Designer and entrepreneur Manuela Lucchesi has established a new superyacht brand in Italy, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6700" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Centouno Navi (Company)">Centouno Navi</a>. Collaborating with naval architect <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Marco Arnaboldi (Company)">Marco Arnaboldi</a>, founder and former director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB Yachts</a>, which he created in 1992, the company will apply waterjet technology and sandwich composite construction for fast, planing yachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/225998/image/large-c841697d3367dda92a43b0812b17d01d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/225998">Based in Viareggio, the company has released two superyacht models capable of reaching speeds up to 58 knots. The hull is rigid and light, made with a carbon and glass fibre sandwich with a vinylster resin and PVC foam core. The shipyard, which has operated for nearly three decades, has faced significant financial challenges in recent years, with work halting on-site in Meppel for several weeks.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320173/image/large-53f349aa96150965369c15b57ac55c92.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320173"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> filed for bankruptcy after the shipyard’s sheds were emptied, leaving no boats in production. Curator Rienk de Vries confirmed to local news publications that the bankruptcy process is still in its early stages, with the potential for an acquisition still in place.&nbsp;"The bankruptcy is still fresh. The oil slick is not that big yet, it still has to spread, but there does seem to be interest," he noted, indicating that there are potential candidates interested in a takeover, with hopes to retain as many employees as possible.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255560/image/large-94c48888fcef698d75ab0d933383b59d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255560">Holterman Shipyard</a> currently employs fourteen individuals, all of whom are now facing uncertainty after work ground to a halt due to a lack of new orders. It is also believed that a rise in pricing of aluminium had contributed towards the shipyard’s financial difficulties, leading to mounting losses.“The director indicated that orders were declining. Partly due to rising prices of light metals such as aluminium, losses started to mount from 2022. The orders that were needed to fill the gaps did not materialise. ICOMIA and SRSA forge strategic partnership to boost Saudi Arabia’s yachting industry

For our latest Entrepreneur in Yachting feature, Francesca Webster sits down with her friend Mariangela Oliveri to discuss her luxury linens business <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>. Established in 2011, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> has evolved into one of the premier sustainable linen companies for the yachting and aviation sectors over the past decade. We explored its inception, the challenges Mariangela faced in establishing a sustainable business before sustainability became a trend, and her conviction that quality and service are the keys to success in the superyacht industry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331994/image/large-c16f54ec63cb14a14d02590c1d28c25c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331994">What was the origin of the business and what is your background?&nbsp;Throughout my business degree my goal was to set up a company within the realm of luxury materials so I approached every class during my five year degree as an opportunity to develop the business plan. In fact, the original concept for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> was the final essay at university, so although the company was founded in 2011, it had really been with me for years before then.&nbsp;After university, I decided that before establishing my own business, I needed to learn how to work within a team and to grow in practical experience. It felt presumptuous to assume I had all the answers without appropriate training, so I joined a company in Asia for five years importing luxury furniture design manufacturers. During that time I learnt how to work with different people, from various backgrounds and cultures and it taught me the skills that you need in order to manage your own team and your own clients. It was an incredible learning experience and gave me the opportunity to work in a varied and complex environment, and after five years I returned to Italy and began the research process for the business. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331999/image/large-21757ca123fc9e37a78d60e699868147.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331999">Why did you decide to focus on high-end, sustainable linens?&nbsp;I’ve always had a deep passion for quality and for me Italian linen is the supreme material with an amazing heritage, however the sustainable approach was not in my original concept. I wanted to offer the lineage of linen with a modern twist, but I didn't yet know what that twist was. I am an observer by nature and when I returned from Asia in 2011 sustainability was beginning to become mainstream, with eco foods in supermarkets for example and the demand was increasing . Sustainability was also becoming a buzz word in the media and I could see that it would only increase in significance, so I decided that founding the business with a truly green heart would set <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> apart from the rest of the market. That is when the struggle really started.At that time it was impossible to find refined sustainable fabrics. Everything on the market was rough and completely unsuitable to luxury linen products. That was a period of frustration and of almost giving up because once I'd set my heart on the sustainable element of the business there was no way that I was going back. It became absolutely central to my belief in the company.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331998/image/large-5f21af1057a168c58caf722e89ffeb08.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331998">How did you overcome that hurdle?I met with the owner of Italy’s largest fabric producer, and after an eight hour meeting managed to convince him to invest in a certified sustainable production line. He said, “If I can't convince you to change your mind about this approach in eight hours, you must be able to see something I haven't seen yet, so we will try it.” That was an amazing moment. Two years later, he had certified the entire production line of the company and had become one of the first sustainable fabric suppliers in Italy.&nbsp;So your investment in creating the business sustainably delayed the foundation of the company – why did it become so important to you?The answer is twofold. The first is ethical, but the second was strategic. I could foresee that sustainability would become an important factor of businesses in the future and fortunately reality has shown that my instinct was right. The decision to create a certified business from the ground up also means that everything we do is done in a sustainable way – our materials, work standards and business practices are routinely reviewed to ensure that we are maintaining the certified standards. When I see companies today launching ‘sustainable lines’ I know that it is greenwashing. You cannot be sustainable in one collection, it is a hypocrisy, either you believe in it and practise it throughout your business, or it is a gimmick to sell your products.