With over five decades of maritime experience, Yılmaztürk has ventured into the leisure yacht market, launching the brand Mishi Yachts. The admiration she garnered laid the foundation for the Mishi Yachts brand.The insights gained from personal sailing experiences have profoundly shaped the design and functionality of Mishi Yachts.Transitioning from constructing military and commercial vessels to pleasure crafts represented a bold strategic shift, primarily driven by my vision to meld luxury with an exceptional sailing experience. The shipyard has its own design office, where the Multi-Role Tactical Platform (MRTP) concept was developed. This innovative concept has facilitated the production of over 180 vessels globally, with the inaugural vessel still in active service.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5300" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yonca Shipyard (Company)">Yonca Shipyard</a> has a production capacity of 20 military boats and 20 pleasure crafts annually. Our expansive facility covers a total area of 44,000 square-metres, with 22,000 square-metres dedicated to enclosed spaces. These improvements are designed to increase comfort and functionality for extended cruises, ensuring the Mishi 102 meets the needs of our customers seeking more space for their sailing adventures.Does the use of composite materials impose any limitations?We have the ability to construct larger yachts, and our use of composite materials presents no limitations. With 38 years of experience and over 180 boats in service, our expertise and advanced technology enable us to manufacture larger yachts without compromising quality. Francesca Webster sits down with Michele Dragoni to discuss the development of his studio, recent explorer yacht projects and his plans for the future.Since founding his new studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5977" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dragoni Design Lab (Company)">Dragoni Design Lab</a> in 2020 Michele Dragoni has been gradually upscaling his yachting projects, this year launching his largest yacht to date, the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10739" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bee35.4m (116'2&quot;)ART Shipyard2024">Bee</a> Yacht from the newly developed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7697" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ART Shipyard (Company)">Art Shipyard</a>. We sat down with Michele to discuss his studio’s diverse portfolio of projects, the opportunities that sub-24m yacht builders pose for designers as they upscale, and his thoughts for the coming years. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/342175/image/large-82ff02788c9077d316f8e53cb0a35b50.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/342175">How has the studio evolved over the past year and how does it feel to have the first big yacht in the water?The biggest step for us has been getting that first yacht in the water. Though we have been working on this project for four years, until it's in the water it is challenging to demonstrate the range of the studio. We now have another two plus-24 metre custom yachts in-build, with the next due to be launched next year and the most recent, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7578" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tribale Yachts (Company)">Tribale</a> 120 Gran Turismo, only announced in earlier this month. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/327649/image/large-62f06eb92ae86dd7b1d4d3fb7312f2c5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/327649">As we move forward, the portfolio of the studio is being split between these larger custom and semi-custom projects and the production yachts that have been a great success for us since we launched. At this time, shipyard work in the production sector takes around 75% of our focus, with a large portion of that in fibreglass. Luckily we’ve been involved with some really interesting yards such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5305" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Solaris Yachts (Company)">Solaris Power</a>, which is a great position for us to be in. As the yards expand their own portfolio, it gives us a chance to also develop larger models. For example, we are now developing two 27-metre explorer models for Manda Yachts, the interior of the S09 and the exterior and interior of E09, who we have worked with since they entered the market, on various projects such as the interior of their 16-metre S05 series. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/327646/image/large-63679a5d3321205e50707f7a07af20b0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/327646"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/327647/image/large-bf5c264f4f402a08dccafd507eca9e8e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/327647">We have also developed a solid relationship with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5305" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Solaris Yachts (Company)">Solaris</a> which are fully designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5977" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dragoni Design Lab (Company)">Dragoni Design</a>. We are now in the process of finalising two 21-metre models for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5305" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Solaris Yachts (Company)">Solaris</a>, the crossover 70 Long Range and the 70 Grand Coupé.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/314721/image/large-80d8cbab3b349ea9358a53f7ce9577b9.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/314721"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/314723/image/large-7cba8c21934e2fcea270eecbad6057a1.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/314723"> <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/342189/image/large-a7624851700af46f88b5f0a0e585b191.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/342189">How has the studio evolved over the past few years and what do you see for the future?The main thing is that we’ve been working on many of these projects since the start of the new studio: my target has been switching from the previous company to this new one without stopping my pencil, but it is only now that the bigger yachts are being launched that people can see we really mean business. I am very satisfied with this progression, because when I founded the studio it was a gamble, but now I can see that it is working. We have some exciting yachts out there already in the powerboat segment and with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10739" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bee35.4m (116'2&quot;)ART Shipyard2024">Bee</a>, the 35-metre explorer, we are stepping up.