The final day of racing for the Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez 2024 took place on Saturday, with the winners of each Maxi class announced.

The Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez race got off to a promising start yesterday as the maxi fleet embarked on the opening races of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7139" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="International Maxi Association (IMA) (Company)">International Maxi Association</a>’s 2024 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge. In the first race, Jolt crossed the line one minute and 48 seconds ahead of Sir Peter Ogden’s 23.5-metre Jethou, followed by Giovanni Lombardi Stronati’s 25-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Django Unchained25.25m (82'10&quot;)Goetz Composites2009">Django HF</a> in third place. Despite being called over the start line early in the second race, Jolt still managed to finish first, reducing her margin to 57 seconds under IRC corrected time.Much like Jolt, Jethou also faced challenges. Designing a superyacht that challenges industry norms requires not just creativity, but also a deep understanding of the market. This is precisely the approach taken by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a>, when they conceived the idea for the Velarca 135—a 41-metre yacht that merges the allure of motor yachts with the elegance and sustainability of sailing yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/326252/image/large-c00ed26e9e250bf40ef13dc2fe07429a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/326252">SuperYacht Times sat down with founder Sami Lehtonen and Jarkko Härmälä of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> to find out more about the inspiration behind the Velarca 135 sailing yacht concept and the future plans for the company.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216497/image/large-3d9dd95f0c4dd4f965ac0f5c0ea44a80.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216497">The Velarca 135 yacht was first unveiled in 2022 as a sailing yacht that combines luxury with style and most importantly, takes into account the growing demand for sustainable yachting. Reflecting on the origins of the Velarca 135 concept, Sami revealed that the idea emerged on a sunny day in August 2021 in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto Park. Accompanied by an advertising agency and several bottles of champagne, the team were spurred by a bold vision. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242232/image/large-8fd4ddc1c0153b0949334960523201b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242232">“We knew that motor yachts dominate the superyacht market with over 90 percent market share, which also means they produce most of the greenhouse gas emissions. So, we decided there and then to start selling sailing yachts to the motor yacht clientele,” Sami explained. This marked not only the birth of Velarca 135 but also the formation of a business model that would allow <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> to enter the superyacht market, without a designer or shipyard already in place.One of the cornerstones of the Velarca 135 design is sustainability, a principle that Sami was determined to uphold without compromising on luxury. “Sustainability is a tricky word,” elaborated Sami. “Many luxury products have a longer lifespan because they are valuable, beautiful, and timeless. When asked about the design process, Sami recounted the strategic decisions that guided the yacht’s development. “We consulted well-known yacht brokers in the Mediterranean to understand what their customers prefer in terms of yacht size and amenities. We also prioritised safety and simplicity, ensuring that even a less experienced crew could manage the yacht with ease.” The design was then handed over to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>, who were given full artistic freedom. “In my opinion, the result was not only quite clever and practical, but also very pretty,” Sami added.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216494/image/large-d23ae9f9a161e73b660e7a5c5bafcac6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216494">The Isola Corvus vision and challengesAs a relatively new player in the superyacht industry, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> brings a fresh perspective, heavily influenced by Sami’s background in offshore racing. “We dared to do what we wanted without asking too many questions,” Sami explained, reflecting on the fearless approach that has driven the company forward. One significant innovation influenced by Sami’s racing experience was the rig design. “I was never a fan of the Chinese gybes, as the boom had the potential to cause damage or injury by slamming from side to side when jibing; so I wanted to eliminate the risks of this happening completely. The Velarca rig is simply a boomless, rope free, two masted solution, with two rolling and self-tacking jibs on each mast and a third jib in an inverted position between the two masts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216499/image/large-e6b6b2919ec59af2b44f6642ef4ec58f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216499">Despite their innovative spirit, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. “We didn’t have a designer or shipyard partner in the beginning, both of which are must-haves to even launch a design,” Sami admitted. However, a fortunate connection with Finnish superyacht hydraulics entrepreneur Nadine Proctor opened doors, leading to a partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>. “By January 2022, the design was ready to launch,” Sami recalled. The next challenge was finding a suitable shipyard, a process that ultimately led them to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5728" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Knierim Yachtbau (Company)">Knierim Yachtbau</a> in Germany, known for their expertise in building lightweight sailing yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216493/image/large-b5f0be620cd828b3d8d58c4e1938e36a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216493">“Velarca is structurally more challenging to build than a motor yacht, so the shipyard must have experience in building demanding lightweight sailing yacht designs,” Sami explained. He also highlighted Knierim’s involvement in the wind power industry as an added benefit that aligns with their sustainability goals.&nbsp;However, marketing a yacht that blurs the lines between motor yachts and sailing yachts presents its own set of challenges. The superyacht sector, however, seems more willing to experiment with alternative fuels,” Sami observed. He believes that the industry will eventually recognise the value of sailing and sail-assisted designs as viable solutions for reducing emissions.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> is already planning its next project, though details remain tightly under wraps. “Offering something different is paramount to us because we are still far from being a household name in this industry. The Maxi 72 yacht Bella Mente has been crowned as the winner of the third IMA Maxi European Championship. It’s not every day that one has the opportunity to visit shipyards in the Far East, especially in China. In June, the inaugural SuperYacht Times <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/events/asia-pacific-summit-2024-2024" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Asia-Pacific Summit</a> in Hong Kong provided a perfect occasion to explore regional shipyards and marinas. Recently, the Asia-Pacific region has been increasing its share in the construction of yachts over 30-metres in length.