We posed this question to Perry and Niels and the response was unanimously ‘passion’. As Perry added, “We will always continue to develop and push toward more sustainable solutions for our industry, it is at the core of everything we do, truly within the DNA of this company.” For both of them the industry move toward sustainable solutions has been a long-time coming but while the industry has dragged its feet, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a> team has been innovating.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/71071/image/large-7eafcdd5c022e6de682cf9adc65c52f4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/71071">With 20% of the company's time invested into independent research and development, and all of the employees encouraged to follow their own threads of innovation, it is no surprise that the architects continue to be at the forefront of the sustainability conversation. Pioneering solutions such as the Hull Vane and FDHF are the result of their intense focus in R&amp;D and the company’s recent involvement in the Dutch government’s Project MENENS programme is yet another example of the commitment to future-proofing the industry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/229109/image/large-3ed8fbf533d096f2b7f7100fd33e1ecc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/229109"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a> became involved with the Project MENENS programme to further the Dutch government’s ambition to have 30 emission free vessels sailing by 2030. Focusing on the use of artificial intelligence and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a> has been working to further optimise the FDHF form, “We are actually already able to achieve the 40 percent reduction in emissions through the application of the Fast Displacement Hull Form XL, which can be applied to both superyachts and commercial vessels.” The company's aim now is to have emission free yachts sailing by 2030 – they are already well on their way to achieving this goal.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/229107/image/large-954aa0beb27943e525c79925516a073e.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/229107">While the government has committed to cover 40 percent of the costs of the research, the rest of the funding is being provided by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a> themselves, a clear demonstration of the company’s commitment to the goal. We asked Niels why Van Oossanen was open to such a major financial commitment. “One of the very interesting things about this project is that there are partners involved working on the entire lifecycle of a vessel, from research to construction, meaning that there are build partners already involved. There are yachting industry shipyards, commercial shipbuilding companies, suppliers and even the Dutch Navy is part of the project. It is vital for us to be able to offer our clients the best possible options for their yachts and we must safeguard those clients interest for the long term, that is our aim.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/229199/image/large-3f4c1b09126ad046f92a051089e5b66e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/229199">Another major focus for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a> team over recent years has been the development of methanol as the future alternative fuel for the maritime industry. While much has been said in the media about hydrogen, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a> and its partners believe that methanol holds the brightest prospect for zero emission propulsion as Niels commented, “methanol has been slightly overlooked in our industry and our aim is to create the technical platform that can be employed for methanol yachts and vessels. In addition, you can produce green methanol from the bi-product of other industries, such as grain, and that adds another cyclical layer into the fuel production-use cycle.”&nbsp;Both Niels and Perry recognise that the conversation around alternative fuel options, electric, hydrogen and methanol, all face limitations, namely the lack of infrastructure to produce and store the fuel ashore. However, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a> has dedicated a huge commitment to the development of such systems so that when the infrastructure is in place, they will be ready to engineer vessels that can accommodate methanol and its systems.&nbsp;The company’s commitment to research and development with methanol is absolutely demonstrative of the wider commitment at Van Oossanen to innovate within the sustainability sphere. The initial acquisition investment cost the Italian company around 40 million euros, while over the next three years, a further 40 million euros will be needed to craft new production spaces and an R&amp;D centre.&nbsp;This acquisition underpins the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group’s</a> ambitions and growth strategy, with this recent facility looking to enable them to increase their production by 20%. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group&nbsp;</a>CEO Alberto Galassi explains how this “acquisition keeps a promise” as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> “have big plans and picture a state-of-the-art production site from every point of view: worker well-being, positive social impact, and environmental protection.” The new space is conveniently close to their Forlì headquarters and Cattolica shipyard. Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> buyers were, on average, 56 yet post-lockdown years, this age now stands at 48 – a significant decrease that brings a “new mindset to the yachting industry”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/178254/image/large-41061535f69fe7ca1d2c1b710787f63e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/178254"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> has found that their average buyer is not only younger but is now spending twice as much time on board, with estimates as high as 120 days per year. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> reports strong financial health and remarkable growth across all areas in 2022 compared to 2021, with a net revenue of over €1 billion in 2022.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260867/image/large-5e5d5c3dcbe40ce54198eb723f80f847.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260867">The Italian-based group reports a strong order book for 2022 with an intake of €1.162 billion, up by 19.6 percent in comparison to 2021, which the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> pins down to a strong global market demand. They have also won a significant number of orders during this period with a backlog of €1.296 billion, up by 27.6 percent compared to 2021.