Enrico Chhibber speaks with Japan-based yachting experts to explore recent regulatory reforms and infrastructure developments that are gradually positioning Japan as a more accessible and appealing destination for superyachts. When it comes to attractive superyacht destinations in Asia, Thailand has traditionally taken the spotlight. Japan, meanwhile, has remained a lesser-known cruising ground and has often been viewed as logistically challenging. Today, however, that narrative is changing, as Japan begins to reposition itself on the global yachting map. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370701/image/large-fccdf0ce93277bda47184d5f87855515.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370701">The Japanese archipelago, comprising more than 14,000 islands and stretching over 34,000 kilometres of coastline, spans approximately 3,000 kilometres from north to south. With climates ranging from the snowy winters of Hokkaido to the subtropical warmth of Okinawa, the country offers year-round cruising opportunities and a broad range of geographical and cultural experiences.Yet despite these natural advantages, Japan has not historically appealed to the international superyacht community. Regulatory complexities and limited marina infrastructure for larger vessels have, until recently, presented notable hurdles to its development as a cruising destination. This landscape is now beginning to evolve. Since 2021, a series of regulatory reforms have made it easier for privately registered, foreign-flagged yachts to enter and cruise Japanese waters.Further momentum followed in December 2024 with the announcement of Superyacht Base Kobe Marina, which is currently under construction, with a full yacht service opening in 2026 and a full opening with surrounding infrastructure taking place in 2027. The project is intended to help address longstanding infrastructural limitations and support Japan’s efforts to attract more superyacht tourism.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370696/image/large-5ef3ac54fac761e21641b06208086062.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370696"> Marina infrastructure development in JapanAlthough Japan’s general maritime infrastructure is well developed, facilities specifically designed for superyachts remain limited. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Person/935" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nigel Beatty, United Kingdom (Person)">Nigel Beatty,</a> yacht broker at YACHTZOO and Chairman of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7320" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association (Company)">Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association</a>, observed that while the country is well-equipped overall, it lacks dedicated infrastructure tailored to the operational needs of larger yachts. “Infrastructure is brilliant in Japan, but if you're talking about purely superyacht infrastructure, then we are lacking a little bit,” he said.In most cases, visiting yachts cruise along the coast, anchoring near beaches or making brief stops at town piers. According to Beatty, this pattern highlights the need for more structured superyacht hubs and ports where large yachts can access services such as mooring, refuelling, provisioning, and guest handling. “When you go cruising, you anchor or tie up at a town pier for a night, then move on,” he explained. “But you also need hubs, places where yachts can come in and operate with proper support.”Some capacity does exist. A marina in Fukuoka, for example, can currently host a small number of larger vessels. However, the most significant development is taking place in Kobe, where a new marina is under construction. Announced in late 2024, Superyacht Base Kobe Marina is being developed to accommodate yachts up to 80-metres in length for stern to dockage and any size for alongside dockage. Just in the last few weeks the facility has accommodated a 70-metre and a 117-metre. Beatty noted that the basin is roughly half the size of Port Hercule in Monaco.Yukio Shintani of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1132" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creation Marine (Company)">Creation Marine</a>, a lead investor who has played a role in coordinating stakeholders for the Kobe project, confirmed the marina is being established as a destination facility and is expected to open within two years. Once complete, it will serve as one of the first ports in Japan specifically designed to support visiting superyachts at scale.While Japan does not yet offer the density of dedicated infrastructure found in more established superyacht destinations, ongoing developments suggest a gradual shift toward greater accessibility and operational support.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/104219/image/large-c94403a78cad4fa52830c3e4d2898030.