“I&nbsp;love being by the river. Water, the tide, and moons mean a lot to me. I’m Cancerian, and there is something very important to me about moving water, it's inspiring,” says Andrew Winch, yacht designer and founder of design studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design</a> during our interview one crisp autumn morning in London.&nbsp;While sitting in his recently renovated office at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design</a> in the Old Fire Station, it’s clear to see why he loves working here. The calm, peaceful surroundings of the idyllic neighbourhood and the stream of people and boats that travel up and down the Thames serve as the ideal backdrop for nurturing the creativity needed to design a yacht - or a plane, or an office, or a new house.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/64439/image/large-e22ed37c56e421d6d93427cd6f7ade0e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/64439">“We’ve been on the same stretch of the river Thames watching the tide go in and out for 34 years now,” Winch continues while looking out over the roaring river. A passionate sailor from a young age and an avid art collector, he is surprisingly soft-spoken for such an influential man within the industry. Having penned some of the industry’s most notable superyachts like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Areti85.0m (278'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2017">Areti</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2074" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Madame Gu99.0m (324'10&quot;)Feadship2013">Madame Gu</a>, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dubai162.0m (531'6&quot;)Platinum Yachts FZCO2006">Dubai,&nbsp;</a>and designed interiors for iconic yachts such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5967" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dilbar156.0m (511'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2016">Dilbar</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cloud 974.0m (242'9&quot;)CRN Spa2017">Cloud 9</a>, Winch is unabashedly open about the foundation of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design</a>. During our talk over coffee and stroopwafels, he shares his challenges as a designer, as well as his vision for the future of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design</a>.In the three decades since the studio’s foundation in Winch’s family bedroom, it has grown exponentially, employing over 100 designers, architectures, interior decorators, and more. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design’s</a> expansive portfolio includes yacht interiors and exteriors, chateaux, beach villas, houses, offices, helicopters and privates planes. “If we can't survive with that much diversity, then we're clearly not doing good enough job,” &nbsp;Winch notes with a chuckle.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/64440/image/large-4e142732723f38832014b66188488a90.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/64440">As one of the few studios in the world to work in yacht design, aviation and architecture, Winch admits that when he first set up <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Andrew Winch Design</a> with his wife Jane in 1986, he only wanted to design sailboats. However, he quickly realised that the studio would be very short-lived if he only worked on sailing boats. “You only have to hit the first recession to realise that the sailboat market was probably at that point less than ten percent of the motor yacht market. Also, the motor yacht market was probably ten percent of what it is today.”&nbsp;Finances were not the only reason why Winch decided to move into other design fields, despite never having trained as an architect or interior designer - clients offered the chance to expand into aviation and architecture."We were invited to design our first aeroplane interior by a sailboat client,” says Winch. ”He did not go through with the sailboat in the end, but we ended up doing the interior of a&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5137" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Boeing Company (Company)">Boeing</a>&nbsp;Business Jet (BBJ) 2 for him. It was our first plane. I had no idea what a BBJ was, but I said if its a private jet, then I want to do it. I'm an annoyingly open person to opportunity. I think ‘let's have a go’ must be my motto for life.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/64444/image/large-1ff95c34fa00d23a1c5b03b4df032578.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/64444">Since then, the studio has gone on to work on other aircrafts such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5137" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Boeing Company (Company)">Boeing</a> 767s, Airbuses, Falcon 7xs, and helicopters. His willingness to take on all luxury projects, whether they be on the sea, air, or land is also partly thanks to the influence of his mentor, the late Jon <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a>. After graduating with a degree in 3D Design from the Kingston College of Art, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg</a> encouraged Winch to learn more about yachting by travelling around the world. So Winch went to work as a skipper on a 52’ sailing yacht and sailed to the Caribbean, where his eyes were opened to the world of superyachts. “I’ve grown from that to understanding things like the 156-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5967" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dilbar156.0m (511'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2016">Dilbar</a>, which has a 24-metre swimming pool inside,” he says with a chuckle.