<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">The Italian Sea Group</a> has published its 2022 quarterly business report, reflecting back on nine months of operations, and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">Group</a> is in excellent financial shape. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/112639/image/large-71dd2b977d22350f5c9d5439c079055c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/112639">As of 30 September 2022, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">Group</a> reports that its total revenue exceeds €210 million, up 64.6 percent compared to €127.8 million as of 30 September 2021. It also reports a gross backlog (shipbuilding and refit) equal to €983 million, with a net backlog of €566 million.&nbsp;In regards to EBITDA, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">The Italian Sea Group</a> announced it hit the €33 million mark – 89.7 percent increase compared to the same nine-month period last year.&nbsp;“The results of the first nine months of 2022 confirm a strong and constant growth, allowing TISG to position itself at the highest end of the Revenue Guidance for 2022, with an EBITDA Margin as of September 30th at 15.7 percent, well above the target already announced to the market,” Giovanni Costantino, founder &amp; CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">The Italian Sea Group</a>, commented. “The solidity of our strategy is also testified by the success of our series production projects that, just a few months after their launch, have generated a strong commercial interest with the sale, in the third quarter 2022, of two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/570" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Admiral (Company)">Admiral</a> Panorama 50 metre motor yachts.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/240769/image/large-b3d71de28af8a1ddaf1754928e66048e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/240769">“The implementation of these serial projects will allow a further acceleration of our growth path, by enhancing two different growth drivers and thus continuing to focus our internal engineering capacity on deeply innovative custom-made yachts such as the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini</a> fleet, that will soon be launched and, we believe, will bring more momentum to our order portfolio,” Costantino continued. “Furthermore, our investment plans progress steadily in all the three shipyards, with a significant focus on environmental sustainability thanks to the completion of the photovoltaic system in the Marina di Carrara shipyard and the successive start of the sheds coverage in the La Spezia and Viareggio production sites.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/190633/image/large-7468869e75590740becc83b9377c52b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/190633">During this nine-month period, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">The Italian Sea Group</a> has invested around €11 million, as it progresses from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">TISG</a> 4.0 to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">TISG</a> 4.1, and finishes both the Viareggio and La Spezia production sites.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">The Italian Sea Group</a> has a net financial debt of €46 million, compared to a positive net financial position of €41 million as of 31 December 2021. A major factor contributing to this financial position is the Perini Navi acquisition, which cost <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">TISG</a> €75m.&nbsp;The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">Group</a> has 35 yachts currently under construction; it has 19 superyachts in-build and 16 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/511" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tecnomar (Company)">Tecnomar</a> for Lamborghini 63s underway.&nbsp;

We spoke with Justin Beard, Marketing and Sales Development Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Derecktor</a>, to find out a little more about this titan of American yachting. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251765/image/large-20e7c52020c060c2309484b9b543e89a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251765">What were the origins of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor Shipyards</a>&nbsp;and how has it continued after Bob Derecktor?When Bob was in high school, sometime during the 1930s, he designed a 26-foot sloop and built it in his family’s backyard in White Plains, New York – using oak for the frames, fir for the deck and pine for the mast. With the help of a friend, he sailed it to Nova Scotia for the summer.After a couple of years, Bob left college to focus on his passion. He built a 38-foot schooner and sailed it from New York to Baltimore, where he took a job at the Owens Boatyard, advancing quickly through the ranks to become foreman. Eventually returning to the New York area, he worked at the Edgar Johns Shipyard in Rye and Minnefords in City Island, building minesweepers designed to detonate underwater mines during World War II. Bob soon joined the effort himself, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in the early 1940s.&nbsp;During 1947, shortly after returning from the Navy, the young boatbuilder established Robert E. Derecktor, Inc. on Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck, New York. Surrounding himself with talented employees who would continue to grow along with the company, over the years he expanded the yard, following the ebbs and flows of the boatbuilding business — transitioning from wood to aluminium, from cruising boats to race boats, from sail to power, then to larger yachts and commercial boats.Today, four <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor</a>’s facilities span the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. from Maine to South Florida, offering vessel owners and operators everything from marina space to superyacht construction. Sanlorenzo has acquired share capital of Sea Energy, as it “continues to verticalise its strategic suppliers”.

