During a yachting conference in London, his presentation caught the eye of captain and project manager Aaron Clark, as well as the representative of another owner. Both expressed interest in the same Swordfish concept – initially conceived as a successor to McMullen &amp; Wing’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1649" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Big Fish45.0m (147'8&quot;)McMullen & Wing Ltd2010">Big Fish</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3501" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Chirundos49.95m (163'11&quot;)McMullen & Wing Ltd2016">StarFish</a> (renamed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3501" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Chirundos49.95m (163'11&quot;)McMullen & Wing Ltd2016">Chirundos</a>) – forcing Marshall into an unprecedented position.&nbsp;"That was a big turning point in my career,” he recalls, “because it was the first time we had to choose one client over another and turn somebody down."<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Artefact80.0m (262'6&quot;)Nobiskrug2020">Artefact’s</a> now-iconic “crazy paving” window design was born from an internal studio competition, ultimately imagined by team member Geoff Harrington. The styling generated strong reactions and polarised opinion – a rare feat in the yachting world where look-alike designs are not uncommon. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/187188/image/large-16a4a14eb6a840307ab9c7b7a1cc4fed.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/187188">“Like most avant garde designs, people either really love it or they don’t,” says Marshall, adding that the owner’s obsessive attention to detail, and trust in the team’s aesthetic direction, made the project truly unique. “Most owners get decision exhaustion. He didn’t.”Marshall is known for his hands-on technical expertise and preference for substance over showmanship. In many ways, he represents a return to an era where naval architects led design holistically – both inside and out – with the aim of delivering well-reasoned solutions. He is anything but territorial when it comes to creative direction, however.&nbsp;“I try to maintain some flexibility in our design language and always defer when the design lead is someone else in the team,” says Marshall. “Design by committee is to be avoided, because it usually means you get tied down to a particular look.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304085/image/large-c97c6816b150803fe4e47b39b14628dc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304085" style="background-color: initial; font-size: 0.85rem;">This works for outside collaborations as well. For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a>, for instance, the studio initially developed both the interior and exterior design – only to step back when the owner envisioned a different aesthetic and engaged <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a> for the interior. Marshall fully encouraged the decision.“If you like our interior style, it’s probably the most efficient way to get to your goal,” he says. “If not, we’re happy to serve as the technical arm of your designer. I just love projects where owners are excited, the team works together smoothly, and no one cuts others down along the way.”Building Boats, Testing TheoriesSince Marshall joined forces with business partner Gordon Galbraith in 1998, the pair have grown their team from just three people to a 30-person operation, a third of whom now work remotely (all three of Marshall’s children – Max, Briggs and Calley – are actively involved in the business). The studio’s approach is defined by a deep respect for engineering, a bold appetite for experimentation, and a commitment to innovation that’s refreshingly grounded in reality.“Greg is the creative influence, the visionary, but he’s also the CEO who sets the tone,” says Galbraith. “I handle more of the technical side, especially structural and naval architecture. We’re very complementary in that way.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/374542/image/large-d0ebf213a0014e40c2c5f03f0ec83f6b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/374542">This balance has allowed the company not only to stay ahead in an increasingly complex industry, but to quietly lead from the front – especially when it comes to the growing pressure around sustainability and alternative propulsion. