SuperYacht Times writer Andrea Pefianco sat down with Didier Novo of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8718" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="LXV (Company)">LXV Philippines</a> to explore the secluded islands, caves and crystalline lagoons that make the stunning archipelagic province of Palawan one of Asia’s premier luxury cruising destinations.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/387466/image/large-d386c595337c5e6c4f45ebb68b455295.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/387466">Out of more than 7,000 islands in the Philippines, the province of Palawan boasts over 1,700 islands and inlets, making it the perfect setting for the ultimate luxury island-hopping experience. Unlike well established cruising destinations, Palawan offers only a limited number of marinas, formal moorings and provisioning points, making logistics a challenge. Therefore, basic supplies including fresh food can sometimes be scarce and more expensive.Aeroplane access is available through the airports of Puerto Princess, Coron and El Nido. She boasts abundant inviting spaces perfect for family and friends to gather, including expansive outdoor decks and a Jacuzzi.While Palawan boasts countless breathtaking destinations, this six-day cruise focuses on a curated route from Busuanga southward to El Nido. The journey begins with a welcome stop at Apo Reef, technically outside Palawan’s boundaries, but a natural waypoint for vessels en route to the islands.&nbsp;As the largest contiguous coral reef system in the Philippines and second only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Apo Reef teems with marine life, hosting over 500 species of fish and 400 species of coral. Once a vessel of the Imperial Japanese Navy, now it serves as coral-draped monuments explored by divers of all levels. But not all beauty lies in depth. On the northern fringes of Caluit and Dimipac Islands, dugongs drift lazily through the seagrass shallows. To swim beside these elusive “sea cows” is an almost sacred initiation into Palawan’s beauty.A detour to Malajon Island, more widely known as Black Island, offers a striking change of scenery. Named for its dramatic black and grey limestone cliffs that rise sharply from the sea, the island is part of the ancestral domain of the Tagbanwa Tribe, one of Palawan’s indigenous groups. In this mystical corner, a massive cave that hides a crystal-clear natural pool, supplied by a gentle waterfall can be explored. As the day fades on Debotunay Island, there is a chance to gather barefoot by the bonfire, with the sea whispering back the memories of the day in every wave.The third day begins with a ten-minute hike from a nearby lagoon to the famed Kayangan Lake on Coron Island. Fed by saltwater and nestled among towering limestone cliffs, it is one of the “big three” natural wonders of the area, along with the Twin Lagoons and Barracuda Lake. Cruises are coordinated &nbsp;during the midday lull, when most groups retreat for lunch offer a quiet window where the crew lowers kayaks into the water, allowing guests to glide through the twin bodies of water separated by a narrow limestone wall.The first day concludes at Barracuda Lake, locally known as Luluyuan. Named after skeletal remains found in its depths, the lake’s real marvel lies beneath the surface. A rare thermocline, where layers of fresh and salt water meet, causes an unusual rise in temperature as divers descend. Whether you're a novice snorkeller or a seasoned diver, drifting past jagged limestone formations in this underworld feels like crossing into another dimension.&nbsp;Quieter shores are dedicated to day three. The cruise heads to a relaxed island-hopping adventure in Culion, far from the busier, commercial beaches. The morning begins at Malcapuya Island, where guests can enjoy an early swim and soak up the sun beneath swaying palms, on a long, powdery stretch of white sand.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/387476/image/large-95e1095caa99491740c09d4484446c05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/387476">Then, the voyage moves forward to Ditaytayan Sandbar, a shape-shifting natural wonder that transforms with the tide. At low tide, the sand unfurls even farther into the sea, creating a walking path across the shallows. For those seeking a more secluded escape, the final destination is the untouched island of Calumbagan. Though the waters en route may be slightly rougher, the reward is a pristine, crowd-free paradise.On day five, the focus shifts to pure exclusivity, as the voyage enters some of the private islands of Linapacan, accessible only through <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8718" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="LXV (Company)">LXV’s</a> tours. Stops include the pristine shores of Dimanglet and Lacalaca Islands, along with a visit to a protected turtle sanctuary on Ariara Island. With a bit of luck, guests might witness baby turtles hatching and making their first journey into the sea. After a day of exploration and wonder, the group gathers for a supper inspired by local flavors, with freshly caught seafood as the evening’s highlight.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/387475/image/large-edc1f3ad8bbb67bf9ca959f358ef9090.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/387475">Though the cruises are unmistakably luxurious, Didier insists on staying grounded in the local culture. “I’m still selling the tradition, the people. I want to take guests to the fishermen – I want them to see the fishermen, to watch them negotiate,” he said. The crew already knows to veer off course at the wave of a fisherman’s hand, an invitation to come closer and see what’s been pulled from the sea that morning.In some instances, the tour includes a visit to a nearby fishing village of Calibang Island, where guests can catch a glimpse of everyday life and even visit the local school to interact with the children. They may find themselves in the midst of an unscripted, authentic moment: ten dogs rushing to the shore, a fishing family waving them in with warm curiosity, fresh catch in hand. Guests often buy fish directly from the family, and as Didier described, “They want this simple [experience], they’ll buy the barracuda and ten minutes later, it’s on the grill.” Meal is served on board, fresh from the fire, the salt still clinging to the skin of the fish.