Van der Velden signs joint venture with Autonav

Business

Van der Velden Marine Systems in the Netherlands has announced a joint venture with Canadian company Autonav for the delivery of advanced components for its rotary vane steering gear. The new Van der Velden® Commander steering gear will incorporate the second generation of compact rudder actuators designed by Paul Wagner. Deploying such advanced technology and design strengthens Van der Velden’s position in manoeuvering technology.

Van der Velden® Commander rotary vane steering gear is ideal for all commercial oceangoing vessels as well as superyachts and inland ships. It is available in rudder angles from 2 x 35 degrees to 2 x 70 degrees and over a torque range from 25 kNm to over 1600 kNm.

The simple, robust and compact design of the steering gear and the fact that it only has one movable part ensures trouble-free, maintenance-free operation for over 60,000 hours (20 years). Significant cost savings will be the obvious long- term result.

“The launch of the new generation of Commander rotary vane steering gear is excellent news for all our customers,” says Gerrit Spekman, Chief Executive Officer at Van der Velden Marine Systems. “The advanced design principles demonstrate how we are focused on the distinctive operational demands of the high tech vessels of today and tomorrow."

“As the most comprehensive steering system available on the market, the steering gear benefits from our experience and competencies in all types of high performance rudder varieties and steering gear. All this is backed up by Van der Velden’s global support network, which ensures short lines of communication between customers and local offices.”

The integrated rudder carrier is a part of the actuator. Bearings are designed to take the full vertical load of the rudder and rudder stock, with no additional rudder carrier being needed. The rudder shaft is connected with compression rings to a straight shaft, which eliminates the costly machining of cones and keyways on the rudder shaft. Complex and time consuming hydraulic nut and hydraulic injection assembly is also eliminated. The Van der Velden® Commander rotary vane steering gear meets the requirements of classification authorities through the world.
