Built by the British shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Philip & Sons (Company)">Philip &amp; Sons</a> in 1930, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/260" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atlantide37.28m (122'4&quot;)Philip & Sons1930">Atlantide</a> is a 37.28-metre motor yacht with a rich history and was <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/58546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Historic 1930s motor yacht Atlantide completes rebuild at Huisfit (2023-09-08 13:45:00 +0200)">recently rebuilt in 2023 at Huisfit</a>, in the Netherlands. Originally designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/239" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A. Mylne & Co (Company)">A. Mylne &amp; Co</a>, the 137 GT yacht underwent a refit by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ken Freivokh Design (Company)">Ken Freivokh Design</a>, updating her interior and exterior, while respecting the yacht's classic pedigree. Constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/260" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atlantide37.28m (122'4&quot;)Philip & Sons1930">Atlantide</a> is equipped with twin diesel <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1451" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gardner (Company)">Gardner</a> engines and boasts a 3,685 nautical miles range thanks to her 28,000-litre fuel capacity, perfect for long trips.&nbsp;Adjacent to her is the 55.44-metre sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2075" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adela55.44m (181'11&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1995">Adela</a>. Built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a> in 1995, she showcases a blend of classic elegance and modern features, with both exterior and interior design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects</a>. Since her initial restoration, she has undergone multiple refits at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis Shipyard</a>, including a five metre hull extension in 2000. She has won several prestigious sailing competitions, including the Pendennis Cup and the St Barths Bucket. Last refitted in 2015, she can comfortably accommodate up to eight guests in four staterooms and is powered by a single <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1408" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caterpillar Inc (Company)">Caterpillar</a> engine, achieving a top speed of 12 knots.&nbsp;

The final day of racing for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/219" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Challenge Antigua - 2024">Superyacht Challenge Antigua 2024 (SYCA)</a> came to a close on Sunday 17 March, where the class winners were announced and the highly prized Gosnell Trophy was presented to Adela which competed in the Spirit of the Regatta.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/305430/image/large-903e27ca35a87f858ab23e8765ae41ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/305430">The class winners of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/219" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Challenge Antigua - 2024">Superyacht Challenge Antigua</a> were congratulated at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/219" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Challenge Antigua - 2024">Superyacht Challenge Antigua</a> prize giving ceremony on Sunday, held at The Admirals Inn. Although there is no overall winner, the highly prized Gosnell Trophy is awarded to the yacht which competed in the Spirit of the Regatta.&nbsp;Racers were off to a great start on the final day, with sunshine and about 15 knots of superb tradewinds just south of east. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/219" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Challenge Antigua - 2024">SYCA</a> Race Committee, led by PRO Hank Stuart, set two courses for the three classes, which later had to deal with south veering winds, and 18 knot gusts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/305428/image/large-5656a134cb4dbd349c5fb9a56e3764ea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/305428">A 17.5 nautical mile triangular course was set for the Buccaneer class, which included three long downwind, reaching and upwind legs, while the Corsair and Privateer classes were set a special course 21.3 nautical miles, which included two long reaching legs and a deep water beat.The Privateer class saw the 66.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/592" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hetairos66.7m (218'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2011">Hetairos</a>, skippered by Graham Newton, make the best in class start. Presented by Toby Allies &amp; Mike Carr from Pendennis Shipyard, the sprinkling of Irish sailors onboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4858" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Namuun32.89m (107'11&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2012">Namuun</a> were particularly pleased to be honoured on St Patrick's Day.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/219" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Challenge Antigua - 2024">Superyacht Challenge Antigua</a> co-founder Stan Pearson was present in spirit throughout the regatta. Stan sadly passed away just a few weeks before the start. After his burial at sea flanked by superyachts, a memorial was held in Nelson’s Dockyard with hundreds of the sailing community in attendance. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/305438/image/large-d84e894f9b33c1e527b660c53d839763.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/305438">“Stan will always be remembered for his tremendous work, love and enthusiasm for sailing,” commented organisers of the regatta. “A deep water mark ‘Stan’ has been named in his memory and three cheers were given Stan at the prizegiving, which the whole of Nelson’s Dockyard heard.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/219" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Challenge Antigua - 2024">Superyacht Challenge</a> Antigua co-founder Paul Deeth has confirmed the dates for the 14th edition of the Superyacht Challenge Antigua, which will be held between the 4-11 March, 2025.

Based on one of the most southernmost tips of Britain, nestled away in the beautifully sleepy and surprisingly beautiful town of Falmouth, is Pendennis. A shipyard that has been in the game for over three decades, their portfolio consists of some of the most technically challenging yet rewarding transformation projects, impressive refit projects, and an array of new build superyachts - both motor and sail - that are destined to be sailing the Seven Seas for years to come. With a substantial investment in facilities over the past few years, the sheds at Pendennis are full to capacity with no quiet period looming on the horizon. So, we asked joint Managing Director, Henk Wiekens - what’s the secret to success?