&nbsp;The impressive order backlog breakdown comes from composite yachts, made-to-measure yachts and superyachts, as well as other businesses, including ancillaries. The majority of the backlog comes from composite yachts, which reached €439.3 million, making up 42.6 percent of total revenues in 2022.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/205162/image/large-55c378269a7c50145cf5561442898726.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/205162">Overall, the net revenue for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> reached an impressive €1.030 billion for the period ending December 31, 2022 - a 14.6 percent increase to the previous year where <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti</a> capped out at €898.4 million.&nbsp;Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amoritisation (EBITDA) was up 36.5 percent as the firm hit €102.6 million, with an EBITDA margin of 14.1 percent. They also have a net profit of €60.5 million, which amounts to a growth margin of 6.1 percent from last year. This increases 170 basis points compared to 2021 at 4.4 percent. &nbsp;The Group’s net financial position improved from €93 million of net cash in 2021 to €365 million in 2022. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220951/image/large-395cb676eccc2227c5cd58d5e78808e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220951">"These exciting results describe <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group’s</a> glorious present and tell the story of its future. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> is an Italian shipyard with a dynasty that spans the best part of a century. Despite being founded in 1945 in Limite sull’Arno to build and repair smaller yachts, by 1956 the yard was moved to Darsena Pisana as it had started signing projects too large for its facility.&nbsp;The shipyard has had an illustrious history, delivering more than 700 yachts &nbsp;– the largest of which being the 43.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1655" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cap de Quers43.6m (143'1&quot;)Cantieri di Pisa2006">Cap de Quers</a>. The 27.43-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nasima 27.43m (89'12&quot;)Cantieri di Pisa2012">Nasima</a> was the yard’s last build, and following her delivery in 2012 the yard closed and was finally sold.&nbsp;The shipyard was bought 18 months ago and is back in business, with a fleet of new projects under its new leadership. SuperYacht Times sat down with CEO Marco Massabò to hear all about it.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260833/image/large-8899422b8b6ae0ea4429c0654f8f493f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260833">What is your background prior to&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>?&nbsp;Yachts have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My father was a wood master and started working at a shipyard in Imperia, Italy, 70 years ago. I love boats and have professionally sailed for many years, competing from the Optimist to the Maxi yacht regattas – I’ve had a long collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/758" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="North Sails (Company)">North Sails</a>.&nbsp;In 1992 I met Luca Bassani, founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a>, and worked alongside him for 20 years. The brand was missing a refit yard in Italy, so I bought and founded one (WS Shipyard) in Savona. It's been very successful. I then moved into consultancy around 2010, working with clients both in yachting and shipping.&nbsp;I was working with some major players – it was a nice life. But around a year and a half ago, Enrico Gennasio (president and owner of the Alfagomma group) told me he was going to buy <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>, asking if I wanted to work with him.&nbsp;A great opportunity. I immediately got to work, spending time with naval architects and exterior designers, dreaming up the best yachts we can bring to market. The shipyard had great energy, and a number of great international designers came to visit us. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259110/image/large-dc2f2a0d48808d14b563a945716e4215.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259110"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>&nbsp;is back building yachts. Do these new models reflect a new vision?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> is an iconic brand. We’re not here to change the rules, we want to rewrite them. The yachts that we’ve started to build are different from what <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> traditionally did. But we also want to be different from our competitors.&nbsp;Rather than starting from aesthetics, our primary interest is weight. We want to save as much weight as possible, to build and deliver some of the lightest yachts on the market. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> yachts are fast, agile, and incredibly sleek and all have shallow drafts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/258737/image/large-8913f6c24d1edd5383a600b3c775dbbb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/258737">The 25m 80 Veloce – the first&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>&nbsp;yacht since 2012 – is scheduled for delivery this year. Can you say a few words about her?&nbsp;The 80 Veloce is our first yacht. We wanted to build something that embodies our new philosophy – and she’s crazy fast! She’ll be equipped with three 2,000 horsepower V12 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1441" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MAN (Company)">MAN</a> engines that deliver a top speed in excess of 60 knots. The series has been well received and we already have clients signed for the second and third hull.&nbsp;She’s not for everyone though – which is why we’re about to present a Gran Turismo edition to the market. The 80 GT is based on the same lightweight hull yet with a more family-focused design. She’ll also be equipped with two engines, not three. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/258738/image/large-72d27a22a4c507d152fcab6398958f5e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/258738"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>&nbsp;also presented the new Akhir series. Has this model line been well received and are you considering building on speculation?&nbsp;The Akhir series is a new design for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> which is offered in three sizes: a 31-metre, a 37-metre and a 42-metre flagship. Much like the 80 Veloce the idea is to keep the weight down as much as possible. The series has a contemporary design and we’re in talks about whether to build the first unit on speculation – it might happen, but I can’t confirm either way at this moment in time. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259105/image/large-50b2769c2995a007591094d39d092014.