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/62" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architect Ltd. (Company)">Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architect Ltd</a> isn’t just a design studio – it’s a lab. Rather than wait for clients to greenlight experimental projects, his team has taken the brave step of becoming their own client.&nbsp;Currently, they are building a prototype electric runabout, entirely on their own dime. The 16-foot replica of a 1930s Gar Wood speedster is fitted with the motor, battery, and heated seats salvaged from a Nissan Leaf. Another project is a 42-foot all-electric catamaran tailored for the unique geography of British Columbia’s coastline. Most notably, they’re building a 22-metre catamaran powered by a methanol fuel cell system. Its aluminum hull and composite upper structure reflect the real-world demands of cruising in waters full of driftwood and ‘deadheads’ – partially submerged logs that have been swept out to sea.“We had to make it ridiculously light, so most of the structure is composite,” Marshall explains. “But from about 30 centimetres above the waterline down, it’s all aluminum, which is the only way to make it viable in these waters.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/374543/image/large-ad6597d92fee85a0bb33dc784c1194ca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/374543">Virtual Reality, Real EngineeringA few years ago, the studio was invited to give a talk on the potential of augmented reality (AR) in yacht design. The team developed a virtual walkthrough of an engine room, allowing users to explore and interact with the technical spaces. Marshall asked the audience if they wanted to give it a try. “No one budged,” he recalls. “It got awkward.”Then, fellow yacht designer Ron Holland stood up, put on the headset, and within seconds the atmosphere was transformed: “He was down on his hands and knees, looking under things, grabbing at virtual pipes,” says Marshall. “And once he did that, everyone else wanted to try. That was a pivotal moment and you could see the future right there. But the technology wasn’t quite ready yet.”Fast-forward a few years, and the technology has improved massively. Marshall’s team, which had stepped back from AR for a time, is now preparing to re-engage, but it won’t be just for showing off renderings to clients: “That’s secondary,” insists Marshall. “The real value is technical – design review and problem-solving.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/374541/image/large-a92b35e35ff277edaaa866b24cd7aeaa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/374541">When the inevitable topic of sustainability is raised, Marshall prefers to focus on efficiency. By improving the efficiency of yachts, such as using thinner materials and reducing the weight of components, there are inherent sustainability benefits: "Efficiency leads to sustainability," he points out. "When you reduce weight, you reduce fuel consumption, and that helps the environment."To this end, the studio is looking into roboforming, the dieless Incremental Forming Process that allows for mass customisation using metal materials that were previously too expensive (e.g. titanium) or heavy (e.g. steel) to use in large quantities. Millimetre by millimetre, synchronised robots deform and push the sheet stock until it is coaxed into the part’s final shape. From shifting political climates to growing pressure for local sourcing, the yacht market is becoming both more fragmented and more opportunity-rich.“We now track the country of origin of over 800,000 parts,” says Marshall. “That wasn’t even a consideration a few years ago. Today, we increasingly see clients that want to buy Canadian, or American, or whatever. This is a new level of awareness that is happening worldwide.”Shortly after our visit to the studio, Marshall set out on his own 65-foot classic motor cruiser Zest for a month-long vacation to the remote northern part of Victoria Island, a region where grizzly bears are more common than other boaters. Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architects is one of few internationally renowned design and naval architecture studios that call Canada their home. Headed by founder Gregory Marshall and his business partner Gord Galbraith, the team are impassioned by personal projects, and their portfolio is littered with exciting vessels that suit their owner’s needs to a T. We visited Marshall and his team of 16 employees at their base in Victoria at the end of last year, where he gave us an insight into two such projects, the VVS1 and Big Fish.