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/387468/image/large-5e9f834100bbcc606efc0f5cdc68b510.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/387468">As the journey comes to a close, a final detour leads through the quiet beauty of the Bacuit Archipelago in El Nido. At low tide, Snake Island reveals its signature S-shaped sandbar, which is ideal for a peaceful morning walk that feels like a stroll across the sea. A short hike to the hilltop offers a clear view of the winding shoreline below.On Pinagbuyutan Island, guests can take a break under the coconut trees, relax in a hammock or enjoy the view of the island’s striking towering limestone cliffs. Next month, the first edition of SuperYacht Times’ <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/213" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit">Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit</a> takes place in Hong Kong. Owners keen to go even more niche could opt for a trimaran boat, of which there are a total of six boats in operation in the entire global fleet of 6,676 yachts over 24 metres.&nbsp;That said, for such a small player where the numbers are concerned, multihulls have certainly garnered their fair share of media attention over the years. The <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/echo-yachts-84m-superyacht-white-rabbit-launched" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">launch</a> of the 84-metre trimaran <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5636" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="White Rabbit84.04m (275'9&quot;)Echo Yachts2018">White Rabbit</a> last September - as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4342" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Echo Yachts (Company)">Echo Yachts’</a> biggest motor yacht to date, the largest private trimaran superyacht in the world and the largest motor yacht to have ever been built in Australia - was the most recent noteworthy example of a multihull vessel which hit the headlines in 2018. The interest in these particular boats is not just limited to these record-breaking vessels, however. Their advantages, such as improved performance, increased stability, greater space and a shallow draft can be found in sailing and motor multihulls of all shapes and sizes and are enjoyed by a small and fiercely loyal contingent of owners.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/7518/image/large-ee73cadec63fc6f585f693d218867e70.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7518">To find out what it is that makes multihull owners tick and why they’ve gone for this somewhat unusual approach to superyacht ownership, we caught up with the second owner of the 34.72-metre 2010 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> catamaran <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a> and the British shipping magnate Anto Marden, who commissioned the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shuttleworth Design (Company)">John Shuttleworth</a>-designed 42.5-metre power trimaran <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2714" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adastra42.5m (139'5&quot;)McConaghy Boats2012">Adastra</a> to be built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/276" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="McConaghy Boats (Company)">McConaghy Boats</a> in Hong Kong back in 2012.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/7470/image/large-13aaf0f782b3987b51f9d5db1254b2b0.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7470">When and why did you buy your multihull boat?&nbsp;Owner of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a>:&nbsp;I was sailing last May and my captain pointed out that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a> was for sale at a good price, so I got in contact with the broker. When I got back from my summer holiday I did a sea trial in Cannes and she sailed really well. I loved the boat but I wasn’t sure because it was a lot of money. The next morning I was up early at 6am and I went for a swim in the bay of Cannes. The sun came up and at that moment I thought, I’m going to buy <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a>.I negotiated with the broker, Charles Ehrardt from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>, but he suggested that I speak to the owner directly. So we set up an appointment with the last owner in his office in Antwerp, we had a really nice talk about sailing and life in general. I liked him so we managed to put the deal there at a good price which we were both happy with. He was looking for someone with the same passion to take care of the boat as it really was his baby!<img src="/uploads/store/photo/74099/image/large-c2b44b7f7ee8342f09c2f728c47e0091.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/74099">Anto:Mazinga, my first major yacht was designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shuttleworth Design (Company)">John Shuttleworth</a> back in the early 80s. She was a 45-foot trimaran cruiser-racer and she was built out of wood/epoxy in the Philippines by a couple of itinerant boat builders. Since then, I’ve stayed friendly with John and we’ve enjoyed going sailing together. After the shipping market went up all of a sudden, I had money which I could spend wisely and so I cooked up <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2714" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adastra42.5m (139'5&quot;)McConaghy Boats2012">Adastra</a> with John: she took three or four years to build, which cost far more than I thought it would. I really like the trimaran format because it looks good, it’s seaworthy, the shallow draft is easy to push, and I was used to multihulls from an early age anyway. I used to sail the Spronk catamarans from St Maarten to St Barts in 1975 as a kid - I was a sailor boy.