4myplanet has joined together with hundreds of other educational institutions, conservation organisations, and thousands of individuals in dozens of countries around the world in celebrating World Oceans Day, an opportunity to celebrate the oceans' wide array of wonders and resources, and consider ways that each of us can help with ocean conservation.
This year's theme, "Youth: the Next Wave for Change”, emphasises the important role that 'tweens and teens in particular can play, and are playing, in conserving our oceans.
Recent research has revealed that youth, especially those between the ages of 12 and 17, are especially important to ocean conservation. According to reports from The Ocean Project, youth not only have the highest level of concern about the problems facing the world's oceans, from oil spills and overfishing to climate change, but also are the most confident in their ability to make a difference, and increasingly looked to by the adults in their families for ways to be part of the solution by 'going green,' or perhaps more appropriately, 'going aquamarine!'
To commemorate this day, Alexia Barrier, the head of 4myplanet initiative, sailor and young role model, invites children to pay tribute to the World Ocean which links us all. Since this year it also partners with Princess Carina Organisation (headed by Princess Karina Bagration-Moukhransky, Phd) for socially responsible educational projects aiming to help young generation to turn good intentions into valuable results.
The children will get the unforgettable experience of a sailing trip along the Monaco coast on a superb 45 feet multihull, a scientific workshop and a photo session. The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco will open its doors to our young friends, invite them to join live communication with the scientific ship Tara (currently sailing in the Pacific). They will also visit the International Atomic
Energy Agency of Monaco to get acquainted with the scientists, working on ocean biodiversity projects. Each participant will receive a gift of an educational book, dedicated to marine biodiversity and environmental protection, a family admission to Oceanographic Museum of Monaco and a surprise from the project friends.
For this first educational action Alexia is sponsored by Soledad group , organiser of Loisirs d’Eau. Its founder, Didier Mareau, states:” I want this event to federate everyone, to give opportunity to participate personally in the protection of world oceans”.
The project is also supported by famous sportsmen as Jean-Michel Bayle, world champion of motocross, Pierre Frolla, free diving champion and many others.
World Oceans Day is held every June 8th, and is coordinated by The Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network .
