<a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TYBA Yacht Charter Show - 2022">TYBA Yacht Charter Show</a> is a wrap – and what an event it was. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TYBA Yacht Charter Show (Company)">Turkey’s Yachting &amp; Brokers Association</a> (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TYBA Yacht Charter Show (Company)">TYBA</a>) worked in cooperation with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4263" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="D-Marin Göcek (Company)">Göcek D-Marin</a>, to ensure that this newly picked location ran smoothly between 6-10th of May. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/226282/image/large-5428863f805a50246ed2d96ed8a8d3b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/226282">Many brokers and attendees had made their rounds earlier in the year: <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1334" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MYBA Charter Show - 2022">MYBA Charter Show</a>, in Barcelona, followed by the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mediterranean Yacht Show - 2022">Mediterranean Yacht Show</a> in Nafplio, Greece. To smooth the transition from show to show, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TYBA Yacht Charter Show (Company)">TYBA</a> organised a transfer from Athens to Dalaman. The charter plane cut out all nonsense, as it saved the hassle of transferring in Istanbul and getting multiple flights. It was also offered at a reduced cost – €150 per person. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/226276/image/large-1166ad9078ad52884cb81832ab156523.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/226276">The event itself was a roaring success and the newly located site in Göcek played a key role in this. As a destination, it’s gorgeous. It also benefits from having a town a walking distance from the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4263" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="D-Marin Göcek (Company)">D-Marin</a>, the marina that hosted the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TYBA Yacht Charter Show (Company)">TYBA Yacht Charter Show</a>, meaning that participants and guests could easily get to and from the show. The largest on the bill <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2428" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ADA Yacht Works (Company)">ADA Yacht Works</a>’ 49.9-metre sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7254" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="All About U 249.9m (163'9&quot;)ADA Yacht Works2019">All About U 2</a>. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/285" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ginton Naval Architects (Company)">Ginton Naval Architect</a> headed her naval architecture and penned an impressive 10.44-metre beam and a volume 492 GT. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TYBA Yacht Charter Show (Company)">TYBA</a> made great use of the space during the second evening, and used <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7254" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="All About U 249.9m (163'9&quot;)ADA Yacht Works2019">All About U 2</a> to host cocktails and a networking party.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227477/image/large-2d5611171f58306afcab454efcecd627.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227477"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227479/image/large-9603ef3a55c299a124c1584bc052284d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227479">Throughout the show, events were held from morning to night. Each morning seminars were held at the D-Resort Conference Hall in the town centre. The talks covered a range of themes; but a unifying theme was Turkey as destination. Dr. Nesimi Ozan Veryeri from the WWF was invited to discuss the importance of responsible anchorage, highlighting the environmental, social and economic impact that is inevitable if we don’t protect Persedonia; seagrass native in the Mediterranean. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/226280/image/large-cfa34247c8fc1c9fa9f7189c59de4851.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/226280">Serhan Cengiz, Managing Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6712" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vela Dare Yachts (Company)">Vela Dare Yachting</a> and Committee President of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TYBA Yacht Charter Show (Company)">TYBA</a>, took the stand the following day, and shared his knowledge of the culturally rich coastline of Turkey. From well-preserved archeological sites through to idyllic inlets and coastal towns – Cengiz had a long list of destinations that he recommends charter guests to visit. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227480/image/large-a149956b52387f795e4280457ca3345e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227480"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227481/image/large-1debd3156c80812e555752f02a6b60aa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227481">Another standout event of the show was the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TYBA Yacht Charter Show (Company)">TYBA</a> Chef’s Competition. The challenge was to create a four course meal for a jury of three judges from a “mystery box” of ingredients, supplied by Carrefour. Each kitchen had two hours to prepare the meal. Whisky tasting on DragonFly, hosted by Goolets, through to late night dancing on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simay M 26.0m (85'4&quot;)S Yachting 2015">Simay M</a>. The crowning event though was the Gala Dinner, held across the bay. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TYBA Yacht Charter Show (Company)">TYBA</a> organised boats to transport the guests to the soiree. It was at the Gala Dinner where Chef Zafer Asci claimed his award; another notable prize was for “best crew”, which was bagged by the staff aboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12131" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Wall39.7m (130'3&quot;)2012">The Wall</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227465/image/large-cf441c5dd68496815323af389b65b270.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227465">Over 250 charter brokers were in attendance this year; and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4936" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TYBA Yacht Charter Show (Company)">TYBA</a> has plans to welcome even more next year. The 2023 instalment will once again be held at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4263" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="D-Marin Göcek (Company)">D-Marin, Göcek</a>. Today (18 May 2023) marks the second celebration for the International Day for Women in Maritime. The day celebrates women in the industry and is intended to promote recruitment, raise the profile of women in maritime and address the current gender imbalance in the maritime industry. This event is scheduled to take place from November 16th to November 19th, 2023, once again finding its prestigious home at the Phuket Yacht Haven Marina.Following this informative charter event, yachting enthusiasts can mark their calendars for another exciting occasion, the Thailand International Boat Show, from January 11th to January 14th, 2024. Gulets may not have the glitz and glamour of superyachts, but they certainly have character. She’s a gulet done differently and isn’t a harbinger to traditional yachting. Her builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5014" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TurkYacht (Company)">Turkyacht</a> penned her interior to emulate that of a boutique hotel, with clean minimalist detailing and a finish that you’d expect on a motor yacht. &nbsp;“These modern styled gulets are becoming more commonplace now; and there are a few designed with a large swim platform and staterooms on the lower deck, emulating the GA of a motor yacht” yacht broker, Nicolò Venturi of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6711" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Yachting Srl. (Company)">Ocean Yachting</a>, explained. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227068/image/large-6e13cf7ebead4cea95dd903e2b94c7c4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227068">Another modern take on the gulet was constructed not in Bodrum, as most typically are, but further north in the metropolis of Istanbul. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/752" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mengi Yay Yachts (Company)">Mengi Yay Yachts</a>, the well-reputed motor yacht builder, launched the 47.35-metre gulet <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4588" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seleda47.35m (155'4&quot;)Mengi Yay Yachts2021">Seleda</a> just last year and enlisted <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5521" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="BTA Design (Company)">BTA Design</a> to curate a crisp and modern interior. The quality and finish are certainly scalar; and as diverse as the yachts themselves – there’s no skirting that fact. But for many that’s not that an issue, as to cruise the coastline of Turkey what better way to do it than in a vessel that has a long heritage. The other major perk is that the amount of space on offer easily overshadows that of a sailing yacht of a similar size. The general consensus at the event was that there isn’t a typical gulet charter client; politicians, retirees and party-going 18-30-year-olds. Just across the Bungus Bay, Göcek, was a star-studded line up of superyachts at the newly acquired Port Azure. The marina is the first dedicated superyacht marina in Turkey. It boasts 20 berths and the capacity to dock anything up to 120-metres. Over the weekend Bungus Bay with a hive of activities with everything from gulets to 110-metre superyachts milling around. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/75444/image/large-7440fda2eda05c616066707823fb874b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/75444"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/75447/image/large-1bd46d96049498b589314710411d1c41.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/75447">To get a feel for the chartering experience in Turkey, I caught up with Omer Zarif, Captain of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Quest R36.6m (120'1&quot;)Benetti SpA2008">Quest R</a>. “Just in this region alone we have great diversity,'' Zarif explained. “For those looking to party and enjoy the nightlife then Bodrum is the place to be. If you’re looking for a quiet place to drop anchor and relax then Göcek and its surrounding bays are the ideal cruising ground. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227071/image/large-c1c25b335dc6ab24a4f1f1124b3f1995.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227071">I like to recommend my guests to start in Göcek and then travel up to Bodrum.” The time of year is also likely to steer your course as July and August are extremely warm in Göcek. I was reassured time and time again of the commitment to develop a “family” onboard. The Captain of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2911" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sea Dream45.0m (147'8&quot;)Aegean Yacht2005">Sea Dream</a>, Ümit Çetok, for one, recently moved ship with a number of his crew. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4332" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silver Moon34.55m (113'4&quot;)Kulach Yachts2010">Silver Moon</a> has run the same crew for six years, while Ilana, the Chief Stewardess onboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Quest R36.6m (120'1&quot;)Benetti SpA2008">Quest R</a> has been serving her for 11 years.