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/7488/image/large-a1cb5ea5816170ac0ec0e15f47695bfd.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7488">Owner of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a>:For many years I didn’t do a lot of yachting, but one summer I got bold and rented a catamaran in the BVI and drove it myself, which went well. In the BVI I saw all these beautiful sailing catamarans and thought, this is nice! My first boat was called Split Second because I was getting back from the BVI, did a sea trial, went to the Cannes Boat Show and bought a Lagoon 620 as a sort of split-second decision. I liked that boat, but it was a series boat so you can’t have it built as you want, and the build-quality was only medium.Finally, what do you see as the main advantages of owning a multihull boat?&nbsp;Owner of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a>:For me, it was about the <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/yacht-stability-guide-from-diana-yacht-design" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">stability</a> you get from a catamaran of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a>’s size. When we’d go out sailing with my previous boat, my wife would always get seasick, so I thought, ‘I can’t continue this! I need another boat.’ I briefly considered motor yachts but they didn’t do it for me, and I looked at monohulls which are stable when you sail but not at anchor, so <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a> was the ideal solution.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/74118/image/large-d203f5939f9b6147925d5d4a451d00a0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/74118"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/74342/image/large-e6d956286aad2988d6bf005cbec8a4c4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/74342">Secondly, it was also about space. I also looked into big <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perinis</a> as you get a lot of space on them but they don’t sail as well. I had studied <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a> beforehand carefully, the interiors and everything, and I remember stepping on board for the first time at Cannes and realising that she is much bigger and has a lot more space than you see in photographs thanks to her design.Anto:&nbsp;First off, there’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2714" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adastra42.5m (139'5&quot;)McConaghy Boats2012">Adastra’</a>s seaworthiness: we can go to sea in almost any condition. We’ve left marinas in the middle of the night into a howling gale and people are aghast! The big white yacht people would never dream of going out in these conditions, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2714" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adastra42.5m (139'5&quot;)McConaghy Boats2012">Adastra</a> is pretty bloody good. She can muscle her way through pretty much anything.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/7508/image/large-708afc3838ab33552bf4b98bc7671804.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7508">The next thing is fuel economy: we can go across the Atlantic twice without refuelling, which is always good. You go into the Med, you fill up with 30,000 litres of diesel in Gibraltar, and that’s you pretty much done for the season. Finally, because of her design, she is also a super-head-turner. Everybody, literally everybody takes a photograph. Quite honestly the Greek Islands offer really, really good cruising because they’re close together. The weather isn’t too rough and each island is a lovely destination. You can always go to the taverna and there’s something happening there, it’s very pleasant actually. You go into the Mediterranean, you fill up with 30,000 litres of diesel in Gibraltar, and that’s pretty much done for the season. Naturally, she is also a super-head-turner. Everybody, literally everybody takes a photograph. It’s like living in a fishbowl. In Italy, they’re a bit insistent, but you can always disappear down below.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/7493/image/large-a9752328e49afce29a3163cc0164b577.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7493">Why have you decided to put her up for sale?Quite honestly, I’ve finished with world cruising and haven’t totally retired yet, so I’ve not been able to spend as much time as I’d like to on board. It’s a bit of a waste to have her sitting there not doing anything just waiting for me to turn up, so I’m pulling my horns in.I’ve got another yacht called the Hung&nbsp;Twa which is also 120 foot, she’s steel patrol type boat made in China designed by Nigel Irens, another famous multihull yacht designer. I’m not sure there are too many people like me who want to sail around and explore different parts of the world. Like a retired hedgefund guy from America who has always been a sailor and wants to go world cruising, that would be one, but I think it’s much more likely that it’ll be the boy racer type, one of the oligarchs, 40 years old who wants to park her in Formentera and impress the babes.&nbsp;Because she’s actually quite small, there are only three cabins so she is very different from a superyacht: it’s more like a family sailboat operation. It’ll probably be quite a long campaign. I wouldn’t expect her to be sold quickly, because there are only a certain number of people who want to buy, out of that number, half of them aren’t ready and half of them don’t have the money: there are too many variables to expect her to be sold quickly.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/7470/image/large-13aaf0f782b3987b51f9d5db1254b2b0.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7470">Are you looking to expand your fleet going forward?I’ve got my islands in Indonesia, including Pangkil and Pulau Joyo. Antony Marden, the owner of the unique 43m trimaran yacht Adastra, shares his inspiration for the vessel and his reasons for putting her for sale.