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/104219"> Before the Change: Superyacht regulations in Japan prior to 2021 Although foreign-flagged superyachts were technically permitted to enter and cruise in Japan before 2021, a combination of bureaucratic complexity and limited facilities made the country a difficult destination to navigate. As Nigel Beatty noted, “Whether commercially or privately registered, Japan never really drew a strong distinction between yacht types. Superyachts have technically been able to visit Japan for quite some time. The issue was the bureaucracy involved. While we used to manage it, the process was labour-intensive, and that translated into high costs for visiting yachts.”Japan did offer a relative advantage for crew from visa waiver countries. “There have always been positive aspects to cruising in Japan,” Beatty added. “For example, if you were from a visa waiver country, such as those in Europe or North America, you could enter Japan by yacht and remain for up to 90 days as a tourist, even as crew.”However, crew from non-waiver countries such as South Africa, India, and the Philippines, who represent a significant portion of the global yachting workforce, faced more complications. These individuals were required either to obtain a visa in advance or rely on a short-term crew pass valid for just 14 days. “Renewing it involved leaving the country and re-applying at an immigration office,” Beatty said. “Approval often depended on the discretion of the local immigration office, which made the process inconsistent and inefficient.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Person/4301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kenta Inaba, Japan (Person)"></a><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Person/4301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kenta Inaba, Japan (Person)">Kenta Inaba</a>, President and Partner at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6572" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Super Yacht Logistics Japan (Company)">Super Yacht Logistics</a>, described how procedural rigidity once defined the experience for visiting yachts. “In the past, every time a yacht entered Japan, we had to process customs, immigration and quarantine, not just on arrival but again at each subsequent port,” he explained. “When I started in this business, I had to submit a full list of every port the yacht was planning to visit. But yachts don’t follow fixed routes like commercial vessels. Their movements are often dictated by weather and anchorage conditions, which makes rigid planning difficult.”Even minor navigational changes could create problems. “If a yacht was anchored and the wind shifted, they might need to move to another part of the bay. But if that area wasn’t listed in the original plan, it became an issue,” Inaba said. “Even bringing something as simple as a bottle of beer back onboard required paperwork.” The system, he added, was not designed with yachts in mind. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/298475/image/large-124d7d95e2299e38d8fd95f9b6b90929.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/298475">Turning Point: The 2021 regulatory reformsRegulatory changes introduced in 2021 significantly altered how Japan manages visiting superyachts. Previously constrained by complex procedures, foreign-flagged vessels now benefit from a more streamlined regulatory environment. “Much of that red tape has now been removed,” Beatty said.One of the most significant adjustments was the introduction of the Naikosen (similar to a cruising permit). After completing initial customs, immigration and quarantine procedures, yachts can apply for the permit, which, along with a blanket Closed Port Permit, removes the requirement to file repeated clearances at each domestic port. “Yachts used to be required to declare every intended stop in advance, which was completely impractical,” Inaba said. “Now, they have the flexibility to change course depending on conditions.”One of the more favourable regulations that was always in place in Japan is that foreign registered vessels remain indefinitely in Japan allowing for longer and more adaptable cruising schedules and possibly basing themselves in the country long term. Changes to crew entry procedures have addressed previous constraints. The introduction of the Multiple Landing Permit, or “Crew Pass,” allows foreign crew to remain in Japan for the duration of the yacht’s stay; and even up to one year. This replaces the former 14-day restriction that often-required multiple renewals and placed a disproportionate burden on those from non-waiver countries. The Crew Pass allows crew ashore in the local areas that the yacht will be for yacht business, shopping or sightseeing.Crew from countries covered by Japan’s visa waiver programme continue to benefit from 90-day tourist access, allowing for greater flexibility to travel ashore or explore the length while the vessel is in port.Together, these updates have reduced many of the operational constraints that previously discouraged superyacht visits. Japan is now better aligned with international practices and more accessible to a global yachting audience; and in some areas have more favourable regulations than well-established yachting countrie<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/298430/image/large-ae231a89fb0e19e109ca66eda85be1ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/298430">Looking AheadJapan’s regulatory progress in recent years has laid important groundwork, but further improvements will be necessary to support charter activity. In particular, foreign-flagged, commercially registered yachts still face regulatory hurdles when seeking to operate charters in Japanese waters. Shintani acknowledged this ongoing challenge. “I want to try to create everything for the foreign-flagged yacht to charter. This is our mission.”While Japanese-flagged yachts can operate commercially, the charter process for foreign-flagged vessels remains undecided, however moves are afoot to make a rule for foreign charter yachts with a charter contract already developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3581" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hill Dickinson Llp (Company)">Hill Dickinson</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7320" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association (Company)">Asia Pacific Superyacht Association</a>, which navigates specific Japanese regulations. The solution to this issue will be an important next step in positioning Japan as a competitive superyacht destination in the Asia-Pacific region. A new chapter for Asia: Japan’s rise as a cruising destination