&nbsp;Afterwards, he returned to London to work at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg’s</a> studio, where he served as sailing boat manager for six years before deciding to set up his studio, a move which the late designer fully supported. “Jon never accepted that yesterday’s solution was all that could be done. He constantly challenged himself as well as the shipyards, designers, and clients he worked with, forever pushing them to create the exceptional instead of the norm,”&nbsp;he adds. “He taught me to be open-minded and never pigeonholed.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/64442/image/large-76942cae34c487b501ef3223fdb50dba.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/64442">This sense of willingness also helped instil Winch with a strong head for what is and what isn’t a feasible project for the studio to take on. For example, the size of a project does not make him nervous, not in the slightest.“The complexity of a project or the decision-making of a client can make me nervous, but we are regularly asked to look at projects. My initial comment is always ‘let me look at it’ - it does not matter what it is - &nbsp;and give me two weeks to assess it. I have to see if we have the right team, desire, and if it commercially makes sense for us to do it. Those are the parameters in business.”&nbsp;While working on the interiors for the 156-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5967" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dilbar156.0m (511'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2016">Dilbar</a> in 2014, he was approached by Jeanneau to work on a project for a new sailboat design. Winch had originally worked with the company to develop a full range of sailboats, but it had gone bankrupt before the first model could be built. Now 20 years later, they were asking him to work on a new 64’ model. “I said I would be interested in doing it if we made a production line, from 50’ to 64’ and we called it Jeanneau Yachts,” says Winch firmly. The company agreed, and they currently have a number of production models under construction, with the new model coming out the end of next December.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/64443/image/large-446d76f3b499153731648d11d4b0a374.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/64443">Winch himself owns a 64’ Jeanneau sailing boat, which he enjoys sailing on whenever possible with his family. However, just because he holds an affinity for sailing does not mean that he prefers designing sailboats over motor yachts, aeroplanes, or interiors. “It’s just as complicated to work with Jeanneau and create a 64’ sailboat as it is to design the interiors for a BBJ - you have to design every single, tiny detail before it goes into production.”&nbsp;All these projects do pose their unique challenges, ones that Winch and his team relished in working on. For example, the 156-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5967" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dilbar156.0m (511'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2016">Dilbar</a> was complex for a number of reasons. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5967" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dilbar156.0m (511'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2016">Dilbar</a>&nbsp;was a complicated project because of the scale of the job. We delivered it all turnkey - all the paintings were put on, all the decorations hung up, the full interior design ready.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/42877/image/large-5c82dd9d0e6cc35efc153cebe91a32ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/42877">After approving the initial design with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5967" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dilbar156.0m (511'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2016">Dilbar’s</a> owner and his team, Winch did not even see the client for three years while the studio was working on the project. Winch did not speak with him until the delivery of the yacht. In the end, the design team created seven different full-sized, complete mockups of her interior, including the swimming pool to fully understand what the owner was looking for."We had something along the lines of 27 lorries delivering all the furniture, accessories and decorations. There were more than a thousand scatter cushions delivered as well, each one custom-made for specific spaces on board. We made a different design for each cushion too - that is the level and attention to detail we go to for interiors.”&nbsp;The studio’s interior design was such a success that the owner requested all his belongings be moved from his previous superyacht Ona to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5967" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dilbar156.0m (511'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2016">Dilbar</a> within 24 hours so he could live on his new home. “That’s a true story - it was amazing,”&nbsp;says Winch with a smile. “The project was about giving him a new home, one that he felt fitted him like a glove and we succeeded.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/34738/image/large-f46d753852d700d8bbe8d414a2353105.