To celebrate Chinese New Year, we take a look at some of the coolest Chinese-built superyachts on the water today: Gong Xi Fa Cai! &nbsp;(Happy New Year!) Nero&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/5649/image/large-1630a1b7f3ed16aa9ce1385232eb66c1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/5649"> No list of awesome Chinese-built superyachts would be complete without mentioning the 90.1-metre modern replica superyacht, Nero&nbsp;built by Corsair Yachts and delivered in 2007.&nbsp;Nero’s timeless lines were inspired by the 1890s superyacht&nbsp;Corsair,&nbsp;which was&nbsp;commissioned by the American financier, banker and art collector, JP Morgan. Nero&nbsp;features classic interiors from Neil Taylor designs which hark back to her 1800s heritage. That said, Nero also boasts modern features, including a swimming pool, two VIP cabins with saloons, two custom tenders and a 5.5-metre side boarding platform ideal for diving, swimming and boarding the yacht. Qing&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/16075/image/large-cd2d98f0d447168300c96c2276c3cda2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/16075">Next up, it's Qing.&nbsp;Previously called Mazu,&nbsp;the 46-metre superyachtQing&nbsp;was built by the Chinese shipyard Cheoy Lee and launched in 2010. Sporting a distinctive red hull, Qing&nbsp;was the second of MCC's Marco Polo Transocean Explorer series and underwent an extensive refit in Brisbane last year at Rivergate Marina and Shipyard. Her exterior design is from Ron Holland, and her interiors are by KCA International.&nbsp; King Baby&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/25831/image/large-28701c54c73f0e767e30f73485c067fc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/25831">Recently spotted in St Lucia by the SuperYacht Times team, King Baby&nbsp;is a 41-metre superyacht built by IAG Yachts and delivered in 2015. This GRP superyacht was built for an American family and has a generous 497 GT internal volume in order to accommodate the whole family, making her the largest composite motor yacht delivered in China to date. Inside, King Baby&nbsp;features a rock and roll inspired interior by Evan K. Marshall, including an authentic Fender Stratocaster guitar gipped in chrome.&nbsp; Serenity&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/21883/image/large-b15dd634d3f37254b40dc9963839b957.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/21883"> Serenity&nbsp;is a 40.4-metre superyacht which was launched by the yard IAG Yachts&nbsp;in April 2016. Sporting exterior and interior design again from Evan K. Marshall, Serenity&nbsp;can reach a respectable top speed of 18 knots and has a cruising speed of 15 knots. With a gross tonnage of 363, Serenity&nbsp;boasts an enormous interior volume, bringing with it a great deal of versatility for her owner's use.&nbsp; Adastra&nbsp;&nbsp; <img src="/uploads/store/photo/7519/image/large-3f2d2dd49c0ec9ae63788d2615b15dce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7519"> Last, but certainly not least, is the eye-catching and futuristic multihull superyacht Adastra. Built in 2012 by McConaghy Boats, Shuttleworth Design in England is the team responsible for her space-like exterior, who designed the custom yacht to be built with a carbon fibre and Nomex honeycomb cockpit with a glass/Kevlar hull. Adastra has a cruising speed of 17 knots and can reach 22.5 knots as her top speed.

