From concept to completion, the new 4,300-tonne shiplift at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">MB92 La Ciotat</a> was four years in the making at a cost of at least €70 million. A truly international venture, the project brought together contractors from half a dozen countries to resolve the many logistical, engineering and environmental challenges. We take a closer look at how it was done.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261587/image/large-039002e970e80a7ca246214bed1d7e09.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261587">It is difficult to appreciate the sheer scale of the new shiplift in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">La Ciotat</a> unless you’re standing on top of it. The platform itself is 100 metres long, 20 metres wide, 2.7 metres deep and weighs 1,100 tonnes. It is now open for business, but the total redeveloped area covers 40,000 square metres and construction work continues on the peripheral infrastructures.The design and construction of a shiplift is composed of four principal activities: civil works, lift and transfer systems, platform fabrication, and installation followed by commissioning. The most cost-effective approach is for the shipyard to act as the general contractor and issue separate contracts for each of the activities. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261585/image/large-76295cb817ddfe17c4cc27eb302e3055.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261585"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">MB92 Group</a> divided the cost of the shiplift with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">La Ciotat Shipyards</a>, the public company that manages the port area, but has spent an additional €13 million on adjacent facilities. The total stake represents a formidable asset for the refit shipyard, which can now host up to six more 100-metre plus superyacht on the hard, adding to an infrastructure that already includes a 2,000-tonne yacht lift, 600-tonne crane, 300-travel lift and 200-metre dry dock.&nbsp;Installing a shiplift in La Ciotat had been envisaged by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">MB92</a> ever since it acquired a majority stake in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5474" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CompositeWorks (Company)">CompositeWorks</a> in 2017. Work got under way the following year with preliminary simulations in compliance with French regulations and safety codes to determine the optimal size of the shiplift based on the land area available.“Every increase in lifting capacity is accompanied by an exponential increase in cost, so the final 4,300-tonne capacity represents the best balance between cost, commercial opportunities and the space we had to work with,” says Joe Degabriele, Senior Business Development Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">MB92 La Ciotat</a> tasked with commercialising the shiplift.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261582/image/large-57990f9cf95d2e2aaa6476f37e7ec399.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261582">Bardex Corporation, a US-based specialist in heavy load handling and positioning equipment, was contracted to oversee the design of the shiplift and transfer systems. In order to better understand the local business culture and practices, Bardex chose to partner with Matière SAS, a French engineering and construction company.“The design process starts by understanding the client’s needs and objectives for the facility, says Robert Taylor, senior structural engineer at Bardex. “We also investigate the site setting, access to and from the facility, the yard arrangement and the geological conditions. All of these inform us about the types of foundation system, yacht transfer arrangement and implementation plan that is most appropriate for the project.”Weight-liftingShiplifts are all about are speed and efficiency. In La Ciotat the entire process of lifting and positioning a yacht on the hard takes less than three hours, whereas the same procedure in a traditional graving dock requires the best part of a day. A shiplift can serve multiple parking places, but a dry dock usually hosts just one vessel at a time.&nbsp;The shiplift relies on very different technology from classic winches and cables. The Chain Jack Lift system is widely used in military shipyards for lifting warships and nuclear submarines. Powered by hydraulic rams, a chain jack hoists by engaging and pulling in a short length of chain, engaging a stop pin, retracting and repeating the process. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261584/image/large-53a9dbfa280b0d59027c0314124af81d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261584">The system offers more precise movement of the platform than wire ropes or cables, which are prone to stretching (Lloyd’s requires 20 per cent of wire ropes to be removed and destructively tested each year and all wire ropes to be replaced every 5-10 years). La Ciotat has 20 chain jack units, 10 on each side of the pit, and each has two closed-loop chains for 100 percent redundancy.The lifting procedure is complex because it involves coordinating the motion of 20 devices connected to the same platform. The system moves one pitch, or two links of chain, each cycle for all 40 chains (factory tests show that the movement of the chain jacks can be coordinated to within one millimetre of each other). The entire lift system resets every cycle, which prevents the accumulation of differential elevation. To ensure all the units are working in perfect synchronisation, remote sensors relay the parameters in real-time to the central command system.