Born in Holland, Wiekens journey to Pendennis started in the late 60s, just north of Amsterdam. Working for a small local shipyard, he learned his boat building skills at a relatively early age and by 1978, at the tender age of 25, he made the leap to building his own boats with a friend. Working with a similarly aged client, together his partner and himself built a small ketch from scratch - a ketch that went on to sail the world - and he was hooked. Moving to New Zealand together with their families in the early 80s, Wiekens continued to build boats - successfully.

So successfully in fact that what would become the Pendennis yard we know today invited Wiekens over to Falmouth to contribute to a small project. Accepting the invite from Peter de Savary - owner at the time - the initial invitation soon developed into a little more than originally anticipated: “Pendennis were building a couple of 12-metres for the Blue Arrow campaign in the summer of ‘88. During that time it became clear that the 12-metre market was gone for the America’s Cup. They then wanted to go into the superyacht business, so I was invited to set up the yard here and to take care of the construction of the first yacht, the 37-metre Taramber (now La Cattiva)... It was supposed to be a period of 18 months but, as you can see, I’m still here!”

One of the contributing factors to the permanent extension of Wiekens stay in Falmouth was the introduction to Mike Carr, six months after landing in the UK. Carr, who had worked with Vosper Thornycroft for a number of years, came from a more formally trained background in naval architecture and with an entirely different approach to business. It was in 1993 when Wiekens and Carr decided to take the leap with a management buyout, helped by De Savary. Now, they are - perhaps rather unusually - joint Managing Directors, an arrangement that continues to work to this day.

One of the principle elements of future proofing in recent years is most definitely the significant investment in the development of the yard’s facilities. Coming in at an eye-watering £24,000,000 and taking a number of years, Pendennis increased their capacity with three new sheds for new build and refit projects from 30 to 100 metres, as well as an enclosed yacht basin. The tangible benefits of such was immediately tasted at the yard, when the largest project ever to come to Pendennis, Aquila, in the summer of 2015, was apparently eager to be the first to experience the new and improved Pendennis shipyard. “After we increased our facilities we were taken to the test quite quickly,” Wiekens reminisces, “basically the concrete of the new facilities was still curing when she came in!”

Though Aquila is one of the most important projects undertaken at Pendennis in recent years, Wiekens warmly remembers an altogether different project some 20 years previous, a project in which he attributes to the possibility of essential growth and development at the company. It was 1995 when the 1903 schooner Adela was first welcomed into the Pendennis family. “Adela has fantastic owners and for me personally Adela will always have a big soft spot because she made so many things possible,” he says. “That’s the same with Rebecca and Adix as well. It was fantastic to have the opportunity to be so heavily involved from the word go, and working with the owners on that. These boats are landmarks.”

The design challenge presented by Adela was to incorporate every conceivable modern yacht system and convenience into the interior without losing the je ne sais quoi of the original W.C. Storey design. Today, Adela cuts a classic profile blending traditional fittings with modern technology within her sumptuous interior as well as on deck. Since her initial restoration Adela has returned to the yard for remodelling work in 2000, during which she had a 5-metre mid-ship's hull extension, and for routine maintenance refits at both Pendennis facilities in Falmouth and Palma in 2006, 2012 and 2015. Speaking fondly of the project, Wiekens says, “A boat like Adela, 1903, a lot of purists had a lot of criticisms at the time, but since she left the yard in 1996, she’s done so many miles and the owners have so much fun with it. Adela really has been all around the world and races and sails… It really has been great.”

But it’s not just beautiful classic sailing boats that comprise Pendennis’ refit and transformation portfolio (though there are a fair few, the 1928 Fair Lady and 1930’s-built Shamrock V both from Camper &amp; Nicholsons as well as the 1915 Herreshoff-built Mariette of 1915), and they are no strangers to large, modern superyachts. One of the most recent examples is undoubtedly the aforementioned 85.6-metre Aquila (ex; Cakewalk), which was redelivered to her owners in summer 2016.

The largest yacht to grace the yard - made possible of course by that substantial investment that proves to be reaping the rewards - and the largest refit project ever undertaken in the UK to date, the scope of the project at hand was daunting to say the least. A complete revitalisation of all five deck levels required the interiors on board to be stripped back to bulkheads across most areas, and saw the addition of a 60 square metre private deck area, a complete repaint, extensive technological upgrades and the rebuild of four generators - and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The result is, what the company believes, a new benchmark for large refit yacht programmes, a statement that would be hard to argue with.

