With yacht sales currently booming, owners may have a more difficult time finding the perfect vessel as they can’t really ‘shop around’ as much. Owners then may decide to undertake a new build project, but building the yacht of your dreams is not as simple as it sounds. A range of options and considerations are essential to bear in mind before embarking on this process. Here, SuperYacht Times discusses all things new build with Lennard Leeflang, industry veteran and Technical Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Y.CO (Company)">Y.CO</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217753/image/large-a94aa7571d7b17896b61a39eef990810.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217753">What is the most important thing owners should consider before embarking on the new build process?&nbsp;Before embarking on the new build process, it is important to establish not only what the client wants but why the client wants it. One of the ways we’ve been able to precisely do this is through our <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Y.CO (Company)">Y.CO</a> 100 questions. What we want to understand is what they are looking for, how they want to use their yacht and what they are trying to get out of it.&nbsp;Another important consideration is the project's timeline. Now, new build projects are taking longer than ever because of the general increased demand for yachts. Along with the thickening order books of shipyards, issues with supply chains have contributed to a delay, specifically as getting the right materials on time has become a major challenge. This is where having a knowledgeable team comes into play. Our vast experience enables us to anticipate and react to any problems that may arise. We are solutions-oriented and will provide the necessary information along with our recommendation in order to advise our clients to help them make the most informed decisions. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217755/image/large-bfc734613f1fb3a9d6c5060ed1b9d9f5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217755">What are the benefits of opting for a fully-custom new build over a semi-custom or production yacht?&nbsp;When deciding to build a fully-bespoke yacht, owners have the freedom to choose what they want in terms of design, aesthetics and functionality. This level of selectivity is usually not possible when clients are looking to purchase a pre-owned yacht. With new builds, clients have more flexibility to decide what they want within certain parameters. In essence, they have a carte blanche to do anything in terms of propulsion, new technology, design aspects and much more.When opting for a semi-custom or production yacht, there are several notable benefits, which go hand-in-hand with one another. Lead times are typically much shorter, as you are purchasing a pre-established platform, which also provides peace of mind because it has already been proven and optimised. This expedites the process and makes it easier because fewer decisions need to be made, most of which can be settled before the contract is even signed. To make the process even smoother, our in-house team consists of people with extensive on board experience, charter specialists, naval architects and marine engineers who can thoroughly review the general arrangement, always placing importance on flow, noise control, storage, operation procedure and compliance. They can identify flaws, improve comfort and accurately predict and therefore avoid any future restrictions or issues. Building a yacht should be enjoyable so we make it our priority to ensure that our clients are well-informed and as involved in the process as they want to be. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217751/image/large-3557e0783feba112d5dfa590447c15ba.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217751">One of the most salient topics in yachting right now is sustainability. As we expect technology to advance even further in the future, how can owners ensure that their new build project is future proofed?&nbsp;Incorporating sustainability into new builds can be challenging because of all of the environmental regulations that need to be taken into consideration. Thinking about how we can lessen the environmental impact of our projects is something we take very seriously. These initiatives, often undertaken by our clients, push us to look for the newest and most promising solutions. For example, we now see that hydrogen fuel cells are possible and are already being implemented on various ships. Though the infrastructure for hydrogen fuel cells isn’t quite up to where it needs to be in order to accommodate the yachting industry, clients are often curious about how they can include these technologies in their own projects. They're already talking about how they could change their current yachts 10 years from now to use the latest technology. They ask, “Can we change to hydrogen? Is that possible yet?” This intrinsic enthusiasm seen in clients is a positive indication of how the industry will continue to move forward in the future. We feel very fortunate to work with clients who are pushing the demand for these technologies and helping to make the yachting industry better and more sustainable. Because of our extensive team of in-house consultants and our passion for making yachting better, we are well-equipped to inform our clients about the latest solutions. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217756/image/large-cf8e490c917f32967ae8cfec7a5f2952.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217756">Yachts for charter and personal use often have different requirements. How are these needs reflected throughout the construction process?I think when a yacht is developed specifically for charter operation, it needs to tick certain boxes. Things like cabin spaces and facilities should be considered to make it a successful charter operation. Being on trend is often necessary as charter clients expect certain types of amenities such as extensive spas and beach clubs. Without these luxuries, the yacht loses some of its charter potential as those are amenities often considered to be standard. One of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Y.CO (Company)">Y.CO</a>’s greatest assets is how closely connected our full-service team is. We always work closely with our charter and yacht management departments to look at trends and benchmark them against other charter operations so we can future-proof the operation as much as possible should our client wish to charter in the future. However, we are also seeing that unique yachts that may not be your “traditional” charter yacht have also done well in the market, with clients looking for the “next best thing”. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217754/image/large-669b5f40bb1f84e5bb155a610448e83b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217754">How important is management of the build process to ensuring that the owner’s needs are met?&nbsp;Management is integral to a smooth and successful build process and beyond. The investment in a yacht build project is obviously quite significant and any investment of a significant volume requires proper management. What is especially important to consider is the operational side of the vessel: What are the maintenance costs? How much downtime will the yacht need for maintenance? What future regulations will need to be considered? What are the crew requirements? As a company with extensive experience managing a fleet of over 100 large yacht operations we understand the ins and outs of management. We think about everything, even the “boring” stuff that may emerge during the build process so that there are never any surprises for the client. This is also where knowing the clients’ wants and needs comes into play. Shipyards may recommend different equipment depending on the client’s intended use. Our close relationships with many shipyards means that we have a good understanding of each one’s strengths and weaknesses and can use this to anticipate and react to any issues that may emerge throughout the build process. Having an effective management team also ensures that the client’s agenda is always represented. Owners often change their minds about details and may want to modify aspects that haven’t been outlined in the initial contract, which is a very for every custom build and part of the process of building a yacht. A management team makes sure that these needs are always being met.