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322786/image/large-feb9c2048623b206dc7dd91f0e7ea344.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322786"> <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/342174/image/large-7bb8a5c870b9e23dcdc06982fc0e688d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/342174">What kind of challenges does this segment of the market pose for you and the yards you work with?The main challenge within this segment – say from 20-30 metres – is that you are competing with some of the industry's biggest players such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> and Blue Game <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>. This means that we are always working to create something unique and focusing on creating unusual volumes and aesthetics has been an interesting challenge for me and the studio. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309302/image/large-f84f69f74933abb93cb82cca72857c2b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309302"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5305" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Solaris Yachts (Company)">Solaris</a> has been very successful and I can see that their position in the market is already quite solid so it will be exciting introducing these two new models in due course. One of the other challenges is of course managing the availability of space and the opportunity to diversify the design of smaller yachts. When you work with larger yachts you are essentially designing within a white box, but powerboats are an entirely different game, with no straight lines and lots of curved edges. While this is challenging, it also offers an interesting opportunity to push ourselves to create something unique. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/314725/image/large-a76aac1fa11f13373dd4b2cd37a03b8d.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/314725">You mentioned Manda Yachts, can you tell us a bit more about this yard?Manda is a new player in the market and they have been developing their range with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4701" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ceccarelli Yacht Design (Company)">Ceccarelli Yacht Design</a> for the exterior and engineering and us for the interiors. The company is based in Naples but the yachts are built on the Adriatic and they are looking to enter into the pocket-explorer segment of the market. The 27-metre E09 is a particularly interesting project with impressive volumes, a large amount of glazing and a neutral interior aesthetic. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/342172/image/large-33072515b1610ae1a95f5adb4c1ae6f6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/342172">The first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7697" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ART Shipyard (Company)">Art</a>&nbsp;yacht&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10739" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bee35.4m (116'2&quot;)ART Shipyard2024">Bee</a>&nbsp;was launched this summer, can you share a bit behind the development of this project?This has been an interesting experience for us and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1181" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hydro Tec (Company)">Hydro Tec</a>, who did the exterior design and the engineering. Developing a completely custom interior for an unknown shipyard might seem ambitious but actually <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7697" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ART Shipyard (Company)">Art</a> is a very significant and historic commercial yard based in Tuzla and they have all of the necessary construction expertise in-house. So from the construction and engineering perspective the yacht is extremely solid and the reception has been very positive already. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309306/image/large-f08e625cdffd014ed1856e3375527473.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309306">On the interior design side, the owner was looking to create a bright and spacious yacht that spoke of its legacy as a Turkish superyacht and set the standard for the yard’s future projects. We played a lot with the balances of light onboard this yacht, using quite a bit of white to open up the volumes.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309308/image/large-419b375cf9b40e54dbdbfc548c264d0b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309308">During the design development process I spent a lot of time in Turkey, visiting the museums and galleries of Istanbul and collecting motifs and design inspiration that could be integrated into <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10739" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bee35.4m (116'2&quot;)ART Shipyard2024">Bee</a>’s interior design. For example there is a glass motif in the main saloon that is inspired by a very famous Turkish artist, and there is a leaf motif in the master stateroom that is also recognisable as an Ottoman filigree from Istanbul. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309311/image/large-92b4c3ee23a4c58f6fc3febb4a02fbfd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309311">Creating a study around every project is part of our process and something that informs all of the work that we create. Kennedy.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13377" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Honey Fitz28.35m (93'0&quot;)Defoe Shipbuilding Co.1931">Honey Fitz</a>; a name that is well-known in U.S. history, as a vessel that was once used by five former U.S leaders. The 28.35-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/753" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Defoe Shipbuilding Co. (Company)">Defoe Shipbuilding</a> motor yacht carries nearly a century's worth of stories onboard – some whispered amongst the walls of political power, others exchanged in the quiet moments of family gatherings. Her history is as rich as her polished mahogany interiors, echoing with the footsteps of presidents, dignitaries, and some of the most influential figures of the 20th century.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328199/image/large-bd1f00240aec81391548c4913ce84928.