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34738">Making their clients' dreams come true is a cornerstone of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design</a> philosophy, and each project encourages Winch to push himself to the next level, such as one the studio’s larger superyacht projects set to launch next year, the 111-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> motor yacht Tis. “She is a classic, and I've said this to Peter Lürssen - I believe that Tis is a pinnacle of classic design in the context that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/17" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bannenberg & Rowell Design (Company)">Bannenberg’s</a> first yacht design Carinthia V was. I hope that Tis is considered as elegant and iconic in 40 years as Carinthia V&nbsp;was,” he says excitedly.Created for a client who aims to spend a lot of time on the superyacht, the custom Tis features a bespoke swim platform for the owner to give his guests a warm welcome. An equally sophisticated interior nicknamed ‘cashmere cream’ matches her elegant exterior adding to her timeless charm. “It’s soft, gentle and classic. You could say it has the appeal of a London hotel like Claridge's or the Ritz.”&nbsp; As founder and creative director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design</a>, Winch works on the creative aspects of all the projects the studio takes on. Although he does not meet every client personally, he does not necessarily want to. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/25138/image/large-c73c1085c4e38001e1ed6ac3b8ff5825.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/25138">“Each one of our clients walks through the door with a dream. They don’t come through the studio front door and say ‘I want a Winch.’ They come in and say ‘I have a dream.’” He jokes that the team can’t keep him off them, but it is clear to see that Winch is proud of the team he has created. He speaks fondly and warmly of employees who have stayed with the studio for 24 or 25 years working remotely and quips that no one ever seems to leave. They only seem to be growing.&nbsp;“We have a talented, multifaceted team of designers here, and they are just as able to design the exterior of a yacht as they are chateaux.” At the moment half of the studio’s business is architecture-related due to the number of projects they take on, while the other half is divided between aviation and yachting. However, Winch is quick to add that this does change, and the studio goes through phases all the time. “You know big jobs, small jobs, too many jobs, not enough jobs - that's typical, and you learn how to cope, how to go through them while structuring and strengthening the business.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/13310/image/large-538cd77398e2218f118000c2efd4d352.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/13310">One of the most significant changes Winch and his wife Jane initiated within the company’s structure was the transition from Andrew Winch Designs to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design</a>. The new strategy, which was implemented over two years ago, was developed to strengthen the studio’s culture and ensure its longevity while supporting its growth. “We were larger than we felt we could handle and Jane decided in the longer-term that she wanted to retire.”&nbsp;So began the search for a suitable candidate would be able to take over the reins at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design</a>. “We said let’s hire someone who will tell us what we can do better than we can.”&nbsp;Their search led to the appointment of Clive Beharrell, a long time friend of Winch, as non-executive chairman. One of his first tasks was to examine how the studio could improve on its business management, which ultimately led to the hiring of Aino Grapin as CEO.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/64441/image/large-74960b580ae75e62191ac76a1bf32ede.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/64441">"I think it was critical to find the right cultural fit. Aino has been here for two years now, and we’ve done a lot of growth and development in many areas, like organisational structures.” For example, she has helped implement an internal magazine called World of Winch, reorganised the studio's departments across the building and encourages team lunches and activities. In addition, the studio has hired another 30 employees since her appointment and grown as much as 30 percent. It’s safe to say that with Grapin and Beharrell overseeing the studio’s business and management, Winch is confident of the company’s growth.&nbsp;“You have to be realistic about the importance of running a strong, stable business that you know many people rely on. But the more we can build talent and the stronger we are, the more successful we can be.” Success to Winch is not the be all, end all, rather it represents security for him and his employees to be able to come in and not worry about the future - regardless if Winch himself is still working as the creative director. “I would like to see this business be more successful in 20 years than it is today,” he admits. “I don’t want to see it die, and many, many design studios die.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/13292/image/large-c296bacda86eb2995e6ac1b5748f7394.