&nbsp;What are some of the challenges you’ve faced since establishing the business?Well, aside from the initial challenge of finding the suppliers, we have faced many challenges in the past 13 years. Our first line was a kids bed linens collection because I thought mothers would be sensitive to the sustainability aspect, but it really didn't go as expected. I invested a lot of money and almost went broke. I realised that the market wasn’t ready for the sustainable topic to be the main focus of the business, so I developed the business model focusing on the concept of Italian quality, with an international service approach.&nbsp;Italian’s make wonderful products, and Made in Italy still carries a lot of weight internationally, but Italian companies are not good at marketing, customer service etc. So I decided to focus a lot of investment in our service offering, utilising my international experience to create something different and that is how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> came to the yachting industry, where quality and service are most recognised.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332000/image/large-90fdc1caae0a58aa21af956ebab21436.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332000">When did yachting linens become the focus of the business?In about 2013 we decided to approach the yachting sector, making our first sales in 2014 and pulling the company out of some challenging financial times. Then things progressed quickly because we secured <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a> as one of our first clients. In fact when I went to Benetti to pitch our business, they had an array of linen suppliers on show, but by the end of our meeting we had secured our position as the exclusive supplier for the shipyard and that really established our relationship with the yachting sector.&nbsp;What do you think they saw in your products? What set&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>&nbsp;apart?The quality of every single detail. Every piece that carries our label is checked by hand right down to the stitching because I want my team to be proud of every piece. Our know-how is precious to me and we will never supply our products under someone else’s label.The company is also completely self financed, so there are no investors telling me to cut budgets and increase production at the sacrifice of quality. I will make no compromises and that is really important to who we are. I also think that the most important thing when you’re an entrepreneur is that you involve everyone in your dream. From your suppliers, to your employees, you have to make them believe and in order to do that, you have to truly believe in yourself and in what you're doing. He notes that while small batch production can lead to variability in mechanical properties and might require more layers to match traditional materials' strength, the commitment to experimenting with these materials has already led to significant improvements. Crowninshield. Renaming her Cleopatra’s Barge II, he painted her black with a white boot-top and a gilded stripe, inspired by the original Cleopatra’s Barge of 1816, which was owned by his family and reportedly “America’s first yacht.”&nbsp;Francis and his wife, Louise Evelina duPont Crowninshield, sailed aboard Cleopatra’s Barge II&nbsp;until 1942 when she was acquired by the US Navy for coastal patrol during the war. After the war, Francis refused to reclaim her, believing she had been ruined by naval operations.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332326/image/large-6d7422a3cf76d092c5882e7ff839f0c4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332326">Passing through several owners, the schooner was listed as Gee Gee III in 1946, according to a supplement to the 1939 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd's Register</a> of Yachts UK. She remained in Boston until 1950 when she was registered in the 1950 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd's Register</a> of American Yachts, as Evening Star by John P. Hazzard, from Morehead City, North Carolina. During this period, she received a new diesel engine, a Bermudan staysail rig, and new sails.By 1955, she was renamed Guinevere and registered in the 1955 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd's Register</a> Of Yachts, as in New York, under Mrs Edgar Palmer. She was then sold in 1960 to charter captain Walter Boudreau, who renamed her Le Voyageur and offered sailing charters in the Caribbean.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332323/image/large-92033a00497110a31ce9c846f9a53b79.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332323">Despite this, after just five years, Boudreau was talked into selling her to one of his charter guests. He later regretted this decision and bought her back in the late 1960s, this time renaming her Janeen, after his daughter. Janeen was eventually sold in 1975 to Carlo Monzino, a great art lover, who renamed her Kebyar and owned her until 1979. The boat reached Monaco in the autumn, where she underwent another quick refit that was to last till summer 1976.In 1979, Italian publisher and film producer Alberto Rizzoli purchased and renamed the yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> again. This also marked the start of her restoration journey at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4793" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri Navali Beconcini (Company)">Beconcini</a> shipyard in La Spezia, Italy. Between 1979 to 1982 she was completely dismantled and reconstructed, with everything restored, except for her original interior and her schooner staysail rig, which was fitted in 1949. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332324/image/large-485a026400200cb1c7cb57be698ad0dd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332324">Alberto Rizzoli continued to sail <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> until the end of 1988 when he sold her to a Neapolitan, Wolf Chitis. Six years later, she was sold to American Thomas J. Perkins by Mike Horsley of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>; and upon finding another vessel already registered as Mariette, he renamed her Mariette of 1915. Perkins appointed Tom Eaton as skipper, who convinced his owner to restore the boat to her original topsail gaff schooner rig.&nbsp;The original plans and data of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> were obtained from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where Nathanael Greene Herreshoff’s archives are held. Using these plans, her rig was constructed by legendary rigger Harry Spencer of Cowes and installed at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4793" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri Navali Beconcini (Company)">Beconcini</a> yard in Italy. In spring 1995 her hull was repaired again, as well as modifications made to her deck, with her wheel placed into a sunken cockpit. By the summer of 1995, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> was competing in Mediterranean classic yacht regattas under her new rig, earning many awards and accolades, before being sold again in 2005.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/252022/image/large-0b1abc54fc5a92a9b9423fe9af8e91f4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/252022">In 2000, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> completed a major refit at Tréhard in France, which saw her sails replaced, before she made her first visit to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a> Falmouth facility in February 2010 for a pre-summer refit. She returned for minor works in spring 2012, &nbsp;ahead of the Pendennis Cup. In autumn 2017, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mariette 42.06m (137'12&quot;)Herreshoff1916">Mariette</a> returned to Falmouth for a more extensive refit, in partnership with her crew. Her walls are adorned by beautiful wooden panelling, intricate golden light fixtures, and artworks centred around sailing. She can comfortably accommodate up to six guests across three sumptuous staterooms, all finished in her traditional interior styling.
