Va Bene’s 9 month facelift heralded a success

Refit

Va Bene has just emerged from Pendennis after a 9 month multi million dollar refit. The refit has been heralded a complete success by the owner, his team and the yard. The 47.5m (156ft) motor yacht built in the Netherlands by Kees Cornelissen in 1992 has undergone an amazing transformation since arriving at the yard last September. It was delivered on schedule in early June, even though the schedule of work on the vessel had grown by 15%.

The work programme carried out on board was a comprehensive upgrade and in some cases re-working of both the interior and exterior spaces. On the exterior the yacht has had a complete re-paint, a reconfigured sun deck area heavily influenced by the owner’s requirements and the decking on two of the three decks has been completely replaced.

Her remodelled interior will provide contemporary luxury and elegance for 12 guests in 6 beautiful ensuite staterooms. The owner’s stateroom was completely stripped out and re-configured by Struik & Hammerslag under the direction of the yard to a H2 Interior design. The new owner’s suite now includes a large bathroom - with separate bath, walk in shower, double hand basins and separate toilet/ bidet, a walk in closet and large office that converts into a bedroom for up to three children.

Each of the other five staterooms on board were given a face lift with new fabrics for the deck head and bulk head panels, new mirrors, lighting, as well as replacement bedding and soft furnishings. In the VIP suite the entire full width bathroom was removed and replaced with modern fittings and limestone décor.

Directly below the owners cabin is brand new crew accommodation complete with a larger crew mess, this work was driven by the extensive work being carried out above and the need to modernise this space to meet class requirements.

In the days leading up to the yachts departure the finishing touches to her interior were completed these included new artwork and sculptors going on display, the final installation of a brand new state of the art audio visual system by Arcam and the installation of luxury bespoke carpets running the whole length of the yacht.

Engineering was equally a key focus of the refit and no stone was left unturned - below the water line the shafts were drawn, the propellers were renewed, stabilisers and bow thrusters checked and serviced. A permanent soft patch was installed in the engine room through the lounge and the generators were removed for rebuilding. Following this, all of the other equipment within the engine room was removed for servicing – including air conditioning plant, the watermaker, pumps and compressors.

Just before the yacht left Tyrone Harvey, Pendennis’ project manager on M.Y. Va Bene commented “M.Y. Va Bene has been a pleasure to work on. The success of the refit is down mostly to the clear lines of communication between ourselves, the captain, owner’s representative and the owner himself.”

He continued “The owner and his team put 100% trust in us as a yard to manage the project and complete the yacht to a high standard - it has paid dividends for them.”

Nick Line the owners representative and onshore manager added "Undertaking a refit of this magnitude is always a stressful exercise, however the team at Pendennis, especially Tyrone Harvey, our project manager went out of their way to make the process simple as possible, we worked together to set realistic goals and Pendennis re-delivered on time despite an increase in the scope of work.”

He Continued “Pendennis welcomed the crew of the yacht and made it possible for both crew and yard workers to work alongside each other to achieve the objectives. The owner of the yacht and I are very pleased with the end result and Va Bene will be returning to Pendennis in the future."

Va Bene is available for charter through Burgess in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean with charter rates starting from $238,000 per week excluding expenses. Contact Burgess, London: +44 20 7766 4300 / [email protected] / www.BurgessYachts.com.