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332002/image/large-fea235340d9ae4c2209734e97934a880.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332002">During the summit, SuperYacht Times' Head of Intelligence, Ralph Dazert, presented the <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/market-reports/asia-pacific-superyacht-market-report-2024" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Asia-Pacific Market Report 2024</a>, which outlined this trend. According to the report, as of the beginning of 2024, builders from the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 509 out of the 5,787 operating yachts over 30-metres worldwide, representing a share of 8.8%. This positions the region as the third-largest superyacht construction area globally, following Europe (including Turkey) and North America. Moreover, over the past decade, the share of builders from the Asia-Pacific region has increased to 9.9%, with these builders delivering 159 out of the 1,604 yachts completed between 2014 and 2023. As a result, the region now ranks second after Europe, as the influence of North America has declined.SuperYacht Times Features writer Enrico Chhibber recently visited <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> at their facilities in Zhuhai, China, just before the commencement of the Summit. After a pick up in Hong Kong, Enrico met with Fiona Li, the head of marketing at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>, and was driven across the border towards Zhuhai.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332001/image/large-5cd01e6d8d238d387a69cdc8691186e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332001">Cheoy Lee</a> is one of the oldest family-run shipyards in the Asia-Pacific region, with a storied history. Originally founded in 1870 by the Lo family in China, the company relocated to Hong Kong in the 1930s. While the company maintains its head office and a small repair yard in Kowloon, Hong Kong, it relocated its construction facilities from Penny’s Bay to Zhuhai, China, in 1996. Since then, the Penny’s Bay site has been transformed into what is now Hong Kong's Disneyland.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220646/image/large-5477a925a390ad705be09ae7d33a0b6e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220646"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> has constructed numerous innovative yachts and was one of the first shipyards in the region to use fibreglass, notably on the 39.78-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3836" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nataly39.78m (130'6&quot;)Cheoy Lee1978">Nataly</a> (formerly Shango II), which was the largest fibreglass yacht ever built at the time of her construction in 1978. However, the yard's expertise extends beyond fibreglass; it also works extensively with steel and aluminium. Among the well-known superyachts constructed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> are the 46-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Avalon46.0m (150'11&quot;)Cheoy Lee2011">Avalon</a> and the 45-metre explorer yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2307" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Limited Risks45.0m (147'8&quot;)Cheoy Lee2007">Limited Risks</a> (formerly Marco Polo).Upon our arrival at the shipyard, we were warmly greeted by Martin Lo, the Director, and his nephew, Hans Lo, the Deputy Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>. Hans represents the fifth generation of his family to work at the company. They escorted us to the main meeting room, where Martin shared his background in yachting. Born into a shipbuilding family, his career path seemed a natural progression. He emphasised the importance of a family-run shipyard to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>'s identity. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/247078/image/large-b55615fc33411404935e67ddb8b13459.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/247078">In late 2018, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> underwent a strategic restructuring. The company's luxury production arm was rebranded as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6398" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CL Yachts (Company)">CL Yachts</a>, while larger custom builds continued under the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> brand. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> shipyards are focused on the production of commercial vessels, including offshore supply vessels, tugs, and ferries.Regarding the production ratio between commercial and pleasure yachts, Lo stated that at present it stands at 85% commercial projects and 15% pleasure craft. As for the yachts currently under construction, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> has two explorer motor yachts in the pipeline: the 39.73-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10701" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer39.73m (130'4&quot;)Cheoy Lee2024">Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer</a> and the 32.76-metre Cheoy Lee 107. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332003/image/large-040340f503dfd284944242680f218609.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332003">Lo then explained that the city of Zhuhai and the surrounding area has developed into a hub for the production and refit of commercial vessels. Additionally, he mentioned that some local shipyards have recently started to venture into yacht construction.When asked about the state of the domestic yacht market, Lo explained that the majority of yachts built in China are intended for international markets. He specified that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>'s primary clientele has traditionally been in North America, with additional clients in Europe. In 2022, the company broadened its international footprint by appointing a dealer in Australasia, SE Asia, Hong Kong and Middle East. .<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/182372/image/large-00a4e228745d20b66ec42741673de3d5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/182372">As we commenced the tour of the facilities, we viewed several commercial projects along with the 39.73-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10701" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer39.73m (130'4&quot;)Cheoy Lee2024">Cheoy Lee 130</a>, currently under construction for a returning client. She has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, and features exterior design and naval architecture by Overing Yacht Designs, while her interior was penned by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sylvia Bolton Design, Inc. (Company)">Sylvia Bolton Design</a>.&nbsp;During our tour onboard, it was evident to see Lo’s passion for yacht building and emphasis on quality. He shared that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> had formed a partnership with Genesis, an Italian furniture company based in Tuscany, to supply parts for the yacht interiors.