“Hydraulic cylinders are ideally suited to shiplift operations because their movement is consistently precise,” says Taylor. “Bardex has further improved the synchronisation by equipping the lift stations and control system with hydraulic feedback motion control. This technology is widely used in heavy industrial robotic automation applications that require high precision motion control, such as special-purpose arc welding robots.”To guarantee an uninterrupted supply of electricity, the lifting system has its own dedicated substation with transformers supplied by the French division of the German company Schneider Electric. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">MB92</a> invested in a further three substations for the supply of reliable shore power to the yachts and for refit work.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261583/image/large-4166e0e83d90ea707fb10360c701a083.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261583">Running on railsBuilt by Metallic Bridges Belgium (MBB), the actual platform had to be delivered by special transport. When a yacht enters the lifting pit and the chain jacks are activated, it comes to rest on a modular cradle that can be adjusted to suit the size of the vessel (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">MB92</a> ordered four such cradles from Schwartz Hautmont in Spain). As in a graving dock, divers assess that the ‘mating’ between hull and cradle is a snug and secure fit.&nbsp;Once the platform has been locked at ground level, the next phase is to transfer the yacht sideways off the platform and then longitudinally to a hard-standing space. Four-wheel bogies or trolleys constructed by Bardex Industries in South Korea are aligned under the cradle. The bogies, which have a passive hydraulic suspension system to raise the yacht and its cradle over the top of the chain jack units, run along 6.5km of intersecting rails built by Bemo Rails in The Netherlands and can change direction by lifting themselves off the tracks and turning their wheels 90 degrees. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261597/image/large-cd3dfe47b75870da76a82b08717ad440.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261597">The two axes of motion meant the rails and intersections had to be installed to a tolerance of +/- 5mm to ensure smooth transfers. Maintaining stability is obviously essential throughout the operation, especially when moving the yacht off the platform.“Transferring yachts laterally off the platform required careful coordination of the civil works, structural system and lift station elevations to ensure adequate clearance for the yacht and static supports to pass over the lift stations,” says Taylor. “This type of transfer operation also imposes unbalanced loads on the structural systems. Detailed engineering analysis and the use of hydraulically actuated pin supports were required to ensure the structure remains stable under this loading condition.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261598/image/large-46859a2c27c1aaa4e641dcc7c146976b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261598">There are five hard-standing places to the side of the platform and one in front of it (a 6th is a common area that can be used for short-term projects such as pre-purchase inspections). Once in position, the cradle is lowered to the ground, the bogies removed and the yacht hooked up to the shore power, fresh water and waste management systems. Anchoring points in the concrete are used for bracing scaffolding and tenting when the yachts need to covered. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261599/image/large-5e0187dde33c13a6e4b502b4da2f46b1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261599">At the time of writing, the shiplift and transfer systems were approaching completion before final testing and certification by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/554" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyds Ships (Company)">Lloyds Register</a> (shiplifts come under Lloyds’ Code for Lifting Appliances in a Marine Environment, excluding the civil engineering works). Despite the many technical and logistical challenges, the shiplift was on schedule for its official inauguration in September.&nbsp;“The most difficult thing has been organising all the different companies around the world and up to 200 personnel working on site each day, especially during the Covid pandemic,” says Mathieu Bauden, the man responsible for coordinating the works as Facilities &amp; Storage Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">MB92 La Ciotat</a>. “But it’s a great source of satisfaction that when we signed this project four years ago, we decided to open the platform on 15 September 2022. And that is still the opening date.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261591/image/large-603e1e48173db47dc861262e8eaf1093.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261591">SHIPLIFT TRIVIA• The Syncrolift System was invented by Raymond Pearlson, who was later awarded the Sperry Award for his invention. The first Synchrolift in 1957 had a lifting capacity of 100 tons.&nbsp;• In 1967 Hydranautics, now Bardex Corporation, designed, patented, manufactured and delivered the first shiplift using chains instead of wire rope.&nbsp;• The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze in Central China has a shiplift for transferring vessels up to 3,000 tonnes across a vertical distance of 113 metres. The ship chamber has a pool of water 120 metres long by 18 metres wide and 3.5 metres deep.&nbsp;• The world’s largest shiplift dedicated exclusively to yachts is the 4,800-tonne shiplift at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92 Barcelona</a>. Dasha Moranova Designs presents Senses: A holistic AI-driven wellness project