Japan is emerging as Asia’s newest superyacht destination, driven by regulatory reform and new marina infrastructure including Superyacht Base Kobe. 

A new streamlined administrative process has been launched to allow foreign yachts to sail freely between Abu Dhabi and Dubai from January 2026. The new protocol is designed to streamline yacht movement and elevate the UAE’s yachting experience. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/381143/image/large-5a93b42afa19898a8603a00bee753194.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/381143">The streamlined system removes duplicate clearance procedures, allowing foreign-flagged yachts to move between the two emirates with a single recognised sailing permit. For the first time, sailing permits issued by either Abu Dhabi or Dubai will be honoured across both emirates, eliminating the need for repeated approvals or local entry and exit processing, which will reduce waiting times, documentation requests, and administrative costs as a mutually recognised permit issued by either emirate will grant seamless passage between the two cruising hubs.Central to the change is a new digital information bridge powered by the Early Inquiry System. This momentum aligns with the long-term goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, which aims to double the size of Dubai’s economy by 2033 and further consolidate its position as a leading global destination for business and leisure.Close cooperation between government and industry has been key to this progress. Regular consultation ensures infrastructure, regulations and sustainability measures align with investor expectations. Being able to move quickly between locations changes the whole dynamic. From Monaco, you can be in Saint-Tropez in just over an hour, or dash across to Portofino for lunch. It’s balanced.”Noise and vibration levels are also notably low, even at speed, particularly with the new set of gyroscopic stabilisers. “We’ll often watch movies in the master at night while underway. You don’t notice the motion, it’s very smooth.”What the owner values most, however, is the sense of proximity to the water. “I’ve been on a lot of yachts where you feel quite detached – you’re up high, behind glass, away from the sea. This is different. Over three centuries ago, Maurepas, a French frigate sent by King Louis XIV, sank off the coast of Panama. Its location has remained a secret, closely guarded by the indigenous Guna Yala people of the San Blas islands. No explorer has been allowed to search the sacred waters. Until now.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/368619/image/large-c2804e39714b85960edd8b36a9b2a4c8.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/368619">Permission to search the sacred waters of the San Blas Islands, off the coast of Panama, is rare and must be granted by the indigenous Guna Yala community. For the first time ever, the Guna people have given Deep Blue Explorers (DBE), a team of Ocean X, permission to search for the lost frigate Maurepas, and any passionate traveller can decide to join.&nbsp;To realise this incredible opportunity, DBE teamed up with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6954" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus (Company)">Pelorus</a> Travel to create a sacred treasure hunt. Not only will guests get to search for the gold, silver, and jewels that remain in the shipwreck, they also get to meet and spend time with the Guna Yala peoples, with whom the treasure will be shared.&nbsp;Worth an estimated $24 million USD, the treasure will be divided among the Guna Yala, the DBE-team, and guests who've signed up for the experience. The shipwreck is protected by the indigenous Guna Yala tribe, who inhabit 49 of the 300 Panaminian San Blas islands. The water surrounding the islands is considered sacred by the Guna people, making it impossible to legally search for the lost treasure. Now, the Guna Yala have decided to share this secret with the DBE-team.To understand why, we have to travel back to 2011 and 10,000 kilometres East. The Ocean X team discovered what is now known as the ‘Baltic Sea Anomaly’, a strange object sitting at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. To this day, no one knows exactly what it is or why it's there. That is, no one besides the Guna Yala. Although its thousands of kilometres away, the Guna Yala believe that the 'Baltic Sea Anomaly' is the interstellar vessel in which their ancestors descended from space. In 2012, a legal representative of the Guna Yala contacted Ocean X to get in touch about not just the anomaly, but also to explore the lost treasure of Maurepas.Besides the hindrance of the pandemic, the long timeline highlights how careful the Guna Yala people are in sharing the details of the lost treasure. After thirteen years of negotiations and conversations, legal agreements have been established, as well as enough trust between the DBE-team and the Guna Yala, to make this expedition a reality. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/368621/image/large-649fd34e338b413999d162950582b455.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/368621">What to expect&nbsp;During a seven-day stay onboard a catamaran or superyacht, guests will get to experience what it’s like to be a modern-day-explorer. Each day, guests dive and explore the sacred waters, sit in on evening lectures about the history of Maurepas, and have the rare chance to share a meal with the Guna Yala while listening to generation-old stories.&nbsp;After spending each day scanning the seabed with a magnetometer, salvage diving and observing the recovery process of the treasure, guests will get to enjoy gourmet meals, prepared by a 5-star chef, while relaxing in air conditioned spaces. &nbsp;Besides guests, the DBE-team and the superyacht's crew, the expedition will also be filmed and turned into a documentary by renowned filmmaker Mikael Flodell. Flodell has played an important role in organising the expedition, sitting in on multiple meetings with the Guna Yala Congress and community leaders, who decide collectively whether something or someone is welcome in their sacred sea. Flodell will film a documentary on searching and finding the Maurepas&nbsp;treasure, with &nbsp;a special focus on the indigenous Guna Yala. As of May 2025, Egypt permits foreign-flagged, commercially registered yachts to cruise freely for leisure throughout its territorial waters.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241350/image/large-2de9324bef92f6cd991b8cb0b8e8d467.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241350">The decision follows sustained advocacy and close coordination between maritime industry stakeholders and local authorities, including the active involvement of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7369" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Felix Maritime Agency (Company)">Felix Maritime Agency</a>, in response to growing demand from international yacht owners.“This is a big win,” said Bahi Naguib, Operations Director at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7369" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Felix Maritime Agency (Company)">Felix Maritime Agency</a>. “Opening Egypt’s waters to foreign-flagged commercial yachts is a long-overdue move that puts us on the map as a serious charter destination.”The change grants these yachts the freedom to explore Egypt’s diverse coastline, from the remote islands of the Red Sea to the shores of the Mediterranean, without the restrictions that previously applied.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/279422/image/large-544731ec79fe45cd2528500ce5176efc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/279422">“There’s still a lot to sort out from customs and crew handling to basic marina infrastructure,” added Naguib. “We also need to grow our domestic charter scene and put real investment into protecting marine life, starting with proper mooring buoys to keep anchors off the reefs. This is a strong first step. This departure follows a period of refit, service and optimisation works. For owner Paul Andrews, the search for the right yacht was a journey that spanned more than a decade. However, when he first came across the 25.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/121" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palmer Johnson Yachts (Company)">Palmer Johnson</a> sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> online, something about her caught his attention. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394762/image/large-d54e9461baa90d5794ad964df495e456.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394762">“I first saw her in a video while I was searching for yachts,” he explained. “She was located in Thailand at the time, which was quite literally on the other side of the world from me, but her presence immediately stood out.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394534/image/large-bfddc47ecaf6a83efc8300953b5b19d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394534">Originally launched in 1967, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> was the largest aluminium hulled sailing yacht in the world when she first hit the water. Built as a classic world cruising yacht, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> had circumnavigated the world three times, with voyages to the Antarctic and Arctic regions when she entered the market in 2022. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394541/image/large-c96b4ebc0ab5a9453459421e627799d7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394541">“The beam, the proportions and the sheer character of the yacht caught my attention straight away,” recalled Andrews. “I wasn’t specifically searching for a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/121" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palmer Johnson Yachts (Company)">Palmer Johnson</a>, but when she was built, she was engineered to a commercial, almost military-grade standard and built to navy specs, which gave her a genuine pedigree, strength and a fascinating story behind her.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394543/image/large-0b87ef55ef9559c3dc95e76eca2db6c7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394543">However, when Andrews finally travelled to Thailand to inspect the yacht in person, the initial impression was far from ideal. “It was raining heavily and she looked tired and neglected.” But returning the following day to see the yacht in clear conditions revealed a completely different vessel. “Her lines were beautiful and the potential became obvious. She simply needed vision and attention.