Even though many in the industry have now come to automatically associate the Pendennis yard with refit and rebuilds, there are still plenty of new builds in Pendennis’ portfolio, including the largest privately owned luxury sailing catamaran in the world, the 44.2-metre Hemisphere, the 55-metre explorer yacht Steel (which was back home in the yard at the time of writing boasting a brand new paint job), and the 46-metre Ron Holland designed ketch, Christopher. Commenting on this assumption, Wiekens states, “We certainly do have more of a reputation now as a refit yard because more boats come through the yard, but for us, the big business plan was always a mix of both: new build and refit.”

So with such a varied and impressive portfolio, what is the secret to this steady success over the past quarter century? Of course long term visions, future proofing the company with investment and development, an attractive offering to both new build and refit markets, all come into play. But one of the most important aspects of their secret to success is their commitment to people. During my time at the yard, I met people from all sides of the business: from MD, to Marketing Director, from Project Managers to apprentices. People who have been at the company for a matter of months, people who have been there since the very beginning, and from the atmosphere and the attitudes I was presented with, it was obvious: Pendennis care about the people that work for them.

The almost family like nature of the business of course makes logical business sense: happy employees equals increased productivity and a more dedicated, passionate work ethic, which of course then plays into the success of a project and the quality of the end result. And, realistically, this is probably a huge contributing factor when it comes to clients coming back again and again and again. Wiekens says: “What we’ve got here is a big variety of how you can do things differently and just give a personal touch. A yacht is not just a thing to have, it’s a thing they want to put their own creativity and energy into. Clients don’t need yachts, they want them. If the experience isn’t fun, then they will never see you again.”

So with nearly 30 years’ under their belt at the top, what’s next for Pendennis? “Mike and I are on the runners right now, not on the helm!” Wiekens laughs. “We’ve put ourselves in a position where whatever the market will do, we will be able to adapt to it very quickly, and it’s not dependent on Mike and I. We have set out a long term strategy - as you can see with the investment we have done - and that is not just for the next two years. We’re now set up knowledge and skills wise to easily continue for another 30 years. The long term strategy is for another two, three, four generations to continue with this company. Boats will be different by that time, but I think boats like Adela, for example, will still be around. They still need to be looked after over the years, but these are boats that are going to be timeless.” With passion and people at their core, Pendennis certainly looks set to stand the test of time.

British superyacht repair facility Pendennis is currently enjoying a busy refit period with three yachts in the yard, the latest of which is the return of sailing yacht Adela. Increasing activity at Pendennis shipyard

Held from the 19th to 22nd March, the 2015 edition of the St Barths Bucket Regatta came to a close two days ago. The four classes of yachts competing in the race were Gazelles, Elegantes, Mademoiselles and Grande Dames, of which the Gazelles and Elegantes took the long course of 25.2 nautical miles, while the Mademoiselles and Grandes Dames completed the medium course of 20.9 nautical miles.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153067/image/large-25cccdba7de290d4bfe14545b3377e38.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153067">Winning in the Gazelles class was the 44.9 metre sloop Visione, which also took overall regatta honors to win the coveted ‘Bucket’. P2 took a sixth in the race to fall behind Visione and runner-up Inoui in the overall standings. Visione's tactician Jens Christiansen comments on the race, saying, “The 10-11 knot winds suited us well. We were sailing very fast on the long beat, going farther out because we are that much faster than anybody else and staying clear of other boats in other classes so as not to get entangled in them tacking on each other." Built in 2003, Visione's first Bucket was in 2004 and has competed in half a dozen Buckets since.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153068/image/large-18ab3b79859683e7fa25840360627ec9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153068">Moving on to the Mademoiselles, the 30.2 metre sloop Cape Arrow chartered by Pier Luigi Loro Piana turned in all second-place finishes to top the class. Cape Arrow's tactician Thomaso Chieffi, veteran of four America's Cup campaigns and a Volvo Ocean Race winner, says, "Today, we weren't hoping to win the series; we were looking to maintain our second, but with the little change of rating that occurred overnight to the leading boat (Bequia, which won both race one and race two and took on five more minutes of handicap for race three, in which she finished sixth) and the fact that today was more our race, it made us eventually score a second and win the series overall. We are very pleased with the result. It came a little bit out of the blue, but we feel somehow that we deserve it.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153069/image/large-91c189dd3f37fde2a49048f969df3acc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153069">The 46.4 metre Royal Huisman ketch Elfje started 21 minutes behind the 44.6 metre schooner Adela and edged her out at the finish by eight seconds to win in Elegantes. The two boats ended up sharing overall class victory in the interest of an amicable resolution to a safety rule debate, while close contender Marie, the 54.6 metre Vitters Shipyard ketch that had been tied with Adela and Elfje going into the final day of the race, finished sixth for a third overall.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153070/image/large-1c17691038ac3708a7b62cefefe702eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153070">Taking overall victory in Grand Dames was the 37.6 metre ketch Axia, who beat the previous days leader, the 55.9 metre Perini Navi ketch Rosehearty, in the last day of the Bucket. "Today was by definition, truly a medium-wind day," said tactician Robbie Doyle. "If it had been a light-wind course, we would have owed Rosehearty more time, and it would have been really tough for us. They would have had another five or six minutes, which is what we beat them by." Looking back at the 2015 St Barths Bucket Regatta

