How common is it to meet a namesake? There are no statistics as such, but I like to think that everyone reacts similarly when they come across someone with the same name. It’s an amusing discovery which immediately makes you feel that what you have in common won’t end there. I can take inspiration from everything… from a visit to a museum to reading a magazine. Or just day-to-day things like shopping or watching a movie. There are no limitations to the imagination and its fantasies.”Something 'us Lauras' agree on is that being a creative is often a self-driven process. However, Sessa’s work (as is the case with many superyacht designers) is very reflective of the client themselves, their demands and their vision. “I don’t follow fashion trends except if it’s a request. The evolution of creative design depends on many fields in the industry to which it belongs. It also depends on the owner’s dedication and brief which can open up the possibility for new research to happen.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/104119/image/large-62b36b3f44a64ba95f5b13a1c6fc10be.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/104119">This part of the process doesn’t hold Sessa back: if anything, it propels her forward to gain more insight into her clients, who soon appear to become her friends. “I always look forward to a good relationship. For me, working is a pleasure – even when I have strange requests – I cannot live without my work! I try to make my clients happy and fulfil their design desires. Insight: A conversation with yacht interior designer Laura Sessa

SYT editor Laura Nicholls sits down with designer Laura Sessa to discuss what it takes to develop a world class yacht interior.

After meeting Eric Lepeingle, it is easy to see why he has established a successful career. In our relationships with clients and within the industry, we are being pushed to develop more in certain areas of the world, so it is the time to do it. Especially as clients and their expectations are evolving. As everyone knows, the way of buying has changed and the new yacht owner’s generation is driving new ways of thinking and enjoying products and so the actual onboard experience is what, I think, should also drive our way of thinking alongside our capacity to continuously think to improve what we need to do tomorrow. In five years time, these boats aren’t going to be the same. Another fond memory is a long time ago, I delivered a boat to a client in Porto Cervo and as we were entering into the harbour, he was there on the dock with his family, waiting for his new vessel. When he and his family entered the port, the smiles on their faces made me understand that our job in this industry is to bring happiness to people. With three continents completed already, the spring months of 2020 will belong to discovering Central America, Ecuador and Costa Rica, all before cruising north of America to Alaska. A four-metre pool with counter-current jets for swimming is surrounding by loungers and sun pads for an unbeatable day of relaxing in the sun. Also, their culture is almost mythical and together with the wonderful cruising, it is an all-round unforgettable experience. The north-west coast of Thailand and the Surin and Similan Island groups are also stunning and should be on everyone's bucket list. Do you see that the market is stable or growing?From our perspective, the market is undoubtedly growing: the vessels are getting bigger and bigger, and the data solely showing vessels under construction prove this fact. 2018 was an important year for our industry and a step into its next decade: the demand is growing, as is the size of the yachts to be delivered from 2019 and beyond. Exploration is a theme that always comes in every superyacht discussion at any industry event but it’s the truth: through our charter activities, we have noticed this change in mentality and we must recognize that crew is delighted to train harder and to explore new territories. To our point of view, and according to our recent sales track record, the price isn’t the main aspect to consider in a yacht sale: efficient management and crystal-clear processes are the keys to getting the maximum income on your listing. When we supervised the construction and delivery of the Fast Support Vessel <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4532" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="6711 Geo67.15m (220'4&quot;)Damen2014">6711</a> in 2014, we felt that the interest for wild destinations was increasing but the last years have confirmed this trend.