Most designers note that an indispensable element of superyacht design is the owner - his or her personality, routine and, of course, his demands of the vessel. Marshall states, “Private yachting is a personal thing that is really tied to personal dreams of what you’re going to do and how you’ll go adventuring.” This, however, is not as black and white as it may seem.

Realistically, to really get to know a client and to be able to translate his personality into metres of metal takes time - and time, unfortunately, is not a commodity that can be bought. Time is sparse for both designer and owner, meaning that the realisation of an owner’s dream superyacht is, in part, left to speculation. Calculated and educated speculation, but speculation nonetheless. The majority of the time, designers utilise their talent to successfully achieve the desired end product but, sometimes, this can get lost in translation.

This is something Marshall knows only too well, as not honing in on this philosophy nearly cost the brand one of their most high profile jobs; the the 34.18 metre all aluminium VVS1. In this case the owner requested a traditional yacht, inspired by a 27 metre project the team at Gregory C. Marshall had previously worked on. They were three months into the design before Marshall spent time with the clients in their home and really observed their lifestyle. He soon realised that they were headed in the complete wrong direction… and boldly suggested they rethink the whole design. The owners were not traditional people, so why were they designing a traditional yacht?

Marshall explains further: “I took a chance and I said to them, ‘I think we’re on the wrong track.’ It was a little risky to say when you’re already three or four months into the job! When I proposed the idea, he said, ‘Thank god. I thought we were going to have to fire you.’” The near fatal misjudgement of the clients needs and the subsequent ideal realisation of the project had a profound impact on Marshall, and he comments, “It changed the way we design boats.”

The success of VVS1 certainly opened doors for the company, and based on the success of the vessel, they were subsequently commissioned to work on the 45 metre McMullen &amp; Wing superyacht Big Fish, which has since become one of their most renowned projects. The owner of Big Fish liked what he saw with VVS1, and for six months, corresponded with Marshall in discussion for a brand new project. Marshall finally - albeit briefly - met with the client to discuss further in Monaco and the rest, they say, is history.

Before the client’s flight had touched down in his next destination, Marshall had already sent his preliminary ideas. Learning from his experience with VVS1, Marshall proceeded to spend a lot of time on the owner’s previous boat before finalising Big Fish. The sketches changed, though the concept stayed largely the same, testament to the development of Marshall’s creative conceptual talents.

Being a big fish in a small Canadian pond doesn’t seem to matter when the pond has an airport, and, of course, thanks to the powers of the internet, a point Marshall demonstrates as he continues, “We’ve got projects in pretty much every corner of the world right now. If things are lean in Europe, we can go to Asia. If things are lean in Asia, we can go to New Zealand. Up until a few years ago, we had no local work at all. We knew nothing about what was going on in our own backyard because everything was overseas.”

A driven and solid team with plenty of work to keep them busy, Marshall seems very content with the state of the brand right now, though the future may hold some expansion in order for the team to be able to work on projects exceeding 65 metres. He concludes, “We have a couple of big jobs that we’re looking at scheduling right now, and we may need three or four more people. I don’t see wanting to run a 70 person firm. I enjoy the hands on side of it too much to want to have somebody running the office. It still has to be fun.” Constant projects, an exciting client base, and an enthusiasm for design which is yet to be extinguished, Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architect’s future looks set to remain bright.

Big Fish, small pond: Gregory C. Marshall

Whether transporting 50-foot sport fishing boats or 250-foot luxury yachts, Dockwise Yacht Transport (DYT) and its fleet of semi-submersible ships give clients access to many of the world’s major shipping ports, which in turn lead to some of the most desirable travel destinations around the globe.In early February, DYT’s 556-foot (169.49 meter) Super Servant 4 started its annual passage to Brisbane (Australia) and Auckland (New Zealand), a sailing that originated in Palma de Mallorca in late November, 2012. Having stopped in Le Marin (Martinique), Port Everglades (Florida) and Golfito (Costa Rica) on its way to the South Pacific, the semi-submersible ship, which “sinks” to load and unload its floating yacht cargo, is now enroute to Golfito and will return to Port Everglades before it goes transatlantic. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/143308/image/large-d2b636e9f305afc1a4e8fc7fd2e7a3d6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/143308">Currently aboard Super Servant 4 is Glen Kerunsky’s (Calgary, Canada) 64-foot (19.66-meter) motor yacht Mystery Ship, with which Kerunsky has cruised the South Pacific for the last three-and-a-half years.“The last time we used Dockwise was in 2008, to ship our boat from Long Beach to Vancouver,” said Kerunsky. “We cruised Mystery Ship all the way down to the South Pacific from Canada, but if we could do the trip again, we would start by shipping the boat on Dockwise to Auckland and begin our trip there. The country is a must-see, and there are so many friendly people.” Kerunsky and his wife Cindy enjoy scuba diving but they like to discover each of their new destinations both by sea and by land. After they had exhausted their options in New Zealand, they cruised north to Tonga and then west to Fiji where they did more diving. The next stop was the Vanuatu Islands. “It is a very friendly place,” said Kerunsky. “All of these places make you feel like you are stepping back in time, and it’s great because many of the islands are so remote that many tourists cannot get to them.” After exploring the Vanuatu, the couple cruised to New Caledonia, and from there it was a four-day run to Australia. In Australia, they explored the coastline and dove the Great Barrier Reef before cruising south to Brisbane to ship their boat. “Dockwise is timely, easy to work with, and there is always a representative to talk to,” said Kerunsky, acknowledging that when things go like clockwork, it’s easier for yacht owners to pursue the wilder of their dreams. Charter yacht VvS1 moving towards the Mediterranean