Held from the 29th January to the 1st February, this years annual Antigua Superyacht Challenge was hosted by Admiral’s Inn and Antigua Rigging in association with National Parks Antigua. Celebrating its fifth edition this year, a total of 11 yachts competed in total, with the 55.50 metre superyacht Adela proving victorious.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152785/image/large-cdd525f67bf80cf9f1ab51bb05c53bd4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152785">Amongst the Pendennis built Adela’s competitors was another vessel built by the British shipyard, the 42.42 metre Rebecca, as well as the 38.40 metre twin masted schooner Gloria. Gloria also has connections with the Pendennis shipyard, undertaking several extensive refit projects at their facilities in Falmouth over the years.The eleven vessel fleet took part in three days of pursuit style racing following the International Superyacht Racing Rule, the same rule that is applied to the biennial Pendennis Cup.Pendennis comments on the winning performance of Adela, stating, “We are delighted that Adela not only won her class in the 2015 regatta, but also finished as winner overall. Superyacht Adela wins Antigua Superyacht Challenge

Initially founded in 2008 the Pendennis Cup has grown year on year, creating a unique opportunity for classic and modern superyachts to showcase their sailing capabilities in the dramatic waters of Cornwall. Each of the four racing days usually brings its own unique set of conditions as Greg Perkins, Captain of Adela, explains: “Compared to other regattas we have competed in the racing is good as generally there is plenty of wind and the tidal waters make it tactically challenging. The shore side is great fun, with plenty of social events making for an exciting atmosphere.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/147052/image/large-8848001dfd3f54e230005d9bb2c6830d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/147052">Once again race management will be provided by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club and supported by renowned sailing officer Peter Craig, experienced in managing international events such as the Bucket Regattas, the Maxi Rolex World Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race. Peter Craig reflected on his experience of managing the 2012 Pendennis Cup: “I've been involved in both grand prix and superyacht racing events for over 20 years now and 2012 was my first Pendennis Cup. Pendennis Cup 2014 announcement of fleet

The beautiful classic 1920s superyacht Fair Lady first visited Pendennis in 1996 completing a full restoration including extensive engineering works following a survey of the steel hull and systems. She has remained a loyal visitor to the yard with subsequent visits in 2000 and 2006. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/141858/image/large-28021c62ffdd6853dd8d17b59cceb14a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/123740">Fair Lady recently arrived at Pendennis Palma for a six month winter refit. Work will include a 5 year MCA LY1 survey, a full overhaul of her systems and standing rigging. Also based in Palma currently is the 2004 Pendennis built yacht Margaret Ann. Six month winter refit for Fair Lady at Pendennis Palma