“It’s time to tear up the luxury rulebook and redefine the outdated yachting experience for a new generation that values Freedom over Things.” Charlie Birkett of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Y.CO (Company)">Y.CO</a>&nbsp;shares his thoughts on the future of the yachting industry.&nbsp;Over the past three decades that I’ve worked in yachting, I’ve seen how the industry’s trends have been revolutionised by the evolving priorities of owners and their charter guests. The world's wealthy are not only increasing in number, with the 2022 Wealth Report by Knight Frank recording a 9.3% increase in the number of Ultra-High Net Worth Individuals between 2020 and 2021 – but they’re getting younger too. By 2025, it’s estimated that 45% of the luxury market will be made up of millennials and generation Z. These clients are no longer interested in commissioning floating palaces and decking them out as symbols of wealth. Instead, they view their yachts as platforms for adventure, and are stocking them with everything from surfboards to submarines, helicopters to all-terrain vehicles, dive equipment and ROVs; and the list goes on. A new principled and adventure-hungry generation of yacht owners is coming, and they are turning their back on the traditional yachting experience and asking what else their superyachts can do for them. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/25474/image/large-ff945aeb4bcfae45c8c0d8da04e11a6d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/25474">As overused as the term is, “experience” is everything when it comes to modern luxury. From the live moments streamed on social media to the importance placed on travel, today’s generation of wealth values doing and sharing over buying and owning. And the luxury industry knows this. With automotive manufacturers curating exclusive drive experiences to the North Pole and fashion houses inviting clients to create custom, tailor-made goods in super-secret ateliers, brands are adapting, hoping to appeal to this new type of client that wants to enjoy their wealth, rather than just own it. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231075/image/large-ff295d6f7abe18bc4932ee033c6ed308.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231075">As an industry, we’re in a privileged position. Unlike other luxury goods, for which the concept of “experience” is little more than a marketing approach, a surface veneer applied across various touch points; a yacht by its very nature is a platform for adventure. While yachting has always been synonymous with luxury; right now, for the first time, our industry has a chance to shape the definition of it too. If we get it right, the popularity of yachting has the potential to explode among this next generation of clients. It’s time to tear up the rulebook and redefine the outdated yachting experience for this new generation that values Freedom over Things.As an industry, yachting can be particularly veiled. Used to the type of client who values privacy overall, and whose loyalty can be counted on, it operates in a unique universe that is seemingly only accessed through an individual broker, and where an unlimited menu of options is available only to those in the know. But for the new hyper-social generation, who are used to sharing every aspect of their lives online, &nbsp;and who expect to find information at the touch of a button, this approach can be alienating. Just like our clients, we need to become better at sharing. At sharing the amazing escapades we create for our clients, to inspire future charterers. At creating platforms where opinions can be exchanged between charter guests and owners. And finally, at sharing responsibility for the client itself, for the overall betterment of the client experience. Just as at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Y.CO (Company)">Y.CO</a>, where clients are serviced not by an individual broker, but by the entire team working together to elevate their experience; we need to be less afraid to build upon a wider network of specialists, from specialist crew to local expedition leaders, drawing all the niches together in order to create something amazing for our clients. We call this our community. A network of talents and relationships that interact to make experiences on the water the best they can be. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231074/image/large-e56e24d8fca402c933f0fb0d49924602.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231074"> For yachting to flourish, we need to evolve as service providers. It’s no longer enough to sell the yacht, arrange the logistics and send clients on their way. For many of our clients, for whom money and the ability to travel are infinite, a week or two cruising around the Caribbean no longer cuts it. They want to experience out-of-the-ordinary destinations in out-of-the-ordinary ways. That might mean a day spent kayaking with orca whales on the Antarctic peninsula or skiing virgin powder slopes in Greenland. It might mean a deep-sea submersible expedition in the Atlantic. Or it could be as simple as teaching their kids to swim in a deserted Croatian cove.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231076/image/large-653530c297a5c7dae0a9e49dd38f6596.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231076"> Whatever the destination, we always show clients what lies below the surface. Because the joy of the yachting experience isn’t just about the polished part; the amazing breakfasts, the Michelin-starred dinners. It’s about the two or three unforgettable moments – Gary and I like to call them escapades – that will stay etched in the client’s memory forever. It could be the thrill of their stargazing-obsessed son being shown to use a sexton by a crew member, or the characterful, colourful little Paella stop in the Balearics that nobody else knows about. Our job as experience-creators needs to go far beyond locating the yacht and suggesting the destination. It needs to surpass simply asking our clients what their favourite food is or what newspapers they read in the morning. It’s about getting to the heart of what a good experience looks like for them, then drawing on our community of talents and specialisms to create the kind of escapades that will remain in their memory for a lifetime.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231077/image/large-7d8cd2da4acd23b073c7ef041b0d3e7b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231077"> The emergence of this new generation that doesn’t value owning in the same way as it values doing, raises the question of who the future yacht owners are.