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394544/image/large-f191bd60c4deb3732c009830efb76fc3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394544">In 2015 under the ownership of her previous owners, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> had started a refit programme spanning more than $1 million, which lasted five years and saw her receive a full teak interior refit. “It was clear that previous owners had already invested heavily in the yacht,” added Andrews. “The teak interior joinery was exceptional and the hull structure was sound. However, the layout did not fully make use of the yacht’s size.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394540/image/large-3bd64f4dfb231598384875f28fc57a05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394540">With the help of Martin Holmes and his team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lee Marine International Brokerage (Company)">Lee Marine</a>, Andrews took a boat from Langkawi, Malaysia where he purchased <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> and started the process of refitting her in Phuket. “My vision was always to maximise the yacht without taking away the character that makes Firebird special,” he explained. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394689/image/large-066bcffa01ddea4816fadbefefba6fb6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394689">“Rather than remove that character, the refit focused on respecting the craftsmanship already onboard, while improving the functionality and layout for modern cruising. So the very first thing I wanted to do was lay a completely new teak deck.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394684/image/large-59c92dfa1c2c4dfaf499558c82520e13.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394684">The refit saw beautifully laid teak installed throughout, which instantly transformed her appearance and the feeling underfoot. From here, Andrews had a large swim platform and gangway at the stern installed for easy access, as well as an alfresco dining area for 12, with a large three-metre teak L-shaped sofa added and a circular seating area for eight at her stern.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394683/image/large-ccd9dbe381bbc98da19e89f67500eafb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394683">Additional work saw her saloon and guest staterooms reworked to create a larger and more comfortable interior, while technical works included the installation of a new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Raymarine UK Ltd (Company)">Raymarine</a> navigation suite, electric furling systems and the recommissioning of her <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1497" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Detroit Diesel (Company)">Detroit Diesel</a> engine and generators.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394537/image/large-a9744df0db0cb9126710320c8ad8f685.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394537">&nbsp;“I was involved in every stage of the project!” beamed Andrews. “Working alongside skilled craftsmen in Thailand allowed the ideas I had for the yacht to be executed properly.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394682/image/large-6c7c43f1ab3dc6151b36ef4b9e0c6d90.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394682">“The region has an impressive concentration of marine specialists including riggers, carpenters, sailmakers and marine engineers. The quality of teak craftsmanship in Thailand is also exceptional and the cost of skilled labour is significantly lower than in many other parts of the world. By chance I also discovered a local boat carpenter whose family had been building boats in the region for generations. His team worked tirelessly and played a crucial role in transforming the yacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394536/image/large-a684c5dbb17405c08f59b474c49fe63e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394536">A large portion of the refit work was carried out at Premier Superyacht Shipyard near <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yacht Haven Marina (Company)">Yacht Haven Marina</a> in Phuket. The yard operates an 890-tonne travel lift and regularly handles vessels significantly larger than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a>, so during her haul-out, hull works, repainting, mechanical servicing and installation of the bow thruster were completed at the yard. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394535/image/large-fe228dc87c3eb4c006007450d0644190.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394535">The refit started almost immediately after Andrews had stepped onboard and he remained involved throughout the process. “After studying the layout of an <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> 85, I realised it might be possible to alter the companionway arrangement and open access to unused space within the yacht. By cutting through the bulkhead at the end of the galley we created a new passageway that allowed an entirely new guest stateroom to be built.