Courtesy of Colin Baldwin, CEO of RIB-X who builds custom superyacht tenders, I was travelling around the course on Day 2 of the Superyacht Cup between the fleet at 56 knots! This enabled us to follow both Classes in the race perfectly and I also benefitted from Colin’s superb knowledge of the Solent and the tricky tides. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140378/image/large-62cf41955db27669b623c92880d37128.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140378">Both Class 1 and 2 had been given a ‘sausage’ shaped course due to the postponed start, Class 1’s mark a mile further on. The second Pursuit race of The Superyacht Cup saw Seaquell set off first, hoisting their Spinnaker early, spilling the wind until crossing the line, as did many of the fleet on the westerly reaching course towards The Needles. Bare Necessities encountered a small problem with the hoist, sending a man up the mast to ensure the sock was fully up. Drumfire had the best start of the day from the pin end, looking extremely slick with their well-rehearsed crew. Athos and Savannah had reasonable starts, choosing to bear away along the start line until their start gun went before hoisting their spinnakers. Adela on the other hand came screaming up to the start with their spinnaker already up. Savannah and Mari Cha III chose the mainland end of the mark following Drumfire’s tactic, as opposed to the other yachts that had already set off. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140379/image/large-8605c1a37be82fc6eb90b3eb3547ecd3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140379">Much anticipation was on Hamilton before the start to see how she would perform after the extremely light airs on Day 1, with slightly more breeze on Day 2. Unfortunately she encountered a small problem with the spinnaker hoist, as it knotted but thankfully for them, and not the rest of the fleet, the problem was resolved quickly and once filled was a remarkable sight as she hunted down all those ahead of her! Hamilton chose the Island side, whilst Leopard 3 hoisted their spinnaker 40 seconds prior to their start gun, crossing the line at full speed in the conditions that were on offer. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140380/image/large-06659e7921358af358ae605d0647f652.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140380">Now all the yachts had started, an enthralling race of tactics and gambling played out in front of us around the narrow course in the Solent, some of the yachts restricted by as much as 20ft (6.2m) of draft in strong tides and gentle breeze! <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140381/image/large-77a31cdcb6d60dedc0380c1cd60b9a87.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140381">Athos gybes, choosing the Island shoreline with Adela following suit, catching up quickly on a superb first leg. Behind them, Mari Cha III chooses the mainland, as does Leopard 3 however she encounters headsail problems which by the first mark would cost them almost half a mile on Hamilton who rounds it ahead, as the leader of the Class 1 fleet. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140382/image/large-a4a0c724ae06e51aab5b7624ae67e89e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140382">As both classes neared their first mark, the wind shifted to a more easterly direction meaning a change in their predicted tactics, back down the Solent to the finish line opposite The Royal Yacht Squadron. Heartbeat led Drumfire, followed by Bare Necessities then Savannah, Adela, Seaquell and Athos. With the tide rushing towards them, Heartbeat chose the mainland side of the channel, whilst Drumfire gambled to cross the Solent hoping for a back-eddy (where the current doubles back on itself and actually flows in the opposite direction) close to the shore with her shallow draft to pay off despite the possibility of a wind shadow from the island. If the wind were to hold, she would have been laughing however sadly for her she couldn’t quite come in close enough to the shore because of the wind shadow from the island and therefore did not benefit as she would otherwise have done. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140383/image/large-bba38e5755d682eaca74ce098057fdd1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140383">The rest of the race spotted Drumfire’s misfortune ahead, the lighter yachts hugging the mainland shore, whilst Athos and Adela used their great ballast to their advantage, ploughing through the tide at times, opting for a shorter route to the finish line. Bare Necessities were having a great day, benefitting enormously from the local boys onboard, keeping up with Heartbeat who was trying desperately to break away. Then Athos decides to head towards the mainland shore, catching Adela unawares, what a comeback after Adela’s early take-over down the first leg! <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140384/image/large-483e97679b92da86664687ff165f8ada.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140384">Due to the positioning of the first mark, Class 1 had no choice but to race down the mainland shoreline, Hamilton really shining in the conditions, and Leopard 3 close behind tracking her every move. Hamilton gybes, Leopard 3 gybes, Hamilton gybes, Leopard 3 gybes etc. etc. – match racing at its best! Mari Cha III’s advantage on the start line did not seem to be enough as her distinct Dragon logo across her enormous spinnaker faded further behind; she needed another 5 knots of breeze to really race at her best. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140385/image/large-6557d3d67eee18020261b1bc5619701c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140385">As Hamilton, followed by Leopard 3 caught up with Class 2 around one mile from the finish line, the race had come to a nail biting close! Hamilton opts for the northern end of the finish line, so with nothing to lose, Leopard 3 crosses the tide and starts gunning towards The Royal Yacht Squadron end of the line! She’s catching, is it going to pay off?! Not quite! Hamilton takes it in a glorious performance for crew and spectators alike. This was their 6th day of sailing together, well done! <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/140386/image/large-5d41c99bf9f19f74bdd9cc5d6613c902.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140386">As the tide strengthened, those in the fleet with smaller sail area and lighter ballast struggled to hold on, as Athos crossed the line next. A fantastic effort and their celebrations onboard said it all, they were delighted to have beaten Adela who had got the better of them in Falmouth just a couple of weeks ago. Then in a perfect climax, the fight was on between Unfurled, who had excelled on the first day winning by a large margin, and Adela. Shadowing each other’s every move; they chopped and changed in position right up to the finish line where they were just metres apart abeam, the gun sounded twice in quick succession – less than a second – too close to call from where we were sitting in the RIB-X, which was sitting on the finish line! Unfurled literally pipped Adela to the post! What a day, and what a privilege to see these beautiful yachts race against one another in a competitive but friendly spirit. By Richard Callender

The Superyacht Cup day two race report

Organisers of the Superyacht Cup are preparing for one of their biggest years in 2012 as the entry lists for the popular Palma regatta and the brand new Superyacht Cup Cowes, UK have surged over the last two months. Pendennis Palma first quarter success