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328199">Launched in July 1931 by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/753" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Defoe Shipbuilding Co. (Company)">Defoe Boat and Motor Works</a> in Bay City, Michigan, USA, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13377" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Honey Fitz28.35m (93'0&quot;)Defoe Shipbuilding Co.1931">Honey Fitz</a> was designed by renowned naval architect J.A. Defoe, a man known for his attention to detail and his ability to blend form with function. Commissioned by American businessman magnate Sewell Avery, she was built from humble beginnings. Originally named Lenore after Avery’s daughter, she was his private escape, a refuge from the pressures of running Montgomery Ward &amp; Co, one of the largest department store chains in the United States at the time and was primarily used on Lake Michigan by the family. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/327971/image/large-96e0ef4e22cfb663b7a3fb4b201a04e3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/327971">Requisitioned for War ServiceHowever, on 15 August 1942, the U.S. Government requisitioned Lenore, repurposing her for use during the Second World War. From here, Lenore was assigned to the United States Coast Guard where, like many luxury yachts of the time, she was transferred to a yard in Curtis Bay, Maryland and converted for military use.By then renamed CG-92004 and refitted for wartime duties, she spent the next few years patrolling the waters along the East Coast. During this time she was assigned to various duties, including coastal picket patrol at Rockaway Point and Fire Island, New York, as well as detachment duty with the Comsublant (Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic) headquarters in New London, Connecticut, where she aided officers in training preparations against enemy submarines. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/327960/image/large-f370c5d4e739752d02ea4ec6c2242074.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/327960">But it was under her later names that the yacht would become a floating symbol of American political heritage. At the end of the Second World War in November 1945, CG-92004 was transferred to the U.S. Navy. At this time, she was stationed in Washington D.C. and served as a tender for Franklin D. Roosevelt's 50.3-metre presidential yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5303" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Potomac50.3m (165'0&quot;)Manitowoc Shipbilding Corp1934">USS Potomac</a>, before she was passed on to President Harry S. Truman in 1945.During the presidency of Truman, the vessel was renamed Lenore II, a nod back to her previous name before the war. However, when she was placed under President John S.D. Eisenhower’s ownership in 1953, she was renamed Barbara Anne after his eldest daughter. Barbara Anne underwent significant refurbishments during this time and was used by the first family for various events, such as the President and First Lady's 42nd wedding anniversary on the Potomac River and as a tender for the U.S. Navy gunboat USS Williamsburg to carry the secret service. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328214/image/large-c92f234fd621de8352a29bba0e9b75ca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328214">Kennedy’s Floating RetreatBut it was under the John F. Kennedy administration that the vessel truly gained her place in the annals of American history. Just like his grandfather John F. Fitzgerald, Kennedy had a deep affection for the sea, which led to the vessel being named in his honour, as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13377" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Honey Fitz28.35m (93'0&quot;)Defoe Shipbuilding Co.1931">Honey Fitz</a>. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13377" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Honey Fitz28.35m (93'0&quot;)Defoe Shipbuilding Co.1931"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328204/image/large-80f011e74839a2265026782397232d26.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328204">Honey Fitz</a> was refurbished according to the First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy's tastes and was frequently used for family trips along the East Coast. The vessel became Kennedy’s personal retreat, a place where he could escape the rigours of the presidency and spend time with his family. During his time in office, the yacht was often seen cruising the waters off Cape Cod, with his children playing on deck, and his wife, Jacqueline, lounging in the sun. Amongst some of the guests <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13377" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Honey Fitz28.35m (93'0&quot;)Defoe Shipbuilding Co.1931">Honey Fitz</a> welcomed onboard were, the former Prime Minister of Japan Hayato Ikeda and former United Kingdom Prime Minister Harold Macmillian. The yacht’s intimate but luxurious setting provided a stark contrast to the more formal spaces of the White House, allowing for open, candid discussions between some of the most powerful figures of the time. After Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13377" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Honey Fitz28.35m (93'0&quot;)Defoe Shipbuilding Co.1931">Honey Fitz</a> continued to serve subsequent presidents, including Lyndon B. Johnson, who honoured President Kennedy by retaining her name as Honey Fitz. During the administration of Richard Nixon in 1969, the yacht underwent refurbishment and was renamed after Nixon’s daughter Patricia. However, by the 1970s, with changing tastes and advancements in security, the use of presidential yachts fell out of favour, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13377" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Honey Fitz28.35m (93'0&quot;)Defoe Shipbuilding Co.1931">Honey Fitz</a> was retired from official service. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328209/image/large-084c90d2b4026a71a6c32d95304c1b76.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328209">Nixon decommissioned the yacht and put her up for sale, stating that it was a needless luxury. The yacht was sold at auction in 1971 and was passed into private hands once again, marking her first civilian owner since Sewell Avery in 1931. Her new owner, Joseph B. Keating, renamed the yacht The Presidents and chartered her for dinner parties and day cruises. But by the late 1990s, the yacht was put up for sale at auction once again, after falling into a state of disrepair. The Kallop family hosted many charity events onboard Honey Fitz and chartered her once again along the East Coast. Despite numerous attempts at topside repairs, she began to fall back into a state of disrepair and sat dormant for several years.