In a fleet of over 5,000 superyachts, the numbers of yachts that are instantly recognisable are small. Traditional and practical designs reign supreme, but occasionally a yacht will come along that breaks all the boundaries. Take the Maltese Falcon, Yas, S/Y A, M/Y&nbsp;A, Ocean Pearl, Black Pearl, Venus, Nero and Adastra&nbsp;- to name but a few. Love them or hate them, there is no doubt that they play an important role in demonstrating the capabilities of design innovation and, in their own way, have an effect on the overall evolution of superyacht design processes. Whether by directly influencing other designs, pushing design constraints to their limits and forcing innovation or simply sparking the imagination, these designs should be celebrated.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20967/image/large-71a5389ec3045bfc8b37b4bdb0b22507.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20967"> But how possible is it for innovation in superyacht designs to take place? Superyacht design is constantly evolving; with imagination and a willing owner, almost anything is possible within operational and safety constraints. That said, the creation of an innovative build will almost always come down to the owner, how much freedom they give the designer, and their willingness to do things differently. “Good projects come from good and demanding clients, and in the case of ECO, [her owner] Emilio Azcárraga was both,” says designer Martin Francis. With many owners aware that to build something ‘out there’ is a risky process, often impacting resale potential and inviting perhaps controversial opinions, playing it safe is often the more appealing route. “Very few owners are looking for innovation, I assume because of the risks that are inevitably involved,” says Francis.&nbsp;While building an iconic yacht is not for everyone, these yachts undoubtedly have had an important influence on superyacht design as a whole, with many people growing to love yachts they might initially have considered controversial. “This has been the case with Skat… People who didn’t like her at the time like her today, over time they’ve grown more comfortable with the design and they now like it,” says Espen Oeino. “What was initially considered an ugly duckling yacht has now become iconic, so perhaps iconic yachts do inspire others.”We take a look some of the most iconic and controversial superyacht designs and some of the thought processes behind their design.&nbsp;M/Y A and S/Y ADesigned by Philippe Starck, M/Y A and S/Y A turn heads wherever they go and divide opinions with their distinctive looks and futuristic designs. Both very different, albeit cut from the same cloth, M/Y A&nbsp;and S/Y A are bold statement yachts born from their owner’s desire to push the boundary of yacht design and create something unique.&nbsp;Starck was given total creative free rein when designing M/Y A after owner Andrey Melnichenko changed his mind on a commission from another designer. When Starck presented his designs, Melnichenko quickly agreed to them and the rest is history.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20965/image/large-04c2df1c2c4c341f4231315fd2f8feb5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20965"> M/Y A&nbsp;features submarine-inspired styling and a smooth upside down hull form that leaves almost no wake even when powering at 25 knots. A favourite feature of Starck’s on board M/Y A is the cavern-like tender garage, that feels akin to a ballroom when you step into its huge spaces. With openings on three sides, this space ensures true on water living.&nbsp;On her launch, S/Y A demonstrated similar creative styling to her motor yacht sister. This radical yacht is the biggest sail-assisted motor yacht in the world and her sheer scale is colossal with masts towering over 100 metres high. A shard like sloping design, all exterior surfaces are completely flush. Seen under sail for the first time in 2017 she is a yacht like no other and has no less than eight decks!Ocean PearlDesigned by Lord Norman Foster and the team at Foster + Partners, Ocean Pearl’s design features an arched superstructure that creates a look that is a departure from traditional design. “For its unique appearance, we drew inspiration from many sources, including nature and the sleek movement of sharks and dolphins through the water – the superstructure is brought forward and the prow of the yacht is raised to evoke a similar effect,” says Angus Campbell, Senior Partner at Foster + Partners. “This is complemented by a smooth shape, which wraps the accommodation under a single skin.”