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259105">Why is weight such an important topic for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>?Any sailor will tell you the importance of weight – they just will. I’ve personally sailed around the world on some of the world’s most important and fastest boats, and every time their core attribute was weight. However, shipyards and designers rarely consider weight early on when they’re planning a new project. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> does things differently, it’s my absolute credo. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259106/image/large-848f31e2855eb67f5df5c8156f48eba3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259106">Choosing to build light implies a commitment to delivering yachts with shallow drafts. How else are you trying to maximise this across all your series?&nbsp;We’ll equip both the 80 Veloce and Gran Turismo series with waterjets. Waterjets are the safest way to arrive at high speeds and they can go in really shallow waters. And to overcome issues of sucking up sand (a particular issue in Miami), we’ve added a special sea chest. It's a simple, not crazy innovation.&nbsp;Coming from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a>, I of course have taken inspiration from their model lines and I especially like what they’ve done with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> 118 Power – the James Bond yacht. But I’ve also listened closely to my friend and naval architect, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Marco Arnaboldi (Company)">Marco Arnaboldi</a>, who designed many fast boats, including the CDP80 veloce. He’s one of the best in the world when it comes to waterjet technology. We decided to follow him on our design – there isn’t anyone better! <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259100/image/large-e738a900d681e7e9b00f4677cfafd4fd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259100">An automotive designer and America’s Cup engineer collaborating on your designs. How did this come about?It’s simple. We want speed and performance, so why not bring in the best? A typical motor yacht goes around 18 to 20 knots, yet a high-performance America’s Cup sailing yacht reaches speeds of up to 40 knots – it’s a big difference, even if you factor out the foils. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> we want to use this knowledge to study the possibilities of reducing as much drag as possible with our yachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260834/image/large-1241be498043c5a2ee330d299e207c7c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260834">For the past 18 months,&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>&nbsp;has focused exclusively on refits. Why?&nbsp;We weren’t ready for new builds until now, we needed to establish ourselves. When we took over <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>, it hadn’t been operating for 10 years. We invested around €1.5 million to renovate the facilities and in the past 18 months, we have worked on 27 yachts, which brings a good level of return for the business: building capital and our reputation.&nbsp;Working as a refit yard has also put us in direct communication with many captains, which is great for our Research &amp; Development. For the past 18 months, we’ve been learning the trouble points and how to build a perfect yacht, designed for the captain.&nbsp;We’ve continued to invest and we’ll soon announce a new facility.&nbsp;

Our current facilities are next door to each other and enable us to provide services for yachts ranging from 6-76 metres in length. We are also growing our new yacht and brokerage sales operations, representing new brands as their exclusive dealer.&nbsp;For the time being though, we’re focusing on our current market, as we are in the yachting capital of the world. But we have every intention to build our brand and reputation further; we plan to serve our customers in new markets as well.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260712/image/large-db3707bd4ed6c38e0b6164bab1c2aed4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260712">With a lacking inventory of good yachts on the market, have demands for refits been at a high these past years? And how do you expect 2023 to play out?&nbsp;For sure the demand for refit will continue as the supply of new yachts is backlogged and the needs of the clientele continue to evolve. We anticipate a higher number of refits this year and are preparing internally for any project we are approached for. Refitting involves many moving parts, in our geographical area there are only a handful of shipyards capable of hosting these projects. We’re ready!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/239416/image/large-993378b890d6d6d1a47e09f039023d88.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/239416">Have supply chain issues now subsided, or are there still many challenges to contend with?Whether it is the backorder of parts or the sparse technical support for unique components, I have found that supply chain issues are a constant occurrence in the yacht industry. Mainly there are a limited number of suppliers and a limited number of qualified technicians for installation and repairs.&nbsp;Having navigated the industry for more than 20 years, I understand where there may be issues and can plan ahead to avoid delays. In addition, I have built strong relationships with suppliers and vendors. It is a small industry and having strong relationships is a big advantage. One day you help a supplier and the next day they help you. Abeer Al Shaali, the Chairperson of the Leisure Marine Association MENA, and Capt. Abdullah Alhayyas, the Director of Maritime Transport Affairs Department at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) on March 2, 2023 at the Dubai International Boat Show. The ceremony was attended by H.E. Hessa Al Malek, Executive Director of the Maritime Sector at the Federal Transportation Authority for Land and Maritime, and the Board of Directors of the Leisure Marine Association.