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13377" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Honey Fitz28.35m (93'0&quot;)Defoe Shipbuilding Co.1931">Honey Fitz</a>’s story is one of elegance, transformation, duty, and above all, resilience. Her comprehensive refit, which was overseen by Charles R. Let’s start with your background. Can you tell me a bit about your career journey and how you came to join&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a>?Absolutely. My career started in the manufacturing and logistics industry. I’ve been a CEO and General Manager in those fields, with experience in shipbuilding and machinery as well. However, my deep-rooted passion for the sea comes from my love of sailing – I’ve sailed all over the world, from Europe and the Mediterranean to Indonesia and Antarctica. So when the opportunity at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx&nbsp;</a>came up, it felt like the perfect puzzle piece fitting into place.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/339341/image/large-d70e476e7b6c981a7e0f1c5ee5c735b2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/339341">That’s fascinating! How did your passion for sailing start?Well, my parents say I was practically born in a sailing boat! I’ve been sailing since I was a baby, and I spent about 25 years running a sailing school. I’ve always had friends in the maritime world, and they’d often ask me to help with navigation. I’ve sailed everything from small boats to large tall ships with 30 or 40 sails. I’m also on the board of a project called School at Sea, where we take young people around the world on educational sailing trips.So how did you transition from sailing into the corporate world?My educational background is in Technical and Business Management. After that, I studied Interim Management &amp; Economics at Nyenrode Business University, which provided a strong foundation for a career in business. I then entered the manufacturing industry, and over time, I worked my way up to leadership positions, including being the CEO of several companies. My first CEO role was 20 years ago, managing a stainless steel company specialising in high-end machines and constructions.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265887/image/large-08f22435c82cabef8dc14324f70b4802.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265887">What attracted you to your new role as the CEO of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a>?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> has been a professional pioneer in underwater experience for over 20 years, and the company is now entering an exciting phase of growth and scaling up production. When the founder, Bert Houtman, approached me, the challenge was clear: to take this niche, innovative product and grow it into a more mature, experience-focused company. I’m excited to help expand not just in the luxury yacht market but also in cruise ships, resorts, and research applications.What struck me immediately was the niche nature of the product. Building submersibles isn’t like making something people need every day – it’s more of a luxury, leisure product. Yet, we aim to make the oceans accessible to as many people as possible. It’s about creating a production line for something that’s highly specialised and not necessarily a “need” in the traditional sense.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/339339/image/large-275d0ddd458b3b79ee667a4805f57259.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/339339">Given that&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a>&nbsp;is in the luxury market, how has the company been impacted by global crises, such as the pandemic?The pandemic affected certain markets, like the cruise industry, but we’ve diversified. We don’t only focus on private yachts; we also supply submarines to resorts and research organisations. Diversifying helped us weather the storm. What’s surprising is that the financial crises didn’t significantly impact the superyacht industry. It’s a unique market, somewhat immune to the typical economic ups and downs.Speaking of growth, what are some of the company’s most recent developments and future goals?Besides building one-off, customised submarines, we are introducing a full-fledged production submarine. Our two-person NEMO submersible is built more efficiently, allowing us to produce faster while maintaining our core values of safety, leisure, and comfort at a more attractive price point. Safety and reliability are always the top priorities, followed by ensuring an enjoyable experience. We have production facilities in the Netherlands, and while we aim to use mostly Dutch materials, every piece of our submarines needs to be tested and certified, which is an incredibly rigorous process. To get a full experience of the underwater world, we have a Sub Centre in one of the best places to dive: Curaçao! That’s where we give demonstrations, train pilots, and do the deep-sea testing.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265886/image/large-121dad5c5353db78afb936c90988fb6f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265886">You’ve mentioned that&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a>&nbsp;emphasises safety. With the recent media focus on submarine incidents, has that affected your business?It’s true that a recent tragic incident put submarines in the spotlight, but it hasn’t negatively impacted us. The media made a clear distinction between our fully certified submersibles and the uncertified operations of others. Safety is the core of our product, and we are very proud of our impeccable track record. Every submersible undergoes extensive testing and certification by external authorities, which reinforces our clients’ trust in our products.With plans to increase production, are you also expanding your team?Yes, we’re growing in all areas. We’re hiring more engineers, sales staff, and field operations specialists, including pilots and maintenance personnel. We currently have about 40 employees, many of whom have been with us for over a decade. CEO Bart van Nunen's vision for the future of U-Boat Worx

Emma Dailey sits down with Bart van Nunen, the new CEO of Dutch submarine manufacturer U-Boat Worx to find out what he has planned for the company.