&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/7545/image/large-8d770f82b495319c3871bc9a01bee6f7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7545"> The team took the concept of a traditional yacht layout and reinvented it, placing the owner's’ cabin at the bow of the boat, under the captain’s cabin with a ‘his and hers’ balcony on either side, which allowed the owners to have an unprecedented forward view from within their cabin. “We wanted to create a yacht on which 12 people can comfortably spend 10 days together at sea and Ocean Pearl has seven different external decks in a variety of scales, spaces where all guests can congregate, as well as more intimate, personal terraces,” says Campbell. “These are vital differences, so it is perhaps natural that this boat will also look strikingly different. Ironically, given she was designed to be different, Ocean Pearl is one of two identical sister ships.ECO&nbsp;On her launch, ECO (now named Zeus) represented a leap in superyacht design innovation with her striking aggressive lines, powerful performance and radically curved windows. Long, sleek and incredibly fast, she is widely hailed as a masterpiece of design. Despite this, “ECO was not recognised as ‘iconic’ for at least 15 years,” says her naval architect and designer, Martin Francis. The development of ECO’s design was a long process, and she almost wasn’t built with her owner nearly buying a secondhand build instead. “He [the owner] had faith in me as a designer but it took two and a half years before we came up with the final solution… there was no magic, just hard work.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20969/image/large-f051682a6cccded7d1824493db379c09.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20969"> Eco’s huge curved windows, reminiscent of French buses, were a true style statement, and help give the yacht her distinctive look, with Francis describing their development process as “a work of art.” Other controversies around her design include the positioning of the bridge on the main deck, with the owner wanting the views from the space typically occupied by the bridge for himself. Today ECO&nbsp;is as iconic as when she was launched with her speed credentials still as impressive as they were a quarter of a century ago.&nbsp;Skat15 years ago when&nbsp;Skat launched, she intentionally broke away from the norm. “I had a very specific brief from the owner, who couldn’t relate to traditional yachts, who was looking for an honest design that respected the materials it used,” says Espen Oeino, her designer. &nbsp;“The challenge the owner gave me was to use the building materials in their existing format and I remember walking away from that first meeting and thinking ‘this is going to be difficult.’” As it turned out, the owner instantly liked Oeino’s first concepts and the yacht we see today is almost identical to those first sketches.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20966/image/large-f2bf74a7cb6ed0dc51797fb90ad46846.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20966"> With her flat plates and profiles, grey colouring and slightly menacing appearance, “when Skat first launched there were a lot of people who were uncomfortable with the way she looked, they were generally never indifferent,” says Oeino. “People either loved or hated her and that’s fine. As a designer that is preferable to indifference!”Skat has undoubtedly had an impact on superyacht design as a whole, with her influences seen on many designs since her launch. “She was one of the very first superyachts to embrace stealth-style design and a linear design language, but today that style of the yacht is quite commonplace, so yes, perhaps she has been an inspiration to others,” says Oeino. <a href="http://www.superyachtcompany.com/newspaper/the-superyacht-times-subscription" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title=""> </a>This article was featured in the latest edition of the SuperYacht Times newspaper. The futuristic multihull superyacht Adastra has arrived in the Mediterranean this summer season after a period spent in the Pacific and the Caribbean last year. The yacht was built in 2012 by McConaghy Boats in China. Shuttleworth Design in England is the team behind her space-like exterior and designed the yacht to be built with a carbon fibre and Nomex honeycomb cockpit with a glass/Kevlar hull. The custom built Adastra travels at a speed of 17 knots and is capable of reaching 22.5 knots as her top speed.

