At one time the company was estimated to be the sixth largest custom yacht builder in the world, but in the mid-2010s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity Yachts</a> closed its doors and with it ceased a 20-plus year reign over the American boating market. As new orders stopped coming in it was no longer viable to run a large yacht manufacturing facility. Despite production ending in 2016, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity yachts</a> has continued to be a manufacturer of coveted vessels in the US, with one of the builder’s most popular models being the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity</a> 167 Tri-deck.In an unusual advertisement, Mike Joyce, CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1184" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hargrave Custom Yachts (Company)">Hargrave Custom Yachts</a>, Fort Lauderdale offered for sale, not one but two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity</a> 167 tri-deck motor yachts for just over $10m. These two hulls are the final Trinity Yachts to have been started, both belonging to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity Yachts</a> founder John Dane, who has been storing them in Gulfport, Mississippi. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219000/image/large-695b1a297d7a189f5c7f7d455b60d520.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219000">Mike Joyce spoke to SYT and shared some background on the unusual offering. “Time is up for these two projects, the shipyard is getting ready to bid some big commercial projects and the space needs to be cleared before the summer. The owner is ready for offers and is focused on selling them as a pair and will even consider partial financing for a qualified buyer.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209170/image/large-abe5e4e0da73fe0510e3a26e0623073f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209170">Taking a closer look at the hulls themselves, T-056 and T-052, both of which measure just under 51-metres and are respectively 40 percent and 20 percent complete. When Mike was first set with the task of offering the vessels to the market he initially considered only marketing the first and the more complete T-056 which was for sale for $7.6 million (a pretty impressive price for a new-build 50 metre yacht at that stage of completion). It quickly became apparent however, that anyone who was seriously considering buying it was also interested in the other, which was offered for $3.28m; the idea being they would keep the first one and sell the second at a profit. (For a bit of context, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity Yachts</a>’ yachts have a solid resale value, with even smaller models selling for upward of $15 million).<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57954/image/large-02e90a46af73d78a8e3543292d6396a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57954">&nbsp;Now, however, the yachts are being offered in an industry-first package deal, which Mike pioneered and, after calling him “crazy”, Dane agreed to the plan. Dane shed some light on how these final two units came to be left partially complete in Mississippi during a conversation with Mike Joyce. “The original owners of these two remaining boats both experienced severe financial problems during the crash of 2008-2009 that forced them to walk away from the projects. We tried a few times in the past to sell them to individuals yacht buyers, most of whom were experience yacht owners, and the pattern is identical to what Mike Joyce is seeing today – lots of serious interest from financially qualified buyers and then it all gets bogged down when they try put it together in a single neat clean document. That’s not how this works. In order to control the cost of completion you buy the boat then hire the subcontractors and you manage every detail.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217054/image/large-ab4d01508b61bd7c44ab3cdec9565e68.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217054">Part of the issue is that many buyers see the hulls for sale online without fully considering the mammoth task that would face a private owner to complete the vessels. Dane added, “Unless the buyer is heavily involved in managing the completion, it is a mission impossible, best suited to someone who has experience in big construction and development projects.” Despite recognising these major challenges however, Dane is keen to see the final two units completed as part of the legacy of the shipyard and added that many people who have become interested in the hulls, went on to purchase used <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity</a> yachts. He has even considered working out financing for a qualified shipyard or investor and already has shipping lined up for April/May to the potential destinations that could complete the builds.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209168/image/large-e99a37a7e9b6061d600a9f3a790f674a.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209168">Evidently the clock is against these two 50-metre boats, the Covid boom has spread to the US and boatyards that might be able to take them have been swiftly filling up. The longer they wait the less chance there is that they will be completed locally, or perhaps within the US at all. “Finding space and available manpower was not that simple because of the size and complexity of this project. Timing is tricky, and that is true in the US and elsewhere in the world. Front Street Shipyard was a good example. They had the space in their new building, they worked out a production schedule and budget that made sense, and then by the time buyers finally started getting ready to act, Front Street took on another major refit and the space was gone and it would push the project back another year before they could start.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219001/image/large-a3a1779c5f83da637fc5d724b3e628f8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219001">Despite the challenges the two vessels pose, they offer a potential owner a unique opportunity to complete and market two high quality yachts from one of the 21st century icons of US yachting. In the current market, yachts are selling faster than they have done since 2018 and many shipyards are backlogged for the next three years with new builds. These two hulls therefore offer an opportunity to own new vessels within a shorter lead time than newly commissioned yachts, but also with a lower cost than a traditional new-build as so much of the fundamental construction is already complete. Costs in 2022 for aluminium and steel are higher than they have been in years, with supply chain issues having been fuelled by the Covid crisis during the course of 2021 – so this could be an opportunity to skirt around one of the biggest issues in yacht construction right now.Zooming in further on the yachts themselves, the&nbsp;T-056 features a six stateroom layout with an elevator servicing all of her three decks. Like all <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity Yachts</a> she would make an excellent yacht for charter, she has larger <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> engines and a faster top speed that some of her sisterships, with excellent handling underway. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/57950/image/large-c8697563aa94916d91191268271bfad6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/57950">T-052 likewise features a six stateroom layout and the engineering for the vessel is complete – a big time saver when it comes to completing the construction. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1184" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hargrave Custom Yachts (Company)">Hargrave</a> has collected everything you would need to know about the vessels, including production data, initial estimates from several yards around the world. France-based builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/416" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocea (Company)">OCEA</a> has announced that the fourth hull in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/416" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocea (Company)">OCEA</a> Commuter 108 yacht series is nearing completion. The hull of the 60-metre superyacht Feadship 713 has been spotted in transit from the Feadship De Vries Group <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5058" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scheepswerf Slob (Company)">Scheepswerf Slob</a> facility in Papendrecht near Rotterdam.