"This is not a market like the automotive industry, which demands frequent product updates. Here, what you see being launched today was conceived four years ago," explains Francesco Paszkowski, founder of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/586" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Francesco Paszkowski (Company)">eponymous design studio</a> nestled in the hills of Florence.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/338360/image/large-645d04e955ff09d7eb76e85012d56a88.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/338360">Having been deeply involved in the yachting sector since the 1980s, Paszkowski has witnessed the transformation of the superyacht industry both in Italy and globally. His designs have been realised by leading shipyards such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tankoa Yachts S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>.Yacht design careerOriginally aspiring to design luxury cars, Francesco Paszkowski found himself unexpectedly drawn into the yachting industry, starting his involvement as early as 1986. Although initially having no direct connection to the nautical world, apart from time spent on sailing boats, he explained, "my fascination with the shapes of objects drew me into this field, leading me to join the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Arch. Tommaso Spadolini (Company)">Spadolini studio</a> in Florence where I began to learn the craft."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/290537/image/large-bfbdbf2f0d43233061c4f774307fb488.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/290537">Paszkowski spent four years at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Arch. Tommaso Spadolini (Company)">Spadolini studio</a>, initially focusing on rendering projects for Tommaso Spadolini. Over time, he became more involved in the design process, working closely with both Tommaso and Pierluigi Spadolini, the lead designer at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> shipyard, which eventually led him towards full-scale design.In 1990, Paszkowski took a significant leap by going independent and began visiting shipyards, starting in Singapore. "Back then, Singapore was not as developed as it is now, and I found myself working on a project for a Greek owner, which proved to be a significant learning experience," he recounted.Paszkowski's first major design opportunity came when he met Michael Breman, commercial director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> at the time. After receiving an invitation to showcase his portfolio, Paszkowski was tasked with designing the exterior of the 28.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> yacht, Opus 1 (now named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7825" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanis 28.6m (93'10&quot;)Baglietto S.p.A.1994">Oceanis</a>). He described it as a considerable challenge that also allowed him to immerse himself in the nautical culture. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/215894/image/large-e25839df542b3b62ce0c4c25949450ec.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/215894">At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> in Varazze, the unique learning environment created by the shipyard's craftsmen facilitated his comprehensive understanding of the project. This experience was instrumental in shaping his approach to yacht design. He then proceeded to work on the second, third and fourth yachts with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a>, eventually expanding his collaborations with various shipyards. This progression solidified his decision to pursue yacht design as his professional future.Work with international yardsIn addition to working &nbsp;with most of the major shipyards in Italy, his collaborations also extend internationally, notably in the Netherlands with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>. His initial project there was the exterior design of the 35-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1636" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Opus II35.0m (114'10&quot;)Heesen Yachts1997">Opus II.</a> Subsequently, he has contributed to four other projects, including the 55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vida55.0m (180'5&quot;)Heesen Yachts2019">Vida</a>, for which he handled the interior design, delivered in 2019. Additionally, Paszkowski has been involved in one project in Turkey with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise Yachts</a>, being responsible for the interior design of the 58-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1716" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baraka58.0m (190'3&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2010">Baraka.</a><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/296015/image/large-ab160971f57492b97b083d51121a6bf6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/296015">When asked about how his international experiences have shaped his career, Paszkowski reflected, "Working abroad has primarily broadened my mindset, allowing me to adopt diverse methods into my workflow, which significantly enhances my professionalism. (Company)">Baglietto</a>. Reflecting on the evolution of this relationship, he explained, "When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> was acquired by the Orsi family in 2000, I began working on a series of displacement yachts. Additionally, I designed the 42.1-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2792" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue Scorpion42.1m (138'1&quot;)Baglietto S.p.A.2003">Blue Scorpion</a> and, for the same owner, a 52.45-metre superyacht now called Mischief 1, which was delivered in 2006.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/169743/image/large-bf7c484400d77daf602b9cf988b3d967.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/169743">Despite the shipyard changing ownership around six times, Paszkowski described his ability to maintain his connection with the yard through these transitions. He stated, “I've often pondered this myself, as each new owner could have chosen a different designer. However, I consistently received reassurances that my role as the designer would remain unchanged, which highlighted the clear expectations of my contributions. Over the years, my designs have captured an essence that resonated well with the owners. They have consistently been prepared to continue our working relationship, recognising my efforts to maintain a distinct style.”Today, after more than 30 years of collaboration, Paszkowski continues to work closely with the company. "We have endeavoured to create designs that are referential to the world of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a>," he noted. He further added, "This has been a very interesting journey for me and continues to be a source of challenges for new products that I develop closely with the shipyard."