After first announcing its Bzero sustainability initiative two years ago, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> has presented a shore-based prototype of a green hydrogen production module that will be at the core of its onboard fuel cell technology. The presentation was made during an event entitled “Bzero - Working for an evolving future” at its shipyard in La Spezia that was opened by inspirational speaker Giancarlo Orsini, who provided insight into current ‘megatrends’ such as sustainability, innovation, technology and energy. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265403/image/large-ea3df5b6225da929fba704623e4d0ff3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265403">“We have set up <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> Energy, a department specifically devoted to studying new eco-sustainable technology and the implementation of alternative energy sources in the boating industry,” said Baglietto CEO Diego Michele Deprati. “The Bzero project is an important starting point, but also the gateway to the sustainability challenge of the future.”The Bzero system assembled on one of the shipyard’s quays is basically a 1:1 scale prototype that after intensive testing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> plans to install on its hybrid diesel-electric yachts in the T52 and T60 lines. The prototype will be used to develop operational and bunkering procedures, optimise technical solutions, and obtain the necessary <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1457" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RINA (Company)">RINA</a> certifications required to use the system on board a yacht. The power station will also partially contribute to the shipyard's energy production cycle, including a recharging station for electric cars.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265402/image/large-d67c4ebbb37b493601473f4bd31a8f0b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265402">The hydrogen production module runs filtered and de-ionised sea water through AEM-type electrolysers (approx. 55kW total), powered by energy from solar panels and/or the shore power grid, to produce hydrogen with 5.0 purity grade at a maximum pressure of 35 bar. The PEM-type fuel cell module (approx. 200kW) uses the hydrogen as fuel to silently and sustainably generate zero-pollutant electricity.The hydrogen produced is safely stored in solid state in metal hydride cylinders &nbsp;at low pressure (35 bar) and room temperature &nbsp;– the most compact way to store hydrogen. due to the chemical reaction between metal and gas. The hydrogen is chemically bonded or absorbed by the metal, without the need for compression. Instead, the solid metal hydride works like a sponge that absorbs and releases the gas. While heat is released during hydrogen absorption, heat must be added for release &nbsp;and the thermal energy required comes from the heat produced by the fuel cell module. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265404/image/large-fa66b16ea19c42047a28b1949d78a29f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265404">The process of storing and releasing the hydrogen from the hydrides is managed by a thermal management system during hydrogen discharge and charging. The electricity produced by the system is controlled by a DC/DC converter installed on a central 700V DC bus previously tested on Baglietto's hybrid yachts. A set of lithium-ion batteries, connected to the same bus, in parallel with the fuel cell, is used for peak shaving when demand spikes.Together with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a>, six international partners are participating part in the Bzero project: Arco Technologies, Bluenergy Revolution, Enapter, H2Boat and Siemens Energy, as well as the classification society <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1457" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RINA (Company)">RINA</a>. Other technical sponsors include AutroItalia, Methydor, Precision Fluid Control and Tempco.“The combination of hydrogen and batteries will result in four times more available energy than that provided by current batteries, which will also mean great savings for the owners," commented Fabio Ermetto, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> CCO, pointing out that 80 percent of clients are now interested in building a hybrid yacht, up from 20 per cent just two years ago. The primary motivation is ethical, closely followed by the increase in range and onboard comfort that such systems provide.&nbsp;As a practical example, Ermetto’s presentation included a slide of a hypothetical yacht with a hybrid system comprising a battery bank of 1,400kWh and hydrogen storage of 196kg (equivalent to 3,100kWh) for a total energy output of 4,500kWh. This would allow for up to 120 nautical miles cruising at low speed or 75 hours at anchor in zero-emission mode and total silence.