A collection of new listings hit the seas last month at CNI. CNI’s latest brokerage and charter news 

The 34m (111ft) tri-deck expedition style motoryacht commenced construction at Alloy Yachts in September 2005 and was launched in April 2007. The yacht was commissioned by a prominent New Zealand businessman and named <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/65">VvS1</a> (a term used in the grading of diamonds). <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/122504/image/large-fe77ab4dc16f9b0cc70f37edb30a8e36.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/122504"> <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/65">VvS1</a> is built in aluminium and complies with the Lloyds Register SSC Rules and the Large Yacht Code. The design is by Gregory C Marshall Naval Architects. She has a 7.78 m (25.5 ft) beam, draft 2.23m (7.3 ft) and displaces 190 tonnes. The yacht is powered by two Caterpillar engines each 475 hp (354 kw). Two Caterpillar 51kw generators operate the ship’s onboard systems. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/65">VvS1</a> is fitted with active roll stabilisers and carries 34000 litres of fuel. She cruises at 11 knots and has an extended range of 4300 nautical miles. Outside docking stations are located on the port and starboard bridge wings and a further station aft on the bridge deck. Fresh water storage capacity is 7,000 litres and is supplied by two water makers, which produce 13000 litres per day. Two tenders are stored on the bridge deck aft. One of these is 6.5 metres and powered by a 150hp outboard. Both tenders are launched by the ships hydraulic crane. The interior design has been developed by the owners, Gregory C Marshall and Alloy Yachts design office. The interior timber joinery is American white oak panels with a white stain, and finished with the grain exposed and slightly raised. Wenge cabinetry is featured throughout the guest areas. The bamboo interior soles are laid in 90mm planks with wenge inlays and matt finished. The accommodation includes a master suite forward on the main deck and three double guest cabins forward on the lower deck, all with ensuites. Crew quarters consist of three cabins aft on the lower deck and the Captains cabin and ships office on the bridge deck. The saloon and dining area for eight guests is on the main deck. The galley is on the main deck between the dining room and aft deck dining area. Meals can be served directly to the interior or exterior servery bars fwd and aft of the galley. A Teppanyaki bar is located on the fly bridge. Aft on the bridge deck is a full sized gymnasium and cinema. Dive equipment and compressor are located in the lazarette. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/65">VvS1</a> is flagged in the Cayman Islands.

Alloy Yachts launch VvS1

Last Saturday Alloy Yachts launched their latest yacht, the 34m (111ft) <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/65">VvS1</a>. With her dark grey hull and square lines she looks like a small naval vessel. The yacht was designed by Gregory C Marshall Naval Architects for a local client and she will be fitted out during the next months at the Viaduct Harbour in Auckland. <div align="center"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/122360/image/large-c7da103f777482e4428cd74b6fe5e46e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/122360"></div> <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/65">VvS1</a> was built in aluminium and complies with the Lloyds Register SSC Rules and the Large Yacht Code. She has a 7.78 m ( 25.5 ft) beam, waterline length of 30.14 m ( 99 ft) and a draft of 2.23m ( 7.3 ft). The yacht is powered by twin 475 HP Caterpillar B rated engines and two Caterpillar 51kW generators operate the ship's onboard systems. With a fuel capacity of 34,000 litres she can reach 3110 nm at a speed of 13 knots. The interior design has been developed by Gregory C Marshall, Alloy Yachts in-house team and the owner. She has a modern and minimilistic interior, including bamboo and ebony floors with lime washed walls. Two tenders are stored on the bridge deck, aft of the sky gymnasium.
