A fire broke out at Barcelona’s MB92 refit and repair shipyard this afternoon at approximately 14:30 according to local reports and eyewitness sightings. The fire has since been brought under control with no damage caused to any vessels or persons in the area.
The cause of the fire remains unknown and the shipyard confirmed that the fire started in a secondary installation dedicated to the maintenance and painting of materials. "A column of smoke was generated but the fire had a limited impact," commented MB92. As a precautionary measure, the port has been closed until further notice.
“MB92 wishes to thank the firefighters for their rapid response, enabling the fire to be brought under control and the smoke extinguished, as well as the efficient response of the company personnel who activated the safety and response protocols,” the shipyard added. "The company deeply regrets any inconvenience caused to maritime traffic and adjacent facilities, and will immediately start an investigation to clarify the cause of this incident."
