Christensen Shipyards launched their first Custom 43M Series project, superyacht Missing Link this week. This project was sold to American buyers in 2012. The shipyard has released the following video detailing the momentous launch for the company, starting with the move from the fabrication facility to the launch site, moving on to the ballasted transition from land to dry dock, and concluding with the launch. Chief Technical Officer at Formula One’s Red Bull Racing team, Adrian Newey OBE has chosen to partner with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster Yachts</a> to build his new sailing yacht. The Formula One legend has hopes of sailing the world with a new-build <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> 885 yacht model.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294220/image/large-b5e7bbdfef37bf62a371d2c01fb6f637.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294220">The 27.4-metre sailing yacht is currently in-build at the shipyard’s Southampton-based headquarters. The sailing yacht's interior derived from the drawing boards of her UK-based builder, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a>. Showcasing a four stateroom layout, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> 885 model can accommodate up to eight guests onboard, with space for a crew of four.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294226/image/large-a8c09a5e0e146a93b2aaa6f021a6e7fe.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294226">Commenting on the collaboration, Newey stated that working closely with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> Project Manager Matthew Townsend allowed him to “exercise his engineering brain” to form design solutions to personalise the yacht. Alterations have included some re-designing of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> 885’s interior living space to meet his requirements. In addition, a folding leaf into the aft swim platform has been added, enhancing the exterior space for alfresco dining.<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/887318824?share=copy" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe>Regarding performance, Newey was interested in moving to a more natural method of transport which drew him to the “purity of sailing”. Keen to operate a vessel that minimises generator use, Newey harnessed his design and motor racing experience to create a hard top bimini. Update 10/11/2023: REV Ocean Foundation has now made the following statement about the continuation of works on the 182.9-metre yacht;&nbsp;"An agreement on completion of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6355" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean182.9m (600'1&quot;)Vard Group AS2024">REV Ocean</a> vessel has been reached with the shipbuilder <a href="http://www.vard.com/" target="_blank">VARD</a>. To ensure the functionality of the vessel, the vessel will be lengthened by 12 meters and modified in certain areas. This results in reduced cleaning requirements, making it a popular choice among captains and yacht owners. Additionally, having the 3D model in place opens up new possibilities, such as creating a digital twin for various purposes, including conducting analyses related to noise, vibration, CFD and structural aspects. We understand that transitioning to this new way of approval may not always be straightforward, as some designers are more accustomed to working with traditional 2D drawings. However, our platform is adaptable and accommodates both 2D drawings and 3D models.
