Yacht crew cycling across Atlantic in aid of cancer awareness

Written by Charl van Rooy

The crew onboard the 55-metre Amels superyacht Gene Machine has set off today on a daunting trip that will see the 12 crew members attempt to ‘cycle’ across the Atlantic Ocean. The project’s objective is to raise funds and awareness for the Heart Research Institute and Ducks & Drakes Cancer Trust, following certain crew working onboard having had lost friends and family through both cancer and heart disease.

In a relay-style setup the crew will follow the virtual track that Gene Machine is making across the Atlantic and will have to average a speed of 21.5 kilometres per hour every day for the next 17 days to arrive in St. Maarten together with the vessel – a journey that covers 8,771 kilometres. Anyone can support the challenge by making a contribution to the cause here, or send a message of support on their dedicated Facebook page. A tracking service is installed onboard that will allow you to follow the crew’s progress.

Good luck guys!