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/13292"> However, Winch does not have retirement in mind any time soon. “I don’t think I like the word retiring,” he muses. Instead he aims to keep himself busy sailing, working on projects and travelling. “I'm going to America's Cup in New Zealand in 2021, and I already booked that in the office diary. I’m booked up from the next three to four years minimum."&nbsp;At the same time Winch is also keen to share his knowledge and experience with the younger generation as an external tutor at a design or art college one day as he wants to support creativity both inside and outside of the studio. “I am developing a culture of working within the group to support the group, rather than lead the group. Jamie Edmiston is one of the most recognisable faces of the superyacht business - and it’s not only down to his trademark red hair. At the helm of the long-standing British brokerage firm Edmiston &amp; Company since 2014, Jamie has been an instrumental figure in the world of superyachts for a number of years. Originally joining his father’s company in 2001, he quickly injected a much-needed burst of fresh, new thinking to the traditional brokerage sphere. That thinking resulted in an incredibly successful branding campaign for the Edmiston name - something which, at the time, was unheard of in superyacht brokerage. After all, the world was still new to the digital game and, if you can even imagine it now, Facebook was yet to be born. Looking to the future once again in an ever-evolving landscape, here we get Jamie’s insight into the past, present and future of superyacht brokerage.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/49662/image/large-7742892b261fae6afb21fc3dedcb2ab9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/49662">1. Edmiston has played a defining role in the superyacht business since its establishment. When you were appointed CEO how did you ensure the company continued to play that leading role?&nbsp;The yacht business has grown significantly in the last 20 years, and as part of that rapid expansion, several companies and individuals stand out as defining significant aspects of the business. In terms of brokerage, there are a handful of firms that stand out as innovators. I think it’s fair to say that Edmiston is one of those. In 2001 when I joined my father at the company, we launched the red Edmiston brand. This was one of our most important innovations. Branding was - and I think always will be - my first passion, and was relatively unheard of in superyacht brokerage at the time. &nbsp;Within the brokerage sector only one other company initially reacted, and even today there are probably only a few companies that have a notable brand identity. &nbsp; &nbsp;The business has evolved. I’m very proud to say that Edmiston has remained one of the key players in the industry, and I am committed to ensuring we continue to be at the forefront and maintain a leadership role.&nbsp;2. In 2011 you took a three-year hiatus, leading an investment in the luxury brand LINLEY. Can you see yourself working outside of the superyacht business again?Definitely. But I’m not planning on leaving the yachting business any time soon. Firstly I am fortunate enough to have such an established position. Secondly, Edmiston is our family business and I cannot imagine leaving that. Of course, other things do interest me and if the opportunity presents itself I could very likely explore these interests… perhaps as an investor or in some kind of executive or non-executive role. &nbsp;As I said, branding is a particular area of interest for me. &nbsp;Running LINLEY was very rewarding and enjoyable, and a lot of the success of the business came from my connections within yachting. One of the great things that the yachting business affords you is the opportunity to meet and connect with people who have been successful in a wide range of things.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/15190/image/large-25a003ee9fc830f0b3d8ae8704878bea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15190">3. As well as the day-to-day running of the business, you’re also very much an active yacht broker. What are some of your most memorable sales?As a company, Edmiston has been involved in quite a number of significant sales over the years. Just a couple that spring to mind includes the 115-metre Lürssen-built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)">Pelorus</a>, the 112.8-metre Bremer Vulkan-built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/299" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Le Grand Bleu112.8m (370'1&quot;)">Le Grand Bleu</a>, and the 74.5-metre Blohm + Voss-built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/901" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zeus74.5m (244'5&quot;)">Enigma</a> (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/901" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zeus74.5m (244'5&quot;)">Zeus</a>) which we’ve sold at least twice.