Organisers of the Superyacht Cup regattas have confirmed dates for the two editions of the popular regatta they will host next year including the first ever Superyacht Cup in Cowes, UK. The 16th edition of the Superyacht Cup Palma will take place in the traditional venue of Palma, Mallorca from 20-23 June, 2012. Popular with owners, guests, captains and crew, the Palma regatta is open to a maximum of 30 superyachts in the central location at Muelle Viejo surrounded by the spectacular sailing conditions in the Bay of Palma. One month later, owners are invited to participate in a special edition Superyacht Cup Cowes 2012 to take place in the waters of the Solent, UK from 22-25 July, 2012. Two Superyacht Cup events in 2012 

Pendennis has recently concluded its busiest refit season in their 23 year history, with six superyachts being finished over the past few weeks. A significant project undertaken was M/Y Audacia with an impressive list of updates completed in just nine weeks. This included comprehensive design improvements including a 2 metre stern extension, reconfigured aft curving staircases and underwater lighting which formed part of the overall restyling by Joanne de Guardiola Design. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/135205/image/large-fc056b2df3b7c9b6324956a399a99884.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/135205">Pendennis undertook the installation of a more modern deck crane to tie into the new aesthetics alongside various system upgrades including replacement of the A/C system and improvements to the stability of the vessel by way of ‘Quantum’ zero speed stabilisers to ensure comfort both at sea and at anchor. Audacia’s first trip following her visit to Cornwall was to the Cannes Film Festival where her new lines and features were greatly admired. Refit work was simultaneously undertaken on the schooner Adela, who was re-launched at the beginning of May. The schedule of works included updating of her furnishings by Pendennis’ interior design team, an engineering overhaul, new generators, paintwork and electrical work. This was also the first time that Adela has had her impressive mainsail replaced since her rebuild at Pendennis in 1992. S/Y Andromeda La Dea arrived at Pendennis in November 2010 for her ABS 20 year survey following which she has also received portions of new teak deck and a full exterior repaint by Pendennis’ experienced in-house paint specialists. This 1990 Perini Navi vessel is currently docked alongside the 37m explorer vessel M/Y Dardanella in Port Pendennis Marina whilst finishing works are undertaken before departure which is scheduled for the end of May. Dardanella’s programme of works included replacement Northern Light generators, a wet room for Bridge Deck to give more flexible pilot berth accommodation, reconfiguration of the Ship’s Office and the addition of a Jacuzzi on the sun deck as well as converting the Owner’s shower to a steam room. The team at Pendennis is well underway on a substantial refit of a 42m Feadship motor yacht, whose details remain under wraps. Also nearing completion is the sailing catamaran Hemisphere, which is due to be unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show in September. Flood up took place in May and Hemisphere’s impressive 53m wing mast is due to be installed following its delivery to the yard this week. M/Y Lady Georgina, M/Y Illusion and S/Y Constance have also paid a short visit providing a total of seven superyachts moored at the marina providing a truly impressive and unique sight in Falmouth Bay. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/135206/image/large-0fc5966be21ad0af9181670de3deb262.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/135206">Naturally Pendennis continues to be involved in more local projects, with short works completed on the iconic 181’ Cornish Chain Ferry, the King Harry Ferry (built by Pendennis in 2006), and a refit of S/Y Carte Blanche after her second winter stay in the yard. Built in 1967 by Nautor’s Swan Carte Blanche is the oldest Swan still to be in use and will now embark on her annual racing season around Falmouth. Superyacht refit update from Pendennis

Preparations are well underway for the 2011 Superyacht Cup regatta from 22-25 June in Palma. So far, 16 yachts have registered for the event including five brand new entries that have never competed in the event before. Palma De Mallorca gears up for 2011 Super Yacht Cup with new entries

Pendennis is delighted to announce that the 55m Feadship Illusion has been named as a finalist in the World Superyacht Awards, with the results due to be announced at the ceremony in London at the beginning of May. The extensive winter refit took just over 8 months to complete and included a 3-level 5m LOA stern extension with the addition of a drop-down beach club and enhanced tender garage, thereby substantially enlarging the amount of living space on board.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133910/image/large-ac229cf4708a77bed85f68237f97a0e1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/133910">The work also included significant engineering work (including a complete Lloyd’s 5-year survey), deck refurbishment, improvements to the crew quarters and bridge, as well as a dramatic changes to her interior through contemporary restyling of the Owner’s study and ‘sky lounge’ by Bannenberg &amp; Rowell Design.The Owner commented “Pendennis continually exceeded my expectations in terms of their high level of customer service, attention to detail and quality of finish, and final performance of the vessel. Pendennis’ success story continues