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/270834/image/large-51ff803cfe3977d1fdf419638ada013e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/270834">The studio teamsReflecting on the origins of his working relationship with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6365" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Margherita Casprini (Company)">Margherita Casprini,</a> Paszkowski disclosed, “Initially, at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a>, I solely focused on exteriors. By 2005, when I began working with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, my workload tripled, necessitating additional support for interiors.” He added, “In order to address the increasing demand for interior designs we were receiving, I asked <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6365" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Margherita Casprini (Company)">Casprini,</a> an experienced designer who had worked at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Arch. Tommaso Spadolini (Company)">Spadolini studio</a>, to collaborate with us.In describing the operational dynamics at his studio, Paszkowski elucidated, "Roles are clearly delineated yet integrally connected. As the head of the studio, I focus on the exterior designs, supported by my team who manage the external aspects under my guidance. Margherita <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6365" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Margherita Casprini (Company)">Casprini</a> collaborates closely with the interior team. "This setup fosters a rich blend of experiences between the teams, enhancing the creative process and ensuring comprehensive design solutions that embody both interior elegance and exterior form," he said.Future plans and developmentsIn addition to briefly mentioning a potential collaboration with a French shipyard, Francesco Paszkowski highlighted his future developments involving a project with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> that was introduced in February 2024. This new model, dubbed XO, is an explorer yacht designed not just for seafaring but for a family-oriented experience of the sea. This innovative design features a unique capsule layout, with the helm positioned below and a lounge area above that provides panoramic views forward and to the sides during navigation. Paszkowski expressed a deep passion for this project, stating, "We are actively pursuing and will realise this innovative design. Emma Dailey interviews Mark Anastasia, the mind behind <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7564" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AquaBanas (Company)">AquaBanas</a> and the modern yacht slide, exploring his entrepreneurial journey and success in the luxury inflatables market.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331616/image/large-0dc93860b68fc7daf61e56b04f4d6cd9.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331616">How did you break into the luxury yachting inflatables market?Before 2009, there were a few yacht slides, but those were large, constant-air slides that required electric blowers. They were more dangerous to operate and much bulkier. So, I developed a sealed-air unit that hooks over the top of the yacht with a leg support. At the time, I was a consultant for Freestyle Slides, and was satisfying one of their customers’ requests. That’s the design that has really become popular today.It really blew up when <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/856" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lazy Z 51.8m (169'11&quot;)Oceanco1997">Lazy Z</a> took it to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show (Company)">Monaco Yacht Show</a>. All of a sudden, there was a huge wow factor. The Financial Times even featured it, which really helped with visibility. After that, yachts were lining up to enquire.So, my entry into the yacht space was lucky: right place, right time, right product. Everybody wanted it, and there were no barriers. If you go back to 2009, that’s when the toy category of superyachts was really just starting. As it turns out, luxury yacht inflatables are now a multi-million-dollar industry all over the world, so we were at the very beginning of that.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/336393/image/large-d8e0539055f0c5170effb1cab95666ea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/336393">Can you tell us about the journey of founding AquaBanas?The inspiration for inflatables wasn’t something that developed during childhood but rather emerged as an opportunity over 30 years ago around 1991 when a friend of mine from England wanted to manufacture these new interactive inflatable products in the US: bounce houses, sumo suits, Velcro walls, Gladiators, bungee runs, you name them! The first American-made sumo wrestling outfit was made in my garage. I joined forces with him and started manufacturing commercial inflatables at that time.Then suddenly, the big land slides arrived – 22-foot slides that weighed about 410 kilograms. I started a company to manufacture them in Orlando, Florida. That’s how I got my start. After co-founding and co-owning FunAir for six years and completing around 400 yacht installations, I eventually left to pursue new ventures, founding a new business in PVC repairs, since PVC materials and glues aren’t readily available and I had the knowledge. After doing that, the pandemic came in, which kind of slowed things down, so I kept my mind open to new ideas.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331617/image/large-f930be1b5618d2be81db551077fa7ac0.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331617">The idea for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7564" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AquaBanas (Company)">AquaBanas</a> came to me at 3 AM. After putting slides and other custom inflatables on about 400 yachts, I woke up and scribbled down notes on modular floating platforms for yachts. My thought was, why not standardise everything and make it modular so it could fit 95 percent of yachts? For the remaining five percent, I could customise the designs, which I have lots of experience with.The next morning, I explained the concept to my son, describing it as a floating platform with a table and tent. He said, ‘Like an Aquabana, dad?’ and that’s when the name clicked. I checked if the domain name was available (it was), and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7564" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AquaBanas (Company)">AquaBanas</a> was born!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331620/image/large-029767ef3df15360f5fb8865822d18e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331620">What has been your experience working in China?Before founding <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7564" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AquaBanas (Company)">AquaBanas</a>, I was already experienced in inflatables manufacturing, having grown my first manufacturing company in Orlando, which spanned 35,000 square feet and employed 75 people. When offshoring started to dominate, I considered Mexico but ultimately chose China, opening a factory in Qingdao and investing $1 million, matched by my Chinese partners.I lived in China for what turned into 16 years, despite not being able to read, write, or speak Chinese. It was an incredible experience that prepared me for where I am today. When I sold my shares of the Chinese factory, we employed 350 people and covered 160,000 square feet.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/336392/image/large-d9cbaead9c204ae9e4760793b034e370.