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394687/image/large-2e193db0a4b19958ca9e5ecb0fbbb3b1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394687">The result allowed for unused areas to be converted into additional guest accommodation, while maintaining the logical flow through her companionway and saloon areas. Thanks to this, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> is now able to comfortably accommodate up to 13 guests, while still feeling spacious. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394691/image/large-d359643ead180961dcf469e992df6a3a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394691">“The onboard experience is exceptional now! <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> is incredibly comfortable and she has become a wonderful place to spend time. I have several comfortable homes on land, but I genuinely did not expect living aboard a yacht to feel this enjoyable.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394775/image/large-19d12ff20ebf8798893858104887e523.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394775">From a technical standpoint the most important upgrade was the installation of a Max Power bow thruster. At 71 tonnes, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> is not a small yacht and the thruster significantly improved manoeuvrability for docking. Paired with electric furling systems, her sails can now be easily controlled from the cockpit, &nbsp;which means the yacht can be sailed comfortably by a small crew. “Together with the bow thruster and upgraded navigation systems, the yacht is now far easier and safer to operate,” added Andrews.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394782/image/large-7d015b051a954c975849eb73b943caa0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394782">Currently available for charter, Andrews noted that there had already been interest from charter clients in the Seychelles and the Maldives. “It would feel rather selfish to keep such a yacht entirely to myself! Our goal is to have her operating in the Greek islands by 2027.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394781/image/large-71d773016ba60ca5be3610663cfc2a04.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394781">The refit took approximately 18 months to complete, with the project bringing the yacht a new lease of life. “I have restored historic buildings and classic cars before, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> has been the most rewarding project of them all! Working on her felt almost like giving a living vessel a new chapter in her life. Superyachts have become a floating home for many of its new-age owners, and it is precisely this that has motivated <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Custom Yachts (Company)">Alpha Custom Yachts</a>’ design for the Squalo 100. The brief for both the exterior and interior design was to create a yacht that feels right to live on, emotionally, physically and sensorially. From the layout to the engineering behind the walls was approached through the lens of human experience, rather than mere aesthetics. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/395777/image/large-3128f701f247e9a823704b469af76762.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/395777">Intimacy, comfort &amp; balanceFor <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Custom Yachts (Company)">Alpha Custom Yachts</a>, luxury is deeply connected to proportion, intimacy and comfort: “a yacht can feature the finest materials and highest quality finishes, but if the spaces feel too tight, disconnected or uncomfortable, the emotional experience aboard is lost” says Roberto Aboumrad, the founder and CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Custom Yachts (Company)">Alpha Yachts</a>.Hence, true onboard luxury is not measured by excess or scale alone, but by understanding the emotional relationship between people and space. Rather than pursuing narrow planning hulls, which are optimised for going fast, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Custom Yachts (Company)">Alpha</a> decided on a semi-displacement hull. “These hulls are designed for liveability, efficiency and comfort. There is more interior volume, while simultaneously cruising at speeds it was designed to (i.e. 10-14 knots).”Cruising at the speed that the yacht was designed to do, also ensures high fuel efficiency and long range cruising, which sits in line with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/YachtModel/12554" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Squalo 10030.02m (98'6&quot;)">Alpha</a>’s approach towards sustainability. “There’s a misconception in today’s market that, by adding more electronics and gadgets, you automatically create a better boat,” yet often the opposite is true. “The more complicated you make a vessel, the more things you create that require maintenance.” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Custom Yachts (Company)">Alpha Custom Yachts</a> instead focuses on “creating systems that are durable, intuitive and reliable for long-term ownership.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/395758/image/large-1424f9925cdca3c1115877f949e5d9c4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/395758">While keeping the number of gadgets to a minimum, technology does play a crucial role in any <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Custom Yachts (Company)">Alpha Custom Yacht</a>s vessel. “Technology is extremely important for us,” shares Roberto, “but for us technology means simplification.” Making elements more simple and functional makes for happy yacht owners. “It’s a mentality that extends directly into the crew’s workflow and maintainability.