Strong headway has been made in Amsterdam with the forthcoming <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus (Company)">Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus</a>, as construction moves forward. The first phase of the quay is being built and the process of making 22 hectares of extra land is still ongoing but taking shape quickly.&nbsp;The team will enter phase two, building docks one, two and three next month, with completion expected by June 2023. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> has announced their new project Scuola dei Mestieri (School of Trades), a professional training course for 18 to 30-year-olds looking to build a career in boatbuilding.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263034/image/large-67848c46907f1bd04f21730f85a281ec.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263034">The course combines theory and experience in the yard, with the programme offering classroom sessions and workshops to on-the-job training in production department. The course aims to create real career opportunities for participants, such as naval carpentry, deck fitting, engine mechanics, the list goes on.The first edition of the three-month course officially launched in March, and will be held at the “Don Bosco” Professional Training Centre in Forlì. After this first stage in Forlì, the Scuola dei Mestieri will move to Mondolfo and Sarnico in September to involve more young people in the new project. After selling the firm to First Niagara Financial Group, Rob was appointed as the company’s Senior Vice President, where he guided the Insurance Division with over $600,000,000 in annual sales. He also founded Lama Commercial Real Estate, where he negotiated site acquisitions for a number of large American retailers, including Walmart, CVS, and Rite Aid. During this time, Lama owned a yacht in Miami for his entire family to enjoy.&nbsp;After moving to Miami, Lama combined his love of yachting with his business acumen, establishing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5135" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miami International Yacht Sales LLC. (Company)">Miami International Yacht Sale</a>. Lama’s business and negotiation experience enabled him to find his niche in the sale of vessels over 30-metres. After attempting to meet up during a very busy boot Dusseldorf, we finally had the chance to sit down with Nick Gelevert, Founder and CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> over Teams in early February. Nick comes from a long line of yacht brokers, his grandfather Hans Lengers founding the Netherlands’ first brokerage. Today Nick is both the CEO of the ‘first Dutch superyacht charter company’ <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> with seven international offices and an impressive portfolio of pedigree yachts, and the Sales Director of brokerage firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/359" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lengers Yachts (Company)">Lengers</a>. With expansion always on his mind, Nick has much in store for the boutique charter firm. SYT found out more. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262239/image/large-028247e85db04278e4d7d6c2adfec517.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262239">With a legacy of brokerage in your family, was it always your plan to become a broker?I was born and raised in the midst of the yachting industry, and of course it came to my mind from a young age that I might work in the industry as well. My grandfather started selling yachts in the 1970s and there was also a boat building business within the family, so yachting is truly part of my family heritage. When the time came for me to start my first business however, I decided to break from the family tradition and I founded a company within the real estate industry. I think it was partly a youthful rebellion – I was only 23 – but I quickly realised that I’d made a mistake not following my passion for the yachting industry.I had been an active and competitive sailor from the age of eight, racing every week, and of course having grown up within my family, yachting was truly where my heart lay. So I &nbsp;decided to pivot the concept I’d created within the real estate industry, and do something similar within yachting. The business became <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters</a>; the first AirBnB for boats. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/69988/image/large-e5de394c61cf3a6b29fbcc9408e9bf14.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/69988">So how did an AirBnB for boats transform into a superyacht charter brokerage house?In 2015 we launched the platform and were the first in the world to do so. There were some other early adopters but we grew very quickly, operating in 63 countries with 12,000 boats available for rent. It was a successful beginning but we quickly realised that in order to become a truly profitable business, we would need a huge operational network. Boats are nothing like houses; they need work, maintenance and expansive shoreside support.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/50182/image/large-00c42362b1bed144ada7b119cd9afc4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50182">Why do you think that the company has done so well – how do you stand out from the crowd?At the same time as I was having these thoughts, clients from Lengers were generating leads and asking questions about Boatsters and enquiring if I could assist them with yacht charter. From these leads came a very organic transition into <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a>, where we began to work with crewed yachts above 20-metres. Not long after this transition, we took Boatsters offline and I focused my energies on the development of the superyacht charter business. Since that decision we’ve opened international offices, are managing some very exciting yachts and expect to double our fleet in 2023. The company is positive and profitable and with the direction we’re currently going, we will be one of the top players in the charter industry within a few years.