&nbsp;Personally, the sale of the 110-metre Lürssen project <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1969" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Radiant110.0m (360'11&quot;)">Darius</a> (now<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1969" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Radiant110.0m (360'11&quot;)">&nbsp;Radiant</a>) was quite memorable…it was the largest brokerage deal ever at that time. With similar lines to the original <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1850" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ona110.0m (360'11&quot;)">Dilbar</a> (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1850" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ona110.0m (360'11&quot;)">Ona</a>), she was undoubtedly influenced by<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus115.0m (377'4&quot;)">&nbsp;Pelorus</a>. The other sale that stands out is the 60-metre Benetti <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/508" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Andreas L60.0m (196'10&quot;)">Andreas L</a>. The owner is a close friend of mine and she has great sentimental meaning to him and his family, being named after his late father. &nbsp;&nbsp;4. You travel a lot in your role, and a necessary part of the job is testing the product. Tell us: what makes the perfect yacht?&nbsp;I have been fortunate enough to spend time onboard yachts over the years. Whilst the majority is business related, there have also been a handful of occasions that have been for pleasure. The design and innovative engineering side of yachting really interests me. A yacht has to be as technologically advanced as a warship but has to be as comfortable as a five-star hotel. A yacht is somewhere for barefoot living and is - undoubtedly - the best place to holiday as a family. And if you need to be working but still want to be with your family, a yacht provides this amazing opportunity to move from business to family time almost immediately.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20969/image/large-f051682a6cccded7d1824493db379c09.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20969">5. How do you see the role of the digital world developing in regards to superyacht brokerage and charter? &nbsp;The development of the digital world has certainly helped facilitate the timely delivery of accurate information to clients. &nbsp;This has been the greatest advantage I think. The advent of online video, high-resolution imagery and very immersive multimedia experiences allows people - some of whom have never chartered a yacht before - to get a great idea of what the experience on board a yacht can be. This in itself can only help grow the yacht business. Aside from media, I’m not convinced that digital developments such as Uber or Airbnb style platforms will work in yachting, I think the transactional elements are far more complicated than people perhaps recognise. &nbsp;6. Change in the traditional world of yachting is slow. Will we see significant changes to ownership in the near future?&nbsp;There is a lot of talk about new ownership models. I don’t really know how much the traditional models of ownership can or needs to change. In my experience, fractional ownership for large yachts is a challenging proposition. As yet no one has done it successfully. Possibly someone will make it successful at the lower end of the market for yachts up to 100 feet, but in my view, once you get to the larger yachts there are many obstacles and hurdles that just don’t make it compelling. A yacht is not a jet. A jet is a business tool that you use for a set period of time - maximum 14 hours - to get from A to B, and the successful operators have a large number of planes available that can be easily relocated geographically. A yacht is a location-based experience; a home away from home that takes time to position from one location to another. It’s a different proposition which makes these alternative models a challenge. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/16369/image/large-965bae404080e4b5423574ff834bb23f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/16369">7. There are a couple of new charter companies that are backed by superyacht owners, who market an alternative to the traditional charter process. What do you think of this development?I am a businessman; therefore I support innovation and respect those who are prepared to invest their own money in new businesses within the yachting space. I think the models such as Ahoy Club and Yotha may work at the smaller end of the market - say from 40 to 75 feet - but for larger charters, the role of an experienced broker will always be key. I spoke to a client recently who told me he had been offered a yacht via an online broker for 10% less than we had offered it to him and his son had booked it to save some money. He told me that he will never do that again. He said that “the planning was a nightmare, no one was managing the itinerary and helping us with the planning, and when we had an issue with the yacht there was no one to call and help sort the problems. What should have been a relaxing holiday was the opposite.”&nbsp;The key point to understand is this; yachting has a lot of moving parts, therefore it can be complicated, and when it is complicated you want an expert there to guide you and help you sort problems. That support is priceless; I would argue that it is false economy to do it on the cheap because it doesn’t always work out. Never underestimate the value of using a leading broker; you are buying their network, their relationships and their experience - much of which has been built up over many years. When you are trying to relax that is priceless.8. What do you identify as some of the key areas for improvement in the brokerage industry?