Tom Clegg has been awarded winner of the Queens Silver Medal by the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights as the Shipyard Apprentice of the Year 2010. This is one of the country’s most prestigious apprentice awards and has been presented to representatives from the ship building industry since 1945. Annual nominations for the Queens Silver Medal come from every yard in the UK with assessment taking place during several stages. Entrants are shortlisted to participate in a week long course and evaluation in Northumberland, following which six are selected for interview by the committee in London before the awards are announced. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/133427/image/large-4059fbced093da7d4265c12ca905176d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/133427">“The course in Northumberland was extremely demanding” explains Tom. “We were presented with a wide range of challenges, aimed at testing our leadership and teamwork skills as well as individual capabilities. The tasks ranged from physical trials such as overnight hikes and raft building, to ones which tested our endurance and mental capabilities. For instance we had to guard a flag throughout the night on one occasion, and on another morning we were subjected to interviews at 4am. Although it was a tough week it provided a unique opportunity to develop new skills and gain confidence in dealing with challenging situations.” Tom, who graduated from the apprenticeship scheme in September, is now employed as an engineer at Pendennis and currently working on the winter refit of SY <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2075">Adela</a>. Jill Carr, head of the Pendennis General Apprenticeship scheme, told us “It is representative of the high standard of our course that four apprentices were selected to be part of the initial assessment in Northumberland – only sixteen apprentices from throughout the UK were invited to attend this week. We are extremely proud of Tom’s achievement as the winner of this historic award.” Tom completed his apprenticeship in conjunction with Cornwall College: “Tom was always incredibly hard working and committed throughout his apprenticeship. I’m delighted for him that his efforts have been recognised by this prestigious award and wish him all the best in his career with Pendennis Shipyard.” said Vaughn Curnow, Liaison Officer from Cornwall College Business who worked with Tom throughout his studies. The General Apprentice Scheme at Pendennis has a formidable reputation with several awards gained over the past few years, including ‘Winner of the Year’ in the National Training Awards in 2009. The scheme continues to gain recognition not only due to the dedication and organisation of the apprentice management team, but also because of the high standards and hard work of the young people on the course. Pendennis apprentice wins Queens Silver Medal

After the first 2 days of racing the yachts were determined to use the strong winds to their full advantage on day 3. On Wednesday all yachts had a day’s rest from sailing during which all boats underwent maintenance, including fixing Adela’s 1 tonne spinnaker which was split on Tuesday and repairing the damaged mainsail. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132227/image/large-cb3edef84f36ef4504700f6f5d814dd0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132227">30 seconds to the start <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1190">Mariette</a> was sailing windward of <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2075">Adela</a> towards the line with Mariquita and Velacarina a little off the pace. The course was set to the northerly wind direction with a beat towards Gyllngvase Beach area as the first leg. Mariette was set with the Jackyard in place and Mariquita with her working topsail. Mariette tacked towards the east coastline looking for an inshore advantage and Adela stayed offshore heading towards the Helford before tacking back to the mark near Gyllyngvase Beach. Mariquita was blocked by Velacarina at the start but after the first tack and cross over Mariquita had taken the third place position and passed the stern of Mariette. Adela had a good lift approaching the Helford and then rounded the mark first ahead of the rest of the fleet. Mariette was second round with Mariquita close behind doing well in the lighter breeze. Velacarina started to launch her spinnaker on the leg to the Range A mark but the wind started to shift towards the west and gained strength to make it more of a close reach. Mariette and Mariquita stayed very close on this leg of the race with Velacarina just behind and Adela out in front rounding 10 minutes ahead. She would need to increase this lead significantly to win on handicap. The yachts sailed close hauled towards the Veryan mark passed Dodman Point with the wind increasing above 20mph. Mariette was able to capitalise on the breeze and pulled away from Mariquita and Velacarina. Mariette missed the lay line for the mark and had to put in an additional tack allowing Mariquita to gain ground and for Adela to extend her lead who judged the strong tide well. The sun came out for the approach to the finish, the line set between the mouth of the Helford and the Manacles. Adela had increased her lead and was over the line just under thirty minutes ahead of Mariette, enough to secure her second victory in the regatta ahead of Mariette, Mariquita and Velacarina. Pinuccia sailed the course on her own today with Tomahawk in the final throws of her mast repair at Pendennis Shipyard. Strong winds on day 3 of the Pendennis Cup

