The Latest News on the EPS Thruster

With all the advance media publicity about the EPS thruster, you’ve probably read about the enormous benefits of this innovative thruster system. We are delighted to give you the very latest news on this exciting – yes, revolutionary – product.

Many shipowners and naval architects have already been in contact with us, looking to find out more about the advantages the EPS thruster will provide in terms of power-performance, noise, weight and robustness. You’ll find a summary of these benefits at the end of this mail.

Firstly, though, here’s a quick reminder that the EPS thruster is an electrically operated thruster system without gear and propeller shaft. Blades are connected to an outer ring, rather than to a hub. Having no clearance between the propeller and tube removes a likely source of cavitation. As a result, an extremely quiet and comfortable operation is assured.

What’s new?
Due to the enormous interest in more varied applications, Van der Velden™ Marine Systems has optimised the EPS production process to apply the latest electrical control techniques and design innovations.

The development of the EPS as a bowthruster unit has now entered into its first full scale testing phase. The initial engineering of the EPS 800 has evolved the system into a 7 blade propeller to create a large blade surface for less cavitation, more balance and a final mounting design inside the yachts bow tunnel (including the necessary streamline bodies).
This Spring will see the first tests at MARIN to determine whether further optimalisation of the EPS 800 design is required and/or achievable.

How is the EPS controlled?
Your EPS installation will come as standard with a frequency converter, control stick and alarm panel for the wheelhouse position. Additional options include our Comfort system (with PLC control + touch screen) and Luxus system (Comfort system + touch screen in wheelhouse for extra security). Further options for wing panels will also be available upon request.

So when is it available?
The EPS will be available with the following power ratings:
• EPS 800 (110,132, 160 kW): Mid 2005
• EPS 650 (75, 90 kW): End 2005
• EPS 550 (55, 75 kW): Start 2006
• EPS 450 (22, 37 kW): Start 2006

Anything else on the agenda?
In addition to the fixed bowthrusters, we are also working on retractable systems. This development has just started and it is expected that the EPS-R will be ready approximately six months after the EPS product launches detailed above.

Are there any practical examples?
The first EPS has already been ordered by a leading yard in Taiwan. The system will be installed on a state-of-the-art 70-metre motoryacht, due to be launched in the summer of 2005. We’ll give you more details on this project – and other EPS applications – in the near future. What is already clear from the advance enquires we have received, is that the EPS is going to have a major impact in various markets. Don’t get left behind!