&nbsp;As with any business, there are areas that could be improved, but equally, I don’t think this is a broken business. There are many examples of successful companies and individuals who do a fantastic job, both in terms of leadership and innovation. If you look at how the industry presents itself nowadays, versus 15 years ago, the developments and advancements have been significant, particularly in terms of marketing and getting the message of yachting out to new people around the world. &nbsp;&nbsp;Organisations such as Sybass, LYBRA and events such as the Monaco Yacht Show, are continually pushing the yachting message and whilst there will always be new clients we want to attract, on the whole I think its been successful.&nbsp;More and more people are discovering yachting; and once discovered it's pretty addictive. No holiday on earth compares to one on board a large yacht. Yes, it is expensive, but it delivers so much in terms of levels of service, privacy, comfort, security. &nbsp; You only need to look at social media to see how many more people are enjoying a holiday on board a yacht nowadays.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/18829/image/large-eab2ac9f90cb1244b9a2ff4bdcaff14c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/18829">9. How has the role of broker changed in a rapidly evolving superyacht business?&nbsp;The fundamental role of the broker in any industry has not really changed, and I do not know how much it can change. A broker – in any industry - puts a deal together between two parties and takes all the stress in between and makes a deal happen. &nbsp;A broker acts as a shock absorber to make a deal happen. between the two involved parties. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;In yachting, a good broker has the ability to make a deal happen – not just deliver messages between parties. They need to not only understand their subject, but also the people they are dealing with, right through the spectrum. There are plenty of examples in yachting where brokers with completely different styles of doing business are both successful.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/41790/image/large-3fd05144629a31880d61507719312e72.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/41790">10. What is your advice for a successful career in the superyacht business?We get a lot of CV’s and enquiries for roles in the yacht business, and where possible, I try and meet as many people as I can. Personally, I am less concerned with someone’s age; talent is what really counts. And whilst experience is important in yachting, it’s not the only defining point. Hard work, drive and intelligence will always play a key role in success; we have a number of young talented people at Edmiston who are considered to be amongst the best in the industry.&nbsp;I tell those interested in getting involved in the brokerage business that it’s important to understand that yacht broking is the ‘disappointment business’. You can work for weeks or even months on a deal, only for it to collapse at the last moment. If you can learn to deal with that and accept that disappointment element, you are 50% there. Once you have reconciled that; the next attributes are hard work and commitment - you need to be prepared to work whenever you are awake. This is not a 9-5 business; the yacht business is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It’s a way of life as much as a job; and if you look around the industry, the relatively small group of brokers who are consistently successful are those who truly live it. And of course, the last key attribute is luck. The 110-metre Ona in Monaco

Launched at the Lürssen shipyard in Germany in 2008, the 110m superyacht Ona (ex Dilbar) was designed by Tim Heywood, and shares a rather similar exterior profile with her two sisters, Pelorus (2003) and Radiant (2009). Her highly ornate interior is the work of designer Alberto Pinto. Before having had taken delivery of Ona, her owner had a 66-metre Oceanco superyacht, which was sold and is now known as Natita. Since taking delivery Ona, the owner has taken delivery of yet another yacht, this time a 156-metre superyacht built by the same German shipyard. Fitted with a combined diesel mechanic and diesel-electric propulsion system, Ona is considered one of the ‘greener’ large superyachts in operation today. Hiding behind Ona is on of Monaco’s residents, the 116-metre Atlantis II as well as the 92.5-metre Feadship, Royal Romance.

A rare insight into the build of the world’s largest yacht in terms of volume has been presented by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> today. Seen here for the first time side by side are two of the most covered yachts in superyacht media history. The story of one owner’s quest for a larger yacht lead to the construction of the massive 156 metre superyacht now known as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5967" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dilbar156.0m (511'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2016">Dilbar</a>. The 110 metre vessel which roamed the seas since her launch back in 2008 under the same name, was renamed Ona earlier this year. On Instagram we came accross these photos taken last summer of the 99 metre Feadship Madame Gu and the 110 metre Lürssen Dilbar. Madame Gu is the largest Feadship to date. The 99-metre masterpiece was created by the Feadship yard in Makkum and is also the largest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands. Dilbar is a 110 metre Lürssen, built in 2008 to a design of Tim Heywood and with an interior by Alberto Pinto. Radiant was built in 2009 by the Lürssen Shipyard in Bremen. She has a length of 110 metres and an exterior design by Tim Heywood. Her interior by Yabu Pushelberg is a closely guarded