As the sea mist hung over the harbour, Day 1 of the Pendennis Cup began with a dramatic start in the Big Class as Adela, Mariquita, Mariette and Velacarina planned their approach to the start line. Mariquita was set flying with her working topsail and Mariette with the jackyard. With one minute to go all four yachts were on starboard approaching the line jostling for position with Velacarina to windward. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132204/image/large-5bef6c4385f53b23afb57c188c73786e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132204">As the countdown commenced it was extremely tight with the red protest flags raised on three of the yachts and Velacarina hitting the pin as she crossed the line. Mariette held the lead over the line followed by Adela on the first beat to the windward mark towards the Helford River. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132205/image/large-edd7f30173aabd0bda0e9fa1962ebe2f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132205">The small class followed 10 minutes later, a less dramatic start perhaps, but still a wonderful sight watching Pinuccia and Tomahawk dominating the harbour. Pinuccia was first over on port tack. However it wasn’t long before their class had its own drama as Tomahawk’s mast broke right at the top just as she approached the first mark, meaning she had to retire early. Throughout the first third of the race Adela, Mariquita and Mariette remained close, chasing each other up to the first mark before rounding and setting the downwind sails. Adela rounded first followed by Mariquita and then Mariette who over stood the mark. Quite a spectacle with the spinnakers of Adela and Mariquita and Mariette with the gollywobbler flying. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132206/image/large-483bb3a455f1101a77aff8747ca8c3e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132206">It was a dramatic sight as they passed between Gull Rock and the Roseland Peninsula, the fog-shrouded cliffs behind them. After passing round the mark Adela really took control of the race, taking a heading towards the coastline whilst Mariquita and Mariette sailed out to sea, planning for a later tack. Velacarina followed the coastal line too, but without the sail volume of the larger boats she fell behind. Adela soon disappeared off into the clouds towards the Manacles, whilst Mariquita and Mariette battled for second place. Mariquita tacked inshore to St Anthony lighthouse and took advantage of a wind shift opening up a good lead on Mariette, gaining on Adela. Adela led the reach to the finish followed by Mariquita, Mariette and Velacarina. A superb day on the water not without drama with a steady wind all boats heeled over, cap rails in the water, providing a stunning sight for the following fleet of over 12 spectator and press boats. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132207/image/large-ef632c5d995781f3e845bac38275d571.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132207">The second day of the Pendennis Cup once again started with grey skies and drizzle, however with a good wind it promised to be another day of close action around the course. With Tomahawk’s mast being fixed in the Pendennis workshops and Pinuccia withdrawing due to stronger winds it was a day for the big yachts to show off their speed. Once again it was a close start with Adela and Mariette battling at the start line, both having good starts fully powered up as they crossed between the starting buoy and committee boat. Mariquita reefed in her main to make the most of the winds but Adela took an early lead on the beat down to the first mark. As she rounded Helford she launched her spinnaker, providing the stunning sight of this beautiful 55.5m yacht in full sail. Mariette, Mariquita and Velacarina followed behind up to the second mark at Veryan, with Velacarina launching her mizzen sail on the downward leg. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132208/image/large-57c5d4ca9dbca21469f7504485fdb720.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132208">Adela had a strong lead on this leg however it was her turn to experience the unexpected dramas of racing as during a jibe her spinnaker wrapped and split, but she managed to sustain her lead down towards the Manacles mark. The spectator boat, with a top speed of approximately 10 knots, struggled to keep close to these amazing vessels as they powered down the course. As the yachts rounded the final mark Adela held her lead, the sun shining through the clouds to light her way to the finish line. Mariette achieved speeds of over 16 knots was the overall winner of the day based on adapted time. Day 1 and day 2 of the Pendennis Cup

It is now less than 1 week to go until Pendennis hosts the 2nd Pendennis Cup in Falmouth. Following the success of 2008 we have seven yachts confirmed with potentially more still interested. With over 200 crew visiting for the week’s racing and another 150 guests the event will provide plenty of excitement and entertainment on and off the water. With a combination of classic beauty and power when at full sail these yachts will provide an impressive spectacle as they race in and around Falmouth Bay. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/132078/image/large-8446544c2b17a3ce2217542a56c85e6a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/132078">The largest yacht we have attending is <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2075">Adela</a> at an impressive 55.5m and the smallest is Pinuccia at 14.6m. The Cup will be managed by the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association and the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club who have designed several different courses each one challenging the yachts to exploit their full potential and provide five days of exhilarating racing. The Race Office, centred in the National Maritime Museum’s Learning Centre, will also have information about each day’s course. The Pendennis Cup runs from Monday 9th to Saturday 14th August, with the boats setting sail daily (except for Wednesday) from Port Pendennis Marina between 9:00 -10:00am. Each race will begin at 11:00am with the boats returning to the marina at about 3:00pm. There is an opportunity to glimpse these glorious boats underway from Pendennis Point and from the viewing balcony at the National Maritime Museum where Pendennis will host a fascinating exhibition about building and racing these classic superyachts.
