Following the purchase of Trinity Yachts by Harvey Gulf International Marine in June 2015, the American yard now reports that its New Orleans yacht building facility is up for sale for an approximate $30 million. In addition to the yard and its facilities, the transaction will include The Trinity Yachts name, brand, and all related designs and engineering research and development completed to date.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156486/image/large-5a3ae1c244f10bf5633e321c10c79004.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156486">As part of the $30 million package will come 20 complete-engineered designs, the 48 acre shipyard and a partially built 168 foot project, hull T-052. The uncompleted hull T-056 is also available for sale, but does not fall under the advertised sale agreement. According to Billy Smith, COO of Trinity Yachts, Harvey Gulf will retain the group’s Gulfport, Mississippi facility, which was acquired as part of its purchase of Trinity yachts in June. “The new owners recognise their core business is servicing the offshore oil and gas industry, and they understand, while the shipyard is viable, the New Orleans yard represents more capacity than they’ll need for the foreseeable future,” Smith said.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156487/image/large-69ac3e868fd15cdaed2d5861b6ada12a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156487">Smith reports that the New Orleans plant offers a number of exciting possibilities for potential buyers, ranging from the continuation of new-build yachts or the establishment of a world-class superyacht repair facility. According to Smith, the possibility of acquiring the shipyard presents a unique opportunity, “Five to 10 yacht owners or businessmen can get together, who don’t want to buy an entire shipyard, but want to invest in it and get into the business, with each owning 10 percent. …this may represent a good opportunity to enter the business at a reduced risk.”For now at least it seems that operations will continue as normal at the yard, until a suitable buyer emerges. At which point Trinity looks forward to a smooth transition, “If they don’t get a fair value, they’ll continue to build and repair yachts. It’s not a distressed sale — they just feel it’s not their core business but would like to see a new owner keep the shipyard and the Trinity name going,” says Smith. “We’re trying to have shipyard remain active and that there will be a smooth transition in ownership,” he said. “The yard didn’t miss a beat on June 25 when it changed hands, and we’re hoping we’ll be able to do the same thing one more time.”By Charl van Rooy, photos by Merijn de Waard