secret, and no photos have ever been published. As far as we know, Radiant is the only superyacht ever built, to have an interior by design duo Yabu Pushelberg. <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/470">Dilbar</a> is a 110 metre Lürssen, built in 2008 to a design of Tim Heywood and with an interior by Alberto Pinto. Dilbar is a close sistership to superyacht <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/298">Pelorus</a> and <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1969">Radiant</a>. She ranks as the 23rd largest yacht in the world. Dilbar was the first yacht in the world with particle filters on the main engine exhausts. Her original owner sold her when he took delivery of a much larger yacht, the 110 metre Lürssen <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1850">Dilbar</a>. The yacht was renamed Ona, and like in her days as Dilbar, stayed a highly private yacht. It wasn't until she was sold again in 2010, to her current owner, that we learned more about this yacht. The new owner made the yacht available for charter, allowing a first look inside her beautiful Alberto Pinto interior. Dilbar in Valencia

With five deliveries in 2008 Lürssen has had one of it's busiest years. The 155m Al Said, 70m Martha Ann, 60m Vive la Vie, 110m Dilbar and 78m Madsummer, all left the yard for their cruising grounds. 2009 will see three deliveries of yachts between 60 and 110m. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127042/image/large-954af22de7fedecb6781b8a05618cc50.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127042">Arkley is a 60m superyacht and delivery is planned in June 2009. The exterior design is by Espen Oeino and the interior by Mark Berryman. The interior design is a combination of a modern but also very classic style which is carried throughout the whole yacht. Project Darius has a length of 110m and has an exterior design of Tim Heywood with an interior of Glenn Pushelberg and will see delivery in summer 2009. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/127043/image/large-15764f66b86024b79bfe871bb799c7a7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/127043">The third yacht to be delivered is project Scout, a 75m superyacht for a repeat owner who realizes yet another dream in a 12m longer yacht. Scout will see delivery in October 2009. In February 2009 project J24 was launched in the traditional fashion: down the slipway. She is an 84m superyacht with exterior and interior design by Andrew Winch. Delivery will be in 2010. Lürssen to deliver three superyachts in 2009

On 20th August, Lürssen delivered the 110 metre project Opal, now christened Dilbar, six weeks ahead of schedule. Dilbar is the first yacht in the world with particle filters on the main engine exhausts. She has a combined diesel mechanic and diesel electric propulsion system with exhaust gas particle filters for all the generating sets and for the main engine exhaust at lower power. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125590/image/large-b24b2d66a70d4cf9d4be5c3942df4352.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125590">This basic idea of the Lürssen green engine concept is to avoid a significant amount of emission for both generating set and main engine exhaust gases in combination with a propulsion system of high efficiency. One aim is to avoid as much exhaust gas particles as possible at anchor and while manoeuvring in harbours, anchorages, bays or at slow speed operation near the shore line. This target is akin to the efforts to reduce diesel exhaust gas particles in cities and populated areas. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125591/image/large-f136acf04d9cc48bc78526dacc8e9a3b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125591">All four generating sets are equipped with diesel exhaust particle filters, which take out more than 95 % in weight of the soot particles. These generating sets supply the power for the hotel load and for four azimuthing thrusters. With only the thrusters, the yacht is able to run at a comfortable speed and make the most of its quietness and its capability for dynamic positioning. In addition to the cleaning of the exhaust gases of the generating sets the exhaust gases of the main engines can be treated up to a load of 1000 kW for each engine. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/125592/image/large-949cec68f5f04c6924a1d8ff4f0cce36.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/125592">The combination of diesel electric propulsion (by the gensets and the thrusters) and conventional propulsion with CPP (Controllable Pitch Propellers) has the benefit of having the high efficiency of a diesel mechanic propulsion system for long distance trips. Built to the rules of Germanischer Lloyd, Dilbar reaches a top speed of 21 knots.

Mid-June saw the launch of a new 110m Lürssen yacht until now known as Project Opal (hull number 13648). Since her launch we have been sourcing information on this giant new superyacht and we can now report that she will be named Dilbar. Lürssen’s new 110m superyacht Opal becomes Dilbar

Yesterday our German photographer Thomas Rutka took some very interesting photos of a new superyacht at the Lürssen facility in Vegesack. We don’t have any details of the yacht yet, but we assume it’s the 110m project Opal which is due for delivery later this summer. Update: As expected the 110 meter yacht is indeed project <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1850">Opal</a> (hull number 13648).
