yamakay was refitted again more recently in 2014 with various upgrades and total repaint. The yacht is MCA compliant.