The 42.5m trimaran superyacht Adastra in Naples

The British multihull specialists, Shuttleworth Design, has launched project MARS (Mayflower Autonomous Research Ship), whereby the company is attempting to create a fully autonomous unmanned vessel to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The event date has been set for the year 2020, marking the 400th anniversary of the original crossing of the Mayflower from Plymouth, England, to Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts in USA.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155771/image/large-9fa57002f6a9836c2ddddffbad631a70.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155771">Being developed in association with Plymouth University, MARS will be a state-of-the-art vessel over 100ft in length, able to sail unmanned with an unlimited range by relying on solar technology to power its propulsion system. She will be fitted with a two-masted soft sail rig enabling MARS to reach a top speed of 20 knots, and capable of sailing with one or both sails hoisted. Shuttleworth Design is known for having designed the superyacht Adastra project.John and Orion Shuttleworth comments, "A trimaran was chosen because it provides the most efficient hull form for low speed motoring. The hull configuration developed from a requirement to reduce windage, while keeping the solar array sufficiently high above the water to reduce wave impact. Without the need for accommodation, the centre hull has been kept low to the water and the wings and deck are separated and raised above on struts. Unmanned vessel designed to undertake historic Atlantic crossing

The company states that all of their latest trimaran designs are heavily based upon that of the 42.5 metre superyacht Adastra which was launched in China in 2012 and has gone on to be the recipient of a multitude of awards in the industry.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152587/image/large-84ec7da6ca2dd6a08b02621ead852bf4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152587">The latest 32 metre concept has been designed with long distance voyages in mind, boasting a range of over 6,000 nm at a speed of 12 knots and a top speed of 23 knots. She has been noted for her particularly impressive fuel efficiency. In addition, her interior spaces have been maximised to provide both spacious and comfortable accommodation located on the lower deck for up to four guests and a two crew whilst offering excellent seakeeping, stability and efficiency. Her interior spaces have been conceived as open plan, but can also be compartmentalised when required.In regards to her outside spaces, she provides plenty of space and amenities for guests to fully enjoy the superyacht experience. Her flybridge presents a large shaded seating area surrounded by low coamings that ensure exceptional views when on board. In addition, a BBQ and the helm station are found in this area. Elsewhere, the aft deck also features a BBQ area, as well as a lazarette and storage space for various water toys. Though the 4.9 metre and 3.1 metres tenders are also stored on the aft deck, once launched this area further opens up to provide an ideal space for sunbathing and relaxing.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152588/image/large-1befcbbec64be07d062d11144d37fb25.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152588">The 70 metre trimaran design further accentuates the company’s dedication to fuel efficiency as well as a real ocean going yacht, with a range of 7,000 nm at a speed of 14 knots. She boasts a top speed of 25 knots that can be increased to 30 knots with alternative engine options.She accommodates up to 12 guests on board as well as 14 crew, including a luxurious dedicated owner’s deck containing an office lounge and opulent suite, as well as a foredeck sunbed and lounging area. On the main deck four guest cabins are found, as well as a VIP cabin located in the bow. Further guest accommodation is based in the wings of the vessel, allowing for expansive living areas on the main deck. In order to maximise guest privacy, a central column houses separate guest and crew staircases, a lift and technical area.Outside, an external walkway around the bridge deck gives the crew clear visibility for docking and maneuvering. A forward facing sofa behind the helm station provides a relaxing space for guests to observe operation of the vessel, and the aft deck has a large sun pad with optional spa pool, an ample seating area and a bar. The aft garage houses a demountable 16ft Hobie cat, a 7.5 metre tender and a dive store with a fold beach and dive platform. Other tenders and water toys include a 4.9 metres (SOLAS) RIBS and two Yamaha jet skis.

Radical trimaran superyacht Adastra launched

Palladium Technologies, Inc. has been awarded contracts for the new 42 metre Trimaran M/Y Adastra. This unique project was designed by John Shuttleworth Yacht Design, Ltd. and is being built by McConaghy Boats in Zhu Hai, China. Plans are to launch M/Y Adastra in early 2011 with her cruising grounds expected to be in the beautiful waters of Indonesia. “As a testament to our commitment to being a ‘Total Solutions’ technology company, Palladium has been awarded many extensive projects, especially overseas,” said Mike Blake, president, Palladium Technologies. Palladium’s continued expansion into the electrical arena means they will be providing the electrical designs for such items as: AC/DC load analysis, AC/DC power distribution, motor control circuits, and emergency and yacht lighting circuits. The electrical systems will be comprised of Titan switchboards, Titan AC/DC distribution panels, shorepower conversion, lighting systems, A/V entertainment, bridge electronics and a navigation light control panel. All the aforementioned items interface to the SiMON monitoring, alarm and control system. SiMON will also be monitoring 269 points with two main monitoring and alarm stations. One is located at the bridge and crew area along with a secondary alarm notification in the engine room. A Consilium fire detection system will be designed to notify the crew and guests of a potential fire. SiMON-C, Palladium’s camera security system, will contain a DVR server located on the bridge supporting up to eight cameras.