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/336392">Today, my relationship with our factory owner, spanning over two decades, ensures that we have the absolute highest quality products that can be made from PVC materials. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7564" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AquaBanas (Company)">AquaBanas</a>’ China office is located in Qingdao, China, and the manufacturing is located in Southern China. It’s been a great experience. My design team in northern China and I have worked together for 15 years, while the team who handles our sourcing and quality control in the south have been with me for seven years.What qualities do you believe were key to your success?I’m also an absolute workaholic and very passionate about what I do. You can probably tell by now how passionate I am; I’ve been doing this for over 30 years, and you would think I’d be burned out or tired. But no, I’m not. When you hit a level of success, you start doing things because it’s fun, and that’s part of where I get my passion. I look at what our team has created and think, wow, we have all worked so hard to build an amazing global brand that is growing like crazy!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/336394/image/large-514d12538c5bac6da215b9a014494bb6.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/336394">I also built knowledge as I went. I learned as I went and lost tons of money learning from my mistakes over 30 years. We overbuild our products now to a degree not done in this industry due to the lessons learned over the years.More than anything, you have to have good ethics. The fact that I’ve put product on over 900 yachts since 2009 speaks for itself. If I were the kind of person who took advantage of clients, I wouldn’t have reached that number. It’s self-policing. If you just focus on revenue, you’ll hit a ceiling eventually.What’s next for AquaBanas?In this market, if you don’t innovate, you die. It’s not just about having something new; it’s about finding new ways to improve or reinvent what you already have. Right now, in our catalogue, the number of possible configurations is in the tens or even hundreds of thousands since everything fits together in just about any direction. And our catalogue just went from 158 to 200 pages. People are always looking for new toys. If all I did was focus on the yacht slide, I’d be out of business.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331618/image/large-96c201441642bec7bda1e8ec015648f6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331618">So, we’re going to keep innovating and diversifying. We have one major segment focused on superyachts and cruise ships. Another big part of our business is resorts. Lastly, we have special events, and we want to do more there.We recently partnered with the Red Bull Double or Nothing wakeboarding event in Lake Ivanhoe in downtown Orlando. We created floating platforms for the spectators. The event was incredible. Entrepreneur in Yachting: The mind behind AquaBanas

Emma Dailey interviews Mark Anastasia, the visionary behind AquaBanas and modern yacht slides, on his journey and success in luxury inflatables.

Francesca Webster sits down with father and son design duo Georges and Stefano Vafiadis to find out how the pair have created a beautiful design synergy and launched over 40 yachts in the process.&nbsp;While an increasing number of yacht design studios deal with uncertainty regarding leadership succession, the family behind <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/76" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Vafiadis (Company)">Studio Vafiadis</a> appears to have set itself up for a smooth transition.&nbsp;In the 12 years since joining his father’s design house, Stefano Vafiadis has evolved from designer to partner. He now leads the creative arm of the company while his father Georges manages the business and oversees the projects. Francesca recently sat down with the duo over video call, with them in their green and sunlit studio in the heart of Rome, Francesca from the banks of the grey and blustery IJ in Amsterdam. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/334982/image/large-9a918c3210381b01c5609b4ee4f7d413.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/334982"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/76" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Vafiadis (Company)">Studio Vafiadis</a> was founded in Rome in the 1980s where Georges had been working as a designer after his studies, first in National Monument Restoration for UNESCO and then at an industrial design firm that introduced him to yacht design. Launching his first yacht Gran Mudder&nbsp;in 1983, the success of the studio quickly took off, launching many large yachts through the 1980s.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/36750/image/large-72633b07831ae8833f8c016af424cebd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/36750">In 1994, the studio launched the 28.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> Opus I (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7825" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanis 28.6m (93'10&quot;)Baglietto S.p.A.1994">Oceanis</a>) in collaboration with the historic Italian shipyard, inaugurating a relationship which remains strong to this day. Over the decades, Georges and subsequently Stefano, have fostered long standing relationships with two key partners <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> being the first and the Greek builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/778" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts Ltd. (Company)">Golden Yachts</a> being the second.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/98410/image/large-a130e416a501b8642fa5dd218204f05c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/98410">The relationship with Paris Dragnis, owner and founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/778" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts Ltd. (Company)">Golden Yachts</a> is a deep one, with the studio having designed more than 15 yachts for him over the course of more than 30 years. Georges explains, “With Mr Dragis we share a cultural heritage which has helped foster a close bond over the years. “The first yacht I designed for him was the 42-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/311" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jaan42.0m (137'10&quot;)Intermarine S.p.A.1997">O’Pari</a> built at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/228" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Intermarine S.p.A. (Company)">Intermarine</a> in 1997, which was based on the design of one of my earlier yachts, the 38-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/567" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Indigo Star I38.0m (124'8&quot;)Siar & Moschini1995">Indigo Star</a>. Since then we have launched three subsequent yachts named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/311" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jaan42.0m (137'10&quot;)Intermarine S.p.A.1997">O’Pari</a>, the most recent being the 95-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/778" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts Ltd. (Company)">Golden Yachts</a>’ currently under construction; the 60-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts GY60-01202360.0m (196'10&quot;)Golden Yachts Ltd.2025">O’Madeleine</a> and another confidential project yet to be unveiled, the studio mentality of “our best yacht is always our next yacht”, is clearly something that Paris Dragnis also believes. Given the international acclaim awarded to the yard’s most recent launch, the 77.7-metre O’Rea, now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11076" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malia77.7m (254'11&quot;)Golden Yachts Ltd.2023">Malia</a>, it is no surprise that the collaboration between yard and studio has remained so strong over the years. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11076" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malia77.7m (254'11&quot;)Golden Yachts Ltd.2023">Malia</a> also marked a new era for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/778" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Golden Yachts Ltd. (Company)">Golden Yachts</a> fleet. Launched in 2023, she is the first of the fleet to feature a straight bow, offering her a contemporary profile that helps her stand out from her predecessors.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/297986/image/large-d9e0e546e4c5d78ec02335bd764e3054.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/297986"> <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/334985/image/large-7784dc2b9b6c1ba7f7c696d0c2a20dfa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/334985">For the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/76" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Vafiadis (Company)">Studio Vafiadis</a>, the opportunity to design something different allowed them to play with the volume and lines of the yacht, Stefano explains: “As John <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a> taught us, yacht design is all about balancing volumes. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11076" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malia77.7m (254'11&quot;)Golden Yachts Ltd.2023">Malia</a> offered us an opportunity to create a lot of volume in the hull, with her straight bow and wide beam, and this allowed us to create a sleek and sexy profile that creates a sporty aesthetic. While all of the yachts feature spacious beach clubs, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11076" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malia77.7m (254'11&quot;)Golden Yachts Ltd.2023">Malia</a> is a step above. She also features technological advancements on her predecessors with her enclosed anchoring, disappearing swim platform and hydraulic shell doors.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/334986/image/large-fd44cec649f53ee5dfce2206ecdad07d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/334986">Balancing timeless design with modern attributes sits at the heart of the studio’s mentality. Many of Georges’ early yachts remain contemporary even decades after their launch. When it comes to the stylistic thread that flows between their yachts, Stefano explains that there is no ‘copy and paste’ mentality; “We always begin with a blank sheet of paper, we like new challenges. In every stage we reflect on the experience that comes from my father and our designers, but we use that experience to start from scratch, and to inform our designs.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/189378/image/large-2fc774c2226c639d353750a5499144d8.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/189378">While upholding his father’s legacy, and collaborating as true partners remains a priority for Stefano, he has nonetheless made his own mark on the business in recent years. &nbsp;It was in fact Stefano that &nbsp;directed the studio’s more recent and increasingly successful partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a>, which was restarted in 2017 with the DOM Line. At the time the DOM series was created with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/863" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cerri & Associati (Company)">Cerri</a> shipyard, which was later absorbed into Baglietto in 2020, taking the DOM series with it, the first hull of which was the 37-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7953" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Run Away37.3m (122'5&quot;)Cerri Cantieri Navali (CCN)2021">Run Away</a> launched in 2021.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/189379/image/large-53fb0795846d013637eae57d082d442f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/189379"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7953" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Run Away37.3m (122'5&quot;)Cerri Cantieri Navali (CCN)2021">Run Away</a> was only the beginning of a fruitful series, and since launching the initial DOM line, 11 hulls have been sold. Today the team are working on a new series announced in the Spring of last year, the 35-metre DOM 115, the first hull of which has been sold and is already in-build. “The 35-metre is an interesting yacht, with a huge amount of volume for her size range and with a closer interaction between the interior and exterior spaces than any other yacht on the market,” explains Stefano. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/189399/image/large-8c6c5172356eb759230edf856ba941c4.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/189399">This interior-exterior interaction has become an increasing focus for yacht design over the last few years and Stefano believes that social media has played a major role in this development. “The demands of owners and the perspective of yachting has changed a lot since the advent of social media. In the past the attention was all about the yacht as an object to be admired and be looked at, today the focus is on the lifestyle that can be enjoyed onboard. For designers this has opened many doors and allows us to focus on the space as a living, breathing thing,” he comments.With this change, owners are more focused on silence than speed, and on efficiency and stabilisation, considerations that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/76" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Vafiadis (Company)">Studio Vafiadis</a> is working hard to bake into all of its projects. When it comes to their clients, much like the shipyards they collaborate with, Georges and Stefano are dedicated to fostering long term relationships and many of their clients have worked with them for decades. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/185111/image/large-96bfd3ddcee28b12c643c368543da19e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/185111">Georges explains, “Most of our owners are repeat clients, and even our new, younger clients are already discussing their next project. For us these relationships are extremely important and we work hard to keep the client happy. It is not our role to make decisions for them, we see ourselves as expert advisers who are there to answer their questions, ensure projects go smoothly, and ultimately to deliver the final product that they are looking for.”This client-first approach is also something that has helped to inform the legacy of the studio. Stefano’s gradual development within the team has allowed him to build his own personal relationships with those long standing clients. Stefano adds, “Our partnership is at the heart of the studio today, there is a continuous dialogue between us, and I believe it is a very beautiful and unusual collaboration.