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260516/image/large-c027e70c598eed031d7d0f45d0a31ab4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260516">The Leisure Marine Association, based in Dubai, is a marine trade association that represents the interests of the boating and yachting industry and is an advocate for the leisure marine community across the Middle East and North Africa. The UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is one of UAE’s federal entities, responsible for spreading public awareness of energy conservation. These two organisations signing an MoU, a nonbinding agreement that states each party’s intentions to form a new partnership, will accelerate the growth of the leisure marine industry in the UAE, a vital contributor to the region’s maritime sector. A family business at its core, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen Naval Architects</a> has been a household name in the maritime industry since its founding in 1992 by Dr. Ir. Peter van Oossanen. In 2001, Perry Van Oossanen, Peter’s son, joined the company and brought the business firmly into the limelight of the superyacht industry with the pioneering creation of the Fast Displacement Hull Form. Today, many superyachts are conceived with the revolutionary hull and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a> is credited with the creation of one of the most efficient pieces of engineering the industry has seen in recent decades.We caught up with Perry to discuss the history of the company that he has inherited, the evolution of the business over the last two decades and critically his creation of the FDHF and the implications it has had for the industry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218526/image/large-4a9e4c72d916159c74714db737a60419.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218526">First off, can you give me a little historic background of the business and how you came to join it in 2001?Before the business was founded by my father, Peter worked at MARIN (Maritime Research Institute of the Netherlands) where he was head of the department of advanced ships, including yachts. We really came into the industry through the sailing and racing yacht industry and he was involved in many America’s Cup projects over the years. During his time at MARIN he built a solid reputation and it was off the back of that experience that he founded <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen &amp; Associates</a> – as the company was originally named.&nbsp;Initially the business was focused on consultation about all aspects of yacht engineering, from propulsion to vibration and hull form, and gradually that grew into a full spectrum naval architecture studio.&nbsp;When I left school I first wanted to join the Dutch navy, but ended up (certainly for the best) studying naval architecture and following my studies I joined the family business in 2001. At the time there were only three people in the team but we’d begun to garner a reputation for our theoretical knowledge which really pushed us ahead of our competition. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218525/image/large-bfb694519bd62d16b25d945ff25053a0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218525">Building on that, what was it that really brought&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a>&nbsp;to the top of the industry and can you tell me more about the development of the FDHF?I think the most valuable thing that we bring is a deep and unfailing commitment to research and development. We'd already been experimenting a lot with different hull forms and testing them out in the tanks and using the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) methods. By the time the financial crisis hit in 2008 we took the opportunity to innovate so that we could come out of it even stronger than before. Each member of the team created a pet engineering project and mine was the creation of a faster, more efficient hull form – that became the FDHF. As the project progressed we tested the hull out constantly and luckily <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen Yachts</a> were looking to create a faster superyacht with the project for Galactica Star, now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3676" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Illusion65.0m (213'3&quot;)Heesen Yachts2013">Illusion</a>. We showed them the results of our work and they immediately went for it, giving the project a flying start!&nbsp;With&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen&nbsp;Yachts</a> behind you, how did the rest of the industry react and did you expect it to gain the status that it now has?The first hurdle we had to overcome, of course after having the form used by a shipyard, was to take away the conception that the hull actually had a lot less space for the interior. Sure, we do like slender and sharp waterlines, but the FDHF allows for the same interior as traditional hull forms. Certainly people were a bit skeptical at first, it took about four or five years, but once <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3676" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Illusion65.0m (213'3&quot;)Heesen Yachts2013">Galactica Star</a> was launched in 2012 we had the best calling card that you could ask for!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218527/image/large-b40de9b232ebbb5799de86f87e009f5a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218527">For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a> as a company to turn to innovation in a time of difficulty seems to say a lot about the ethos of the business, is that part of what drives you forward as a company?It is really a passion at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a> and my business partner and I are really motivated by the discovery of new solutions. That has now become our business model and it really makes us stand out as unique.&nbsp;Annually we dedicate about 20 percent of our internal capacity to R&amp;D and a lot of that is dedicated to hull forms, though construction methods and propulsion systems are also a major focus for us. Typically we have around three to four big R&amp;D projects per year and we allocate our work force to those projects depending on their individual expertise.&nbsp;And how has the application of CFD software impacted the R&amp;D process and how does it compare to traditional methods such as tank testing?We have been using CFD since 2005, and we were one of the first studios to really employ it as a tool. Of course it is a true specialisation and now we have a supercomputer and a dedicated team of four people in the office that are dedicated to feeding the machine with different simulations in order to test our designs.&nbsp;In terms of the accuracy of the software, it has improved vastly over time and our skill has also grown. Now we can simulate pretty much any physical test with the computer and I do believe now that CFD is better than tank testing alone, which is not something I would have believed four or five years ago!&nbsp;Finally, the FDHF hull form has been credited as one of the biggest leaps toward a more sustainable yachting industry, were you conscious of this at the time of design?At the time our focus was really on speed and efficiency, of course efficiency comes hand in hand with sustainability but that was much less of a topic at the time. Today I believe it is absolutely crucial and that no vessel should be constructed without sustainability as a major consideration. While alternative propulsion systems are the talk of the industry right now, we have to accept that it is too limited to leave the conversation there, engineering and hull form are crucial.