The Middle East isn’t restricted and has a limitless horizon, and we’re witnessing some incredible growth and development in the region, not only in yachting. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254358/image/large-f9fc1e6c6a0be3c87effc320f64dfc48.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254358">What role has&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6814" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Medasia Marine and Yachting (Company)">Medasia</a>&nbsp;played to help facilitate this growth in the Middle East?&nbsp;We’re already firmly established in the UAE with offices in Abu Dhabi, and are starting to concentrate more efforts on Saudi Arabia. It’s prosperous as a region yet lacking both in infrastructure and knowledge to facilitate the demands of yacht tourism. The Red Sea Development Company, which forms part of the Saudi Vision 2030, is well aware of this and recently approached us for consultancy support. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6814" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Medasia Marine and Yachting (Company)">Medasia</a> has then been activated with licensing and infrastructural change to bolster the region.&nbsp;It’s an exciting region and we have many clients there, so it’s a logical move for us. There’s huge potential. As you may know, the Saudi 2030 Vision is driving many initiatives to develop the nation as a superyacht destination, and we’re looking to capitalise on that. It’ll take some time before Saudi Arabia really sees the benefits for yachting in the region, but it’s definitely moving in the right direction.&nbsp;Jeddah, in particular, is growing spectacularly and we’ll soon open a new office located in the very heart of the city: Jeddah Marina. It's a question of how we all embrace change. The yachting industry has to change, especially with the growing number of new and younger buyers entering the market.&nbsp;Soon I strongly believe that around 30 - 40 percent of the yacht fleet will be owned by those in their late 20s and early 30s. It’s a big number, and this is a generation where Web3 and advanced technology is just another facet of life; the industry has to accept and embrace it.&nbsp;

But this can only go so far. The choices made in original specification, design engineering and construction pedigree all play a part. And at a time where technology is advancing alongside the energy transition and the pursuit of Zero, future-proofing will become increasingly important.&nbsp;However, future-proofing does not only impact asset resale protection. Many owners are equally concerned with their yacht meeting sustainability ambitions relating to reduced footprint, reaching Zero, and avoiding becoming outdated in the face of changing future regulation. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251704/image/large-c9adbe559bc473b0c557e4ad17ca4cd7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251704">Committing to ChangeAs the lifespan of a superyacht can span three, four or more times that of a commercial ship, a yacht built today will need to be adaptable through the course of its lifetime. So should we be asking ourselves which technology and fuel to commit to when designing and then building this new yacht? In reality, the better question is probably to ask how we can create an adaptable architecture onboard so the yacht can be practically modified through the decades, in line with evolving and emerging Net Zero solutions.&nbsp;Future-proofing is something that is already being carried out by owners of ships in the commercial marine market, even with their far shorter lifespans. What is evident from observing market dynamics and industry insights from this sector, is that owners and operators are still heavily hedging against future outcomes. The majority of future-proofed tonnage already in service or on order is following a strategy of dual fuel. Onboard technology is not and will not be a limiting factor here, as we anticipate the commercial availability of various systems that operate on a broad spectrum of fuel types from different production methods in the next three to eight years.&nbsp;What is clear is that we can’t expect the commercial side of our industry to offer yachting a one-solution-fits-all model. The energy transition will take place across multiple routes, with complex decisions to be made along the way, and we will undoubtedly end up with a wide range of solutions to achieve our collective Zero goals. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251705/image/large-f5ee446a589b1f78cb45f4ab70179022.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251705">Building Tomorrow's Superyachts, Today&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> is investing in future-proofing our yachts to offer technical solutions that are highly adaptable through a yacht’s lifespan, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> providing through-life energy transition support along the way.This is not just a question of being environmentally consciousness as an industry. It is an existential matter for yachting. Failure to provide acceptable solutions could impact engagement with coming generations of owners and their families, who expect greater efforts to be made to reach Zero.