&nbsp;I believe that our approach is what makes us stand out. We are a boutique charter company, and we don't have aspirations to be the biggest, we want to provide the best service to a limited number of clients. We have regular contact with owners, we offer a personal concierge service for onshore support, we are incredibly active and make our clients really feel how much we value them. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216778/image/large-e3b74dc8cf7cf04994e4b19dd6e7c678.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216778">What has it been like breaking into an industry that has been dominated by long standing and large companies, such as&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a>?When we set out we knew it would be like David and Goliath, but I have always enjoyed a challenge. My aspiration when we set out was to establish <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> as the industry’s first Dutch charter house, just as my grandfather was the first Dutch broker. I am happy to say we’ve achieved that goal and now we are looking to the next challenge.&nbsp;The yachting industry has an obsession with being the biggest, with companies claiming ‘the biggest charter fleet’ or the most charters completed, but what does that actually mean for the client? Very likely it means an impersonal approach, with yachts being managed by a conglomerate rather than a person &nbsp;– we do not aspire to become that kind of business!&nbsp;What are your plans for the future for the business?The next stage is expansion. We’ve built a base from which the company can grow exponentially and my attention first will be to make sure that our services are the best they can be. We aren’t going to be accepting any and all boats to the fleet, but really making sure that the yacht is able to offer clients the best services, with a stable crew and good knowledge base.&nbsp;In 2022 we had a revenue of over €12 million and with an expansion into the full spectrum of services including crewing and management, I expect that to see a stable increase this year. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216755/image/large-6c1f9a59bba24e5170d83edfc3039cf0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216755">Finally, what advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?Firstly, focus on an aspect of this industry and be the best at that aspect. There are so many generalists within yachting and what there needs to be is more specialists. Outside of work, Peter enjoys cycling, sailing, motorbiking, photography and tending to his beehives.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261482/image/large-8f42f4d17c286aa23635d9c9afd0624b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261482">How did you and Nigel meet and what sparked your decision to set up a company together?&nbsp;We met in Antigua in the ‘70s and became fast friends. In 1988 I was wrapping up an America’s Cup challenge and Nigel was finishing the build of a new yacht. We started chatting about what was next. As yachts were getting larger and more complicated, we felt clients needed an advocate to represent their best interests. We also believed there should be more discipline in terms of fiscal and time-related control imposed on the build process. And after 35 years it appears there was indeed a need!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/171475/image/large-def9b7fbcd7516e5756f79bc7fc282d0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/171475"> You’re a sailor and in the past&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a>&nbsp;was best known for its sailing yacht projects, but you’re now taking on more motor yachts with brands like&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>. Was this a straightforward transition and how does your role change between sail and power?&nbsp;When one considers today’s sailing superyachts and their relative systems, they have more complications than the equivalent motor yachts. For example, both types of vessels have engines, generators, HVAC, AV/IT systems, cooking and domestic appliances, desalination and sewage treatment plants, and so on. But on a sailing yacht there are also masts, rigging, captive winches, booms, hydraulic furling and tensioning systems and appendages like lifting keels – all in a hull that is usually less voluminous than a motor yacht. So the transition from a technical standpoint is quite straightforward, although it should be noted that we have been doing motor yacht projects for many years and so they are not new territory for us.&nbsp;In terms of role differences, in the sailing yacht world there is more focus on the nuances of sailing performance, whereas on motor yachts the performance is well defined and based on engine kilowatts, propeller designs and, of course, the hull shape. The interiors, outfitting, finish and quality are equally important on every superyacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180780/image/large-1604c001b0dc9b9c1caaa60d0e99d298.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180780">What kind of decisions can you make on your own and which require the owner’s approval?