&nbsp;Riding the WaveFuture-proofing a superyacht requires us to anticipate the future in order to enable informed choices of layout, configuration, technology and specification that will avoid becoming outdated within the intended lifespan of the yacht. Riding the wave of energy transitions is the greatest challenge we face in this context.&nbsp;Let’s imagine the energy transition timeline. At the far end is a non-carbon-based fuel such as liquid hydrogen. This offers an extreme future view of zero-carbon yachting with fuel that can be authentically produced using technology that is available today. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>, together with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral Naval Architects</a>, explored this point on the spectrum with its 2019 Aqua design, a 110m motoryacht powered by liquified green hydrogen. Research into such technology is continuing at both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a>, in collaboration with a range of industry partners. However, commitment to a specific fuel such as hydrogen carries a commitment to investment in associated infrastructure to actually run the yacht. As such, it may not suit the majority of yacht owners.Consider the current state of the art, represented by all-electric DC architecture. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> is convinced that an advanced all-electrical architecture is an enabler to the use of future fuels, but it is not strictly necessary to pursue a future fuel right now in order to be future proof.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/206885/image/large-6ce524fe4c919263d789b8991d4e11bc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/206885">New &amp; Improved Batteries Sold SeparatelyWe can be certain that battery technology will advance to offer greater capability in the future. So implementing a significant degree of battery capability within a yacht’s overall energy architecture will lead to improved system performance in future years. Additionally, the capacity for emissions-free (including carbon-free) operation should form part of a future-proofing strategy, which is best served via a battery-based solution.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> has a number of new-build projects that represent this current state of the art. Together with Lateral, it has explored other near-term developments, namely an advancement of diesel electric known as e-Hybrid where batteries form the core energy delivery, enabling significant ‘local zero’ operation. This system was integrated into the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> NXT design, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/52585" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco reveals KAIROS: the next generation of yachting (2021-03-23 14:00:00 +0100)">KAIROS, which was launched in partnership with Lateral and Pininfarina in 2021</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/211765/image/large-fe4710a96ff6f3b9ef14676f417b9fab.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/211765">Adaptable Three-Phase Approach&nbsp;Between these current state-of-the-art solutions and the far-term end of the transition spectrum lies a significant period of time when we will experience a range of solutions, each a step closer to Zero. This spectrum could potentially span over 30 years, and so today’s future-proofed yachts will need to be configured so they can adapt to the various technical solutions emerging along the way.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> is now engineering for this transition, presenting solutions so a yacht can evolve alongside the energy transition:PHASE 1: Starting life as a state-of-the-art (synthetic) diesel yacht, it will feature efficient dimensions relative to gross tonnage and highly optimised baseline with DC grid, variable speed generators and podded drives incorporating batteries, or e-Hybrid configured. All systems onboard will be fully procurable, state of the art, operable and warrantable today. The yacht’s design will incorporate all elements of architecture needed to accommodate transitional fuels, such as methanol. The yacht design and energy architecture represents a compelling, low-risk purchase in today’s market.PHASE 2: As future technology matures, the yacht can transition via a mid-life upgrade of low impact to a dual-fuel solution, with a low risk to the client. The timing of such a mid-life upgrade would be dependent upon advancement of technology and commercial risk.PHASE 3: The yacht would achieve a Net Zero end state solution via transitioning fully to alternatives such as methanol driving fuel cells or internal combustion to power electrical architecture.Future-proofing for the energy transition is one of the greatest challenges we face to ensure that our yachts remain state of the art across an expanded timeframe, and with the pace of technology accelerating, that requires a smart solution. Reducing risk by opting for an adaptable architecture is the most promising option for an owner wanting to ride the wave of change onboard their superyacht, all the way to Net Zero.&nbsp;