&nbsp;This depends largely on the involvement and experience of the client. In many cases, we have clients that are knowledgeable and have had a string of yachts before. In those cases, the client is often closely involved and brings that experience to bear, and it can be a very collaborative affair. Where a client is perhaps building for the first time, they may need more guidance. In either case, we present them with the options available in a clear and concise manner when a decision is required and recommend the one we feel is the right choice. This gives the client the benefit of our experience and the requisite information on which to base an informed decision.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/92787/image/large-25fbaa062214a0955512eecbe552c80e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/92787">Do ‘involved’ owners make your job easier or more difficult?&nbsp;Having a client closely participate in the project typically makes it more memorable for them as they are really creating their vision. In turn, this makes it more enjoyable for the entire team. Designing and building a yacht is a terrific endeavour and may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so we strive to make it a rewarding experience for the client. We have developed great friendships with many of our clients that outlast the build process. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/68864/image/large-d01918c154c9386a1eba29b93edea26b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68864"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a>&nbsp;offers yacht construction and management services. Does it make more sense if the same agency does both?&nbsp;When we started <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> in 1988, we didn’t have a yacht management division. However, once we had a few yachts ‘under our belts’ it became abundantly clear that there was a requirement for post-construction support the and formalising that support in the form of a yacht management division was a service that yacht owners needed. As the vessel progresses from the build phase to the operational phase, having one company providing both services makes for a seamless transition. Not least because by that stage we have a long-standing relationship with the client, we know the vessel inside and out, we have all the data, drawings and manuals, and we know which design decisions were made and why.The rules and regulations surrounding vessel navigation and operation have also increased exponentially and the burden is such that captains and crew require shore-based support. Furthermore, the client benefits from the continuity <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> offers; crew inevitably come and go, but we are the common thread and institutional knowledge about the yacht and the programme. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/75757/image/large-814590a2342fc3180dd4d70ca59bd2d7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/75757">Do you bring in your own preferred suppliers and/or subcontractors for new-build projects, or is that always up to the shipyard?&nbsp;To ensure there is no perceived conflict of interest, we remain fiercely independent. However, over many years of operation we’ve developed strong relationships with quality suppliers, manufacturers and vendors and can recommend those to the shipyard. We also have real-world experience as to how the equipment performs at sea. However, it is the shipyard that has overall responsibility for the construction process and provides the warranty, so they ultimately decide which suppliers and subcontractors are the best fit and those they prefer to work with. &nbsp;What would you change about the way we work in the superyacht industry?&nbsp;The elapsed time from the first conversation to the yacht being handed over can be many years. As an industry, we are always seeking ways to be more efficient and shorten the time required to build one of these masterpieces &nbsp;while maintaining the high quality standards expected. The other challenge is how to build yachts that can operate in an environmentally friendly way. Emissions are being lowered. We need to continue that trend to protect the marine environment we all so enjoy.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217714/image/large-e37cd890a97c5e166adce7d9d371918b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217714">Beyond the technical qualifications, what are the personal attributes needed to be a successful owner’s rep?&nbsp;On the personal side, attributes such as honesty, integrity, patience and respect. Being a good listener is also profoundly important. Other key qualities include staying focused, open-minded, nimble and the ability to adapt. Managing expectations is the most challenging aspect of the job. As these projects become larger and costlier, there are many facets to consider and with sometimes differing agendas, so the ability to develop a team with members sharing a common goal, is fundamental.&nbsp;Lastly, the experience of having been to sea in a multitude of yachts in wide-ranging conditions is enormously helpful. (Company)">Codecasa</a> Jet 2020 is the brainchild of Fulvio Codecasa, who called me to collaborate on his futuristic project. Italy

The Italian Sea Group is a global operator in the luxury yachting industry, listed on Euronext Milan (“EXM”) and active in the construction and refit of motoryachts and sailing yachts up to 140 metres. The Company, led by Italian entrepreneur Giovanni Costantino, operates on the market with the brands Admiral, renown for elegant and prestigious yachts, Tecnomar, known for is sporty features, cutting-edge design and high performance of its yachts, Perini Navi, excellence in the design and construction of large sailing yachts, and Picchiotti, historical brand in the Italian yachting industry.&nbsp;The Company has a business unit,&nbsp;NCA Refit, that manages the maintenance and refit services for yachts and mega yachts with a length over 60 metres.The Italian Sea Group is the first Italian superyacht maker for vessels over 50 metres.
